TEM Analysis of Interfaces in Diffusion-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramics Joined Using Metallic Interlayers

Silicon Carbide (SiC) is a promising material for thermo-structural applications due to its excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. However, joining and integration technologies are indispensable for this material in order to fabricate large size and complex shape components with desired functionalities. Although diffusion bonding techniques using metallic interlayers have been commonly utilized to bond various SiC ceramics, detailed microstructural observation by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) of the bonded area has not been carried out due to difficulty in preparing TEM samples. In this study, we tried to prepare TEM samples from joints of diffusion bonded SiC ceramics by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) system and carefully investigated the interfacial microstructure by TEM analysis. The samples used in this study were SiC fiber bonded ceramics (SA-Tyrannohex: SA-THX) diffusion bonded with metallic interlayers such as Ti, TiMo, and Mo-B. In this presentation, the result of microstructural analysis obtained by TEM observations and the influence of metallic interlayers and fiber orientation of SA-THX on the joint microstructure will be discussed.

General surface equations for glancing incidence telescopes

A generalized set of equations are derived for two mirror glancing incidence telescopes using Fermat's principle, a differential form of the law of reflection, the generalized sine condition, and a ray propagation equation described in vector form as a theoretical basis. The resulting formulation groups the possible telescope configurations into three distinct classes which are the Wolter, Wolter-Schwarzschild, and higher-order telescopes in which the Hettrick-Bowyer types are a subset. Eight configurations are possible within each class depending on the sign and magnitude of the parameters.

Transverse ray aberrations of Wolter type 1 telescopes

Transverse ray aberration expansions are derived for Wolter type 1 telescopes. The analysis gives third order aberration terms, most of the fifth order terms and two seventh order terms as functions of system parameters and entrance aperture coordinates. The third order distortion is negligible and, therefore, this term is omitted in the expansions. The spot diagrams derived from exact ray tracing and aberration expansions agree well. The importance of fifth and seventh order terms is discussed. The derived aberration expansions are also valid for Wolter type 2 telescopes.

OSAC analysis of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) telescope

An investigation is made of the sensitivity of the image quality for the proposed FUSE telescope to mirror misalignments and a wide spatial frequency range of figure errors. Representative figure error data was obtained for the analysis from measurements made on the SEUTS (Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope Spectrograph) telescope mirrors. The tolerancing analysis was carried out with the aid of the Optical Surface Analysis Code (OSAC) program.

Aberrations for grazing incidence telescopes

The wavefront aberration polynomial and transverse ray aberration expansions will be derived for grazing incidence two-mirror Wolter telescopes including all paraboloid-hyperboloid and paraboloid-ellipsoid combinations. The reference sphere is determined with the help of the principal surface of the telescope, and the aberration polynomials will be given as functions of the coordinates of the ray intersection with the reference sphere. Third -and some of the fifth-order and seventh-order aberration terms will be analyzed. Also, the well-known relationship between wavefront aberration polynomials and transverse ray aberration polynomials will be verified.

Formula for the rms blur circle radius of Wolter telescope based on aberration theory

A formula for the rms blur circle for Wolter telescopes has been derived using the transverse ray aberration expressions of Saha (1985), Saha (1984), and Saha (1986). The resulting formula for the rms blur circle radius over an image plane and a formula for the surface of best focus based on third-, fifth-, and seventh-order aberration theory predict results in good agreement with exact ray tracing. It has also been shown that one of the two terms in the empirical formula of VanSpeybroeck and Chase (1972), for the rms blur circle radius of a Wolter I telescope can be justified by the aberration theory results. Numerical results are given comparing the rms blur radius and the surface of best focus vs the half-field angle computed by skew ray tracing and from analytical formulas for grazing incidence Wolter I-II telescopes and a normal incidence Cassegrain telescope.

Image defects from surface and alignment errors in grazing incidence telescopes

The rigid body motions and low frequency surface errors of grazing incidence Wolter telescopes are studied. The analysis is based on surface error descriptors proposed by Paul Glenn. In his analysis, the alignment and surface errors are expressed in terms of Legendre-Fourier polynomials. Individual terms in the expression correspond to rigid body motions (decenter and tilt) and low spatial frequency surface errors of mirrors. With the help of the Legendre-Fourier polynomials and the geometry of grazing incidence telescopes, exact and approximated first order equations are derived in this paper for the components of the ray intercepts at the image plane. These equations are then used to calculate the sensitivities of Wolter type I and II telescopes for the rigid body motions and surface deformations. The rms spot diameters calculated from this theory and OSAC ray tracing code agree very well. This theory also provides a tool to predict how rigid body motions and surface errors of the mirrors compensate each other.

The embedded objects in epsilon Cha I cloud

A study was made of the embedded objects in the epsilon Cha I cloud. General shapes of the spectra were constructed for the members in the cloud. The near infrared data were compiled from the literature and combined with the IRAS Point Source Catalog information. Pointed observations by the IRAS were used in the regions of high source density where the Point Source Catalog is confused. Member objects near the late B star HD 97300 were measured recently in the 3 to 10 micron bands using the ESO 2.2 m telescope in order to study the effects of disks seen in other young stellar objects. A picture is presented of the complete initial luminosity function in the epsilon Cha I cloud. The observations were compared with the theoretical views on low mass star formation.

