Multicomponent superconducting order parameter in UTe 2

An unconventional superconducting state was recently discovered in uranium ditelluride (UTe 2 ), in which spin-triplet superconductivity emerges from the paramagnetic normal state of a heavy-fermion material. The coexistence of magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity, together with the crystal structure of this material, suggests that a distinctive set of symmetries, magnetic properties, and topology underlie the superconducting state. Here, we report observations of a nonzero polar Kerr effect and of two transitions in the specific heat upon entering the superconducting state, which together suggest that the superconductivity in UTe 2 is characterized by a two-component order parameter that breaks time-reversal symmetry. These data place constraints on the symmetries of the order parameter and inform the discussion on the presence of topological superconductivity in UTe 2 .

Thermodynamic evidence for a two-component superconducting order parameter in Sr 2 RuO 4

Sr 2 RuO 4 has stood as the leading candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor for 26 years. However, recent NMR experiments have cast doubt on this candidacy and it is difficult to find a theory of superconductivity that is consistent with all experiments. Here, the order parameter symmetry for this material therefore remains an open question. Symmetry-based experiments are needed that can rule out broad classes of possible superconducting order parameters. Here, we use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to measure the entire symmetry-resolved elastic tensor of Sr 2 RuO 4 through the superconducting transition. We observe a thermodynamic discontinuity in the shear elastic modulus c 66 , which implies that the superconducting order parameter has two components. A two-component p-wave order parameter, such as p x + ip y , naturally satisfies this requirement. As this order parameter appears to have been precluded by recent NMR experiments, we suggest that two other two-component order parameters, namely {d xz ,d yz } and {d x 2 –y 2 ,g xy (x 2 –y 2 ) }, are now the prime candidates for the order parameter of Sr 2 RuO 4 .

Anisotropic field-induced changes in the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2

UTe 2 is a newly discovered unconventional superconductor, where electron Cooper pairs combine into a spin-triplet ground state. We study the specific heat C( H,T ) of a high-quality UTe 2 single crystal, with a single anomaly at a high superconducting transition temperature T c = 2.1 K and a low residual Sommerfeld coefficient γ 0 . Applying magnetic fields up to 12 T along the crystallographic axes a, b , and c , we observe highly anisotropic behavior in γ 0 ( H ). Below 4 T, γ 0 ( H ) ≈ γ 0 + λi √H (i = a, b, c) , which is expected for an unconventional superconductor with nodes on the Fermi surface away from the direction of the magnetic field. At 4 T ( a and b axes) and 5.5 T ( c axis), distinctive changes in the behavior of γ 0 (H) suggest that a stable low-field ground state begins to evolve above 4 T. The data analysis indicates that the nodes are located near the a–b plane, with possible order parameters d B2u + iεd B1u or d B2u + iεd Au . Our findings support B 2u as the primary superconducting order parameter in UTe 2 .

Evidence for a robust sign-changing s-wave order parameter in monolayer films of superconducting Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3

The Fe-based superconductor Fe (Se,Te) combines non-trivial topology with unconventional superconductivity and may be an ideal platform to realize exotic states such as high-order topological corner modes and Majorana modes. Thin films of Fe (Se,Te) are particularly important for device fabrication and phase sensitive transport measurements. While bulk Fe (Se,Te) has been extensively studied, the nature of the superconducting order parameter in the monolayer limit has not yet been explored. In this work, we study monolayer films of Fe (Se,Te) on Bi 2 Te 3 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructures host a multigap superconducting state that strongly resembles the bulk. Analysis of the phase-referenced quasiparticle interference signal reveals a sign-changing s-wave order parameter similar to the bulk as well as a unique pattern of sign changes which have not been observed in the bulk. Our work establishes monolayer Fe (Se,Te)/Bi 2 Te 3 as a robust multi-band unconventional superconductor and sets the stage for explorations of non-trivial topology in this highly-tunable system.

