Speed of Sound Measurements of Binary Mixtures of Hydrofluorocarbons [Pentafluoroethane (R-125), 1,1-Difluoroethane (R-152a), or 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane (R-227ea)] with Hydrofluoroolefins [2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (R-1234yf) or trans-1,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (R-1234ze(E))]

In this article, speed of sound data measured using a dual-path pulse-echo instrument are reported for three binary refrigerant mixtures, R-125/1234yf, R-1234yf/152a, and R-1234ze(E)/227ea, at compositions of (0.33/0.67) and (0.67/0.33) mole fraction. The speed of sound was studied at temperatures ranging from 230 K to 345 K from pressures slightly above the bubble point curve up to 20 MPa for the mixtures containing R-1234yf and 49 MPa for the R-1234ze(E)/227ea mixtures. The relative combined expanded speed of sound uncertainty ranged from 0.039 % to 0.317 % with a mean uncertainty over all state points of less than 0.10 %. The reported data are compared to the most recent mixture models in REFPROP for each blend studied. Comparisons of available mixture models for the R-125/1234yf and R-1234yf/152a blends exhibit average absolute deviation values ranging from 0.10 % to 0.27 %, and the average absolute deviations for R-1234ze(E)/227ea blends range from 0.62 % to 0.94 %. The comparisons show that only minor adjustments are required to the R-125/1234yf and R-1234yf/152a mixture models to represent the speed of sound data within its uncertainty. However, significant adjustments are needed to improve the current mixture models for the R-1234ze(E)/227ea blend. Deficiencies with the R-1234ze(E)/227ea mixture model are not unexpected since it (1) utilizes a pure-fluid EOS R-1234ze(E) that has been shown to inaccurately represent R-1234ze(E) speed of sound values and (2) uses binary interaction parameters for the chemically similar mixture of R-1234yf/227ea.

Computationally-driven discovery of second harmonic generation in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 through inversion symmetry breaking

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with superior properties are significant for advancing laser technologies and applications. Introducing rare earth metals to borates is a promising and effective way to modify the electronic structure of a crystal to improve its optical properties in the visible and ultraviolet range. In this work, we computationally discover inversion symmetry breaking in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 , which was previously identified as centric, and demonstrate noncentrosymmetry via synthesizing single crystals for the first time by the floating zone method. We determine the correct space group to be P 6¯. The material has a large direct bandgap of 5.56 eV and is transparent down to 250 nm. The complete anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties were also investigated with a d 11 of ∼0.52 pm/V for optical second harmonic generation. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase matchable. This work suggests that rare earth metal borates are an excellent crystal family for exploring future deep ultraviolet (DUV) NLO crystals. It also highlights how first principles computations combined with experiments can be used to identify noncentrosymmetric materials that have been wrongly assigned to be centrosymmetric.

Exploring Anomalous Photoelectron Angular Distributions in the Photoelectron Spectra of Gd 3 O 3 – : Study of Gd 3 O 2 – and Gd 3 O 3 – Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Anion photoelectron (PE) spectra of lanthanide oxide clusters obtained previously have exhibited anomalous photoelectron angular distributions which were attributed to strong PE–valence electron (PEVE) interactions. Here, to further explore this effect, we have obtained the PE spectra of Gd 3 O 2 – and Gd 3 O 3 – , two clusters that have similarly complex electronic structures but contrasting symmetries. The spectra exhibit manifolds of detachment transitions at similar binding energies in a 0.5 eV window of energy. The electron affinity of Gd 3 O 2 is measured to be 1.29 ± 0.05 eV, and that of Gd 3 O 3 is 1.31 ± 0.05 eV. As seen in previous studies on lanthanide oxide cluster anions in lower than conventional oxidation states, transitions in spectra obtained lower photon energies are more congested than those obtained with higher photon energy, a signature of strong PEVE interactions. While the detachment transitions have predominantly parallel photoelectron angular distributions (PAD), the PAD varies across the manifold of transitions in the PE spectrum of Gd 3 O 3 – in a way that suggests four different subgroups of transitions. Results of calculations on Gd 3 O 2 – suggest kite or V-shape structures with antiferromagnetic coupling between one of the 4f 7 subshells with the two others. Calculations on Gd 3 O 3 – more definitively point to ring structures with a nearly isoenergetic ferromagnetically coupled high spin (24-tet) state and a dectet state in which one of the 4f 7 subshells is antiferromagnetically coupled with the other two. Taking these results as qualitative, we propose that strong mixing between the unperturbed states predicted computationally leads to overlapping transitions with different PADs.

