Materials Data on UBr by Materials Project

BrU is alpha-derived structured and crystallizes in the hexagonal P-6m2 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. U is bonded in a 12-coordinate geometry to six equivalent Br atoms. All U–Br bond lengths are 3.07 Å. Br is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six equivalent U atoms.

An alternative pocket for binding the N‐degrons by the UBR1 and UBR2 ubiquitin E3 ligases

The UBR family of ubiquitin ligases binds to N-termini of their targets (known as N-degron) to induce their ubiquitination and degradation via a conserved domain known as UBR-box. UBR1 and UBR2 share the highest sequence homology among the family, and substantial structural studies were previously performed for substrate binding by the UBR-boxes of UBR1 and UBR2. Here, we describe a new pocket in the UBR-boxes of UBR1 and UBR2 for binding the second residues of N-degrons through determining five co-crystal structures of the UBR-boxes with various N-degron peptides. Together with binding affinities measured by fluorescence polarization, we show that the two highly homologous UBR-boxes can interact with the second residue of an N-degron differently. In addition, the UBR-boxes undergo different conformational changes when binding N-degrons. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the sidechain of the third amino acid of an N-degron has no contribution to binding the UBR-boxes. These findings represent a new conceptual advancement for the UBR E3 ligases and the new insights described here can be leveraged for developing their selective ligands for research and potential therapies.

Convenient Syntheses of Trivalent Uranium Halide Starting Materials without Uranium Metal

Low-valent uranium coordination chemistry continues to rely heavily on access to trivalent starting materials, but these reagents are typically prepared from uranium turnings, which are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. Here we report convenient syntheses of UI 3 (THF) 4 (THF = tetrahydrofuran) and UBr 3 (THF) 4 from UCl 4 , a more accessible uranium starting material that can be prepared from commercially available uranium oxides. UCl 3 (THF) 2 (1), UBr 3 (THF) 4 (2), and UI 3 (THF) 4 (3) were prepared by single-pot reductions from UCl 4 using KH and KC 8 and converted to 2 or 3 by halide exchange with the corresponding Me 3 SiX (where X = Br or I). Reduction of UI 4 (Et 2 O) 2 (4; Et 2 O = diethyl ether) and UI 4 (1,4-dioxane) 2 (5) was also shown to cleanly yield 3. Complex 1 was also synthesized separately by the addition of anhydrous HCl to U(BH 4 ) 3 (THF) 2 , which was prepared by thermal reduction of U(BH 4 ) 4 . All three trivalent uranium halide complexes were isolated in high crystalline yields (typically 85–99%) and their formulations were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and 1 H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Elemental analysis conducted on triplicate samples of 1–3 exposed to vacuum for different time intervals revealed significant THF loss for all three complexes in as little as 15 min. Altogether, these results offer expedient entry into low-valent uranium chemistry for researchers lacking access to uranium turnings.

Bond Dissociation Energies and Electronic Calculations on the Actinide Halides ThX and UX (X = Cl, Br, I)

Resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy has been used to locate predissociation thresholds in the spectra of the actinide halides ThX and UX, where X = Cl, Br, and I. These predissociation thresholds are identified as the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of the molecules. The resulting values show very similar BDEs for the corresponding ThX and UX species, with the thorium molecules being slightly more strongly bound: D 0 (ThCl) = 5.077(6) eV, D 0 (ThBr) = 4.391(4) eV, D 0 (ThI) = 3.537(8) eV, D 0 (UCl) = 4.989(3) eV, D 0 (UBr) = 4.313(3) eV, and D 0 (UI) = 3.449(8) eV. Here, the estimated error limit is given in parentheses in units of the last reported digit. Spinor-based coupled cluster calculations have also been carried out on the halides of this work, including also ThF and UF. Here, the final D 0 values after including contributions due to basis set incompleteness, outer-core-correlation, picture-change, and QED effects are within 0.04 eV of the present experimental values in each case.
