Improved time-delay lens modelling and H 0 inference with transient sources

ABSTRACT Strongly lensed explosive transients such as supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, fast radio bursts, and gravitational waves are very promising tools to determine the Hubble constant (H0) in the near future in addition to strongly lensed quasars. In this work, we show that the transient nature of the point source provides an advantage over quasars: The lensed host galaxy can be observed before or after the transient’s appearance. Therefore, the lens model can be derived from images free of contamination from bright point sources. We quantify this advantage by comparing the precision of a lens model obtained from the same lenses with and without point sources. Based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations with the same sets of lensing parameters, we simulate realistic mock data sets of 48 quasar lensing systems (i.e. adding AGN in the galaxy centre) and 48 galaxy–galaxy lensing systems (assuming the transient source is not visible but the time delay and image positions have been or will be measured). We then model the images and compare the inferences of the lens model parameters and H0. We find that the precision of the lens models (in terms of the deflector mass slope) is better by a factor of 4.1 for the sample without lensed point sources, resulting in an increase of H0 precision by a factor of 2.9. The opportunity to observe the lens systems without the transient point sources provides an additional advantage for time-delay cosmography over lensed quasars. It facilitates the determination of higher signal-to-noise stellar kinematics of the main deflector, and thus its mass density profile, which, in turn plays a key role in breaking the mass-sheet degeneracy and constraining H0.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Detection of Millimeter-wave Transient Sources

Here we report on the serendipitous discovery of three transient millimeter-wave sources using data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. The first, detected at R.A. = 273.8138, decl. = -49.4628 at ~50σ total, brightened from less than 5 mJy to at least 1100 mJy at 150 GHz with an unknown rise time shorter than 13 days, during which the increase from 250 mJy to 1100 mJy took only 8 minutes. Maximum flux was observed on 2019 November 8. The source's spectral index in flux between 90-150 GHz was positive, α = 1.5 ± 0.2. The second, detected at R.A. = 105.1584, decl. = -11.2434 at ~20σ total, brightened from less than 20 mJy to at least 300 mJy at 150 GHz with an unknown rise time shorter than 8 days. Maximum flux was observed on 2019 December 15. Its spectral index was also positive, α = 1.8 ± 0.2. The third, detected at R.A. = 301.9952, decl. = 16.1652 at ~40σ total, brightened from less than 8 mJy to at least 300 mJy at 150 GHz over a day or less but decayed over a few days. Maximum flux was observed on 2018 September 11. Its spectrum was approximately flat, with a spectral index of α = -0.2 ± 0.1. None of the sources were polarized to the limits of these measurements. The two rising-spectrum sources are coincident in position with M and K stars, while the third is coincident with a G star.

Detection of Galactic and Extragalactic Millimeter-wavelength Transient Sources with SPT-3G

High angular resolution cosmic microwave background experiments provide a unique opportunity to conduct a survey of time-variable sources at millimeter wavelengths, a population that has primarily been understood through follow-up measurements of detections in other bands. Here we report the first results of an astronomical transient survey with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) using the SPT-3G camera to observe 1500 deg 2 of the southern sky. The observations took place from 2020 March to November in three bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. This survey yielded the detection of 15 transient events from sources not previously detected by the SPT. The majority are associated with variable stars of different types, expanding the number of such detected flares by more than a factor of two. Additionally, the stellar flares are unpolarized and bright, in some cases exceeding 1 Jy, and have durations from a few minutes to several hours. Another population of detected events last for 2–3 weeks and appear to be extragalactic in origin. Though data availability at other wavelengths is limited, we find evidence for concurrent optical activity for two of the stellar flares. Future data from SPT-3G and forthcoming instruments will provide real-time detection of millimeter-wave transients on timescales of minutes to months.

On the nature of apparent transient sources on the National Geographic Society–Palomar Observatory Sky Survey glass copy plates

Abstract We examine critically recent claims for the presence of above-atmosphere optical transients in publicly available digitized scans of Schmidt telescope photographic plate material derived from the National Geographic Society–Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. We employ the publicly available SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey catalogues to examine statistically the morphology of the sources. We develop a simple, objective, and automated image classification scheme based on a random forest decision tree classifier. We find that the putative transients are likely to be spurious artefacts of the photographic emulsion. We suggest a possible cause of the appearance of these images as resulting from the copying procedure employed to disseminate glass copy survey atlas sets in the era before large-scale digitization programmes.