Copolyimides Prepared from 3,4'-Oxydianiline and 1,3-Bis(3-Aminophenoxy) Benzene with 3,3', 4,4'-Biphenylcarboxylic Dianhydride

Polyimide copolymers were prepared by reacting different ratios of 3,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and 1,3-bis(3- aminophenoxy)benzene (APB) with 3,3',4,4'- biphenylcarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and endcappfng with an effective amount of a non-reactive endcapper. Within a narrow ratio of diamines, from -50% ODA/50% APB to -95% ODA/5% APB, the copolyimides prepared with BPDA have a unique combination of properties that make them very attractive for various applications. This unique combination of properties includes low pressure processing (200 psi and below), long term melt stability (several hours at 390 C.), improved toughness, improved solvent resistance, improved adhesive properties, and improved composite mechanical properties.

Differential Cross Sections for the Electron Impact Excitation of the A(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup +), B(sup 3)Pi(sub g), W(sup 3)(Delta)(sub u), B'(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup -), a'(sup 1)Sigma(sub u)(sup -), a(sup 1)Pi(sub g), w(sup 1)Delta(sub u), and C(sup 3)Pi(sub u) States of N(sub 2)

Measurements of differential cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of molecular nitrogen from the ground X(sup 1)(Sigma)(sub g)(sup +)(v''=0)level to the A(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup +)(v'), B(sup 3)Pi(sub g)(v'), W(sup 3)(Delta)(sub u)(v'),B'(sup 3)(Sigma)(sub u)(sup -)(v'), a(sup 1)(Pi)(sub g)(v'), w(sup 1)(Delta)(sub u)(v'), and C(sup 3)(Pi)(sub u)(v') levels are presented. The data are obtained at the incident energies of 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV over the angular range of 5(deg)-130(deg) in 5(deg) intervals. The individual electronic state excitation differential cross sections are obtained by unfolding electron energy-loss spectra of molecular nitrogen using available semiempirical Frank-Condon factors. The data are compared to previous measurements and to available theory. We also make several important suggestions regarding future work that, like the present, relies on the unfolding of electron energy-loss spectra for obtaining differential cross sections.

Integral cross sections for electron impact excitation out of the ground state (X 1(sigma)g +) to the A 3(sigma)u +, B 3(pi)g, W 3(delta)u, B' 3(sigma)u -, a' 1(sigma)u -, a 1(pi)g, w 1(delta)u, and states in N2 are reported at incident energies ranging between 10 and 100 eV. These data have been derived by integrating differential cross sections previously reported by this group. New differential cross section measurements for the a 1(pi)g state at 200 eV are also presented to extend the range of the reported integral cross sections for this state, which is responsible for the emissions of the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield band system (a 1(pi)g (rightwards arrow) X 1(sigma)g +). The present results are compared and critically evaluated against existing cross sec In general, the present cross sections are smaller than previous results at low impact energies from threshold through the excitation function peak regions. These lower cross sections have potentially significant implications on our understanding of UV emissions in the atmospheres of Earth and Titan.

On the Effects of Aliovalent Substitutions in Thermoelectric Zintl Pnictides. Varied Polyanionic Dimensionality and Complex Structural Transformations–The Case of Sr 3 ZnP 3 vs Sr 3 Al x Zn 1– x P 3

