45Q Carbon Oxide Utilization LCA Training Workshop: Toolkit Overview

This training workshop was offered to inform stakeholders and LCA professionals of the tools and resources available from the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to support the development of an LCA that is compliant with the 45Q requirements. This presentation provides a descriptive overview which preceded a demonstration of the new and existing tools, available to view on the USEA website. A description and recording on USEA website here: https://usea.org/event/doenetl-45q-carbon-oxide-conversion-lca-training-workshop-hybrid.

Young Leaders Workforce Training Program Overview and Impact

To support the Government of Colombia's plans to transform its power sector, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has assembled a cross-organizational team to develop and deliver a comprehensive workforce training program for young energy sector leaders in Colombia designed to enhance the efficient integration of growing volumes of variable renewable energy (VRE) to the energy sector. The team - which includes USAID's Colombia Mission, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USAID's Scaling Up Renewable Energy (SURE) program implemented by Tetra Tech, and the U.S. Energy Association (USEA) - collaboratively developed a series of seven capacity building modules designed to ready Colombia's energy sector workforce to participate in the construction, operation, and grid integration of VRE projects, such as wind and solar. This brochure highlights the program's objectives, results, and impacts to date.

Considerations for Developing a Regulatory Roadmap for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Integration in Colombia

The USAID-NREL Partnership in Colombia, in conjunction with SURE and USEA, selected four action plan teams from the Young Professionals Leadership Program to receive tailored NREL technical assistance to support action plan implementation. The four plans selected represent various aspects associated with planning for the efficient integration of DERs, including electric mobility, residential and commercial energy applications, distributed generation modeling, and regulatory considerations. In response to national grid modernization, decentralization, digitalization, and electrification trends, CREG is looking to update Colombia's electric distribution code, with an emphasis on the integration of electric vehicles and charging stations, but also energy storage systems, non-conventional sources of renewable energy, and other distributed energy resources (DERs). CREG aims to establish the general steps that must be carried out to update the distribution code for the integration of DERs, with a view to the design and development of new markets. The objective of the TA provided to CREG was to support them in identifying and outlining the general processes and approaches to consider when updating Colombia's distribution code for the integration of electric vehicles, distributed renewable energy systems, and energy storage systems, with a view to the design and development of new markets.

Midwest Regional Carbon Conversion/Utilization Procurement Grant Workshop

https://events.usea.org/events/midwest-regional-carbon-conversionutilization-procurement-grant-workshop As the U.S. economy moves toward clean energy and a lower carbon future, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking to partner with states, communities, and industries to support the procurement and development of carbon conversion products. These efforts have been enabled by provisions included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). As part of the BIL, supporting the Administration’s goal to achieve a carbon-free power sector by 2035 and putting the United States on a path to a net-zero economy by 2050, a new initiative was established within DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management through its Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program. The new initiative will establish a demonstration grant program to issue grants to eligible entities to procure commercial and industrial products derived from the conversion of anthropogenic carbon oxides and demonstrate a significant net reduction in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to incumbent technologies, processes, and products. DOE-FECM will establish a demonstration grant program within the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program to support eligible applicants that procure those commercial and industrial products derived from anthropogenic carbon oxides. Therefore, the Carbon Conversion/Utilization Program, with the assistance of the United States Energy Association (USEA), will conduct a series of workshops (both virtual and in-person) with relevant stakeholders, e.g., product manufacturers, eligible entities, or their representative national organizations (e.g., United States Conference of Mayors, etc.) to solicit input and ideas on challenges and opportunities for a potential grant program.

Environmental Impact of Capture Technology A Review of DOE-Sponsored FEED Studies

The slides were presented at the USEA and FECM organized “Workshop on Measurement, Monitoring and Controlling Potential Environmental Impacts from the Installation of Point Source Capture”. The slides discuss insight regarding the environmental impact of capture system implementation gained from reviewing public FEED reports completed under FOA 2058. The slides were edited to add language requested by DOE and will published on the workshop website.

Providencia Island White Papers: Overview of Technical Requirements for Interconnection

This issue brief provides an overview of key technical requirements for inverter-based resources - including distributed energy resources (DERs) - to support the reliable and safe operation of the Providencia Island electrical grid, and other island or isolated area mini-grid applications. With the planned increase in inverter-based resources and the introduction of energy storage, adopting Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Std 1547-2018, including the more advanced performance capabilities for voltage and frequency ride-through, will simplify interconnection as well as help to maintain a safe, reliable grid on Providencia Island.

Providencia Island White Papers: Potential for Increasing the Physical Resilience of Distributed Energy Resources

Using technologies such as solar photovoltaics (PV) to provide power to a site during a large-scale grid outage can be an effective solution for enhancing resilience, if designed appropriately. This paper discusses storm-hardening strategies including wind-loading standards, secure racking systems, balance of electrical systems and pre-storm preparations.

Power Grid Planning with Higher Renewable Share

Power grid planning with a higher renewable share got worldwide attention since the declining cost of renewable energy technologies and greenhouse gas reduction goals continue to drive a transition to a cleaner power grid. Energy professionals from developing countries working to achieve renewable power goals want to learn about NREL's state-of-the-art research efforts in renewable power and power grid planning. Supporting these efforts, the United States Energy Association, Female Leaders in Energy initiative facilitates mid-career female energy professionals from South East Asia to learn from energy professionals from the USA. This presentation gives an overview of NREL scientific research studies on power grid planning with a high renewable share to mid-career female energy professionals.