Theoretical performance of novel multipliers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths

A theoretical comparison of various low and high order multipliers for 200 GHz and 1 THz has been carried out. Novel diodes including single barrier varactors, barrier-intrinsic-n(+)diodes and high electron mobility varactors are shown to have excellent theoretical performance, comparable or better than the conventional Schottky varactors for single and double diode frequency multipliers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, whereas quantum well diodes, since they suffer from high resistive losses, are shown to be less attractive. In comparison to the conventional Schottky varactor, these new diodes have some potential advantages in their characteristics such as a stronger nonlinearity or a special symmetry. For future optimization some general comments on these advantages as well as other factors affecting multiplication are given.

Barrier/n/n+ Varactor Frequency Multipliers

Barrier/n/n+ (BNN+) varactor diodes developed as frequency multipliers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Devices required to serve as frequency triplers or quintuplers to provide powers of order of milliwatts at frequencies from 0.1 THz to about 1 THz. Feature Mott or heterojunction barriers and back-to-back diode configuration, which make it possible to obtain symmetrical capacitance-versus-voltage characteristics with high ratio between maximum and minimum capacitances. Extension of barrier/intrinsic/n+ (BIN+) concept described in "BIN Diode for Submillimeter Wavelengths" (NPO-17258).

Anomalous capacitance of quantum well double-barrier diodes

The S-parameters of several different quantum well double barrier diodes have been measured. A technique has been developed for measuring whisker contacted diodes with an HP 8510B automatic network analyzer. Special coaxial mounts using K-connectors were designed to enable measurements up to 20 GHz. The voltage-dependent conductance and capacitance were derived from the measured reflection coefficient of each device. The C/V characteristics were observed to exhibit an anomalous increase at voltages corresponding to the negative differential resistance region (NDR). These are the first reported S-parameter measurements in the negative differential resistance region of quantum well double barrier diodes. A theory is presented that explains, in part, the observed results.

Quantum-well diode frequency multipliers - Varistor case

Local oscillators for heterodyne receivers at submillimeter wavelengths are typically made using a fundamental source followed by a harmonic frequency multiplier. An investigation of the required circuit embedding conditions for a possible new harmonic generator, the quantum-well resonant-tunneling diode, is summarized. A low-frequency multiplier has been tested that employs the resistive nonlinearity of the device as opposed to the reactive nonlinearity. The results show good agreement between practice and theory.

VIEWCACHE: An incremental pointer-based access method for autonomous interoperable databases

One of biggest problems facing NASA today is to provide scientists efficient access to a large number of distributed databases. Our pointer-based incremental database access method, VIEWCACHE, provides such an interface for accessing distributed data sets and directories. VIEWCACHE allows database browsing and search performing inter-database cross-referencing with no actual data movement between database sites. This organization and processing is especially suitable for managing Astrophysics databases which are physically distributed all over the world. Once the search is complete, the set of collected pointers pointing to the desired data are cached. VIEWCACHE includes spatial access methods for accessing image data sets, which provide much easier query formulation by referring directly to the image and very efficient search for objects contained within a two-dimensional window. We will develop and optimize a VIEWCACHE External Gateway Access to database management systems to facilitate distributed database search.

VIEWCACHE: An incremental pointer-base access method for distributed databases. Part 1: The universal index system design document. Part 2: The universal index system low-level design document. Part 3: User's guide. Part 4: Reference manual. Part 5: UIMS test suite

The goal of the Universal Index System (UIS), is to provide an easy-to-use and reliable interface to many different kinds of database systems. The impetus for this system was to simplify database index management for users, thus encouraging the use of indexes. As the idea grew into an actual system design, the concept of increasing database performance by facilitating the use of time-saving techniques at the user level became a theme for the project. This Final Report describes the Design, the Implementation of UIS, and its Language Interfaces. It also includes the User's Guide and the Reference Manual.

An incremental database access method for autonomous interoperable databases

We investigated a number of design and performance issues of interoperable database management systems (DBMS's). The major results of our investigation were obtained in the areas of client-server database architectures for heterogeneous DBMS's, incremental computation models, buffer management techniques, and query optimization. We finished a prototype of an advanced client-server workstation-based DBMS which allows access to multiple heterogeneous commercial DBMS's. Experiments and simulations were then run to compare its performance with the standard client-server architectures. The focus of this research was on adaptive optimization methods of heterogeneous database systems. Adaptive buffer management accounts for the random and object-oriented access methods for which no known characterization of the access patterns exists. Adaptive query optimization means that value distributions and selectives, which play the most significant role in query plan evaluation, are continuously refined to reflect the actual values as opposed to static ones that are computed off-line. Query feedback is a concept that was first introduced to the literature by our group. We employed query feedback for both adaptive buffer management and for computing value distributions and selectivities. For adaptive buffer management, we use the page faults of prior executions to achieve more 'informed' management decisions. For the estimation of the distributions of the selectivities, we use curve-fitting techniques, such as least squares and splines, for regressing on these values.