Role of electromagnetic gauge-field fluctuations in the selection between chiral and nematic superconductivity

Motivated by the observation of nematic superconductivity in several systems, we revisit the problem of the leading pairing instability of two-component unconventional superconductors on the triangular lattice—such as (p x , p y )-wave and (d x 2 –y 2 , d xy )-wave superconductors. Such a system has two possible superconducting states: the chiral state (e.g., p + ip or d + id), which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and the nematic state (e.g., p + p or d + d), which breaks the threefold rotational symmetry of the lattice. Weak-coupling calculations generally favor the chiral over the nematic superconducting state, raising the question of what mechanism can stabilize the latter. Here, we show that the electromagnetic field fluctuations can play a crucial role in selecting between these two states. Specifically, we derive and analyze the effective free energy for the two-component superconducting order parameter after integrating out the gauge-field fluctuations, which is formally justified if the spatial order parameter fluctuations can be neglected. A nonanalytic cubic term arises, as in the case of a conventional s -wave superconductor. However, unlike the latter, the cubic term depends on the relative phase and on the relative amplitudes between the two order parameter components, in such a way that it generally favors the nematic state. This result is a direct consequence of the fact that the stiffness of the superconducting order parameter is not isotropic. Competition with the quartic term, which favors the chiral state, leads to a renormalized phase diagram in which the nematic state displaces the chiral state over a wide region in the parameter space. Here, we analyze the stability of the fluctuation-induced nematic phase, generalize our results to tetragonal lattices, and discuss their applicability to candidate nematic superconductors, including twisted bilayer graphene.

Thermodynamic and electrical transport properties of UTe 2 under uniaxial stress

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 remains elusive. This puzzle stems from reports of either a single or a double superconducting transition at ambient pressure as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To address this issue, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of UTe 2 under compressive uniaxial stress σ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature T c of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with σ along [100] and [110] but increases with σ along [001]. Aside from its effect on T c , c-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity. Importantly, an in-plane shear stress σ xy does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of σ xy ≈ 0.17GPa. Furthermore, this result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2 may be single component at ambient pressure.

Distinguishing finite-momentum superconducting pairing states with two-electron photoemission spectroscopy

Here, we show theoretically that double photoemission (2e-ARPES) may be used to identify the pairing state in superconductors in which the Cooper pairs have a nonzero center-of-mass momentum, q cm . We theoretically evaluate the 2e-ARPES counting rate P (2) for the cases of a d x 2 -y 2 -wave superconductor, a pair-density-wave (PDW) phase, and a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We show that P (2) provides direct insight into the center-of-mass momentum and spin state of the superconducting condensate, and thus can distinguish between these three different superconducting pairing states. In addition, P (2) can be used to map out the momentum dependence of the superconducting order parameter. Our results identify 2e-ARPES as an ideal tool for identifying and probing q cm ≠ 0 superconducting pairing states in superconductors.

Detection of a pair density wave state in UTe2

Abstract Spin-triplet topological superconductors should exhibit many unprecedented electronic properties, including fractionalized electronic states relevant to quantum information processing. Although UTe 2 may embody such bulk topological superconductivity 1–11 , its superconductive order parameter Δ( k ) remains unknown 12 . Many diverse forms for Δ( k ) are physically possible 12 in such heavy fermion materials 13 . Moreover, intertwined 14,15 density waves of spin (SDW), charge (CDW) and pair (PDW) may interpose, with the latter exhibiting spatially modulating 14,15 superconductive order parameter Δ( r ), electron-pair density 16–19 and pairing energy gap 17,20–23 . Hence, the newly discovered CDW state 24 in UTe 2 motivates the prospect that a PDW state may exist in this material 24,25 . To search for it, we visualize the pairing energy gap with μeV-scale energy resolution using superconductive scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) tips 26–31 . We detect three PDWs, each with peak-to-peak gap modulations of around 10 μeV and at incommensurate wavevectors P i =1,2,3 that are indistinguishable from the wavevectors Q i =1,2,3 of the prevenient 24 CDW. Concurrent visualization of the UTe 2 superconductive PDWs and the non-superconductive CDWs shows that every P i : Q i pair exhibits a relative spatial phase δϕ ≈ π. From these observations, and given UTe 2 as a spin-triplet superconductor 12 , this PDW state should be a spin-triplet PDW 24,25 . Although such states do exist 32 in superfluid 3 He, for superconductors, they are unprecedented.

