Viskores: Integrating Parallel Scientific Visualization Research into Applications

Viskores is a scientific visualization library that is the primary deployment of such algorithms to the parallel accelerated processors of modern DOE supercomputers. In this paper, we review the capabilities provided by Viskores and how these capabilities are leveraged by other software in the high-performance computing ecosystem. We discuss the Viskores data representation and pay particular attention to array management. Through this array management we describe how data is adapted between Viskores and other software along with strategies for converting dynamic, polymorphic objects to static representations better suited to GPU processing. We conclude with several examples of Viskores integrating with high-performance software that is used in production today.

State of the Art of Molecular Visualization in Immersive Virtual Environments

Abstract Visualization plays a crucial role in molecular and structural biology. It has been successfully applied to a variety of tasks, including structural analysis and interactive drug design. While some of the challenges in this area can be overcome with more advanced visualization and interaction techniques, others are challenging primarily due to the limitations of the hardware devices used to interact with the visualized content. Consequently, visualization researchers are increasingly trying to take advantage of new technologies to facilitate the work of domain scientists. Some typical problems associated with classic 2D interfaces, such as regular desktop computers, are a lack of natural spatial understanding and interaction, and a limited field of view. These problems could be solved by immersive virtual environments and corresponding hardware, such as virtual reality head‐mounted displays. Thus, researchers are investigating the potential of immersive virtual environments in the field of molecular visualization. There is already a body of work ranging from educational approaches to protein visualization to applications for collaborative drug design. This review focuses on molecular visualization in immersive virtual environments as a whole, aiming to cover this area comprehensively. We divide the existing papers into different groups based on their application areas, and types of tasks performed. Furthermore, we also include a list of available software tools. We conclude the report with a discussion of potential future research on molecular visualization in immersive environments.

Digital Twin: Visualizing the Future of the Power Grid [Slides]

The energy systems are generating data at a scale and complexity that increasingly outpaces our ability to analyze it. This talk argues that rigorous, large-scale visualization is a critical tool for meeting that challenge. Drawing on recent work in the Computational Science Center at the National Laboratory of the Rockies, we trace a progression of visualization research culminating in an immersive digital twin of a real campus power grid. Along the way, we examine why visualization matters at all, where widely-used techniques quietly fail, and what becomes analytically possible when you match the display environment to the scale of the problem.

ExaWind at NREL: Upping the Ante

The objective of the ExaWind component of the Exascale Computing Project is to deliver many-turbine blade-resolved simulations in complex terrain. These simulations bring new challenges to both compute and analysis of the resulting data. In this paper/video, we visually explore the impact of ExaWind on wind simulations through two studies of a small wind farm under two atmospheric conditions. We then turn to analysis and review tools that visualization researchers at NREL use to answer the challenges that ExaWind brings.

Distributed Resources for the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) Advanced Management (DREAM). Final Report

Distributed Resources for the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) Advanced Management (DREAM) is a proposed system that will enable data from an infinite number of diverse sources to be organized and accessed from anywhere using any handheld or other computer device. The approach offers a powerful roadmap for the creation and integration of a unified knowledge base of an entire ecosystem, including its many geophysical, geographical, social, political, agricultural, energy, transportation, and cyber aspects. The resulting aggregation of data has the potential to generate an informational universe of unprecedented size that has never before been possible due to the prohibitive costs, managerial complexity, and technical barriers associated with ever-changing exponential-growth data flows. We envision that DREAM will accelerate discovery by enabling climate researchers, among other types of researchers, to manage, analyze, and visualize data from earth-scale measurements and simulations. DREAM’s success will be built on proven components that leverage existing services and resources. A key building block for DREAM will be the ESGF, chaired by Dean N. Williams. Expanding on the existing ESGF, the project will ensure that the access, storage, movement, and analysis of the large quantities of data that are processed and produced by diverse science projects can be dynamically distributed with proper resource management. Much of the Office of Science data is currently generated by multiple stand-alone facilities. DREAM can collect data accumulated from these facilities and incorporate it into a fully integrated network accessible from anywhere in the world. The result is a completely new paradigm shift for data management, analysis, and visualization enabling researchers to: Manage their calculations, data, tools, and research results; Ensure that all data are sharable, reproducible and (re)usable—accompanied by appropriate metadata describing its provenance, syntax, and semantics at creation; Advance application performance by selectively adapting APIs and services in response to scientific requirements and architectural complexities; and Provide scalable interactive resource management—navigate data and metadata at multiple levels, provide architecture-aware data integration, analysis and visualization tools. We will engage closely with DOE, NASA, and NOAA science groups working at the leading edge of computing. These engagements—in domains such as biology, climate, and hydrology—will allow us to advance disciplinary science goals and inform our development of technologies that can accelerate discovery across DOE more broadly. We will advertise and promote our technologies via dedicated workshops, tutorials, and sessions at conferences, stand-alone events with broad inter-disciplinary invitation, and engagements with leadership facilities.

