Wilson loops with neural networks

Wilson loops are essential objects in QCD and have been pivotal in scale setting and demonstrating confinement. Various generalizations are crucial for computations needed in effective field theories. In lattice gauge theory, Wilson loop calculations face challenges, including excited-state contamination at short times and the signal-to-noise ratio issue at longer times. To address these problems, we develop a new method by using neural networks to parametrize interpolators for the static quark-antiquark pair. We construct gauge-equivariant layers for the network and train it to find the ground state of the system. The trained network itself is then treated as our new observable for the inference. Our results demonstrate a significant improvement in the signal compared to traditional Wilson loops, performing as well as Coulomb-gauge Wilson-line correlators while maintaining gauge invariance. Additionally, we present an example where the optimized ground state is used to measure the static force directly, as well as another example combining this method with the multilevel algorithm. Finally, we extend the formalism to find excited-state interpolators for static quark-antiquark systems. To our knowledge, this work is the first study of neural networks with a physically motivated loss function for Wilson loops.

Wilson loops in 5d long quiver gauge theories

Quiver gauge theories with a large number of nodes host a wealth of Wilson loop operators. Expectation values are obtained, using supersymmetric localization, for Wilson loops in the antisymmetric representations associated with each individual gauge node, for a sample of 5d long quiver gauge theories whose UV fixed points have holographic duals in Type IIB. The sample includes the $T_N$ theories and the results are uniformly given in terms of Bloch-Wigner functions. The holographic representation of the Wilson loops is identified. It comprises, for each supergravity solution, a two-parameter family of D3-branes which exactly reproduce the field theory results and identify points in the internal space with the faces of the associated 5-brane web. The expectation values of (anti)fundamental Wilson loops exhibit an enhanced scaling for many operators, which matches between field theory and supergravity.

Measurement of Convective Heat Transfer Coefficients With Supercritical CO 2 Using the Wilson-Plot Technique

This paper describes the measurement of convective heat transfer coefficients and friction factors for sCO 2 flowing in a smooth tube and compares the results with published correlations for validation. The paper also describes the Heat Exchange and Experimental Testing (HEET) rig recently designed and built at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, WV. Here, the Wilson-plot technique used for measuring the heat transfer coefficients is described along with the data reduction process. The Wilson-plot technique was chosen as the basis for the design of NETL’s HEET rig. Advantages of the Wilson-plot technique include the (1) ability to measure high convective heat transfer coefficients accurately, (2) ability to measure average heat transfer coefficient for complicated heat exchange geometries like those produced using additive manufacturing, (3) ability to measure heat transfer coefficients on both sides of a heat exchanger independently, and (4) simplicity of experimental setup. Capabilities of the HEET rig include pressure to 24 MPa (3500 psig), temperature to 538 °C (1000 °F), mass flow rate to 1.5 kg/s (3 lb/s), and Re to 500,000. The rig is designed to operate with pure CO 2 or a mixture of CO 2 and up to 10% N2 by volume to study the impact of gas mixtures typical of direct-fired sCO 2 power cycles on the convective heat transfer and pressure drop. Preliminary tests in the HEET rig were performed with smooth stainless-steel tube and pure CO 2 , and the results were compared with published correlations for Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor. Over a Reynolds number (Re) range from 58,000 to 228,000, measured Nu was compared to predictions using the Dittus and Boelter equation (Kreith and Bohn, 1993, “Principles of Heat Transfer, West Publishing Company”) within 5% and measured friction factors were compared to predictions using the McAdams correlation (“McAdams, 1954, “Heat Transmission,” 3rd ed., McGraw Hill, New York)” for smooth tube to be within 5%.

Conformal BK equation at QCD Wilson-Fisher point

High-energy scattering in pQCD in the Regge limit is described by the evolution of Wilson lines governed by the BK equation. In the leading order, the BK equation is conformally invariant and the eigenfunctions of the linearized BFKL equation are powers. It is a common belief that at d ≠ 4 the BFKL equation is useless since unlike d = 4 case it cannot be solved by usual methods. However, we demonstrate that at critical Wilson-Fisher point of QCD the relevant part of NLO BK restores the conformal invariance so the solutions are again powers. As a check of our approach to high-energy amplitudes at the Wilson-Fisher point, we calculate the anomalous dimensions of twist-2 light-ray operators in the Regge limit j → 1.

Giant Wilson loops and AdS 2 /dCFT 1

The 1/2-BPS Wilson loop in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is an important and well-studied example of conformal defect. In particular, much work has been done for the correlation functions of operator insertions on the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation. In this paper, we extend such analyses to Wilson loops in the large-rank symmetric and antisymmetric representations, which correspond to probe D3 and D5 branes with AdS 2 × S 2 and AdS 2 × S 4 worldvolume geometries, ending at the AdS 5 boundary along a one-dimensional contour. We first compute the correlation functions of protected scalar insertions from supersymmetric localization, and obtain a representation in terms of multiple integrals that are similar to the eigenvalue integrals of the random matrix, but with important differences. Using ideas from the Fermi Gas formalism and the Clustering method, we evaluate their large N limit exactly as a function of the ’t Hooft coupling. The results are given by simple integrals of polynomials that resemble the Q-functions of the Quantum Spectral Curve, with integration measures depending on the number of insertions. Next, we study the correlation functions of fluctuations on the probe D3 and D5 branes in AdS. We compute a selection of three- and four-point functions from perturbation theory on the D-branes, and show that they agree with the results of localization when restricted to supersymmetric kinematics. We also explain how the difference of the internal geometries of the D3 and D5 branes manifests itself in the localization computation.

Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with Improved Chiral Symmetry

We construct a family of Ginsparg-Wilson Hamiltonians with improved chiral properties, starting from a construction of Creutz-Horvath-Neuberger that provides a doubler-free Hamiltonian lattice regularization for Dirac fermions in even spacetime dimensions. We use a higher-order generalization of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation due to Fujikawa, which yields an order-$k$ Hamiltonian overlap operator for each integer $k \geq 0$, with an exactly conserved but nonquantized chiral charge that becomes quantized as $k \to \infty$. Our construction provides physical insight into how Fujikawa's higher-order Ginsparg-Wilson relation improves chiral symmetry while reproducing the anomaly, highlighting the trade-offs inherent in any Hamiltonian lattice realization of an anomalous chiral symmetry. This class of Hamiltonian lattice regularizations, with their tunable chiral symmetry properties, offers potential advantages for quantum and tensor-network simulations.

Mapping out the internal space in AdS/BCFT with Wilson loops

We study Wilson loops in string theory realizations of AdS/BCFT and wedge holography. The field theories are based on 3d N = 4 long quiver gauge theories engineered by D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and on BCFTs involving 4d N = 4 SYM coupled to such 3d theories. The holographic duals have geometry AdS 4 × S 2 × S 2 warped over a strip. We identify the holographic representation of antisymmetric Wilson loops associated with individual 3d gauge nodes in terms of probe D5-branes. The expectation values obtained holographically are matched to supersymmetric localization computations. Our results yield an identification of regions in the internal space with individual 3d gauge nodes. Connecting to bottom-up braneworld models, this gives a concrete notion of which parts of the 10d solutions correspond to the end-of-the-world brane and which to the remaining bulk. We also construct supersymmetric Janus on the brane embeddings in AdS 5 ×S 5 , which describe surface defects with boundaries and interfaces in N = 4 SYM.

Beyond AdS 2 /dCFT 1 : insertions in two Wilson loops

We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS 2 regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS 2 caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

Renormalization of asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson-line operators in lattice and continuum perturbation theory

In this work, we study the renormalization of nonlocal quark bilinear operators containing an asymmetric staple-shaped Wilson line at the one-loop level in both lattice and continuum perturbation theory. These operators enter the first-principle calculation of transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in lattice QCD using the formulation of large momentum effective theory. We provide appropriate RI ′ -type conditions that address the power and logarithmic divergences, as well as the mixing among staple operators of different Dirac structures, using a number of different possible projectors. A variant of RI ′ , including calculations of rectangular Wilson loops, which cancel the pinch-pole singularities of the staple operators at infinite length and reduce residual power divergences, is also employed. We calculate at one-loop order the conversion matrix, which relates the quasi-TMDPDFs in the RI ′ -type schemes to the reference scheme MS ¯ for arbitrary values of the renormalization momentum scale and of the dimensions of the staple. Supersymmetric Wilson loops on the lattice in the large N limit

We propose additional tests of holography by studying supersymmetric Wilson loops in p+1-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang?Mills (SYM) theories on the lattice in the large N limit. In the dual gravity description, this computation involves calculating the area of a fundamental string worldsheet in certain Type II supergravity backgrounds. Though thermodynamic observables have been computed on the lattice using Monte Carlo methods and agree with the supergravity results in various dimensions, not much has been done for the gauge-invariant operators such as the Wilson loop. We provide analytical predictions for these loops for various non-conformal Dp-brane background cases with ? ? 2 p?2 in the large N limit and comment on how these can be computed on non-orthogonal lattices in various models.

$\mathrm{O}(a)$ improvement of the flavour singlet scalar density in a setup with Wilson fermions

We report on our Ward identity determination of the O(a) improvement coefficient for the flavour singlet scalar density, namely gS , from three-flavour lattice QCD with Wilson-clover fermions and the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. We employ five couplings, g20∈[1.5,1.77] , that cover the range used in large-volume CLS simulations. While gS itself is for instance relevant for the O(a) improvement of meson and baryon sigma terms, a relation to bg , the O(a) improvement parameter of the gauge coupling, can also be established, allowing for its non-perturbative extraction as well. With Wilson fermions, bg is in principle required for full O(a) improvement at non-vanishing sea quark masses. We outline our procedure for extracting bg

The lattice extraction of the TMD soft function using the auxiliary field representation of the Wilson line

The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) soft function can be obtained by formulating the Wilson line in terms of auxiliary 1-dimensional fermion fields on the lattice. In this formulation, the directional vector of the auxiliary field in Euclidean space has the form ˜ 𝑛 = ¹𝑖𝑛0– ®0?– 𝑛3º, where the time component is purely imaginary. The components of these complex directional vectors in the Euclidean space can be mapped directly to the rapidities of the Minkowski space soft function. We present the results of the one-loop calculation of the Euclidean space analog to the soft function using these complex directional vectors. As a result, we show that the calculation is valid only when the directional vectors obey the relation: j𝑟 j = j𝑛3𝑛0j ¡ 1, and that this result corresponds to a computation in Minkowski space with space-like directed Wilson lines. Finally, we show that a lattice calculable object can be constructed that has the desired properties of the soft function.

