Spin contamination in unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations.

Several pi-electron doublets are treated by both the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method and the restricted approximation of Longuet-Higgins and Pople. For two of the molecules, which contain oxygen heteroatoms, serious spin contamination occurs in the UHF wavefunctions, and this negates the usefulness of the single annihilation procedure that is often used for spin-density calculations. The restricted approximation provides a convenient alternative, especially because configuration interaction is easily taken into account.

Ab initio projected-unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculation of some potential energy curves for carbonyl fluoride

Some potential energy curves for CF2O were calculated using projected-unrestricted Hartree-Fock (PUHF) theory. The calculations employed a contracted (4s 3p) Gaussian-type atomic orbital basis set. Bound states were found for the X-tilde 1A1 and 1,3A2 states while the 1,3B1 and 1,3B2 states were repulsive in the valence representation. The merits of the PUHF treatment for excited states are discussed. The results are discussed in terms of available experimental information and previous calculations with particular emphasis on the question of the photolysis channels open in the solar spectral region.

Structure and thermochemistry of ClO2 radicals

The structure of ClO2 has been calculated for the X 2A-double prime ground state using unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF), unrestricted second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation (UMP2), configuration interaction employing single and double excitation (CISD), and quadratic configuration interaction (QCI) ab initio molecular orbital methods. Calculations using UMP2 and CISD wave functions predict a ClO bond length of 1.728 +/- 0.01 A. The single-configuration-based QCI in the singles and doubles space with perturbation inclusion of triple substitutions, denoted QCISD(T), yield a ClO bond length of 2.205 A. The QCI results are consistent with results of Jensen (1990) who showed that the ClO bond length is 2.181 A using annihilated self-consistent methods (AUMP2). The thermochemistry of ClO2 radical has been calculated using MP2 and QCI methods employing an isodesmic scheme. Our scheme predicts the heat of formation for ClO2 at 0 K to be 24.6 +/- 2 kcal/mol.

AB Initio Study of the Structure and Spectroscopic Properties of Halogenated Thioperoxy Radicals

Thioperoxy (XSO or XOS) radicals exist in a variety of chemical environments, and they have as a consequence drawn some interest. HSO, an important species in the chemistry of the troposphere, has been examined both experimentally. The halogenated (X = F, Cl or Br) peroxy species and isovalent thioperoxy species have been studied less, but they too are potentially interesting because oxidized sulfur species and halogen sources are present in the atmosphere. Learning the fate of XSO and XOS radicals is important to understanding the atmospheric oxidation chemistry of sulfur compounds. Of these, FSO and ClSO are particularly interesting because they have been directly detected spectroscopically. Recent studies in our laboratory on the photochemistry of thionyl halides (X2SO; where X = F or Cl) have suggested new ways to generate XSO species. The laser-induced photodissociation of thionyl fluoride, F2SO, at 193 nm and thionyl chloride, ClSO, at 248 nm is characterized by a radical mechanism, X2SO -> XSO + X. The structure of FSO has been characterized experimentally by Endo et cd. employing microwave spectroscopy. Using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) self-consistent field (SCF) method, Sakai and Morokuma computed the electronic structure of the ground (sup 2)A" and the first excited (sup 2)A' states of FSO. Electron correlation was not taken into account in their study. In a laser photodissociation experiment, Huber et al. identified ClSO mass spectromctrically. ClSO has also been detected in low temperature matrices by EPR and in the gas phase by far IR laser magnetic resonance. Although the structure of FSO is known in detail, the only study, experimental or theoretical, of CISO has been an ab initio HFSCF study by Hinchliffe. Electron correlation corrections were also excluded from this study. In order to better understand the isomerization and dissociation dynamics of the radical species, we have performed ab initio correlated studies of the potential energy surfaces (PES) of ClSO and its isomer ClOS at the QCISD(T)/6-31 G* level of theory. For FSO and FOS, more extensive QCISD/6-31 1G(2df) calculations have been possible, and the results are summarized here.

Cr2 Revisited

Abstract Cr2 is studied at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory, including a perturbational estimate of the connected triples [CCSD(T)]. Both spin restricted, RCCSD(T), and spin unrestricted, UCCSD(T), approaches are used. The UCCSD(T) bond length is much longer than the experimental value, while the RCCSD(T) bond length is shorter. This difference is due to the inability of the spin restricted Hartree-Fock reference to describe the antiferromagnetic coupling at larger r values. In contrast with the results obtained using density functional theory in conjunction with older functionals, the results obtained with recently developed functionals are in agreement with the UCCSD(T) results.
