Status Report of Joint RPI/ORNL NCSP Task for Thermal Neutron Total Cross Section Measurements

A new cold neutron moderator system was developed and constructed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator. This system was then used to measure the neutron total cross section in the thermal energy range for polyethylene, polystyrene, Lucite, and yttrium hydride. In tandem with these measurements, a fitting procedure was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to vary computationally simulated phonon density of states until a fit with differential and integral data was achieved. This model, combined with the new RPI total cross section data, was used to generate thermal scattering law files for the materials measured at RPI.

Measurement of the total cross section and $\rho$-parameter from elastic scattering in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

In a special run of the LHC with β* = 2.5 km, proton–proton elastic-scattering events were recorded at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of $340$ μb -1 using the ALFA subdetector of ATLAS in 2016. The elastic cross section was measured differentially in the Mandelstam t variable in the range from - t = 2.5 · 10 -4 GeV 2 to - t = 0.46 GeV 2 using 6.9 million elastic-scattering candidates. This paper presents measurements of the total cross section σ tot , parameters of the nuclear slope, and the p -parameter defined as the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic-scattering amplitude in the limit t → 0. These parameters are determined from a fit to the differential elastic cross section using the optical theorem and different parameterizations of the t-dependence. The results for σ tot and p are σ tot (pp → X) = 104.7 ± 1.1 mb, p = 0.098 ± 0.011. The uncertainty in σ tot is dominated by the luminosity measurement, and in p by imperfect knowledge of the detector alignment and by modelling of the nuclear amplitude.

Measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section at the LArIAT experiment

We present the first measurement of the negative pion total hadronic cross section on argon in a restricted phase space, which we performed at the Liquid Argon In A Testbeam (LArIAT) experiment. All hadronic reaction channels, as well as hadronic elastic interactions with scattering angle greater than 5° are included. The pions have kinetic energies in the range 100–700 MeV and are produced by a beam of charged particles impinging on a solid target at the Fermilab test beam facility. LArIAT employs a 0.24 ton active mass liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) to measure the pion hadronic interactions. For this measurement, LArIAT has developed the “thin slice method,” a new technique to measure cross sections with LArTPCs. While moderately higher, our measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section is generally in agreement with the geant4 prediction.

Photoproduction of pion pairs at high energy and small angles

Here, we explore the photoproduction mechanisms for charged and neutral pion pairs off a heavy nucleus at threshold. We calculate the production of charged pairs in the Coulomb field of the nucleus in the Born approximation using explicit expressions for the differential cross sections and their connection with the total cross section σ(γγ→π + π - ). The production of σ mesons at threshold and their subsequent decay into pions is an important mechanism and is investigated quantitatively in a framework that can be used for both charged and neutral pions. σ mesons can be produced via electromagnetic (photon exchange) or strong (ω exchange) interactions. For neutral pions, another production mechanism consists of the two-step process where charged pions are produced first and then charge exchange into two neutral pions. Differential and total cross sections are computed for each production mechanism.

Measurement of the $\bar ν_μ-$Hydrogen Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section using the NOvA Near Detector

We report a measurement of the total cross section for muon antineutrino charged-current quasi-elastic scattering on hydrogen, $\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n$, in the NOvA near detector using a $1.2\times10^{21}$ proton-on-target exposure in the NuMI beam. A selection based on topological and kinematic constraints yields 35,509 signal events in the hydrogen-rich ($10.8\%$) detector, providing the highest statistics of (anti)neutrino--hydrogen interactions measured to date. Backgrounds from (anti)neutrino interactions on heavier nuclei are constrained using dedicated data control samples, significantly reducing the related systematic uncertainties. We obtain a value $σ(\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n) = 0.538 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.010 ({\rm syst}) \pm0.055 ({\rm flux}) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ for the total cross section at an average energy of 1.9 GeV, the most precise total cross-section measurement of this process to date. The combined statistical and non-flux systematic uncertainty is more than four times smaller than the flux uncertainty, allowing a future use of this measurement to constrain the absolute $\bar ν_μ$ flux.

Meas. K+ -Ar Total Inelastic Cross Section at ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber that took hadron test beam data in 2018. The test beam included positively charged kaons with test beam momenta of 6 GeV/c and 7 GeV/c, providing a sample to study kaons to benefit future DUNE proton decay and neutrino interaction studies with kaons in the final state. The total inelastic cross section of a positively charged kaon was measured at these test beam settings using the LArIAT thin-slice method of dividing the wires of the time projection chamber into target slices for calculating the cross section, which leverages the monolithic quality of liquid argon detectors. A Bayesian-like unfolding method using RooUnfold was applied to both the incident and interacting slice distributions to measure the cross sections at both test beam momenta. The talk will discuss the method of unfolding, optimization studies for unfolding, and applying systematic uncertainties using a LArIAT-style hadronic cross section using unfolding to extract a kaon total inelastic cross section.