UNM High Energy Physics: Task B

The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory provides a unique window into the "TeV" gamma-ray universe. HAWC provides an important 1 TeV to 1000 TeV high-mass window for indirect searches for dark matter (DM) annihilation or decay. Additional fundamental physics studies benefit from HAWC's sensitivity to variable and/or transient sources. Such transient sources include: gamma ray bursts (GRBs), temporal studies of super massive black holes (specifically Markarian (Mrk) 421 and 501), and most recently searches for gamma-ray counterparts to PeV neutrino sources (observed by IceCube) and gravitational wave sources (observed by LIGO/Virgo). The UNM (Task B) research program includes leadership of the HAWC detector and of HAWC science. During this final reporting period the UNM group includes Professor John Matthews and graduate student Zhixiang Ren with the research goal focused on the development of analysis tools to enhance the sensitivity of HAWC to <1 TeV, gamma rays. This program began in 2016 with an initial focus to work to resolve known problems with the low energy analysis bins in the HAWC data. In 2017 this evolved to the development of new analysis tools to optimize current HAWC <1 TeV sensitivity as well as how HAWC (or a future HAWC-like detector) could be modified to be significantly more sensitive to <1 TeV gamma rays. In these studies Ren lead the development and evaluation of new HAWC <1 TeV analysis tools and Matthews lead the study of possible experimental modifications to HAWC to improve the <1 TeV sensitivity.

Evaluation of measuring thermal conductivity of isotropic and anisotropic thermally insulating materials by transient plane source (Hot Disk) technique

The transient plane source (TPS) technique, also referred as the Hot Disk method, has been widely used due to its ability to measure the thermal properties of an extensive range of materials (solids, liquids, and powder). Recently, it has been recognized that typical Hot Disk sensors can influence TPS results of thermally insulating materials and lead to an overestimation of thermal conductivity. Although improvements have been proposed, they have not yet been implemented in the commercial TPS, leaving researchers with non-standardized modifications or options provided by a commercial Hot Disk apparatus. An empirical study of thermally insulating materials such as extruded polystyrene (XPS) and aerogel blanket is conducted in order to address the factors that affect the reliability of thermal conductivity k obtained using the commercial TPS apparatus. Sensor size, input power, duration of the measurements, applied pressure, and, in the case of anisotropic materials, heat capacity are investigated, and the results are compared with those using a Heat Flow Meter apparatus. The effect of sensor size on the k value is ascribed to heat loss through connecting leads and is more pronounced in smaller sensors and in materials with lower k values . In the case of XPS and aerogel, the effect becomes minimal for sensors with a radius r ≥ 6.4 mm. The low input power yields a high scattering of the results and should be avoided. Applied contact pressure and the tested region of the specimen play an important role in experiments with low-density fibrous materials due to the large percentage of heat being transferred by radiation and the heterogeneous nature of the samples, respectively. Additionally, the sensitivity of anisotropic measurements to the value of the material’s volumetric heat capacity ( ρC p ) is shown, emphasizing the need for the precise determination.

Analysis and improvement of the hot disk transient plane source method for low thermal conductivity materials

The hot disk transient plane source (TPS) method is a widely used standard technique (ISO 22007-2) for the characterization of thermal properties of materials, especially the thermal conductivity, k. Despite its well-established reliability for a wide variety of common materials, the hot disk TPS method is also known to suffer from a substantial systematic errors when applied to low-k thermal insulation materials. Here, we present a combined numerical and experimental study on the influence of the geometry of hot disk sensor on measured value of low-k materials. We demonstrate that the error is strongly affected by the finite thickness and thermal mass of the sensor's insulation layer was well as the corresponding increase of the effective heater size beyond the radius of the embedded metal heater itself. We also numerically investigate the dependence of the error on the sample thermal properties, confirming that the errors are worse in low-k samples. A simple correction function is also provided, which converts the apparent (erroneous) result from a standard hot disk TPS measurement to a more accurate value. A standard polyimide sensor was also optimized using both wet and dry etching to provide more accurate measurement directly. Experimentally corrected value of k for Airloy x56 aerogel and a commercial silica aerogel using the numerical correction factor derived based on the standard TPS sensor is in excellent agreement with the directly measured value from the TPS sensor using the optimized polyimide sensor. Finally, both of these methods can reduce the errors to less than 4% as compared to around 40% error of overestimation from raw values measured with the pristine sensor. Such results show that both the numerical correction to a pristine senor or an optimized sensor are capable of providing highly accurate value of thermal conductivity for such materials.

