2010-2012 Minneapolis - St. Paul Travel Behavior Inventory

The 2010-2012 Travel Behavior Inventory (TBI) provided Minnesota policymakers and researchers with data about travel in the Minneapolis - St. Paul region. It also updated the region's travel demand forecasting, including transit ridership for major transportation projects. The Metropolitan Council in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area conducted the survey. The TBI consists of a paper-based survey and a wearable global positioning system survey. The data collection process for these two surveys was independent, and the results are not intended to function together.

Transit Rider/Travel Behavior Inventory Survey - Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro - 2010

The Metropolitan Council administered a system-wide transit on-board survey between September and November 2010 as part of the 2010 Travel Behavior Inventory to provide detailed transit usage patterns and rider information to support modeling and planning efforts. The study’s focus was to capture only the most current and reliable data necessary to determine future public transportation needs in the Minneapolis region. The study was structured to collect detailed transit ridership data for different routes during different times of day to develop a disaggregate transit trip table that will support advanced travel demand modeling. The study was designed to leverage existing data sources, such as the 2005 on-board survey, to provide the best quality data to update the Travel Behavior Inventory in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area.

Transit Rider/Travel Behavior Inventory Survey - Minneapolis-St. Paul Metro - 1990

The 1990 transit on-board survey aimed to update the 1988 survey, which was conducted as part of the Preliminary Engineering Study for the Hennepin County Light Rail Transit System. The 1988 study received Regional Transit Board funding, and survey results could be applied to a mode split model for projecting ridership on the proposed Light Rail Transit System. However, this survey was designed with the 1990 Travel Behavior Inventory in mind. The intention had been to update the 1988 survey in 1990 to be compatible with the 1990 Travel Behavior Inventory data. The results of the 1990 survey were used primarily to create a table of observed transit trips between each of the 1,200 traffic analysis zones in the region. This trip table was used to calibrate a new mode split model, which estimated future year travel by mode. The 1990 update survey focused on new routes and routes that had changed significantly since 1988. To preserve compatibility with the 1988 survey, the same survey questionnaire card was used, together with the same survey procedures for data collection. The procedures randomly sampled bus patrons during the transit trip, asking key questions about the patron and the transit trip. The survey card was intended for patrons to fill out quickly so it could be completed during the transit trip. The questions focused on conditions that have proven over time to significantly influence ridership. In all, a total of 20,126 valid survey records were processed. Adding surrogate trips, the survey data file is composed of a total of 27,159 trip records . About 10% of the records were filled out by persons who had answered more than one questionnaire.

Characterization of dynamics and decay in the St. Benedict Paul trap

The St. Benedict experiment includes a linear Paul trap designed to measure the beta-neutrino angular correlation coefficient 𝑎 𝛽ν of mixed superallowed 𝛽-decay transitions between mirror nuclei via coincidence detection of 𝛽-particles and recoiling ions. The emitted 𝛽 particle and daughter ion are detected with plastic scintillators and micro-channel plate detectors, respectively, allowing for accurate measurements of their time-of-flights. From the shape of the coincidence time-of-flight distribution, a value of 𝑎 𝛽ν can be determined. This manuscript presents detailed simulations of the St. Benedict Paul trap, with a focus on ion cloud dynamics and recoiling daughter trajectories.

The Moho as a magnetic boundary

Magnetic data are presented for mantle derived rocks: peridtites from St. Pauls rocks, dunite xenoliths from the kaupulehu flow in Hawaii, as well as peridolite, dunite and eclogite xenoliths from Roberts Victor, Dutoitspan, Kilbourne Hole, and San Carlos diatremes. The rocks are paramagnetic or very weakly ferromagnetic at room temperature. Saturation magnetization values range from 0.013 emu/gm to less than 0.001 emu/gm. A review of pertinent literature dealing with analysis of the minerals in mantle xenoliths provides evidence that metals and primary Fe3O4 are absent, and that complex CR, Mg, Al, and Fe spinels dominate the oxide mineralogy. All of the available evidence supports the magnetic results, indicating that the seismic MOHO is a magnetic boundary.

The Moho as a magnetic boundary

Magnetism in the crust and the upper mantle and magnetic results indicating that the seismic Moho is a magnetic boundary are considered. Mantle derived rocks - peridotites from St. Pauls rocks, dunite xenoliths from the Kaupulehu flow, and peridotite, dunite, and eclogite xenoliths from Roberts Victor and San Carlos diatremes - are weakly magnetic with saturation magnetization values from 0.013 emu/gm to less than 0.001 emu/gm which is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.001 wt% Fe304. Literature on the minerals in mantle xenoliths shows that metals and primary Fe304 are absent, and that complex Cr, Mg, Al, and Fe spinels are dominant. These spinels are non-magnetic at mantle temperatures, and the crust/mantle boundary can be specified as a magnetic mineralogy discontinuity. The new magnetic results indicate that the seismic Moho is a magnetic boundary, the source of magnetization is in the crust, and the maximum Curie isotherm depends on magnetic mineralogy and is located at depths which vary with the regional geothermal gradient.

Prediction of solar induced currents and effects on power transmission systems in central Canada

The auroral-electrojet zone covers three quarters of Manitoba and consequently, solar storms strongly affect transmission lines. Harmonics are generated at transformers due to the saturation of their cores by induced currents, and the level of harmonics produced may cause malfunction of control relays, and yield unacceptable distortions in normal ac waveforms. The expected effects of long ac transmission systems were studied with emphasis on a 500 kv line to be built from Winnipeg to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Spectral analysis of induced current records from Manitoba Hydro's LaVerendrye station and magnetograms from IMS stations in Manitoba were used along with results of Campbell's work on the Alaskan pipeline induction problem (1978) in order to predict periodic and surge currents. It is concluded that the surge currents will produce significant levels of harmonics and corresponding operating problems during magnetic storms.

Oceanic transform earthquakes with unusual mechanisms or locations - Relation to fault geometry and state of stress in the adjacent lithosphere

Results are presented of a search for transform earthquakes departing from the pattern whereby they occur on the principal transform displacement zone (PTDZ) and have strike-slip mechanisms consistent with transform-parallel motion. The search was conducted on the basis of source mechanisms and locations taken from the Harvard centroid moment tensor catalog and the bulletin of the International Seismological Center. The source mechanisms and centroid depths of 10 such earthquakes on the St. Paul's, Marathon, Owen, Heezen, Tharp, Menard, and Rivera transforms are determined from inversions of long-period body waveforms. Much of the anomalous earthquake activity on oceanic transforms is associated with complexities in the geometry of the PTDZ or the presence of large structural features that may influence slip on the fault.

Examining INM Accuracy Using Empirical Sound Monitoring and Radar Data

Aircraft noise measurements were made using noise monitoring systems at Denver International and Minneapolis St. Paul Airports. Measured sound exposure levels for a large number of operations of a wide range of aircraft types were compared with predictions using the FAA's Integrated Noise Model. In general it was observed that measured levels exceeded the predicted levels by a significant margin. These differences varied according to the type of aircraft and also depended on the distance from the aircraft. Many of the assumptions which affect the predicted sound levels were examined but none were able to fully explain the observed differences.
