Polymorphism and phase transitions in Na 2 U 2 O 7 from density functional perturbation theory

Polymorphism and phase transitions in sodium diuranate, Na 2 U 2 O 7 , are investigated with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). Thermal properties of crystalline α-, β- and γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 polymorphs are predicted from DFPT phonon calculations, i.e., the first time for the high-temperature γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 phase (R$\bar{3}$ with combining macron]m symmetry). The standard molar isochoric heat capacities predicted within the quasi-harmonic approximation are C p (298.15K)= 219.4 and 220.9 J K -1 mol -1 mfor P21/a α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 and C2/m β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 , respectively. Gibbs free energy calculations reveal that α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (P2 1 /a) and β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 (C2/m) are almost energetically degenerate at low temperature, with β-Na 2 U 2 O 7 becoming slightly more stable than α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 as temperature increases. Here these findings are consistent with XRD data showing a mixture of α and β phases after cooling of γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 to room temperature and the observation of a sluggish α → β phase transition above ca. 600 K. A recently observed α-Na 2 U 2 O 7 structure with P21 symmetry is also shown to be metastable at low temperature. Based on Gibbs free energy, no direct β → γ solid-solid phase transition is predicted at high temperature, although some experiments reported the existence of such phase transition around 1348 K. This, along with recent experiments, suggests the occurrence of a multi-step process consisting of initial β-phase decomposition, followed by recrystallization into γ-phase as temperature increases.

Metal–Metal Bonding in Actinide Dimers: U 2 and U 2 –

Understanding direct metal–metal bonding between actinide atoms has been an elusive goal in chemistry for years. Here we report for the first time the anion photoelectron spectrum of U 2 – . The threshold of the lowest electron binding energy (EBE) spectral band occurs at 1.0 eV, which corresponds to the electron affinity (EA) of U 2 , whereas the vertical detachment energy of U 2 – is found at EBE ~ 1.2 eV. Electronic structure calculations on U 2 and U 2 – were carried out with state-of-the-art theoretical methods. The computed values of EA(U 2 ) and EA(U) and the difference between the computed dissociation energies of U 2 and U 2 – are found to be internally consistent and consistent with experiment. Analysis of the bonds in U 2 and U 2 – shows that while U 2 has a formal quintuple bond, U 2 – has a quadruple bond, even if the effective bond orders differ only by 0.5 unit instead of one unit. Furthermore, the resulting experimental-computational synergy elucidates the nature of metal–metal bonding in U 2 and U 2 – .

Identification of the U(v) complex (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U V I(=NSiMe 3 ) in the reaction of (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U III I(THF) with N 3 SiMe 3

The U(V) imido complex (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U V I(=NSiMe 3 ), 1, was crystallographically characterized from the reaction of (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U III I(THF) with N 3 SiMe 3 which demonstrates that it can be an intermediate in the reaction which ultimately forms (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U VI (=NSiMe 3 ) 2 and (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U IV I 2 . U(V) intermediates have been proposed in such reactions, but have not been previously observed. The direct observation of 1 provides insight into the reaction mechanisms of U(III) compounds with azide reagents.

Ring-Opening in the Actinide Cyclopropyl Complexes [Cp 3 U(2,2-Diphenylcyclopropyl)] n – ( n = 0, 1)

The reaction of [Cp 3 UCl] with in situ generated 1-lithium-2,2-dipenylcyclopropane results in the formation of [Cp 3 U(2,2-diphenylcyclopropyl)] (1) in good yield. Reduction of 1 with KC 8 , in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand, results in the formation of a rare U(III) alkyl complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp 3 U(2,2-diphenylcyclopropyl)] (2). Thermolysis or photolysis of 1 for 10 d in toluene results in isomerization to the U(IV) η 1 -allyl complex, [Cp 3 U(η 1 -3,3-diphenylallyl)] (3). Moreover, photolysis of 2 in THF for 9 h at room temperature results in isomerization to the U(III) η 1 -allyl complex, [K(2,2,2-cryptand)][Cp 3 U(η 1 -3,3-diphenylallyl)] (4). Both 3 and 4 were fully characterized. Additionally, selective labeling of the C α positions of 1 and 2 with deuterium revealed that cyclopropyl ring-opening occurs via distal C–C bond cleavage via a hypothesized η 3 -allyl intermediate.

Pressure dependence of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases in U 2 Rh 1–x Pt x C 2

In this work, we report temperature (T)- and pressure (P)-dependent resistivity measurements on the isostructural compounds U 2 Rh 1–x Pt x C 2 (x = 0, 0.5, and 0.9) from which we construct a T–P–x phase diagram. Compounds with x = 0 and x = 0.5 are antiferromagnets below 22.1 and 9.4 K, respectively, and their Néel temperature (T N ) decreases under applied pressure. For x = 0, the critical pressure P c required to suppress T N to zero temperature is projected to be about 8.8 GPa, but P c for x = 0.5 is between 1.6 and 2.1 GPa. At atmospheric pressure, increasing Pt concentration in U 2 Rh (1–x) Pt x C 2 tunes magnetic transition temperatures to zero at a critical value of x c ≈ 0.7, and, consequently, we surmise the existence of a quantum-phase boundary in the P–x plane at T = 0 K that extends from (P = 0, x = xc) to (P c ≈ 8.8 GPa, x = 0). For x = 0.9, superconductivity appears at T c = 1.09 K , which decreases at a rate of ≈ –1 K/GPa that is nearly twice that found for U 2 PtC 2 whose T c is 1.47 K. Together, these results indicate that domes of magnetism and superconductivity formed with T–P–x variations are detached and that the two broken symmetries are independent of each other. Fluctuations in average composition produce rare regions that play an important role in determining physical properties of materials with noninteger x.