The structures and the transport properties of a novel family of Zintl phosphides and arsenides with the formula AE 3 ZnPn 3 and the solid solutions AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 , AE 3 ZnAs y P 1–y (AE = Sr, Eu; Pn = P, As) are reported. Crystals of nine new phases have been obtained via Pb-flux reactions and used for structural work by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The derived orthorhombic structure is without a direct analog, and features unusual structural units, where the Zn atoms are in both distorted tetrahedral and trigonal-planar coordination of pnictogens. Electronic structure calculations reveal moderately wide bandgaps for Sr 3 ZnP 3 and Sr 3 ZnAs 3 , on the order of 0.70 and 0.63 eV, respectively. Electrical transport measurements above room temperature indicate relatively high resistivity values above 500 K (ρ ≈ 4.8 Ω cm and above), but some of the samples exhibit very high Seebeck coefficients, as large as 300 μV/K at 560 K for Sr 3 ZnAs 3 . Aliovalent substitutions in AE 3 ZnPn 3 , achieved by the partial replacement of Zn 2+ with Al 3+ cations promote occupational and positional disorder, which causes structural transformation towards the disordered variant of the Sr 5 Al 2 Sb 6 structure type. Such substitutions also change the dimensionality of the polyanionic sub-lattice in the resulting quaternary AE 3 Al x Zn 1–x Pn 3 phases. Furthermore, preliminary transport property data on the latter reveal nine times lower electrical resistivity (ρ 500 ≈ 0.5 Ω cm) together with a significantly enhanced Seebeck coefficient, αmax ≈ 430 μV/K at 560 K.

Local structure, bonding, and asymmetry of $\mathrm{((NH_2)_2CH)PbBr_3}$, $\mathrm{CsPbBr_3}$, and $\mathrm{(CH_3MH_3)PbBr_3}$

Here we report local structure measurements for CsPbBr 3 and ((NH 2 ) 2 CH)PbBr 3 (FAPbBr 3 ) and compare them with recent results for (CH 3 NH 3 )PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3 ). The Pb-Br bonding is similar for all three systems; the effective spring constants, κ, are comparable (ranging from 1.20 to 1.95 eV/Å 2 ), but small in magnitude indicating very soft materials. However, there are also important differences between the three systems. Static disorder is very small for CsPbBr3 but increases somewhat with the size of the organic molecular ions MA + and FA + . At room temperature, dynamic disorder dominates in all compounds. The thermal disorder of the Pb-Br pair distribution function (PDF), i.e., the Debye-Waller factor σ 2 follows a correlated Debye or Einstein model up to 300 K in CsPbBr 3 (orthorhombic phase), but for FAPbBr 3 and MAPbBr 3 , there is a break in the σ 2 (T) curve at the orthorhombic-tetragonal transition (o-t) near 150 K, indicating a small change in the spring constant κ. κ increases for MAPbBr 3 but decreases in FAPbBr 3 at this transition. These changes are attributed to changes in the H-bonding between Br - and MA + or FA + at this transition, as a result of librations or rotations of these molecular cations. In addition, the Pb-Br PDF becomes asymmetric at a relatively low temperature for FAPbBr 3 and MAPbBr 3 , while this effect is significantly smaller for CsPbBr 3 . Finally, we address the question of a model to explain the asymmetric PDF. Two main models are discussed in the literature, an anharmonic pair potential and a split-pair distribution, possibly driven by the presence of a lone pair on the Pb ion. We show that the fourth cumulant C 4 can differentiate between these two models and other possible models. Experimentally C 4 is positive at 250 K and above, for all three systems and that is inconsistent with a split-peak model, for which C 4 is negative for splittings larger than 0.12 Å.

The nature of dynamic local order in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 and CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3

Hybrid organic-inorganic lead-halide perovskites (LHPs) are a class of semiconductors with remarkable properties relevant to optoelectronic applications. The structure-property-function relationship in LHPs, however, is poorly understood, leading to incomplete descriptions of optoelectronic properties and a persistent problem of device degradation due to ion migration. Here, we reveal the true structure to contain an assembly of dynamic, two-dimensional short-range structural correlations in the lead-halide octahedral sublattice, with additional correlations between organic molecules. Here, we propose that these correlations are the origin of large-amplitude halide displacements, which govern charge carrier mobility and the sharpness of the absorption edge. Correlations between organic molecules may introduce regions of transient ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity, which increase charge carrier lifetime. Finally, the correlations introduce an ion diffusion barrier that is static on the timescale of diffusive jumps.

