Design Rules for Carboborothermic Reduction Synthesis of High Uranium Density UB 4 –UBC Composites

Uranium borides are promising candidate fuel forms for use in advanced nuclear reactors due to their high thermal conductivity and potential for dual use as both fuel and burnable absorber. In this work, uranium tetraboride () and uranium monoboroncarbide (UBC) composite were synthesized by using industrially scalable carboborothermic reduction method. The final uranium boride phase composition is sensitive to the sample holding crucibles ( and graphite) such that graphite supply excess carbon, promoting the formation of a predominant UBC phase. The high‐temperature in situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction of pristine –UBC show persistence , UBC, and phases while preoxidized –UBC leads to predominant and formation due to progressive oxidation and boron loss at high temperature. The oxidation behavior was further characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, allowing direct comparison with other potential accident tolerant fuels such as , , UC, and UN. The –UBC shows higher uranium loading than monolithic and demonstrates promising oxidation behavior at high temperature, pointing to its potential as an improved uranium boride‐based fuel form.

Materials Data on UBC by Materials Project

UCB1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of two UCB1 sheets oriented in the (0, 1, 0) direction. U6+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five equivalent C3- atoms. There are one shorter (2.34 Å) and four longer (2.47 Å) U–C bond lengths. B3- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one C3- atom. The B–C bond length is 1.58 Å. C3- is bonded to five equivalent U6+ and one B3- atom to form a mixture of distorted corner and edge-sharing CU5B octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 16°.

Simple Analytical Expressions for Electron Pitch Angle Diffusion Coefficients

In the present paper, we have calculated electron pitch angle diffusion coefficients due to resonant interactions with whistler mode lower band chorus (LBC), upper band chorus (UBC), and electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves. Calculations have been performed at two values of the ratio of electron plasma frequency to gyro-frequency and thirteen representative values of electron energies for the plasma sheet electrons. The numerical data of diffusion coefficients have been fitted to simple analytical expressions for each wave mode. These analytical expressions allow for simple evaluation of pitch angle diffusion coefficients for the arbitrary pitch angle, energy, the ambient magnetic field, the wave amplitude, and the ratio of plasma frequency to gyro-frequency. In the case of LBC waves, the analytical coefficients are generally within a factor of two to the numerical coefficients, except at higher pitch angles where the numerical coefficients drop to show negligible values. Likewise, also for UBC waves, the analytical coefficients are generally within a factor of two to the numerical coefficients. The analytical coefficients for ECH waves are generally in agreement with numerical coefficients. However, the analytical expressions developed for ECH waves do not reproduce sharp fluctuations, dips, and gaps, the so-called banded structure observed in the data of numerical coefficients. The effect of the shape variation on the profile of the wave spectral intensity and the effect of cold temperature on the numerical coefficients are also investigated. Applications of the analytical expressions of diffusion coefficients are discussed.

The Global Mapping of Electron Precipitation and Ionospheric Conductance From Whistler-Mode Chorus Waves

Auroral precipitation is the second major energy source after solar irradiation that ionizes the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Diffuse electron aurora caused by wave-particle interaction in the inner magnetosphere (L < 8) takes over 60% of total auroral energy flux, strongly contributing to the ionospheric conductance and thus to the ionosphere-thermosphere dynamics. This paper quantifies the impact of chorus waves on the diffuse aurora and the ionospheric conductance during quiet, medium, and strong geomagnetic activities, parameterized by AE <100, 100 < AE < 300, and AE > 300, respectively. Using chorus wave statistics and inner-magnetosphere plasma conditions from Timed History Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) observations, we directly derive the energy spectrum of diffuse electron precipitation under quasi-linear theory. We then calculate the height-integrated conductance from the wave-driven aurora spectrum using the electron impact ionization model of Fang et al. (Geophys. Res. Lett., 2010, 37) and the MSIS atmosphere model. By utilizing Fang’s ionization model, the US Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scattar Radar (NRLMSISE-00) model from 2000s for the neutral atmosphere components, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Full Diffusion Code, we improve upon the standard generalization of Maxwellian diffuse electron precipitation patterns and their resulting ionosphere conductance. Our study of global auroral precipitation and ionospheric conductance from chorus wave statistics is the first statistical model of its kind. We show that the total electron flux and conductance pattern from our results agree with those of Ovation Prime model over the pre-midnight to post-dawn sector as geomagnetic activity increases. Our study examines the relative contributions of upper band chorus (UBC) and lower band chorus wave (LBC) driven conductance in the ionosphere. We found LBC waves drove diffuse electron precipitation significantly more than UBC waves, however it is possible that THEMIS data may have underestimated the upper chorus band wave observations for magnetic latitudes below 65 degrees. ° .