Nature of the spin resonance mode in CeCoIn 5

Spin-fluctuation-mediated unconventional superconductivity can emerge at the border of magnetism, featuring a superconducting order parameter that changes sign in momentum space. Detection of such a sign-change is experimentally challenging, since most probes are not phase-sensitive. The observation of a spin resonance mode (SRM) from inelastic neutron scattering is often seen as strong phase-sensitive evidence for a sign-changing superconducting order parameter, by assuming the SRM is a spin-excitonic bound state. Here we show that for the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn 5 , its SRM defies expectations for a spin-excitonic bound state, and is not a manifestation of sign-changing superconductivity. Instead, the SRM in CeCoIn 5 likely arises from a reduction of damping to a magnon-like mode in the superconducting state, due to its proximity to magnetic quantum criticality. Our findings emphasize the need for more stringent tests of whether SRMs are spin-excitonic, when using their presence to evidence sign-changing superconductivity.

Pairing symmetry of twisted bilayer graphene: A phenomenological synthesis

One of the outstanding questions in the study of twisted bilayer graphene—from both experimental and theoretical points of view—is the nature of its superconducting phase. In this paper we perform a comprehensive synthesis of existing experiments, and argue that experimental constraints are strong enough to allow the structure of the superconducting order parameter to be nearly uniquely determined. In particular, we argue that the order parameter is nodal, and is formed from an admixture of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. This argument is made on phenomenological grounds, without committing to any particular microscopic model of the superconductor. Existing data is insufficient to determine the orbital parity of the order parameter, which could be either p wave or d wave. We propose a way in which the measurement of Andreev edge states can be used to distinguish between the two.

Twisted van der Waals Josephson Junction Based on a High-T c Superconductor

Stacking two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials rotated with respect to each other show versatility for studying exotic quantum phenomena. In particular, anisotropic layered materials have great potential for such twistronics applications, providing high tunability. In this work, we report anisotropic superconducting order parameters in twisted Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+x (Bi-2212) vdW junctions with an atomically clean vdW interface, achieved using the microcleave-and-stack technique. The vdW junctions with twist angles of 0° and 90° showed the maximum Josephson coupling, comparable to that of intrinsic Josephson junctions. As the twist angle approaches 45°, Josephson coupling is suppressed, and eventually disappears at 45°. The observed twist angle dependence of the Josephson coupling can be explained quantitatively by theoretical calculation with the d-wave superconducting order parameter of Bi-2212 and finite tunneling incoherence of the junction. Our results revealed the anisotropic nature of Bi-2212 and provided a novel fabrication technique for vdW-based twistronics platforms compatible with air-sensitive vdW materials.

Spatial BCS-BEC crossover in superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions

Here, we present a theory of superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions. To this end, we consider a two band model of doped bulk semiconductors with attractive interactions between the charge carriers and derive the superconducting order parameter, the quasiparticle density of states, and the chemical potential as a function of the semiconductor gap $Δ_0$ and the doping level ε. We verify previous results for the quantum phase diagram for a system with constant density of states in the conduction and valence band, which show BCS-superconductor to Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) and BEC-to-insulator transitions as a function of doping level and the size of the band gap. Then, we extend this formalism to a density of states which is more realistic for 3D systems and derive the corresponding quantum phase diagram, where we find that a BEC phase can only exist for small band gaps $Δ_0 < Δ ^{\ast}_0$. For larger band gaps, we find rather a direct transition from an insulator to a BCS phase. Next, we apply this theory to study the properties of superconducting $\textit{p–n}$ junctions. We derive the spatial variation of the superconducting order parameter along the $\textit{p–n}$ junction. As the potential difference across the junction leads to energy band bending, we find a spatial crossover between a BCS and BEC condensate, as the density of charge carriers changes across the $\textit{p–n}$ junction. For the two-dimensional system, we find two possible regimes, when the bulk is in a BCS phase, a BCS-BEC-BCS junction with a single BEC layer in the space charge region, and a BCS-BEC-I-BEC-BCS junction with two layers of BEC condensates separated by an insulating layer. In three dimensions we find that there can also be a conventional BCS-I-BCS junction for semiconductors with band gaps exceeding $Δ^{\ast}_0$. Thus, we find that there can be BEC layers in the well controlled setting of doped semiconductors, where the doping level can be varied to change and control the thickness of BEC and insulator layers, making Bose-Einstein condensates thereby possibly accessible to experimental transport and optical studies in solid-state materials.