Expediting DECam Multimessenger Counterpart Searches with Convolutional Neural Networks

Searches for counterparts to multimessenger events with optical imagers use difference imaging to detect new transient sources. However, even with existing artifact-detection algorithms, this process simultaneously returns several classes of false positives: false detections from poor-quality image subtractions, false detections from low signal-to-noise images, and detections of preexisting variable sources. Currently, human visual inspection to remove the false positives is a central part of multimessenger follow-up observations, but when next generation gravitational wave and neutrino detectors come online and increase the rate of multimessenger events, the visual inspection process will be prohibitively expensive. We approach this problem with two convolutional neural networks operating on the difference imaging outputs. The first network focuses on removing false detections and demonstrates an accuracy of 92% on our data set. The second network focuses on sorting all real detections by the probability of being a transient source within a host galaxy and distinguishes between various classes of images that previously required additional human inspection. We find the number of images requiring human inspection will decrease by a factor of 1.5 using our approach alone and a factor of 3.6 using our approach in combination with existing algorithms, facilitating rapid multimessenger counterpart identification by the astronomical community.

All-sky Search for Transient Astrophysical Neutrino Emission with 10 Years of IceCube Cascade Events

Abstract Neutrino flares in the sky are searched for in data collected by IceCube between 2011 and 2021 May. This data set contains cascade-like events originating from charged-current electron neutrino and tau neutrino interactions and all-flavor neutral-current interactions. IceCube’s previous all-sky searches for neutrino flares used data sets consisting of track-like events originating from charged-current muon neutrino interactions. The cascade data set is statistically independent of the track data sets, and while inferior in angular resolution, the low-background nature makes it competitive and complementary to previous searches. No statistically significant flare of neutrino emission was observed in an all-sky scan. Upper limits are calculated on neutrino flares of varying duration from 1 hr to 100 days. Furthermore, constraints on the contribution of these flares to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux are presented, showing that multiple unresolved transient sources may contribute to the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux.

Transient Modelling of HTGR Thermal Load Follow in Modelica

The ability of nuclear power plants to load follow electrical power demand is particularly important as we move to higher variable renewable (VRE) energy production on low carbon energy grids. High temperature gas reactors (HTGRs) are capable of load following by adjusting thermal output, but their high temperatures and thermal inertia significantly impact the power transients they are able to follow. To aid investigation into new integrated energy systems with advanced reactors, it is necessary to have an open-source transient model of a full HTGR primary and secondary. This paper introduces two new open-source models for a HTGR and corresponding balance of plant (BOP) written for the HYBRID library developed at Idaho National Laboratory. A transient thermal load follow test case was taken by the work from Brits et al. to benchmark our open-source model against transient operation results from other proprietary codes that exist. The control scheme for the two new models in combination is discussed and a comparison of the response in transient load follow between the two codes performed.

datacenterCoolingModel

ExaDigiT is a framework for developing comprehensive digital twins of liquid-cooled supercomputers, which has three main modules: (1) a python-based Resource Allocator and Power Simulator (RAPS), (2) a Modelica-based Thermo-Fluidic cooling model, and (3) a C++-based augmented reality model built on Unreal Engine 5. The Modelica-based cooling model is primarily built-on the open-source Transient Simulation Framework of Reconfigurable Models (TRANSFORM) library and the open-source autocsm library. The library follows the templating architecture developed in the TRANSFORM and the autocsm libraries. This tool can be easily extended to model other Frontier-like liquid cooled supercomputers.

A synthetic Roman Space Telescope High-Latitude Time-Domain Survey: supernovae in the deep field

ABSTRACT NASA will launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (hereafter Roman) in the second half of this decade, which will allow for a generation-defining measurement of dark energy through multiple probes, including Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). To improve decisions on survey strategy, we have created the first simulations of realistic Roman images that include artificial SNe Ia injected as point sources in the images. Our analysis combines work done on Roman simulations for weak gravitational lensing studies as well as catalogue-level simulations of SN Ia samples. We have created a time series of images over 2 yr containing ∼1050 SNe Ia, covering a 1 deg2 subarea of a planned 5 deg2 deep survey. We have released these images publicly for community use along with input catalogues of all injected sources. We create secondary products from these images by generating coadded images and demonstrating recovery of transient sources using image subtraction. We perform first-use analyses on these images in order to measure galaxy detection efficiency, point source detection efficiency, and host-galaxy association biases. The simulated images can be found here at https://roman.ipac.caltech.edu/sims/SN_Survey_Image_sim.html.