Conversion of real-world aluminum scrap streams into high-performance Al–Mg–Si–Cu automotive alloys using shear assisted processing and extrusion

The conversion of post-consumer aluminum (Al) scrap into usable Al alloys without adding primary Al is challenging because of excess impurities. In this work, >99% post-consumer Twitch, used beverage cans (UBCs), and remelt scrap ingots (RSIs) were used as feedstock materials. As-cast and solution heat-treated feedstock billets were extruded using Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE) at ~510°C, followed by press quenching. To explore the development of the microstructure, texture, and underlying mechanisms and how they contribute to the overall strengthening in as-extruded and artificially aged samples, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used to collect microstructure and texture data. The enhanced strength and ductility were corroborated with the microstructural features and crystallographic texture. Simple shear $\textrm{A}/\bar{\textrm{A}}$, $\textrm{A}_1^*/\textrm{A} _2^*$ texture components along with weak $\textrm{C}$ and $\textrm{B}/\bar{\textrm{B}}$ texture components were formed during extrusion; the texture was strengthened after heat treatment. The refined second-phase particles helped to retain the deformed microstructure and texture. The contributions of dislocation and precipitate strengthening were maximized when billets were solution-heat-treated prior to extrusion. This is attributed to the formation of effective supersaturated solid solutions during the ShAPE process, which precipitate out during the peak age treatment. Overall, the highest yield strength of 305 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 350 MPa, and elongation of 12% were achieved in artificially aged samples, which are comparable to those of Al 6082-T6.

SIRT3 mediates mitofusin 2 ubiquitination and degradation to suppress ischemia reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury

Ischemia reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury (IR-induced AKI) is a life-threatening disease with many complications. Mitofusin 2 (Mfn2) ubiquitination is related to AKI. But the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. This study aimed to probe the mechanism of Mfn2 ubiquitination in IR-induced AKI development. In IR-induced AKI mouse models, orbital blood and urine were collected for assessing kidney function. The kidney injury, ultrastructure of mitochondria, and histopathology in mice were evaluated after injection of G5, an ubiquitination inhibitor. Oxygen glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) models were established in HK-2 cells, and the mitochondria were extracted. Cell viability, apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammatory reaction, mitochondrial membrane potential, and ATP production were measured. Mfn2 ubiquitination in mouse and cell models was evaluated. si-SIRT3 and pcDNA3.1-SIRT3 were transfected into cell models. Consequently, kidney function in mice was impaired by IR-induced AKI. Mfn2 ubiquitination and degradation promoted IR-induced AKI. OGD/R induced renal tubular epithelial cell injury and disrupted mitochondrial dynamics and functions through promoting Mfn2 ubiquitination. SIRT3 knockdown led to Mfn2 ubiquitination by binding to UBC; while its overexpression alleviated tubular epithelial cell injury. Briefly, SIRT3 mediates Mfn2 ubiquitination to relieve IR-induced AKI. This investigation may offer new insights for the treatment of IR-induced AKI injury.