Two-loop MHV form factors from the periodic Wilson loop

We discuss how to compute maximal-helicity-violating (MHV) form factors for the chiral part of the stress-tensor supermultiplet from periodic light-like polygon Wilson loops in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory beyond the one-loop level. We show that the periodicity imposes path ordering on points on different edges, which explains the appearance of square roots coming from non-planar Feynman diagrams. Taking such diagrams into account, we provide the integrand of the two-loop n-particle MHV form factor, compute all diagrams, prove the cancellation of divergences and finally compute the two-loop 5-particle and 6-particle form factors as examples.

T -matrix analysis of static Wilson line correlators from lattice QCD at finite temperature

Here, we utilize a previously constructed thermodynamic T -matrix approach to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to derive constaints on its input by using results on Wilson line correlators (WLCs) of a static quark-antiquark pair from 2 + 1-flavor lattice-QCD (lQCD) computations with realistic pion mass. The self-consistent T -matrix results, which include previous constraints from the lQCD equation of state in the light-parton sector, can describe the lQCD data for WLCs fairly well once refinements of its driving kernel are applied. In particular, the input potential requires less screening than what has been inferred from previous T-matrix analyses. Pertinent predictions for the spectral and transport properties of the QGP are discussed, including the spatial diffusion coefficient for heavy quarks; the latter turns out to have a rather weak temperature dependence, in approximate agreement with recent unquenched lQCD results.

Data for Wilson and Megonigal (2025), "Nitrate reduction across soils transitioning from coastal forest to wetland are hotspots for denitrification"

Sea level rise drives spatial migration of coastal ecosystems and can lead to the accelerated replacement of coastal forests with tidal wetlands. Soil biogeochemical cycles in steady-state upland and wetland ecosystems are well studied, but pathways and rates in rapidly changing ecosystems are largely unconstrained. Wilson and Megonigal (2025) performed a one-time sampling and a subsequent incubation experiment, and characterized the reduction of reactive nitrogen (N) via denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia. Sampling was done at four sites where coastal deciduous forest is undergoing ecosystem state change and becoming wetland throughout the Chesapeake Bay, USA. The COMPASS-FME project (http://compass.pnnl.gov) established the sites sampled in this study in 2022–2023.This dataset consists of:* Isotope-labeled incubation results comparing nitrate reduction rates across transects spanning upland, transition, and wetland; and* Ancillary porewater chemistry data. All files in this dataset are plain text, comma-separated value (CSV), and no special software is required to read them.

BPS Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 superconformal SU(N) “orientifold” gauge theory and weak-strong coupling interpolation

We consider the expectation value \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) of the circular BPS Wilson loop in \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 superconformal SU( N ) gauge theory containing a vector multiplet coupled to two hypermultiplets in rank-2 symmetric and antisymmetric representations. This theory admits a regular large N expansion, is planar-equivalent to \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM theory and is expected to be dual to a certain orbifold/orientifold projection of AdS 5 × S 5 superstring theory. On the string theory side \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) is represented by the path integral expanded near the same AdS 2 minimal surface as in the maximally supersymmetric case. Following the string theory argument in [5], we suggest that as in the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM case and in the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 SU( N ) × SU( N ) superconformal quiver theory discussed in [19], the coefficient of the leading non-planar 1/ N 2 correction in \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) should have the universal λ 3/2 scaling at large ’t Hooft coupling. We confirm this prediction by starting with the localization matrix model representation for \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) . We complement the analytic derivation of the λ 3/2 scaling by a numerical high-precision resummation and extrapolation of the weak-coupling expansion using conformal mapping improved Padé analysis.

Strong coupling expansion of free energy and BPS Wilson loop in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 superconformal models with fundamental hypermultiplets

As a continuation of the study (in arXiv:2102.07696 and arXiv:2104.12625 ) of strong-coupling expansion of non-planar corrections in \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 4d superconformal models we consider two special theories with gauge groups SU( N ) and Sp(2 N ). They contain N -independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM theories. These \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 theories can be realised on a system of N D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of AdS 5 × S 5 superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 partition function on S 4 we find exact differential relations between the 1 /N terms in the corresponding free energy F and the \( \frac{1}{2} \) -BPS Wilson loop expectation value \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) and also compute their large ’t Hooft coupling ( λ » 1) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable Sp(2 N ) case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the 1 /N expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large λ contributions to the non-planar corrections to F and \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) and comment on their resurgence properties. We discuss dual string theory interpretation of these strong coupling expansions.
