Materials Data on UI3 by Materials Project

UI3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of two UI3 sheets oriented in the (0, 1, 0) direction. U3+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight I1- atoms. There are a spread of U–I bond distances ranging from 3.12–3.44 Å. There are two inequivalent I1- sites. In the first I1- site, I1- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three equivalent U3+ atoms. In the second I1- site, I1- is bonded in an L-shaped geometry to two equivalent U3+ atoms.

Thermodynamics of Uranium Tri-Iodide from Density-Functional Theory

Density-functional theory (DFT) is employed to investigate the thermodynamic and ground-state properties of bulk uranium tri-iodide, UI3. The theory is fully relativistic and electron correlations, beyond the DFT and generalized gradient approximation, are addressed with orbital polarization. The electronic structure indicates anti-ferromagnetism, in agreement with neutron diffraction, with band gaps and a non-metallic system. Furthermore, the formation energy, atomic volume, crystal structure, and heat capacity are calculated in reasonable agreement with experiments, whereas for the elastic constants experimental data are unavailable for comparison. The thermodynamical properties are modeled within a quasi-harmonic approximation and the heat capacity and Gibbs free energy as functions of temperature agree with available calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) thermodynamic assessment of the experimental data.

Exploring the use of the pentaphenylcyclopentadienyl ligand in uranium chemistry: the crystal structure of (C

The reaction of UI3 with NaC5Ph5 in THF generated (η5-C5Ph5)UI2(THF)2 which was characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex has a four-legged piano stool structure with a 2.539 Å U– (C5Ph5 ring centroid) distance that is slightly longer than the 2.504 Å distance in (η5-C5Me5)UI2(THF)3 which has a larger formal coordination number. Although the synthesis of the mono-cyclopentadienyl complex was facile, no bis-cyclopentadienyl complexes were isolated from reactions using two equivalents of the pentaphenylcyclopentadienyl ligand per uranium. In one UI3/2NaC5Ph5 synthesis, the X-ray crystal structure of (THF)3Na(η5-C5Ph5) was obtained. Attempts to reduce (η5-C5Ph5)UI2(THF)2 did not give evidence for a UII product. KC8 reductions of the in situ reaction of NdI3 and NaC5Ph5, analogous to the synthesis of (η5-C5Ph5)UI2(THF)2, yielded an X-ray crystal structure of a solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP), [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2][C5Ph5].