Multi-filter spectrophotometry simulations

To complement both the multi-filter observations of quasar environments described in these proceedings, as well as the proposed UBC 2.7 m Liquid Mirror Telescope (LMT) redshift survey, we have initiated a program of simulated multi-filter spectrophotometry. The goal of this work, still very much in progress, is a better quantitative assessment of the multiband technique as a viable mechanism for obtaining useful redshift and morphological class information from large scale multi-filter surveys.

MULTI-OMICS ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF CHRONIC LOW-DOSE RADIATION AND HINDLIMB SUSPENSION ON MURINE BRAIN AND RETINA

The space environment includes hazards like radiation and microgravity which can adversely affect biological systems. We assessed multi-omics multi-tissue NASA GeneLab datasets where 6-month-old female mice were gamma irradiated (IR) and/or hindlimb unloaded (HLU) for 21 days. Whole transcriptome shotgun sequencing (RNA-Seq) and reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS) of brain and retina samples collected at 4 months post-exposure was performed to better characterize the retinal and neurological responses to spaceflight. We compared epigenomic and transcriptomic profiles within each exposure group for both tissue types to identify correlation (Pearson’s correlation test; p-value < 0.05) between gene expression and DNA methylation levels that may be related to transcriptional regulation. We then obtained genes with methylation-expression correlation that also showed differences in mean expression or dispersion between exposed and control groups (adjusted p-value < 0.25; relaxed to denote ‘hypothesis’) in the brain (37 genes in HLU, 4 in IR, and 156 in HLU+IR) or retina (92 genes in HLU, 1 in IR, and 55 in HLU+IR). Enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms for these genes are listed in Table 1 for HLU and HLU+IR for both tissue types. No enriched terms and only a few genes were detected with IR-only exposure in the brain (Chmp1a, Limd1, Rab40b, Ubc) and retina (retinoblastoma binding protein Rbbp7). Cellular components related to synapse were enriched in both tissue types. Previous analysis of differentially expressed genes in the retina after 1 month of HLU+IR showed enrichment in the somatodendritic compartment of the neuron, which was also observed in the brain 4 months post-exposure. Interestingly, genes related to ubiquitination showed correlation between methylation and expression and were differentially expressed or dispersed in different exposure groups indicating that this pathway may play an important role in multi-stressor response (Figure 1). The current multi-omics and multi-tissue analysis interrogates the epigenomic and transcriptomic impacts of radiation and hindlimb unloading, in isolation and in combination, on the retina and the brain. The results provide insight into the adaptive response to individual spaceflight hazard analogs and their interplay, as well as hypotheses to be further tested for understanding spaceflight-induced neurological and vision effects.

The Trajectory of Recent Solid State Fusion Results

Both NASA and Google have explored and funded Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) aka Solid-State Fusion or Lattice Confinement Fusion (LCF) research. NASA has funded efforts since 1989, and Google Research began in 2014. Google, and researchers initially-funded by Google, published significant scientific papers in Nature, Nature Communications and the Journal of Applied Physics. NASA began a significant set of LENR-triggering programs in 2012 resulting in papers in Physical Review C, the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and the Journal of Condensed Matter Nuclear Science. Both NASA and Google engaged researchers across fields of nuclear physics, chemistry, electrochemistry, material science and more. NASA built upon early novel gas pumping experiments then followed the patented work of the US Navy SPAWAR (US8,419,919, “System and Method to Generate Particles”) and experiments with the Naval Surface Warfare Centers. Google supported researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the University of British Columbia (UBC), MIT and others. This resulted in patent applications and two granted patents (US10264661B2, “Target structure for enhanced electron screening” and US10566094B2 “Enhanced electron screening through plasmon oscillations”). These separate efforts, unknown to the researchers at the time, provided the impetus for the DoE ARPA-E LENR program followed by the DARPA DSO “Mechanisms for Amplification of Fusion Reaction Rates in Solids” (MARRS) program. This document briefly describes the overlapping NASA and Google Research efforts in plasma loading and electron screening emphasizing the results of the latest paper in Nature Communications. The papers and patents cited are listed.
