Ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 : Evidence of the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group

Exploring ferromagnetic moments in magnetoelectric materials is of both fundamental and technological importance. It enables the control of the correlated state using an uncompensated moment. However, its material realization is challenging owing to its exclusive microscopic mechanisms. Here, we report a nearly isotropic ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 , by performing dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements on identical single crystals. Combined with the group theory analysis, we demonstrate a 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group. This implies that physical activities can occur along any crystallographic direction, which explains the unusual magnetoelectric property of Co 4⁢ Ta 2⁢ O 9 . The ground state is classified as the M-type altermagnet based on the magnetic point group. Our study provides essential information to resolve the debate on the magnetic ground state and understand the magnetoelectric properties of the related compound with the prospect of observing and examining the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group or ferromagnet in ferroelectrics.

Synthesis of a series of rare-earth-based multi-anion chalcogenide iodides RE 3 Si 2 Se x S 8− x I (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) using the flux-assisted boron–chalcogen mixture method

Single crystals and polycrystalline powders of rare earth mixed chalcogenide iodides La 3 Si 2 Se 1.21 S 6.79 I, Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I, Pr 3 Si 2 Se 1.22 S 6.78 I, and Nd 3 Si 2 Se 1.18 S 6.82 I were prepared using the reactive flux-assisted boron–chalcogen mixture (BCM) method at 850 °C. All compounds crystallized in the monoclinic crystal system, space group C2/c (space group number 15). The series adopts the La 3 Si 2 O 8 Cl structure type, containing isolated SiQ 4 tetrahedra connected by REQ 8 (RE = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) polyhedra; this arrangement creates tunnels that are filled by I atoms. The partial substitution of S by Se was carried out to modulate the optical properties. Phase pure samples and uniform solid solutions were obtained for all compositions as determined using powder X-ray diffraction patterns. Polycrystalline powders were used for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance. The solid-state UV-Vis data for the polycrystalline La 3 Si 2 Se 1.21 S 6.79 I, Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I, and Pr 3 Si 2 Se 1.22 S 6.78 I samples revealed band gaps of E g = 2.5(1), 2.2(1), and 2.3(1) eV, typical of semiconductors. Magnetic measurements indicated that Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I and Nd 3 Si 2 Se 1.18 S 6.82 I exhibit paramagnetic behavior with slightly negative Weiss constants θ = −25 and −38. The photoluminescence spectrum of Ce 3 Si 2 Se 1.39 S 6.61 I exhibits a broad emission band around ∼493 nm.

Structural Diversity and Tunable Emission in Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Copper(I) Bromides

Recently, hybrid organic−inorganic copper(I) metal halides have attracted global attention due to their intriguing optical properties and low-cost solution processability. In this work, we report three hybrid organic−inorganic copper(I) bromides, [TMPA] 2 [Cu 2 Br 4 ], [TMPA] 4 [Cu 6 Br 10 ], and [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ], synthesized through a slow evaporation method using trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA + ) as the organic cation. By precise control of the CuBr and TMPABr precursors, different copper halide [Cu 2 Br 4 ] 2− , [Cu 6 Br 10 ] 4− , and [Cu 4 Br 6 ] 2− structural units can be obtained. [TMPA] 2 [Cu 2 Br 4 ], [TMPA] 4 [Cu 6 Br 10 ], and [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] demonstrate distinct blue, orange, and greenish-yellow light emission, respectively. The first two compounds have zero-dimensional (0D) crystal structures in centrosymmetric triclinic space group P-1 and monoclinic space group P2 1 /n. In contrast, [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] features a unique one-dimensional (1D) structure and crystallizes in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2 1 /c. Consequently, the observed greenish-yellow emission of [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] is also unique, in contrast to the typical orange-red emission of 0D [Cu 4 Br 6 ]-based compounds. This work provides insights into the design of copper halide light emitters and emphasizes the influence of structural dimensionality on photoluminescence. The tunable optical properties suggest the potential of these materials for multicolor photopatterning, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting applications.