Visualization for Insight and Data Analysis in Energy Research

This talk explores how advanced visualization technologies are transforming analytical reasoning and knowledge discovery in energy research, drawing on recent work at the National Laboratory of the Rockies' Computational Science Center. Through a series of scientific case studies, we demonstrate how immersive and high-resolution visualization environments enable scientists and engineers to identify previously unseen patterns and features - insights that often remain hidden in traditional desktop-based analysis. By embedding richer information into interactive analytics tools, these approaches support the exploration of complex, multivariate parameter spaces, where interaction itself catalyzes understanding. Beyond capability, we emphasize the critical role of visualization design grounded in perception and cognition, showing how visual encodings directly influence analytical outcomes. Spanning applications from materials science to integrated energy systems, these visualization approaches accelerate innovation and improve decision-making by enabling deeper, more reliable insight into increasingly complex energy data.

Probing charge density in materials with atomic resolution in real space

The charge distribution in materials at the nanoscale can often explain the origin of macroscopic properties such as localized conductivity or the plasmonic response and illuminate more fundamental changes in the microscopic structure such as changes in chemical bonding characteristics. Previously, direct visualization of the charge density with high spatial resolution was often a missing link in the formation of structure–property relationships, especially in heterogeneous materials systems. Furthermore, recent advancements in microscopy technology have enabled researchers to visualize the charge distribution in materials down to subatomic length scales. In this Technical Review, we discuss the developments in high-resolution real-space charge distribution imaging using diffraction techniques and electron microscopy, with a focus on the recent advancement of four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron holography, and applications to materials interfaces.

The AGN-201 Digital Twin: A test bed for remotely monitoring nuclear reactors

Research reactors have historically provided researchers and scientists with a means for testing and understanding the workings of nuclear phenomena. With the lack of new research reactors built in the past decades, it is important now more than ever to utilize and provide evidence for the usefulness of research reactors. Here, this work explores the use of the AGN-201 research reactor at Idaho State University as a test bed for developing a digital twin (named the AGN-201 DT) to realize remote monitoring for nuclear reactors. The goal of the AGN-201 DT is to monitor the AGN-201 reactor and detect when undeclared events take place to provide information for a monitoring agency. The AGN-201 DT was able to detect (without a priori knowledge) when multiple undeclared experiments were placed in the core using on-the-fly machine learning and reactor physics analysis. The AGN-201 reactor provided a test bed for developing, deploying, and testing a digital twin for monitoring nuclear reactors.

FunM2C: A Filter for Uncertainty Visualization of Multivariate Data on Multi-Core Devices

Uncertainty visualization is an emerging research topic in data visualization because neglecting uncertainty in visualization can lead to inaccurate assessments. In this paper, we study the propagation of multivariate data uncertainty in visualization. Although there have been a few advancements in probabilistic uncertainty visualization of multivariate data, three critical challenges remain to be addressed. First, the state-of-the-art probabilistic uncertainty visualization framework is limited to bivariate data (two variables). Second, existing uncertainty visualization algorithms use computationally intensive techniques and lack support for cross-platform portability. Third, as a consequence of the computational expense, integration into production visualization tools is impractical. In this work, we address all three issues and make a threefold contribution. First, we take a step to generalize the state-of-the-art probabilistic framework for bivariate data to multivariate data with an arbitrary number of variables. Second, through utilization of VTK-m’s shared-memory parallelism and cross-platform compatibility features, we demonstrate acceleration of multivariate uncertainty visualization on different many-core architectures, including OpenMP and AMD GPUs. Third, we demonstrate the integration of our algorithms with the ParaView software. We demonstrate the utility of our algorithms through experiments on multivariate simulation data with three and four variables.

TEAMER: Pitching Foil Crossflow Turbine Efficiency Data

This dataset documents the efficiency testing of a pitching foil crossflow turbine, conducted at the University of New Hampshire's (UNH) Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory tow tank facility. The tests explored various pitch phases and amplitudes, ranging from 0 to 18 degrees, across different flow speeds and turbine RPMs. Specifically, testing was performed at pitch amplitudes of 0,3,6,9,12,15 and 18 degrees. The results indicate that turbine efficiency improves with increased pitch amplitude, reaching optimal performance at 12 degrees. Modifications were made to the test frame by UNH to enhance the stiffness of the support structure. The testing specifically mapped the efficiency of a single quadrant of the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) Autonomous Turbine Generator Unit (ATGU), covering the full range of allowable pitching amplitudes and phases. The dataset provides both raw and processed data, including drag and torque measurements, and contains Python scripts used for data processing and visualization. This research was supported by funding from TEAMER RFTS 1 (Request for Technical Support).