Ironing out the transition metal contribution to the magnetism of the n = 3 members of the homologous series Pr n +1 M n Ge 3 n +1 (M = Fe, Co): Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 vs. Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10

The Ln n+1 M n X 3n+1 (Ln = lanthanide, M = transition metal, and X = tetrel) homologous series provides a platform to study collective phenomena in quantum materials. Here, in this work, we compare the crystal growth, structure, and magnetic properties of the n = 3 members of the Pr n+1 M n Ge 3n+1 (M = Fe, Co) analogues, Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 (a = 4.3207 (10) Å, b = 35.523 (8) Å, c = 4.2982 (15) Å, and V = 659.7 (3) Å 3 ) and Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 (a = 4.3091 (12) Å, b = 35.750 (9) Å, c = 4.2807 (11) Å, and V = 659.4 (3) Å 3 ). We determined that the ideal flux growth conditions for each compound are highly dependent on the concentration of Sn flux and quench temperature. Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 orders ferromagnetically at 10 K along the c-direction while Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 orders antiferromagnetically at 16 K along the b-direction. For both compounds, we observed a magnetic moment higher than that expected for only Pr 3+ ions (3.58 µ B /Pr), implying that the transition metal ions contribute to magnetic ordering (3.91, 3.48, and 3.69 µ B /Pr for Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 , and 3.76, 4.04, and 3.83 µ B /Pr for Pr 4 Co 3 Ge 10 measured along the a-, b-, and c-directions, respectively). Moreover, the zero-field Mössbauer spectrum obtained at 4.2 K for Pr 4 Fe 3 Ge 10 demonstrates that the iron sites participate in magnetic ordering.

A combined experimental and computational study on the reaction dynamics of the 1-propynyl (CH 3 CC, X 2 A 1 ) – propylene (CH 3 CHCH 2 , X 1 A') system: formation of 1,3-dimethylvinylacetylene (CH 3 CCCHCHCH 3 , X 1 A') under single collision conditions

The reaction of the 1-propynyl radical (CH 3 CC; X 2 A 1 ) with propylene (CH 3 CHCH 2 ; X 1 A') was studied in a crossed molecular beam machine at a collision energy of 37 ± 1 kJ mol –1 . Experimental data combined with high-level electronic structure (CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12//ωB97X-D/6-311G(d,p)) and RRKM calculations reveal the reaction mechanism. Here, the overall barrierless and exoergic reaction involves indirect reaction dynamics and commences preferentially with addition of 1-propynyl with its radical centre to the carbon–carbon double bond at the terminal carbon atom of propylene. This work focuses on molecular mass growth process (hydrogen loss channels) although theory suggests methyl loss as a prevalent channel. In these processes, the C6H9 collision complexes either emit atomic hydrogen or undergo isomerisation followed by atomic hydrogen loss to preferentially yield the cis/trans isomers of 1,3-dimethylvinylacetylene (2-hexen-4-yne) as the primary product. Analysis of reaction dynamics of 1-propynyl and ethynyl radicals with propylene along with their fractional abundance in deep space suggests formation of methyl- and dimethyl derivatives of vinylacetylene in cold molecular clouds. Once formed they may engage in fundamental molecular mass growth processes via the barrierless Hydrogen Abstraction Vinylacetylene Addition mechanism that leads to the formation of methyl- and dimethylnaphthalenes thus providing a versatile route to methyl-substituted PAHs in interstellar medium.

Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and Pr(thd) 3 as Volatile Carriers for Actinium-225. Deposition of Actinium-Doped Praseodymium Boride Thin Films for Potential Use in Brachytherapy

Here we show that the praseodymium N,N-dimethylaminodiboranate complex Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dionate complex Pr(thd) 3 can serve as volatile carriers for 225 Ac. The actinium coordination complexes Ac(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 and Ac(thd) 3 are the likely species subliming with the carrier material. A sample of 225 Ac-doped Pr(H 3 BNMe 2 BH 3 ) 3 was used to deposit amorphous 225 Ac-doped praseodymium boride films on glass and Si(100) at 300 °C. Furthermore, the α emission spectra of the refractory films are well-resolved, suggesting that they could be used as radioactive implants for brachytherapy and related treatments.

