Structure and thermodynamics of calcium rare earth silicate oxyapatites, Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm)

Calcium rare earth silicate oxyapatites, (Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ), are of interest as components of glass-ceramic nuclear waste forms. To assess their long-term behavior in a geologic repository, it is essential to determine their structure and thermodynamic stability at relevant conditions. Here, in this work, we performed detailed structural and thermodynamic investigations on Ca 2 Pr 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , Ca 2 Tb 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , Ca 2 Ho 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , and Ca 2 Tm 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 by high energy synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld analysis and high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry. Enthalpies of formation from constituent oxides (ΔH f,ox ) were determined to be -765.1 ± 22.8 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Pr 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; -638.9 ± 20.5 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Tb 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; -643.3 ± 10.3 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Ho 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; and -403.2 ± 5.1 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Tm 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 . These thermodynamic parameters were used in assessing the thermochemical stability of these phases in the presence of water vapor from room temperature to 600 K, as encountered in the subsurface environments of a geological repository.

Syntheses and Crystal Structures of Rare-Earth Oxyapatites Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm)

Four different rare-earth oxyapatites of Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm) were synthesized using a solution-based method followed by drying, calcination, and high-temperature sintering in air. X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were performed on the synthesized oxyapatites. Here, the RE oxyapatites crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6 3 /m with similar unit cell parameters, increasing linearly with larger RE cations. The unit cell volumes increase linearly whereas the densities decrease nonlinearly with larger RE cations. Raman spectra showed intense bands of the symmetric bending and stretching modes of SiO 4 at ~ 400 and 860 cm -1 regions, respectively. The bands generally shifted to higher frequencies with smaller RE cations in the structures.

Visible emission spectra of thermographic phosphors under x-ray excitation

Thermographic phosphors have been employed for temperature sensing in challenging environments, such as on surfaces or within solid samples exposed to dynamic heating, because of the high temporal and spatial resolution that can be achieved using this approach. Typically, UV light sources are employed to induce temperature-sensitive spectral responses from the phosphors. However, it would be beneficial to explore x-rays as an alternate excitation source to facilitate simultaneous x-ray imaging of material deformation and temperature of heated samples and to reduce UV absorption within solid samples being investigated. Here, the phosphors BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu (BAM), Y 2 SiO 5 :Ce, YAG:Dy, La 2 O 2 S:Eu, ZnGa 2 O 4 :Mn, Mg 3 F 2 GeO 4 :Mn, Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb, and ZnO were excited using incident synchrotron x-ray radiation. These materials were chosen to include conventional thermographic phosphors as well as x-ray scintillators (with crossover between these two categories). X-ray-induced thermographic behavior was explored through the measurement of visible spectral response with varying temperature. The incident x-rays were observed to excite the same electronic energy level transitions in these phosphors as UV excitation. Similar shifts in the spectral response of BAM, Y 2 SiO 5 :Ce, YAG:Dy, La 2 O 2 S:Eu, ZnGa 2 O 4 :Mn, Mg 3 F 2 GeO 4 :Mn, and Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb were observed when compared to their response to UV excitation found in literature. Some phosphors were observed to thermally quench in the temperature ranges tested here, while the response from others did not rise above background noise levels. This may be attributed to the increased probability of non-radiative energy release from these phosphors due to the high energy of the incident x-rays. These results indicate that x-rays can serve as a viable excitation source for phosphor thermometry.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland family R 2 Be 2 SiO 7 ( R = Nd , Sm , Gd-Yb )

Compounds forming the quasi-two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) have attracted significant experimental and theoretical attention in the field of frustrated magnetism. This is primarily due to their realization of an exactly soluble J 1 –J 2 orthogonal dimer model capable of hosting magnetic order, dimer singlet, and plaquette singlet phases in zero applied field and their complex magnetic phase diagrams with fractional magnetization plateaus and possible superfluid and supersolid phases found between the plateau states. The discovery and characterization of SSL compounds based on rare-earth magnetic ions provide a direct route to study the stability and properties of these exotic magnetic phases in systems with a variety of different magnetic anisotropies. In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and magnetic characterization of polycrystalline samples of the R 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 family, where R=Nd, Sm, and Gd-Yb. All family members crystallize in the space group $P\bar{⁢4}⁢2_1⁢m$ (113) and show no signs of long-range magnetic order above 2 K, except for R=Tb which orders antiferromagnetically at 2.6 K.
