Characterizing Current THD’s Dependency on Solar Irradiance and Supraharmonics Profiling for a Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Power Plant

The rapidly increasing distributed energy resources (DERs) in power systems are now getting interconnected to set community grid structures, where power quality will be a major concern. The grid-to-grid (G2G) bidirectional power transfer among the distribution microgrid will not be considered commercially feasible unless the upstream harmonics are under the limits. The aggregation of such harmonics, measured as total harmonic distortion (THD), is feared to be beyond tolerable limits with the progression of rooftop grid-tied PV-like installations. Hence, this THD needs to be characterized with DER generation end variables. In this work, the photovoltaic (PV) DERs’ dependency on environment variables such as irradiance was profiled in the context of generating and injecting harmonics into the grid. A mathematical model of a grid-tied three-phase PV DER was developed as part of this correlation characterization, matching the fundamental unit structure of a 1.4 MW solar canopy located on the Florida International University (FIU) Miami campus. To determine the qualitative association with produced THD patterns, the model was evaluated with various irradiance settings. A real-time digital simulation (RTDS) platform was used to verify it. Following this confirmation, sets of data from power quality meters at the point of common coupling and FIU field sensors were utilized to validate further the correlation model. The results showed that the grid current’s THD exhibited a high correlation with the irradiance profile and its variation over time. The early morning and late afternoon periods of the day, associated with a low irradiance, constantly had higher harmonics generated from the PV DER. The midday THD was rather rational with partial shadings, hence a geolocation-dependent factor. These findings were verified by an RTDS and validated by real field data. In quantifying the THD injected by a single DER at a high-frequency (2–150 kHz) supraharmonics (SH) level, a 3% peak increment in magnitude was observed from the high-fixed to the low-fixed irradiance profile. The correlation characteristics depicted that the hybrid microgrid suffered from a daytime-dependent harmonic insertion from the grid-tied DER. This is a global problem unless specific measures are taken to mitigate the harmonics. The electrically notorious higher-frequency SH was found to increase proportionally. The G2G power transfer can be limited because of the higher THD in the early morning and late afternoon, which will also worsen because the numbers of grid-tied PV DERs (i.e., rooftop solar and industrial solar) are likely to increase rapidly soon. The community grid structure can thus have a controlled harmonics filtration setup purposefully designed to address the findings of this work, which also fall within the scope of our future research.

Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and Pr(thd) 3 as Volatile Carriers for Actinium-225. Deposition of Actinium-Doped Praseodymium Boride Thin Films for Potential Use in Brachytherapy

Here we show that the praseodymium N,N-dimethylaminodiboranate complex Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate complex Pr(thd) 3 can serve as volatile carriers for 225 Ac. The actinium coordination complexes Ac(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and Ac(thd) 3 are the likely species subliming with the carrier material. A sample of 225 Ac-doped Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 was used to deposit amorphous 225 Ac-doped praseodymium boride films on glass and Si(100) at 300 °C. Furthermore, the α emission spectra of the refractory films are well-resolved, suggesting that they could be used as radioactive implants for brachytherapy and related treatments.

THD-C Sheet: A Novel Nonbenzenoid Carbon Allotrope with Tetra-, Hexa-, and Dodeca-Membered Rings

Here, we propose a novel two-dimensional carbon-based structure with tetra-, hexa-, and dodeca-membered rings, which we refer to by the abbreviated name, THD-C. The structure presents a mixture of sp–sp 2 hybridization and can potentially be synthesized by the topological assembly of 4-ethynyldiphenylacetylene molecules. By employing first-principles calculations, the stability and ease of synthesis of the sheet are investigated and compared with various C-allotropes. We predict its metallic behavior and excellent kinetic and dynamic stability. Due to the crystal structure of the sheet, a strong mechanical anisotropy is observed. The effects of functionalization on the electronic properties of the material are also studied, and different semiconducting systems are obtained. The potential of THD-C for energy storage in metal-based batteries, hydrogen storage, and catalysis is also investigated, and we find a superior performance in comparison to graphite and other allotropes. The quantum confinement effect is investigated by constructing nanoribbons and nanotubes of various sizes. For ribbons, we find that tailor-made electronic and magnetic properties can be obtained and explored in potential spintronic devices. Additionally, we observe that nanotubes are conducting irrespective of their chirality and can potentially be used for capture, storage, and separation of industrially relevant small gas molecules.