Shifting and tilting towards enhanced piezoelectricity in high-temperature ceramics: an average structure study of (1 − x )BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 – x PbTiO 3 through X-ray and neutron diffraction

A comprehensive report is provided of the average structure of a high Curie temperature ferroelectric ceramic, (1 − x)BiFe 2/8 Ti 3/8 Mg 3/8 O 3 –xPbTiO 3 (BFTM–xPT) when x = 0.25–0.375 at room temperature. Both neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were collected and combined Rietveld refinements were completed. These data revealed that, of the compositions studied, BFTM–xPT crystallizes as mixed phase material. At x = 0.25–0.275, the average structure of each phase is best described by space groups R3c and Cc. At 0.30 ≥ x ≥ 0.35, a morphotropic phase boundary is present and is best modelled by space groups P4mm and Cc, where space group Cc is the dominant phase. As the concentration of PbTiO 3 increases, the amount of octahedral tilting decreases and x = 0.375 exhibits a loss of octahedral tilting and crystallizes in space groups P4mm and Cm. In conclusion, an updated phase diagram at room temperature of this novel system is given and structural intricacies responsible for its piezoelectric properties are revealed.

Four new d 0 transition metal tellurites, namely InVTeO 6 (1), β-InVTe 2 O 8 (2), FeVTe 2 O 8 (3), and Fe 2 MoTe 2 O 10 (4), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, and their crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 (No. 19), with unit cell parameters of a = 5.0759(2) Å, b = 8.5030(3) Å, c = 11.6376(5) Å, V = 502.28(3) Å 3 , and Z = 4, while the other three compounds crystallize in centrosymmetric structures, with space group Cmca and unit cell parameters of a = 7.0633(7) Å, b = 8.962(1) Å, c = 20.162(2) Å, V = 1276.3(2) Å 3 , and Z = 8 for compound 2, space group P2 1 /n and unit cell parameters of a = 7.8901(2) Å, b = 4.9617(1) Å, c = 16.4290(3) Å, β = 93.6198(8)°, V = 641.88(2) Å 3 , and Z = 4 for compound 3, and space group Pnma and unit cell parameters of a = 8.7878(2) Å, b = 6.1327(2) Å, c = 15.2423(4) Å, V = 821.45(4) Å 3 , and Z = 4 for compound 4. Compound 3 adopts a two-dimensional (2D) sheet structure composed of FeO 6 octahedra, VO 4 tetrahedra, and TeO 4 polyhedra. The other three compounds exhibit three-dimensional (3D) framework structures: Compound 1 is built from InO 6 octahedra, VO 4 tetrahedra, TeO 4 polyhedra; Compound 2 consists of InO 6 octahedra, VO 5 square pyramids, and TeO 3 polyhedra; and Compound 4 is composed of FeO 6 octahedra, MoO 6 octahedra, and TeO 3 polyhedra. The band structures, density of states, and electron localization functions of all four compounds were calculated. The vibrational spectra were examined for compounds 1, 2, and 4. Furthermore, powder X-ray diffraction, element analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis were conducted for compound 4.

Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method for Synthesizing Mixed Chalcogenide Semiconductors (AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8– x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 ) ( Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm): Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

We report a detailed structural analysis of a series of ten quaternary rare-earth-containing seleno-thiosilicates AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and selenosilicates, CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 (Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm). Single crystals were obtained by using the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method and single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine their structures. All members of the AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 series crystallize in the space group R$\bar{3}$c (space group number 167) of the trigonal crystal system. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a strong preference for Se/S atoms to occupy one vs. the other of the two available sites. Polycrystalline samples were used for magnetic susceptibility and UV–visible diffuse reflectance measurements. Magnetic measurements show that CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇ and CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅ are paramagnetic with negative Weiss constants (θ = –60.1 and –26.2). Diffuse reflectance analysis gives optical band gaps of 2.7(1) eV (CaLa₂Si₂Se₂.₃₈S₅.₆₂), 2.2(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇), 2.5(1) eV (CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅), and 2.0(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₈), consistent with density functional theory calculations. By partially or fully replacing S sites with Se it was possible to achieve band gap tuning. Photoluminescence behavior was also investigated for CaCe 2 Si 2 Se 1.73 S 6.27 via irradiation with 375 nm ultraviolet light.