Raman spectroscopic investigation of ianthinite [U$_2^{4+}$(UO$_2$)$_4$O$_6$(OH)$_4$(H$_2$O)$_4$]·$5$H$_2$O, a rare mixed-valence uranium oxide hydrate

Ianthinite ([[U$_2^{4+}$(UO$_2$)$_4$O$_6$(OH)$_4$(H$_2$O)$_4$]·$5$H$_2$O) is an exotic mineral that possesses U in both tetravalent and hexavalent oxidation states and is structurally related to the U 3 O 8 polymorphs, which are commonly encountered technogenic materials in the nuclear fuel cycle. Despite the similarities between U 3 O 8 and ianthinite, and the importance of ianthinite in U paragenesis, no Raman spectra have been reported for this mineral. Here, to gain a more complete understanding of how structural attributes of ianthinite give rise to observable spectroscopic features and how these may relate to important materials in the nuclear fuel cycle, we provide, for the first time, Raman spectra of ianthinite. Ianthinite readily oxidizes at ambient conditions, complicating analysis of phase-pure material. Several analytical methods are employed herein to decouple the Raman features of ianthinite from its alteration product(s). First, a simple difference spectrum is presented, then results of Raman spectroscopic mapping are employed, and finally, we use a novel processing and analysis method. Each analysis method provides different insight into structural features that are unique to ianthinite, in particular, features that are attributable to U(IV) in distorted octahedral coordination in both ianthinite and U 3 O 8 phases.

Magnetic and electronic phases of U 2 Rh 3 Si 5

We present a detailed study of the magnetic and electronic properties of U 2 Rh 3 Si 5 , a material that has been demonstrated to exhibit a first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition. From a high-magnetic-field study, together with extensive experiments in moderate fields, we establish the magnetic phase diagrams for all crystallographic directions. The possibility of an electronic phase in a narrow interval above the Néel temperature as a precursor of a magnetic phase is discussed.

Local SU(2) × U(1) quark flavor symmetry in the RS bulk

We propose a model of quark flavor based on an additional SU(2) × U(1) local symmetry in a warped extra dimensional bulk. In contrast to other works, we break the additional gauge symmetry in the bulk via two complex scalars which acquire bulk vevs, rather than relying on brane-localized symmetry breaking. A gauge-covariant Kaluza-Klein decomposition of a theory with a bulk spontaneously broken gauge symmetry is performed, and exact expressions for the bulk profiles of all physical particles in such systems are given. The SM quark masses and mixings are then recreated using gauge-covariant bulk quark mass terms and Yukawa-like couplings to the new bulk scalars. A numerical sampling of points in the model parameter space that recreate the quark masses and mixings is performed at a KK scale of M KK = 5 TeV. We then compute the ΔF = 2 4-quark operators arising from our new flavor gauge bosons and scalars, and those arising from Kaluza-Klein modes of SM gauge bosons. By decoupling one of our bulk scalar fields to all quark fields except the right-handed up-like sector, we find that it is possible to greatly suppress tree-level contributions to the highly constrained Kaon mixing parameters. Instead, the dominant constraints on the model emerge from neutral Bd and D meson mixing. These constraints are explored with our numerical sampling of the model parameter space, and the specific contribution of the new flavor gauge bosons and scalars is discussed. We find that for a significant range of realistic flavor gauge couplings, the new gauge bosons compete with the normally dominant gluon flavor-changing currents, but flavor-changing operators emerging from the bulk scalar fields are highly suppressed. Finally, we briefly comment on flavor constraints that are independent of the flavor gauge sector arising from the Z$\overline{b}$ L b L coupling and rare top decays.

S U ( 2 ) principal chiral model with tensor renormalization group on a cubic lattice

We study the continuous phase transition and thermodynamic observables in the three-dimensional Euclidean S U ( 2 ) principal chiral field model with the triad tensor renormalization group and the anisotropic tensor renormalization group methods. Using these methods, we find results that are consistent with previous Monte Carlo estimates and the predicted renormalization group scaling of the magnetization close to criticality. These results bring us one step closer to studying finite-density quantum chromodynamics in four dimensions using tensor network methods. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Primitive quantum gates for an S U ( 2 ) discrete subgroup: Binary octahedral

We construct a primitive gate set for the digital quantum simulation of the 48-element binary octahedral ( BO ) group. This non-Abelian discrete group better approximates S U ( 2 ) lattice gauge theory than previous work on the binary tetrahedral group at the cost of one additional qubit—for a total of six—per gauge link. The necessary primitives are the inversion gate, the group multiplication gate, the trace gate, and the BO Fourier transform. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