Design and analysis of dudded fuel experiments at the National Ignition Facility

Recent experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) within the past 2 years have achieved the burning plasma state and exceeded the Lawson criterion for the first time in the laboratory. Here, we report on a set of experiments where the deuterium and tritium (DT) ice layers were replaced with dudded tritium, hydrogen, and deuterium (THD) fuel mixtures to remove the influence of alpha-heating on hot spot dynamics. The hot spot compression and yield in the absence of alpha particle self-heating were measured to assess the proximity of NIF implosions toward the ignition cliff. We find that the “burn-off” Lawson parameters χnoα inferred from the THD experiments are in good agreement with the inferences from postshot simulations of the DT-layered implosions. The THD for burning plasma shot N210307 yielded χnoα≈0.88±0.03 while the THD for ignition shot N210808 yielded χnoα≈1.04±0.04. These results also provide important context for the observed variability in the repeat attempts of ignition shot N210808 since implosions on the ignition cliff are expected to exhibit very large variations in the fusion yield from small changes in the initial conditions.

Climatology of aerosol properties at an atmospheric monitoring site on the northern California coast

Between April 2002 and June 2017, the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made continuous measurements of a suite of in situ aerosol optical properties at a long-term monitoring site near Trinidad Head (THD), California. In addition to aerosol optical properties, between 2002–2006 a scanning humidograph system was operated, and inorganic ion and total aerosol mass concentrations were obtained from filter measurements. A combined analysis of these datasets demonstrates consistent patterns in aerosol climatology and highlights changes in sources throughout the year. THD is predictably dominated by sea salt aerosols; however, marine biogenic aerosols are the largest contributor to PM1 in the warmer months. Additionally, a persistent combustion source appears in the winter, likely a result of wintertime home heating. While the influences of local anthropogenic sources from vehicular and marine traffic are visible in the optical aerosol data, their influence is largely dictated by the wind direction at the site. Comparison of the THD aerosol climatology to that reported for other marine sites shows that the location is representative of clean marine measurements, even with the periodic influence of anthropogenic sources.

Efficient transfer hydrodehalogenation of halophenols catalyzed by Pd supported on ceria

We report the transfer hydrodehalogenation (THD) of halophenols is efficiently catalyzed by palladium supported on high surface area ceria (Pd/CeO 2 ) under mild conditions (65 °C) using isopropanol (iPrOH) as hydrogen source. The reactivity of 4-halophenols (4-X-PhOH) varies in the order 4-F-PhOH > 4-Cl-PhOH > 4-Br-PhOH > > 4-I-PhOH and appears to be controlled by the desorption of halides from the catalyst surface. Kinetic analysis of the reactions and temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR) experiments indicate that oxidative addition of C-X bonds and H-abstraction from isopropoxide compete for the same active sites on Pd. The catalyst was able to conduct the THD of various hazardous pollutants and emerging contaminants (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), pentachlorophenol, pentafluorophenol and triclosan).

Alpha heating of indirect-drive layered implosions on the National Ignition Facility

We report in order to understand how close current layered implosions in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion are to ignition, it is necessary to measure the level of alpha heating present. To this end, pairs of experiments were performed that consisted of a low-yield tritium–hydrogen–deuterium (THD) layered implosion and a high-yield deuterium–tritium (DT) layered implosion to validate experimentally current simulation-based methods of determining yield amplification. The THD capsules were designed to reduce simultaneously DT neutron yield (alpha heating) and maintain hydrodynamic similarity with the higher yield DT capsules. The ratio of the yields measured in these experiments then allowed the alpha heating level of the DT layered implosions to be determined. The level of alpha heating inferred is consistent with fits to simulations expressed in terms of experimentally measurable quantities and enables us to infer the level of alpha heating in recent high-performing implosions.