Measurement of the total compton scattering cross section between 6.5 and 11 GeV

The total cross section for Compton scattering off atomic electrons, $γ + e → γ' + e'$, was measured using photons with energies between 6.5 and 11.1 GeV incident on a 9 Be target as part of the PrimEx-eta experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. This is the first measurement of this fundamental QED process within this energy range. The total uncertainties of the cross section, combining the statistical and systematic components in quadrature, averaged to 3.4 % across all energy bins. This not only demonstrates the capability of this experimental setup to perform precision cross-section measurements at forward angles but also allows us to compare with state-of-the-art QED calculations.

First measurement of the total inelastic cross section of positively charged kaons on argon at energies between 5.0 and 7.5 GeV

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/𝑐 beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380 ± 26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/𝑐 setting and 379 ± 35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/𝑐 setting.

First Measurement of $π^+$-Ar and $p$-Ar Total Inelastic Cross Sections in the Sub-GeV Energy Regime with ProtoDUNE-SP Data

The ProtoDUNE-SP detector, a kiloton-scale prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), is the largest liquid argon time projection chamber built to date. Operated at CERN from 2018 to 2020, it collected both cosmic-ray data and a beam consisting of positively-charged particles with discrete momentum settings across a range of 0.3 GeV/$c$ to 7 GeV/$c$. In this letter, we report the total inelastic cross section measurements for $π^+$-Ar and $p$-Ar interactions using selected $π^+$ and proton samples from the 1 GeV/$c$ beam data. These results provide the first measurement of the total inelastic cross sections for $π^+$-Ar in the 500-900 MeV kinetic energy range and for $p$-Ar below 450 MeV, both of which are directly relevant to the DUNE energy range. The measured cross sections are consistent with predictions and provide a dataset that was previously unavailable for argon targets. These measurements are essential for constraining neutrino-argon interaction models, which are crucial for the precision physics goals of the upcoming DUNE experiment.

The total neutron cross section of liquid and solid ammonia

Ammonia is a material of interest for future neutron moderators at high-power sources due to its high hydrogen density, low melting point, and resistance to polymerization in an intense radiation field. Its performance in such applications cannot currently be calculated due to the absence of suitable computer models for the interaction of neutrons with ammonia under relevant conditions. In an effort to develop suitable scattering kernels for computer simulations of moderator performance, we have conducted a series of Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics calculations of the molecular-level thermal properties of ammonia at various temperatures within both the solid and liquid phases. In this paper, we compare computer calculations for the energy-dependent total neutron cross section of ammonia, based on these models, to experimental measurements of those cross sections at temperatures of 221 K, 180 K, and 35 K. The experimental data were collected over an energy range from 0.1 meV to 10 eV using time-of-flight techniques at the Low Energy Neutron Source (LENS) facility at Indiana University. This comparison provides a first validation in the development of thermal scattering libraries for Monte Carlo source design simulations based on liquid and solid ammonia. In conclusion, we also provide some insights into where additional development of tools for creating such models may be needed.

A Study of the Covariance Data in ENDF/B VIII.0 for Low Z Isotopes

Thirty group covariance data have been produced from ENDF/B VIII.0 MF 33 for H1, H2, He4, Li6, Li7, Be9, B10, B11, C12, C13, N15, O16, the JENDL O16 and F19. Multi-group cross section covariance data was produced by NJOY routine ERRORR. Negative eigenvalues were found only for F19, but the covariance constraints required for the condition of the sum of partial cross sections being equal to the resultant total cross section were found to be incorrect for H2, Li6, B10, C12, C13, and O16. An easy correction is suggested for Li6 and C13. In closing, an expansion of the ENDF-6 formats manual is suggested for the MF 33 chapter and a new proposed covariance normalization scheme is proposed.

Measurements of Higgs boson production by gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion using and vector-boson using $H$ → $WW*$ → $evμv$ decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in proton-proton collisions is measured in the $H$ → $WW*$ → $evμv$ decay channel. The Large Hadron Collider delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The total cross sections for Higgs boson production by gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion times the $H$ $\rightarrow$ $WW$* branching ratio are measured to be 12.0 ± 1.4 and ${0.75}_{- 0.16}^{+ 0.19}$ pb, respectively, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 10.4 ± 0.6 and 0.81 ± 0.02 pb. Higgs boson production is further characterized through measurements of Simplified Template Cross Sections in a total of 11 kinematic fiducial regions.

Glauber-Theory Calculations of High-Energy Nuclear Scattering Observables Using Variational Monte Carlo Wave Functions

Experiments using intermediate- to high-energy radioactive nuclear beams present numerous findings. Extracting important properties of physical observables relies on a firm theoretical analysis. Though Glauber theory is believed to work well, no convincing calculation has so far been done. Here, we perform ab initio Glauber theory calculations of both elastic differential cross sections and total reaction cross sections for p+ 12 C, 12 C+ 12 C, and 6 He+ 12 C systems. The wave functions of both 6 He and 12 C are generated by variational Monte Carlo calculations with spatial and spin-isospin correlations induced by realistic two- and three-nucleon potentials. Glauber’s phase-shift function is computed by Monte Carlo integration up to all orders of nucleon-nucleon multiple scatterings. We show an excellent performance of the Glauber description to the selected data on the above systems. We also find that the cumulant expansion of the phase-shift function converges rapidly up to the second order for the above systems. This finding will open up interesting applications for the analysis of high-energy nuclear experiments.
