Exact results in softly broken supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with flavor

We present exact results in softly broken supersymmetric SU⁡(𝑁 𝐶 ) chiral gauge theories with charged fermions in one antisymmetric, 𝑁 𝐹 fundamental, and 𝑁 𝐶 + 𝑁 𝐹 − 4 antifundamental representations. We achieve this by considering the supersymmetric version of these theories and utilizing anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking at a scale 𝑚 ≪ Λ to generate a vacuum. The connection to nonsupersymmetric theories is then conjectured in the limit 𝑚 → ∞. For odd 𝑁 𝐶 , we determine the massless fermions and unbroken global symmetries in the infrared. For even 𝑁 𝐶 , we find global symmetries are nonanomalous and no massless fermions. In all cases, the symmetry breaking patterns differ from what the tumbling hypothesis would suggest.

Lattice field theory beyond the standard model

We conducted theoretical studies in high energy physics beyond the standard model, using lattice gauge theory techniques, with a particular emphasis on supersymmetric fields theories. There are many reasons for formulating and studying such theories using this first principles approach, with the goal in mind of repeating the successes of lattice quantum chromodynamics—which are quite substantial.

Near-SUSY to non-SUSY crossover

Gauge theories can be solved exactly slightly away from the supersymmetric (SUSY) limit softly broken by anomaly mediation when the size of SUSY breaking is much smaller than the dynamical scale (𝑚 ≪ Λ). We show empirical evidence that the near-SUSY limit is continuously connected to the non-SUSY limit (𝑚 ≫ Λ) in SU⁡(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theories with 𝑁 𝑓 quarks in the fundamental representation. The evidence includes the behavior of quark bilinear condensate and gluon condensates, light hadron spectra, and consistency with the large 𝑁 𝑐 limit including the Witten-Veneziano relations between the topological susceptibility and 𝑚 𝜂′ and 𝑚 𝜋 . In addition, we present new predictions when 𝑁 𝑓 /𝑁 𝑐 ≳ 𝑂⁡(1).

Metric isometries, holography, and continuous symmetry operators

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, a topological symmetry operator of the boundary conformal field theory (CFT) is dual to a dynamical brane in the gravitational bulk. Said differently, this predicts a dynamical brane for every global symmetry of the boundary CFT. We analyze this correspondence for continuous symmetries which arise from a consistent truncation of isometries on the “internal” factor 𝑋 of AdS × 𝑋. In the extra-dimensional geometry, these branes are associated with various metric singularities and do not arise from wrapped D-branes. Boosts relate configurations interpreted as topological symmetry operators and heavy defects in the CFT. From the perspective of the AdS factor, with gravity and bulk gauge fields, these are codimension-2 Gukov-Witten-like vortex configurations which are the gravity duals of 0-form symmetry operators. These effective branes come with an asymptotic tension and size which is also fully fixed by bulk dynamics. We use this higher-dimensional perspective to determine properties of the worldvolume theory for these branes. We also discuss how these considerations generalize to more general quantum field theories engineered via string theory which need not possess a semiclassical gravity dual.

On the holographic dual of a symmetry operator at finite temperature

Topological symmetry operators of holographic large 𝑁 CFT 𝐷 ’s are dual to dynamical branes in the gravity dual AdS 𝐷+1 . We use this correspondence to establish a dictionary between thermal expectation values of symmetry operators in the Euclidean CFT 𝐷 and the evaluation of gravitational saddles in the presence of a dynamical brane. Expectation values of 0-form symmetry operators in the CFT 𝐷 are then related to branes wrapped on volume minimizing cycles in the bulk, i.e., the Euclidean continuation of a black hole horizon. We illustrate with some representative examples, including gravity in AdS 3 , duality/triality defects in four-dimensional 𝒩 = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, and the dual of R-symmetry operators probing five-dimensional Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield black holes.

Machine learning BPS spectra and the gap conjecture

We explore statistical properties of Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield q-series for strongly coupled supersymmetric theories that correspond to a particular family of three-manifolds. We discover that gaps between exponents in the -series are statistically more significant at the beginning of the -series compared to gaps that appear in higher powers of. Our observations are obtained by calculating saliencies of -series features used as input data for principal component analysis, which is a standard example of an explainable machine learning technique that allows for a direct calculation and a better analysis of feature saliencies.

Supersymmetric lattice theories on curved space

We show how to construct Hamiltonian lattice theories with one exact supersymmetry on arbitrary triangulations of curved space in any number of dimensions. Both bosons and fermions satisfy discrete Kähler-Dirac equations. The quantization of the fermions proceeds by imposing conventional anticommutation relations while the bosons require a modification of the usual canonical commutator. On regular lattices we construct parity, time reversal and translation-by-one (shift) symmetries. We argue that the latter are generically noninvertible symmetries. We also show how to couple these degrees of freedom to background gauge fields which leads to a theory with enhanced supersymmetry.

