Process-Information Display Panel For Welder's Visor

Head-up display (HUD) unit mounted in welder's visor or helmet provides process information in real time. Display enables welder to gain greater awareness of effects of welding while controlling welding process in usual way(s) by use of foot pedal, voice command, and/or manipulation of welding torch. Possible to avoid need for every new welder on job to solve same problems solved by other welders. Graphical display presented to welder, adjacent to normal field of view through visor. Beneficial in supporting and enhancing continued practice of manual arc welding. Valuable in industries that invest millions of technician-hours each year in manual arc welding for variety of products.

Plastic welder

Low-cost, self-contained, portable welder joins plastic parts by induction heating. Welder is useable in any atmosphere or in vacuum and with most types of thermoplastic; plastic components can be joined in situ. Device is applicable to aerospace industry and in automobile, furniture, and construction industries. Power requirements are easily met by battery or solar energy. In welder, toroidal inductor transfers magnetic flux through thermoplastic to screen. Heated screen causes plastic surface on either side to melt and flow into it to form joint.

Checking Automated-Welder Programs By Computer

Computer system detects and displays actual and potential errors in programs for computer-controlled electron-beam welder. Uses personal computer, separate from welding computer. Programmed specifically to highlight errors in welding program. Eliminates need for preweld full-power test run reducing checkout time to about half hour. Assures much higher quality, damage-free welding. Used to create and edit new programs for welder. Control computer thereby free for production. Useful for checking programs for such other computer-controlled equipment as inertia welders, robots, machine tools, and heat treaters.

Limiting current in electron-beam welders

Damage to workpiece by excessive current in electron-beam welder is prevented by mechanism that accurately adjusts anode-to-cathode spacing. Mechanism is installed on standard Sciaky (or equivalent) electron-beam gun with only minimal modification. By turning knurled knob and observing digital readout of anode/cathode separation, machine operator adjusts welder for safe maximum current before welding begins.

Compact Pinch Welder

Spot welder designed for bonding insulated metal strips together. Compact, measuring only about 33.5 cm in its largest linear dimension. Pinch welder clamps electrodes on weldments with strong, repeatable force. Compressed air supplied through fitting on one handle. Small switch on same handle starts welding process when operator presses it with trigger. Provides higher, more repeatable clamping force than manually driven gun and thus produces weld joints of higher quality. Light in weight and therefore positioned precisely by operator.

Development and Implementation of a Load-Controlled Friction Stir Welder

Lockheed Martin Michoud Space Systems, under contract to NASA/MSFC, has developed and implemented a friction stir weld tool that uses the magnitude of the spindle axial load to control the weld process. This tool was used during the process development phase and the assembly of a full-scale External Tank barrel section. Both position and load transducers are incorporated into the welder. The control algorithm allows either the position or load transducer to provide the command variable in a closed loop system. Initially, the position transducer was used to actively control the weld process and the axial load on the spindle was monitored and collected via data acquisition hardware. As part of the process development, the axial load was implemented as the command variable in the closed loop. The spindle position is monitored and used to set limits on spindle travel. A zero set point algorithm has also been developed for establishing the spindle position at the start of the weld process. In its current state, the welder operates in a dual mode in which the position control is used to plunge the pin tool to a specified depth at the initiation of the weld. The load control is then used to control the weld process. This control algorithm has been used to assemble a 27.5-ft diameter, 2195-T8 barrel using hardware designed for NASA's Space Transportation System External Tank.

Portable Welder

A low cost, low power, self-contained portable welding gun designed for joining thermoplastics which become soft when heated and harden when cooled was developed originally by NASA's Langley Research Center for repairing helicopter windshields. Welder has a broad range of applications for joining both thermoplastic materials in the aerospace, automotive, appliance, and construction industries. Welders portability and low power requirement allow its use on-site in any type of climate, with power supplied by a variety of portable sources.

Comprehensive Automated Welder System

The Comprehensive Automated Welder System - PDRD SR-17-007 project was initiated to develop hardware and software to eliminate possible error pre-cursor functions of the pinch welding process that require manual manipulation and data entry as well as leveraging 21st century technology advances by replacing obsolete hardware with state of the art maintainable equipment. The project plan targeted three primary areas for improvement: 1. Replacing the existing welding power supply system with a solid-state power supply, 2. Improving the data acquisition system, sensors and controls, and 3. Updating the software to a FPGA “real-time” program with automated steps. SRNL purchased, designed and installed in 723-A, a system to meet the requirements for these areas. While improvements in hardware controls and sensor selection were achieved and a successful software automation routine was demonstrated, the performance goals were not met with the custom solid-state power transformer.

Laser Welder Startup Capacitor Failure Analysis & Suggested Potential Mitigation Factors [Slides]

On the morning of the failure (Mon 2/23/2023 5 AM), an unclassified Yttrium Aluminum Garnet Laser Welder system was working within operational parameters. However, when another part was positioned for drilling and it was activated, the coolant compressor was heard shutting off by everyone working on the laser. The coolant pump reportedly failed due to blown 5-amp fuses. Since the coolant pump was offline, the laser was automatically placed into an inoperable state. Failure of the coolant pump was due to a failed capacitor in the startup circuit for the pump.

Power arc welder touch-started with consumable electrode

Power arc welder formed as a hand-held welding gun touch-starts, retracts a consumable electrode to create the desired arc, and then commences feeding of the consumable electrode at the rate required to form the intended bead or spot. This device achieves uniform spot welds repeatedly.

Electron beam welder X-rays its own welds

Beam of an electron beam welder X rays its own welds, enabling rapid weld quality checks to be made without removing the work from the vacuum chamber. A tungsten target produces X rays when hit by the beam. They are directed at the weld specimen and recorded on polaroid film.

Automatic contour welder incorporates speed control system

Speed control system maintains the welding torch of an automatic welder at a substantially constant speed. The system is particularly useful when welding contoured or unusually shaped surfaces, which cause the distance from the work surface to the weld carriage to vary in a random manner.

Welder analyzer

Welder analyzer circuit evaluates and certifies resistance welding machines. The analyzer measures peak current, peak voltage, peak power, total energy, and first-pulse energy. It is used as an energy monitor while welding is being performed, or a precision shunt load for a pure electrical evaluation of the weld machine.
