High-density integrated delay line using extreme skin-depth subwavelength grating waveguides

Optical delay lines control the flow of light in time, introducing phase and group delays for engineering interferences and ultrashort pulses. Photonic integration of such optical delay lines is essential for chip-scale lightwave signal processing and pulse control. However, typical photonic delay lines based on long spiral waveguides require extensively large chip footprints, ranging from mm 2 to cm 2 scales. Here we present a scalable, high-density integrated delay line using a skin-depth engineered subwavelength grating waveguide, i.e., an extreme skin-depth (eskid) waveguide. The eskid waveguide suppresses the crosstalk between closely spaced waveguides, significantly saving the chip footprint area. Our eskid-based photonic delay line is easily scalable by increasing the number of turns and should improve the photonic chip integration density.

Excitation of a Parallel Plate Waveguide by an Array of Rectangular Waveguides

This work addresses the problem of excitation of a parallel plate waveguide by an array of rectangular waveguides that arises in applications such as the continuous transverse stub (CTS) antenna and dual-polarized parabolic cylindrical reflector antennas excited by a scanning line source. In order to design the junction region between the parallel plate waveguide and the linear array of rectangular waveguides, waveguide sizes have to be chosen so that the input match is adequate for the range of scan angles for both polarizations. Electromagnetic wave scattered by the junction of a parallel plate waveguide by an array of rectangular waveguides is analyzed by formulating coupled integral equations for the aperture electric field at the junction. The integral equations are solved by the method of moments. In order to make the computational process efficient and accurate, the method of weighted averaging was used to evaluate rapidly oscillating integrals encountered in the moment matrix. In addition, the real axis spectral integral is evaluated in a deformed contour for speed and accuracy. The MoM results for a large finite array have been validated by comparing its reflection coefficients with corresponding results for an infinite array generated by the commercial finite element code, HFSS. Once the aperture electric field is determined by MoM, the input reflection coefficients at each waveguide port, and coupling for each polarization over the range of useful scan angles, are easily obtained. Results for the input impedance and coupling characteristics for both the vertical and horizontal polarizations are presented over a range of scan angles. It is shown that the scan range is limited to about 35 for both polarizations and therefore the optimum waveguide is a square of size equal to about 0.62 free space wavelength.

Dielectric-loaded waveguide circulator for cryogenically cooled and cascaded maser waveguide structures

A dielectrically loaded four port waveguide circulator is used with a reflected wave maser connected to a second port between first and third ports to form one of a plurality of cascaded maser waveguide structures. The fourth port is connected to a waveguide loaded with microwave energy absorbing material. The third (output signal) port of one maser waveguide structure is connected by a waveguide loaded with dielectric material to the first (input) port of an adjacent maser waveguide structure, and the second port is connected to a reflected wave maser by a matching transformer which passes the signal to be amplified into and out of the reflected wavemaser and blocks pumping energy in the reflected wave maser from entering the circulator. A number of cascaded maser waveguide structures are thus housed in a relatively small volume of conductive material placed within a cryogenically cooled magnet assembly.

A 3D-Printed Millimeter-Wave Inline Waveguide-to-Coplanar-Waveguide Transition to Enable Dense Spectrometer Arrays for Intensity Mapping Surveys

We present a 3D-printed millimeter-wave, octave-bandwidth, in-line waveguide-to-coplanar-waveguide transition designed to enable focal planes with dense arrays of on-chip spectrometers. These arrays will enable compelling surveys of the large-scale structure of the universe through millimeter-wave intensity mapping. The transition consists of a four-step ridge-waveguide transformer that couples light from a rectangular waveguide onto a coplanar waveguide via an electrical connection made with indium bump bonds. We develop a tolerance-aware optimization approach to identify high-performance transition geometries that are robust to manufacturing variations; the same formulation can be applied to other tolerance-sensitive design problems. We also describe the implementation of a custom apparatus and procedure for bump-bonding a silicon chip to a metallized 3D-printed component. We detail the fabrication of the coplanar waveguide chip and three-dimensional waveguide structure, simulations and metrology of a test device, and room temperature reflectance measurements of this device. The room temperature metrology and reflection measurements are consistent with a model that predicts a coupling efficiency of $\mathord{\sim} 95\%$ at cryogenic temperatures in the 85-170 GHz frequency range.

Power Loss For Multimode Waveguides and its Application to Beam-Waveguide Systems

The conventional way of expressing poer loss in dB/meter for a multimode waveguiding system with finite wall condcutivity (such as a beam-waveguide system with protective shroud) can be incorrect and misleading. The power loss (indB) for a multimode waveguiding system is, in general, not linearly proportional to the length of the waveguide.

A new rectangular waveguide to coplanar waveguide transition

A new rectangular waveguide to coplanar waveguide (CPW) transition is described. The transition uses a ridge in one of the broad walls of the waveguide and a nonradiating slot in the opposite wall to split and rotate the electromagnetic fields of the rectangular waveguide TE10 mode into the CPW fields.

A Novel Transition Between Rectangular Waveguide and Layered Ridge Dielectric Waveguide

A novel transition between rectangular waveguide and layered ridge dielectric waveguide (LRDW) is reported. The transition is also suitable for use with image guide, insulated image guide, dielectric ridge waveguide and other open dielectric waveguides. Both experimental and theoretical data are presented which compare the new transition to three transitions reported in the literature.

Heat-induced drift reduction of time of flight in fused quartz acoustic waveguides via annealing process

High temperature structural acoustic sensors play an important role in many applications. Fused quartz waveguide is a popular choice due to its resistance to harsh environments and its convenience of modification. However, time of flight between pulse and echo, which is widely used in these sensors, tends to encounter drifts in fast temperature changing process even after temperature returns to initial value. In this article, different annealing process are performed for a special modified fused quartz waveguide with a sensor node. Annealing treatment is found able to reduce the drift when the waveguide undergoes a sudden temperature spike to 1000 °C at 500 kHz operating acoustic frequency, and the best annealing condition could make the drift one magnitude smaller. A following temperature test up to 1000 °C shows consistent measurement readings.

Enhancement of harmonic generation by an intense driving laser with high-order waveguide modes in a high-pressure gas-filled hollow waveguide

High-order harmonics have been widely used as reliable tabletop coherent radiation sources recently, but their applications have often been limited by the available pulse energy. Here, we report that by using an overdriven intense laser in a long waveguide with high-pressure gas, phase matching can be achieved in three distinct “regimes”. In the third regime, favorable phase matching is achieved at near-axis positions to enhance harmonic yields. Our results are supported by a full theoretical analysis, and we demonstrate that coupling of the driving laser with the high-order waveguide modes (instead of the fundamental mode used in most prior experiments) is responsible for achieving phase matching. Furthermore, we establish that this phase matching (and harmonic enhancement) is robust, and a scaling relation is derived for the necessary waveguide and gas parameters, allowing our predictions to be tested immediately in any laboratory today.
