Materials Data on TmIn by Materials Project

TmIn is Tetraauricupride structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Tm is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent In atoms. All Tm–In bond lengths are 3.22 Å. In is bonded in a body-centered cubic geometry to eight equivalent Tm atoms.

Detecting impacts of surface development near weather stations since 1895 in the San Joaquin Valley of California

Abstract Temperature readings observed at surface weather stations have been used for detecting changes in climate due to their long period of observations. The most common temperature metrics recorded are the daily maximum (TMax) and minimum (TMin) extremes. Unfortunately, influences besides background climate variations impact these measurements such as changes in (1) instruments, (2) location, (3) time of observation, and (4) the surrounding artifacts of human civilization (buildings, farms, streets, etc.) Quantifying (4) is difficult because the surrounding infrastructure, unique to each site, often changes slowly and variably and is thus resistant to general algorithms for adjustment. We explore a direct method of detecting this impact by comparing a single station that experienced significant development from 1895 to 2019, and especially since 1970, relative to several other stations with lesser degrees of such development (after adjustments for the (1) to (3) are applied). The target station is Fresno, California (metro population ~ 15,000 in 1900 and ~ 1 million in 2019) situated on the eastern side of the broad, flat San Joaquin Valley in which several other stations reside. A unique component of this study is the use of pentad (5-day averages) as the test metric. Results indicate that Fresno experienced + 0.4 °C decade −1 more nighttime warming (TMin) since 1970 than its neighbors—a time when population grew almost 300%. There was little difference seen in TMax trends between Fresno and non-Fresno stations since 1895 with TMax trends being near zero. A case is made for the use of TMax as the preferred climate metric relative to TMin for a variety of physical reasons. Additionally, temperatures measured at systematic times of the day (i.e., hourly) show promise as climate indicators as compared with TMax and especially TMin (and thus TAvg) due to several complicating factors involved with daily high and low measurements.

Surface Conversion of Single-Crystal Bi 2 Se 3 to β-In 2 Se 3

In this work, we demonstrate that the surface layers of single-crystal layered-2D Bi 2 Se 3 can be converted to layered-2D rhombohedral ß-In 2 Se 3 by annealing under a trimethylindium (TMIn) flux. Samples were prepared in a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) chamber, then transferred under vacuum to a surface analysis chamber for analysis with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy. Additional ex situ characterization included x-ray diffraction, transmission-electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental mapping, and Raman spectroscopy. The resulting single-crystal ß-In 2 Se 3 adopts the rhombohedral crystal structure (space group R-3m) and orientation of the underlying Bi 2 Se 3 , and the excess Bi atoms generated by this process create an underlying region of Bi-rich Bi x Se y . Due to the difference in bandgap between Bi 2 Se 3 and In 2 Se 3 , this conversion reaction presents a pathway to lateral heterojunctions if only selected regions are converted by masking the surface to spatially define the TMIn exposure. The conversion may also have implications for heteroepitaxy, because the in-plane lattice constants of Bi 2 Se 3 and In 2 Se 3 (0001) surfaces match those of InP and GaAs (111), respectively, and the natural cleavage planes of a layered-2D crystal facilitate substrate removal and reuse.

CMIP6-based Multi-model Hydroclimate Projection over the Conterminous US

We present a suite of high-resolution downscaled hydro-climate projections over the conterminous United States (CONUS) based on a six-member General Climate Model (GCM) ensemble from the Coupled Models Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6). The CMIP6 GCMs are downscaled using two different downscaling approaches (statistical-based DBCCA & dynamical-based RegCM) based on two meteorological reference observations (Daymet & Livneh), and then fed to two calibrated hydrologic models (VIC & PRMS) to simulate projected future hydrologic responses. Each ensemble member covers 1980–2019 in the historic period and 2020–2059 in the near-term future period under the high-end (SSP585) emission scenario. Major variables such as daily maximum temperature (tmax), daily minimum temperature (tmin), daily total precipitation (prcp), daily average wind speed (wind), and daily total runoff (runoff) at 1/24° (~4 km) spatial resolution across the CONUS are provided through this data portal. This dataset is derived to support the SECURE Water Act Section 9505 Assessment for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO).