General F-theory models with tuned (SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1))/ Z 6 symmetry

We construct a general form for an F-theory Weierstrass model over a general base giving a 6D or 4D supergravity theory with gauge group (SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1))/Z 6 and generic associated matter, which includes the matter content of the standard model. The Weierstrass model is identified by unHiggsing a model with U(1) gauge symmetry and charges q ≤ 4 previously found by the first author. This model includes two distinct branches that were identified in earlier work, and includes as a special case the class of models recently studied by Cvetič, Halverson, Lin, Liu, and Tian, for which we demonstrate explicitly the possibility of unification through an SU(5) unHiggsing. We develop a systematic methodology for checking that a parameterized class of F-theory Weierstrass models with a given gauge group G and fixed matter content is generic (contains all allowed moduli) and confirm that this holds for the models constructed here.

Reactions of Studtite UO 4 ·4H 2 O in Alkali Hydroxides: Isolation of Single-Crystal Uranate Phases under Mild Hydrothermal Conditions

Uranyl peroxide complexes, particularly studtite (UO 4 ·4H 2 O), are important phases within the nuclear fuel cycle, forming through radiolysis-induced reactions on the surfaces of spent fuel and in waste environments. Studtite has been identified in Hanford’s irradiated fuel storage basins, Chornobyl’s corium lavas, and is anticipated on Fukushima’s fuel debris. While its formation and stability have been extensively studied, the reactivity of UO 4 ·4H 2 O in highly alkaline environments such as those encountered in high-level nuclear waste remains underexplored. These environments contain molar concentrations of [OH - ] and present a chemically dynamic and reactive environment where actinide behavior is not well understood. Reported here are investigations of uranium reactions in concentrated alkali hydroxides under mild hydrothermal conditions (<200 °C) that have resulted in the isolation of the alkali metal uranates Li 2 UO 4 , α-Na 2 UO 4 , γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 , and K 2 U 2 O 7 . In contrast to conventional solid-state methods (>800 °C) that typically yield polycrystalline powders, our approach enables the isolation of these uranates as single crystals, allowing us to provide single-crystal structure solutions of certain uranates for the first time. Our findings match the results of high-level waste tank sampling, confirming that sodium diuranate (Na 2 U 2 O 7 ) is the most persistent uranium phase, potentially forming through reactions of uranyl peroxide intermediates with NaOH under radiolytic and highly alkaline conditions.

Using molecular dynamics to predict the solidus and liquidus of mixed oxides ( Th , U ) O 2 , ( Th , Pu ) O 2 and ( Pu , U ) O 2

Molecular dynamics (MD) was used to establish a mechanistic basis for the experimentally observed reduction in liquidus and solidus temperatures below the melting point of the end-members for the mixed oxides (Th,U)O 2 , (Th, Pu) O 2 and (Pu, U) O 2 . This dip is found at additions of the oxide with higher melting point to the oxide with the lower melting point. There are many causes suggested for the dip; here the distribution of the cation Frenkel energy for the mixed oxides caused by the local environment is proposed as a contributor. Furthermore, a variant of the moving interface method which yields information on the position of the solidus and liquidus boundaries, is used to predict the phase diagrams of these systems.

Globular cluster photometry with the Hubble Space Telescope. 2: U, V, and I measurements of M15

The projected density distribution of resolved stars near the center of M15 is shown to be consistent with either a power-law cusp N(r) approximately r(exp alpha), with alpha approximately -0.85 +/- 0.2, or with a King model with a core of radius approximately less than 2 sec. The inferred slope is in agreement with the theoretical value, alpha = -0.75, calculated by Bahcall and Wolf for the distribution of equal-mass stars surrounding a massive black hole and is also consistent with the radial profile expected from core collapse without a central black hole. The object AC 214 is a candidate for the central density cusp. Analysis of Monte Carlo simulations of the diffuse light indicates that, using current analysis techniques and available data, the residual light is not a reliable indicator of the true density distribution. This is contrary to earlier work. Photometric measurements in V and I of more than 5 x 10(exp 3) stars (and in U, V, and I of approximately greater than 1500 stars) are used to construct color-magnitude diagrams in the central 1 min of M15. Fourteen blue straggler candidates are identified in the inner 20 sec. The central color gradient noticed by previous researchers is caused by a central depletion of bright red giant stars rather than an excess of blue stragglers or blue horizontal branch stars.

Primitive quantum gates for an S U ( 2 ) discrete subgroup: Binary tetrahedral

We construct a primitive gate set for the digital quantum simulation of the binary tetrahedral ($\mathbb{BT}$) group on two quantum architectures. This nonabelian discrete group serves as a crude approximation to $SU(2)$ lattice gauge theory while requiring five qubits or one quicosotetrit per gauge link. The necessary basic primitives are the inversion gate, the group multiplication gate, the trace gate, and the $\mathbb{BT}$ Fourier transform over $\mathbb{BT}$. We experimentally benchmark the inversion and trace gates on ibm nairobi, with estimated fidelities between $14-55\%$, depending on the input state.