Superselection rules, quantum error correction, and quantum chromodynamics

We investigate the relationship between superselection rules and quantum error correcting codes. We demonstrate that the existence of a superselection rule implies the Knill-Laflamme condition in quantum error correction. As an example, we examine the code built from quantum chromodynamics, where the proton and neutron states in the model are explored as different superselection sectors that protect logical information. Finally we comment on topological quantum error correcting codes and supersymmetric quantum field theory within this framework.

Commuting Line Defects At $q^N$ = 1

Here, we explain the physical origin of a curious property of algebras $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$ which encode the rotation-equivariant fusion ring of half-BPS line defects in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric quantum field theories. These algebras are a quantization of the algebras of holomorphic functions on the three-dimensional Coulomb branch of the SQFTs, with deformation parameter log $\mathfrak{q}$. They are known to acquire a large center, canonically isomorphic to the undeformed algebra, whenever $\mathfrak{q}$ is a root of unity. We give a physical explanation of this fact. We also generalize the construction to characterize the action of this center in the $\mathcal{A}_{\mathfrak{q}}$-modules associated to three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 boundary conditions. Finally, we use dualities to relate this construction to a construction in the Kapustin–Witten twist of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauge theory. These considerations give simple physical explanations of certain properties of quantized skein algebras and cluster varieties, and quantum groups, when the deformation parameter is a root of unity.

Lie-algebraic Kähler sigma models with U(1) isotropy

We discuss various questions that emerge in connection with the Lie-algebraic deformation of the sigma model in two dimensions. First, we supersymmetrize the original model endowing it with the minimal and extended supersymmetries. Then we derive the general hypercurrent anomaly in both cases. In the latter case this anomaly is one-loop but is somewhat different from the standard expressions one can find in the literature because the target manifold is nonsymmetric. We also show how to introduce the twisted masses and the term, and study the Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield equation for instantons, in particular the value of the topological charge. Then we demonstrate that the second loop in the function of the nonsupersymmetric Lie-algebraic sigma model is due to an infrared effect. To this end we use a supersymmetric regularization. We also conjecture that the above statement is valid for higher loops too, similar to the parallel phenomenon in four-dimensional super-Yang-Mills. In the second part of the paper we develop a special dimensional reduction—namely, starting from the two-dimensional Lie-algebraic model we arrive at a quasi-exactly solvable quantum-mechanical problem of the Lamé type.

The superconformal index and black hole instabilities

The superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N) has provided powerful insights into the entropy of supersymmetric black holes in AdS 5 × S 5 , including some sub-leading logarithmic and non-perturbative corrections. Recently, the phase space of supersymmetric solutions has been argued to contain configurations other than the asymptotically AdS 5 black hole. Such configurations include the so-called grey galaxies where the black hole at the center is surrounded by a gas of gravitons. By numerically evaluating the superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills at small values of N, we detect systematic deviations from the entropy of black holes with two distinct angular momenta. We find that the giant graviton expansion of the index is a numerically efficient way of evaluating the index that complements the direct character evaluation and allows for explicit access to N ≤ 15 with up to two giant gravitons in the expansion. We find it remarkable that a supersymmetric quantity in field theory, usually thought of as a rigid counting observable, indeed contains information about different phases in the space of supersymmetric solutions on the gravity side.

Corners and islands in the S-matrix bootstrap of the open superstring

We bootstrap the Veneziano superstring amplitude in 10 dimensions from the bottom-up. Starting with the most general maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills EFT, we input information about the lowest-lying massive states, which we assume contribute via tree-level exchanges to the 4-point amplitude. We show the following: (1) if there is only a single state at the lowest mass, it must be a scalar. (2) Assuming a string-inspired gap between the mass of this scalar and any other massive states, the allowed region of Wilson coefficients has a new sharp corner where the Veneziano amplitude is located. (3) Upon fixing the next massive state to be a vector, the EFT bounds have a one-parameter family of corners; these would correspond to models with linear Regge trajectories of varying slopes, one of which is the open superstring. (4) When the ratio between the massive scalar coupling and the tr F 4 coefficient is fixed to its string value, the spin and mass of the second massive state is determined by the bootstrap and the Veneziano amplitude is isolated on a small island in parameter space. Finally, we compare with other recent bootstraps approaches, both the pion model and imposing Regge-inspired maximal spin constraints.

