Plastic Stress-strain Relations for 75S-T6 Aluminum Alloy Subjected to Biaxial Tensile Stresses

In this investigation, the material tested was a 75S-T6 aluminum alloy and the stresses were essentially biaxial and tensile. The biaxial tensile stresses were produced in a specially designed testing machine by subjecting a thin-walled tubular specimen to axial tension and internal pressure. Plastic stress-strain relations for various biaxial stress conditions were obtained using a clip-type SR-4 strain gage. Three types of tests were made: Constant-stress-ratio tests, variable-stress-ratio tests, and special tests. The constant-stress-ratio test results gave control data and showed the influence of biaxial stresses on the yield, fracture, and ultimate strength of the material. By means of the variable-stress-ratio tests, it is possible to determine whether there is any significant difference between the flow and deformation type of theory. Finally, special tests were conducted to check specific assumptions made in the theories of plastic flow. The constant-stress-ratio tests show that the deformation theory based on the octahedral, effective; or significant stress-strain relations is in approximate agreement with the test results. The variable-stress-ratio tests show that both the deformation and flow theory are in equally good agreement with the test results.

Contribution to the problem of buckling of orthotropic plates, with special reference to plywood

Planar stress-strain relations and bending stress-strain relations are presented for elastic orthotropic plates and specialized to plywood. These relations are used to derive the differential equation and energy expression for the buckling of orthotropic rectangular plates whose principal stiffness directions are not parallel to the plate edges. Buckling analyses are made for the case of pure compression and pure shear of a long plate-strip.

Plasticity Tool for Predicting Shear Nonlinearity of Unidirectional Laminates Under Multiaxial Loading

This study implements a plasticity tool to predict the nonlinear shear behavior of unidirectional composite laminates under multiaxial loadings, with an intent to further develop the tool for use in composite progressive damage analysis. The steps for developing the plasticity tool include establishing a general quadratic yield function, deriving the incremental elasto-plastic stress-strain relations using the yield function with associated flow rule, and integrating the elasto-plastic stress-strain relations with a modified Euler method and a substepping scheme. Micromechanics analyses are performed to obtain normal and shear stress-strain curves that are used in determining the plasticity parameters of the yield function. By analyzing a micromechanics model, a virtual testing approach is used to replace costly experimental tests for obtaining stress-strain responses of composites under various loadings. The predicted elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios are in good agreement with experimental data. The substepping scheme for integrating the elasto-plastic stress-strain relations is suitable for working with displacement-based finite element codes. An illustration problem is solved to show that the plasticity tool can predict the nonlinear shear behavior for a unidirectional laminate subjected to multiaxial loadings.

Thermomechanical response of Gr/Pi composites

The effects of temperature changes upon the stresses and strains in composite laminates having carbon fibers in a polyimide matrix were evaluated. Composites having laminae in which there were nonlinear stress-strain relations for stresses transverse to the fibers and for axial shear stresses were treated. Material properties were considered to be temperature dependent. Separately, the effects of laminae viscoelastic response were also treated. The results suggest that, for this material, nonlinearities due either to stress or time dependent effects do not appear to be of major practical importance for conventional high temperature composite structures.

SSME structural computer program development. Volume 1: BOPACE theoretical manual

The BOPACE program (Boeing plastic analysis capability for engines) was developed to meet the need for an advanced thermal-elastic-plastic-creep structural analyzer by providing incremental relation between stresses and strains. The cumulative stress-strain relation, for temperature-dependent, or temperature independent elasticity is discussed along with the option for plane-stress analysis or plane-strain analysis. The BOPACE solution approach is summarized.

Characterization and modeling of tensile behavior of ceramic woven fabric composites

This paper examines the tensile behavior of SiC/SiC fabric composites. In the characterization effort, the stress-strain relation and damage evolution are studied with a series of loading and unloading tensile test experiments. The stress-strain relation is linear in response to the initial loading and becomes nonlinear when loading exceeds the proportional limit. Transverse cracking has been observed to be a dominant damage mode governing the nonlinear deformation. The damage is initiated at the inter-tow pores where fiber yarns cross over each other. In the modeling work, the analysis is based upon a fiber bundle model, in which fiber undulation in the warp and fill directions and gaps among fiber yarns have been taken into account. Two limiting cases of fabric stacking arrangements are studied. Closed form solutions are obtained for the composite stiffness and Poisson's ratio. Transverse cracking in the composite is discussed by applying a constant failure strain criterion.

Constitutive modeling of cyclic plasticity and creep, using an internal time concept

Using the concept of an internal time as related to plastic strains, a differential stress-strain relation for elastoplasticity is rederived, such that (1) the concept of a yield-surface is retained; (2) the definitions of elastic and plastic processes are analogous to those in classical plasticity theory; and (3) its computational implementation, via a 'tangent-stiffness' finite element method and a 'generalized-midpoint-radial-return' stress-integration algorithm, is simple and efficient. Also, using the concept of an internal time, as related to both the inelastic strains as well as the Newtonian time, a constitutive model for creep-plasticity interaction, is discussed. The problem of modeling experimental data for plasticity and creep, by the present analytical relations, as accurately as desired, is discussed. Numerical examples which illustrate the validity of the present relations are presented for the cases of cyclic plasticity and creep.

Fatigue life prediction in bending from axial fatigue information

Bending fatigue in the low cyclic life range differs from axial fatigue due to the plastic flow which alters the linear stress-strain relation normally used to determine the nominal stresses. An approach is presented to take into account the plastic flow in calculating nominal bending stress (S sub bending) based on true surface stress. These functions are derived in closed form for rectangular and circular cross sections. The nominal bending stress and the axial fatigue stress are plotted as a function of life (N sub S) and these curves are shown for several materials of engineering interest.

Non-linear cord-rubber composites

A method is presented for calculating the stress-strain relations in a multi-layer composite made up of materials whose individual stress-strain characteristics are non-linear and possibly different. The method is applied to the case of asymmetric tubes in tension, and comparisons with experimentally measured data are given.

Compression failure of angle-ply laminates

Test results from the compression loading of (+ or - Theta/ - or + Theta)(sub 6s) angle-ply IM7-8551-7a specimens, 0 less than or = Theta less than or = 90 degs, are presented. The observed failure strengths and modes are discussed, and typical stress-strain relations shown. Using classical lamination theory and the maximum stress criterion, an attempt is made to predict failure stress as a function of Theta. This attempt results in poor correlation with test results and thus a more advanced model is used. The model, which is based on a geometrically nonlinear theory, and which was taken from previous work, includes the influence of observed layer waviness. The waviness is described by the wave length and the wave amplitude. The theory is briefly described and results from the theory are correlated with test results. It is shown that by using levels of waviness observed in the specimens, the correlation between predictions and observations is good.

Thermal deformations and stresses in composite materials

Residual stresses are induced during curing in angle-ply laminates as a result of anisotropic thermal deformations of the variously oriented plies. Residual strains are measured experimentally using embedded strain gage techniques, and residual stresses are computed using orthotropic stress-strain relations. The results show that, for graphite and Kevlar laminates, residual stresses at room temperature are high enough to cause damage in the plies in the transverse to the fiber direction. It is also shown that residual stresses do not relax appreciably. The ply stacking sequence is found to have no effect on the magnitude of average residual stresses. Residual stresses and susceptibility to cracking during curing depend to a marked extent on ply layup.