Uncertainty Quantification of Capacitor Switching Transient Location using Machine Learning

Identification of capacitor switching transient location provides valuable insight into the state of the associated equipment. Machine learning (ML) models, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in particular, have demonstrated remarkable performance in signal location. However, ML models are data driven whose predictions are affected by noise in data and may also suffer from large extrapolation errors when applied to new conditions. Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is necessary to ensure model trustworthiness and avoid overconfident predictions in extrapolation. Here, in this work, we propose a novel UQ method, called PI3NN, to quantify prediction uncertainty of ML models and integrate the method with CNNs for transient source location. PI3NN calculates Prediction Intervals by training 3 Neural Networks and uses root-finding methods to determine the interval precisely. Additionally, PI3NN can identify out-of-distribution (OOD) data in a nonstationary condition to avoid overconfident prediction. Results indicate that with PI3NN, transient signals are not only correctly identified, but when said signals are subject to corruptions characteristic of an actual power monitoring system (e.g. non-ideal sensors), the model recognizes when it is uncertain about its predictions, effectively letting the user know when to accept or discard the results.

X-ray spectral and flux variability of the microquasar GRS 1758-258 on timescales from weeks to years

We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3–20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft state fluxes typical for transient sources in outburst. The RXTE-PCA and RXTE-ASM long-term light curves do not show any orbital modulations in the range of 2–30 d. However, in the dynamic power spectra significant peaks drift between 18.47 and 18.04 d for the PCA data, while less significant signatures between 19 d and 20 d are seen for the ASM data as well as for the Swift/BAT data. We discuss different models for the hysteresis behavior during state transitions as well as possibilities for the origin of the long term variation in the context of a warped accretion disk.

Thermally Initiated Formation of Criegee Intermediate CH 2 OO in the Oxidation of Ethane

Criegee intermediates (CIs) play an important role in atmospheric chemistry as a transient source of the OH radical through their formation by the ozonolysis of unsaturated organic compounds. Here, we report thermally initiated formation of the smallest CI (CH 2 OO) in the oxidation of ethane (CH 3 CH 3 ) that may be relevant to combustion and flames. The SiO 2 /SiC oxidation microreactor is heated to 1800 K and has a short residence time of ∼100 μs. The CH 2 OO we observe is likely formed in a lower-temperature region near the microreactor’s exit. Plausible mechanisms for CH 2 OO formation and retention under these conditions mediated by methylperoxy (CH 3 OO) radicals are discussed. Pure rotational spectra of CH 2 OO and other intermediates (HO 2 , CH 3 CHO, CH 2 CHOH, c-CH 2 OCH 2 , CH 3 CH 2 CHO, CH 3 OOH, and HCOOH) are detected with a chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter-wave spectrometer operating in the frequency range of 60–90 GHz. In conclusion, detection occurs in a molecular beam, where the species are supersonically cooled to 5 K.

First all-flavor search for transient neutrino emission using 3-years of IceCube DeepCore data

Since the discovery of a flux of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, searches for their origins have focused primarily at TeV-PeV energies. Compared to sub-TeV searches, high-energy searches benefit from an increase in the neutrino cross section, improved angular resolution on the neutrino direction, and a reduced background from atmospheric neutrinos and muons. However, the focus on high energy does not preclude the existence of sub-TeV neutrino emission where IceCube retains sensitivity. Here we present the first all-flavor search from IceCube for transient emission of low-energy neutrinos, focusing on the energy region of 5.6-100 GeV using three years of data obtained with the IceCube-DeepCore detector. We find no evidence of transient neutrino emission in the data, thus leading to a constraint on the volumetric rate of astrophysical transient sources in the range of ~ 705-2301 Gpc -3 yr -1 for sources following a subphotospheric energy spectrum with a mean energy of 100 GeV and a bolometric energy of 1 052 erg.