DC Link Voltage Balancing of the Active Front-End for the Extreme Fast Charging Stations

One of the most important challenges of the extreme fast charging (XFC) stations is to balance the DC link voltages of the active front-end (AFE). The multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter is a great topology for the AFE applications due to the high power density, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and a low number of active and passive components. In this paper, a technique is proposed for balancing DC-link capacitor voltages of a three-phase CHB converter, when a phase shiftPWM modulation technique is used on all cells of the converter. To reach this goal, the redundant states of the CHB converters are used for generating different AC voltage levels by sorting the voltages of the converters. The proposed voltage balancing technique uses the principles that are employed for the DC link voltage balancing of the low-frequency modulation techniques to balance the DC link voltages of the CHB converter. As shown in this paper, the DC link voltages of the CHB converter can accurately be balanced very fast without using PI controllers, which are used in the conventional DC link voltage balancing techniques. A controller also is proposed which will be used to control the dq currents of the CHB converter. To verify the advantages of the proposed technique, the simulation results of the proposed technique will be carried out in a three-phase 7-cell CHB AFE.

Simple and Robust Carrier-Based PWM Technique for Single-Stage Three-phase Rectifier Indirect Matrix Converter

Indirect matrix converters (IMC) can offer high efficiency, high power density, and bidirectional power flow capability with a single-stage three-to single-phase AC-AC power conversion integrating a conventional three-phase active rectifier with a primary side full-bridge inverter of a dual active bridge converter. However, the IMCs generally require space vector modulation techniques, leading to complex sectors and dwell times calculations. A practical implementation of the modulation methods with a commonly used digital signal processor becomes even more challenging when considering power factor correction, harmonics reduction, and deadtime between sector transitions. This paper proposes a simple and robust carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique determined through a voltage-source inverter (VSI) to current-source inverter (CSI) to IMC conversion. This translation enables the adoption of all conventional VSI control methods with active and reactive power control in the IMCs through simple carrier and reference waveform comparison. The VSI vectors are first one-on-one matched with CSI vectors and translated to IMC modulation signals without calculating sectors and dwell times. Nine different carrier waveforms are proposed, and the converter performance is analyzed. Grid current THD and efficiency are estimated for each modulation method. The symmetric A and B methods had the lowest THD of the grid current, 2.80%, and the efficiency remained at approximately 98.3%, making it the most suitable carrier-based method proposed in this paper. The space vector PWM (SVPWM) modulation method was implemented to the DSP and generated the expected twelve gate signals.

Vulnerability Assessments for Power-Electronics-Based Smart Grids

Here, in this paper, a novel method is proposed to evaluate the cyber security of the power-electronics-based smart grids (PESG). The proposed method considers the performance and stability of both the individual inverter and the grid. To our knowledge, this is a first attempt to evaluate the performance and stability of PESG due to cyber attacks. We first develop impedance-based modeling and cyber-attack modeling for PESG. Then we propose innovative two security criteria to evaluate the security of PESG, including stability-based and metrics-based. For metrics-based criteria, we propose to use both total harmonic distortion (THD) and space phasor model (SPM) to evaluate the inverter performance. The simulation results with a two-inverter-based power grid verify the validity and accuracy of the proposed security evaluation method. Results have shown that the performance and stability of PESG are significantly affected by cyber attacks, and thus there is indeed a need to further study cyber security issues of PESG.

On the Impact of High-Order Harmonic Generation in Electrical Distribution Systems

The modern power grid has seen a rise in the integration of non-linear loads, presenting a significant concern for operators. These loads introduce unwanted harmonics, leading to potential issues such as overheating and improper functioning of circuit breakers. In pursuing a more sustainable grid, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential networks has increased. Understanding and examining the effects of high-order harmonic frequencies beyond $1.5$ kHz is crucial to understanding their impact on the operation and planning of electrical distribution systems under varying nonlinear loading conditions. This study investigates a diverse set of critical power electronic loads within a household modeled using PSCAD/EMTdc, analyzing their unique harmonic spectra. This information is utilized to run the time-series harmonic analysis program in OpenDSS on a modified IEEE 34 bus test system model. The impact of high-order harmonics is quantified using metrics that evaluate total harmonic distortion (THD), transformer harmonic-driven eddy current loss component, and propagation of harmonics from the source to the substation transformer.