Remarks on geometric engineering, symmetry TFTs and anomalies

Abstract Geometric engineering is a collection of tools developed to establish dictionaries between local singularities in string theory and (supersymmetric) quantum fields. Extended operators and defects, as well as their higher quantum numbers captured by topological symmetries, can be encoded within geometric engineering dictionaries. In this paper we revisit and clarify aspects of these techniques, with special emphasis on ’t Hooft anomalies, interpreted from the SymTFT perspective as obstructions to the existence of Neumann boundary conditions. These obstructions to gauging higher symmetries are captured via higher link correlators for the SymTFT on spheres. In this work, we give the geometric engineering counterpart of this construction in terms of higher links of topological membranes. We provide a consistency check in the context of 5D SCFTs with anomalous 1-form symmetries, where we give two independent derivations of the anomaly in terms of higher links, one purely field theoretical and the other purely geometrical. Along the way, we also recover the construction of non-invertible duality defects in 4D$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM from a geometric engineering perspective.

Generalized symmetry constraints on deformed 4D SCFTs

We explore the consequence of generalized symmetries in four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories. First, we classify all possible supersymmetric gauge theories with a simple gauge group that have a nontrivial one-form symmetry and flows to a superconformal field theory. Upon identifying unbroken discrete zero-form symmetries from the Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly, we find that many of these theories have mixed zero-form or one-form ’t Hooft anomalies. Then we classify the relevant deformations of these SCFTs that preserve the anomaly. From this mixed anomaly together with the anomalies of the discrete zero-form symmetries, we find obstructions for the relevant deformations of these SCFTs to flow to a trivially gapped phase. We also study non-Lagrangian SCFTs formed by gauging copies of Argyres-Douglas theories and constrain their deformations. In particular, we explore a new duality between the diagonal gauging of two D 3 ( S U ( N ) ) theories and S U ( N ) gauge theory with two adjoints. We also repeat our analysis for a host of nonsupersymmetric gauge theories having nontrivial one-form symmetry including examples that appear to flow to Bank-Zaks type CFTs. Degenerate domain walls in supersymmetric theories

In supersymmetric Yang–Mills theories tension-degenerate domain walls are typical. Adding matter fields in fundamental representation, we arrive at supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD) supporting similar walls. We demonstrate that the degenerate domain walls can belong to one of two classes: i) locally distinguishable, i.e. those which differ from each other locally (which could be detected in local measurements); and ii) those which have identical local structure and are differentiated only topologically, through a judicially chosen compactification of R 4 . Depending on the number of flavors F and the pattern of Higgsing, both classes can coexist among SQCD k walls interpolating between the vacua n and n + k . We prove that the overall multiplicity of the domain walls obtained after accounting for both classes is ν N , k walls = N ! / [ ( N − k ) ! k ! ] , as was discovered previously in limiting cases. (Here, N is the number of colors.) Thus, ν N , k walls is a peculiar index. For the locally distinguishable degenerate domain walls, we observe two-wall junctions, a phenomenon specific for supersymmetry with central extensions. This phenomenon does not exist for topological replicas.

Landau singularities of the 7-point ziggurat. Part I

We compute the leading (first-type Landau) singularities of a certain four-loop 7-point graph that is related to the 7-point “ziggurat” graph by the graphical moves familiar from equivalent circuit theory. We find perfect agreement with a subset of the “heptagon symbol alphabet” that has appeared in the context of planar Ν = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory. The remaining heptagon symbol letters are found in its subleading Landau singularities, which we address in a companion paper.

Supercurrents and (partial) supersymmetry in adjoint QCD 2 and its generalizations

1 + 1-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion, also known as adjoint QCD 2 , has the surprising feature that at fermion mass $\sqrt{\frac{g^2N}{2\pi }}$ it exhibits supersymmetry. In this paper, we obtain a deeper insight into how the supersymmetry works by constructing the gauge invariant, Lorentz covariant supercurrent j μA . Its conservation relies crucially on the presence of a quantum anomaly. We generalize this construction to a class of models where, in addition to an adjoint Majorana fermion of an appropriate mass, the gauge theory is coupled to some collection of massless fermions (SU(N) may be replaced by a more general gauge group). In general, these models have a supersymmetric massive sector and a non-supersymmetric CFT sector [1], but there are cases in which both sectors are supersymmetric. An example of such a gapless, fully supersymmetric model is SU(N) gauge theory coupled to three adjoint Majorana fermions, of which two are massless and the third has mass $\sqrt{\frac{3{g}^2N}{2\pi }}$.

The three-point form factor of Tr ϕ 3 to six loops

We study the three-point form factor of the length-three half-BPS operator (Tr ϕ 3 ) in planar $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Super-Yang-Mills theory, using analyticity and integrability methods. We find that the functions describing the form factor in perturbation theory live in the same restrictive space of multiple polylogarithms as the one describing the form factor of the stress-tensor operator (Tr ϕ 2 ). Furthermore, we find that the leading-order data in the collinear limit provided by the form factor operator product expansion (FFOPE) is enough to fix the form factor uniquely, at least through six loops. We perform various tests of our results using the subleading FFOPE corrections. We also analyze the form factor in the Regge limit where two Mandelstam invariants are large; we obtain a compact representation for the form factor in this limit which is valid to all orders in the coupling.