Insulating band gaps both below and above the Néel temperature in d -electron LaTi O 3 , LaV O 3 , SrMn O 3 , and LaMn O 3 perovskites as a symmetry-breaking event

Metal d-electron oxides having an odd number of electrons per cell should exhibit band degeneracy at the Fermi energy, making them, in band theory, formally metallic. In many cases, however, these are “false metals”, as evidenced by the observation that many ABO 3 oxide perovskites with a magnetic 3d B-atom are observed to be insulators both below and above the Néel temperature. These inconsistencies between experimental observation and expectation have historically been resolved by invoking degeneracy-breaking physics, based largely on -pure electron effects, such as strong interelectronic correlation for d-electron compounds (the Mott mechanism). Such explanations generally consider microscopic lattice or magnetic degrees of freedom (m-DOF) as largely passive spectators, not a cause of the formally metallic being an insulator. Yet, it has long been known that ABO 3 perovskites can manifest an arrangement of m-DOFs in the form of octahedral tilting, bond dimerization, Jahn-Teller distortions, and ordering of local magnetic moments. It appears reasonable that such structural and magnetic local degrees of freedom need to be allowed to compete with purely electronic strong correlation. To answer this question, we explored a range of d-electron oxide perovskites exemplified by the archetypes LaTiO 3 , LaVO 3 , SrMnO 3 , and LaMnO 3 with 1, 2, 3, or 4 d -electrons, respectively. Using a mean-field-like electronic structure method (here, density functional theory), we find that a combination of magnetic symmetry breaking with structural distortions can account for insulating band gaps in this series while at the same time correctly predicting for the control case an intrinsic paramagnetic metal in SrVO 3 as symmetry-breaking is insufficiently strong to remove the degeneracy. Finally, this indicates that calculating quantitatively local magnetic and positional symmetry-breaking motifs in unit cells that avoid averaging at the outset over the low symmetry motifs can provide consistent trends in a Mott transition without Mott U.

Iodine Close Packing in Hybrid Halide Bismuth(III) and Antimony(III) Semiconductors: (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10

Simple features in complex hybrid inorganic–organic crystalline materials provide opportunities for targeted discovery of materials with desired optoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the structure and optoelectronic properties of isostructural (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10 . The crystal structures are characterized by corner-connected metal-iodide octahedral chains that form a cubic close-packed iodine inorganic framework. Variable temperature UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals stark contrasts in the onset of absorption and color changes between the [MX6]3– based structures, due to differences in the interaction of the (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2+ organic ammonium cation and the iodine packing of the inorganic framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal flat bands reflective of the pseudo-1D crystal structure. Dark microwave conductivity (DMC) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) reveal an excitonic character with long carrier lifetimes, consistent with the electronically confined octahedral chains. Comparison of the structural features with those of other diammonium-containing crystals reveals that diammoniumheptane can substitute into structures, displacing inorganic octahedra while retaining a close-packed anion framework. This provides a means for targeting new hybrid materials in which “vacancy-ordering” provides a crystal chemical approach for targeting desirable optoelectronic properties.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

Reverse Polarizability of Rare Earth Ions (La 3+ , Gd 3+ , Lu 3+ , Y 3+ ) in Tellurite Glasses and Glass Ceramics for Optical Limiting

All-optical modulation using inherent third-order optical nonlinearity of a medium has garnered considerable interest in photonics and optoelectronics. Herein, nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of tellurite glasses and glass ceramics (GCs) containing four different rare earths (RE = La, Gd, Lu, and Y) have been deliberated in near-infrared regions under an ultrafast regime. The La-based glass exhibits ~10 times higher nonlinear refraction (n 2 ) and absorption (α 2 ) than reported NLO materials. The NLO susceptibility [χ (3) ] trend in the studied glasses is La > Gd > Lu > Y, matching with RE 3+ polarizability. Furthermore, Ln 2 Te 6 O 15 nanocrystallite-embedded transparent GCs exhibit a larger NLO coefficient due to the enhanced local field from oxygen vacancies in crystallites. Interestingly, the trend of χ (3) in GCs follows the sequence of Y > Lu > Gd > La, precisely opposite to the glasses. This observation challenges the general polarizability approach of RE 3+ ions, emphasizing that quadratic hyperpolarizability of RE 3+ is pivotal for NLO properties of GCs. Among the studied matrices, Y-containing GCs showed the lowest optical limiting (OL) threshold (5.4 mJ/cm 2 at 800 nm), much lower than those of the reported NLO materials, suggesting its potential as a femtosecond NIR-laser safety material. A combination of large α 2 and n 2 from the studied matrices indicates their advantage for harmonic generation, potentially aiding in the design of ultrafast signal processing devices.