Superconductor/Ferromagnet Heterostructures: A Platform for Superconducting Spintronics and Quantum Computation

The interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the superconductor/ferromagnet (SC/FM) heterostructures generates many interesting physical phenomena, including spin-triplet superconductivity, superconducting order parameter oscillation, and topological superconductivity. The unique physical properties make the SC/FM heterostructure as promising platforms for future superconducting spintronics and quantum computation applications. In this article, important research progress of SC/FM heterostructures from superconducting spintronics to quantum computation is reviewed, and it is organized as follows. First, the progress of spin current carriers in SC/FM heterostructures including Bogoliubov quasiparticles, superconducting vortex, and spin-triplet Cooper pairs which might be used for long-range spin transport is discussed. Then, the π Josephson junctions and their application for constructing π qubits are described. Finally, experimental signatures of Majorana states in the SC/FM heterostructures and the theoretically proposed manipulation are briefly reviewed, which could be useful to realize fault-tolerant topological quantum computing.

Superconducting gap symmetry from Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference analysis on Sr 2 RuO 4

Here, the nature of the superconducting order parameter in Sr 2 RuO 4 has generated intense interest in recent years. Since the superconducting gap is very small, high-resolution methods such as scanning tunneling spectroscopy might be the best chance to directly resolve the gap symmetry. Recently, a Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference imaging (BQPI) experiment has suggested that the d x 2 –y 2 gap symmetry is appropriate for Sr 2 RuO 4 . In this work, we use a material-specific theoretical approach based onWannier functions of the surface of Sr 2 RuO 4 to calculate the continuum density of states as detected in scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. We examine several different proposed gap order parameters and calculate the expected BQPI pattern for each case. Comparing to the available experimental data, our results suggest that a s' + id xy gap order parameter is the most probable state, but the measured BQPI patterns still display features unaccounted for by the theory for any of the states currently under discussion.

Strong increase in ultrasound attenuation below T c in Sr 2 RuO 4 : Possible evidence for domains

Recent experiments suggest that Sr 2 RuO 4 has a two-component superconducting order parameter (OP). A two-component OP has multiple degrees of freedom in the superconducting state that can result in low-energy collective modes or the formation of domain walls—a possibility that would explain a number of experimental observations including the smallness of the signature of time reversal symmetry breaking at T c and telegraph noise in critical current experiments. We use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to perform ultrasound attenuation measurements across the superconducting T c of Sr 2 RuO 4 . We find that compressional sound attenuation increases by a factor of 7 immediately below T c , in sharp contrast with what is found in both conventional (s-wave) and high-T c (d-wave) superconductors. Our observations are most consistent with the presence of domain walls that separate different configurations of the superconducting OP. Here, the fact that we only observe an increase in sound attenuation for compressional strains, and not for shear strains, suggests an inhomogeneous superconducting state formed of two distinct, accidentally degenerate superconducting OPs that are not related to each other by symmetry. Whatever the mechanism, a factor of 7 increase in sound attenuation is a singular characteristic that must be reconciled with any potential theory of superconductivity in Sr 2 RuO 4 .

Twisted cuprate van der Waals heterostructures with controlled Josephson coupling

Twisted van derWaals (vdW) heterostructures offer a unique platform for engineering the efficient Josephson coupling between cuprate thin crystals harboring the nodal superconducting order parameter. Preparing the vdW heterostructures-based Josephson junction comprising stacked cuprates requires maintaining an ordered interface with preserved surface superconductivity. Here, we report the preparation of the Josephson junction out of the stacked Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+d crystals using the cryogenic dry transfer technique and encapsulating the junction with an insulating layer, that protects the interface during the electrical contacts evaporation at the 1×10 -6 mbar base pressure. We find that the Josephson critical current $I$ c has a maximum at low twist angles, comparable to that of the bulk intrinsic Josephson junctions, and is reduced by two orders of magnitude at twist angles close to 45°. In conclusion, the reduction of $I$ c occurs due to a mismatch between superconducting $d$-wave order parameters, which suppresses the direct Cooper pair tunneling.