A New Family of Ternary Intermetallic Compounds with Dualistic Atomic Ordering – The ZIP Phases

A new family of nanostructured ternary intermetallic compounds − named the ZIP phases − is introduced in this work. The ZIP phases exhibit dualistic atomic ordering, i.e., they form two structural variants: one with the fcc diamond cubic structure (space group Fd$\bar{3}$m) and one with the hexagonal structure (space group P6 3 /mmc). They are also characterized by metallic behavior, ionic bonding, and atomic zigzagging. Powder metallurgical routes involving pressure-assisted densification are adopted to demonstrate ZIP phase synthesis in the Nb-Si-Ni, Nb-Si-Co, Ta-Si-Ni, V-Si-Ni, and Nb-Si-Fe ternary systems. Crucially, reactive hot pressing is capable of producing high-purity ZIP phase materials after the judicious, elemental system-specific optimization of the processing route. Synthesis of phase-pure materials – demonstrated in the Nb-Si-Ni ternary system by the synthesis of quasi phase-pure Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 ZIP phase-based materials – is a steppingstone to the prospective exploitation of the ZIP phases. Characterization of Nb 3 SiNi 2 and Ni 3 SiNb 2 involves crystal structure determination, spatially resolved chemical analysis, and determination of select thermal, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and physical properties. Density functional theory is used to assess the stability of Nb 3 SiNi 2 & Ni 3 SiNb 2 and derivative binary compounds at different temperatures, also exploring the exfoliation of these two ZIP phases along specific surfaces to produce 2D derivatives.

Physical properties investigation of tetragonal Ba T 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd)

The structural, thermal, electrical transport, and magnetic properties of ternary compounds BaT 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd) are reported together with electronic structure calculations. Our results show that BaRu 2 P 2 crystallises in the layered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group I4/mmm) whereas BaPd 2 P 2 adopts the primitive tetragonal CeMg 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group P4/mmm). The combined experimental results and electronic structure calculations suggest metallic and diamagnetic ground states for both materials. Electrical transport measurements further indicate non-Fermi liquid behaviour at low temperatures. Notably, BaRu 2 P 2 exhibits an anomalous feature in the magnetic susceptibility at T ~ 260 K, similar to that observed in BaRu 2 As 2 . A comparison between the bare density of states obtained from electronic structure calculations and the experimentally estimated values suggests the presence of strong correlation effects in the material. Furthermore, the heat capacity of BaPd 2 P 2 , calculated using the full phonon dispersion relation, is in good agreement with the experimental data, particularly at low temperatures, highlighting the significant contribution of optical phonon branches to C P in this temperature range.

The Zintl pnictides Yb10CdSb9 and Yb14CdSb11: New candidate thermoelectric materials

The synthesis of new materials is the lifeline of solid-state science, and it continues to offer us unique opportunities for testing various theoretical formulations and models on a practical material. Such an avenue, therefore, provides a breeding ground for technological innovations and advancements that can completely revolutionize our world. Here, we report the results of our exploratory syntheses in the Yb–Cd–Sb compositional space that lead to the identification of two new Zintl antimonides, namely, Yb10CdSb9 and Yb14CdSb11. Their crystal structures were established via single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods; the basic electronic and transport properties of the new materials were also characterized. Yb10CdSb9 crystallizes in a disordered variant of the tetragonal Ca10LiMgSb9 structure type with unit cell parameters a = 11.8473(8) Å and c = 17.1302(12) Å (space group P42/mnm). Yb14CdSb11 crystallizes in the tetragonal Ca14AlSb11 structure type with unit cell parameters: a = 16.605(3) Å and c = 12.144(7) Å (space group I41/acd). Although the structures of both compounds can be rationalized within the framework of the Zintl formalism, based on the partitioning of the valence electrons in the much disordered Yb10CdSb9 phase, the charge is indicative of a slightly electron-rich composition. Electronic structure calculations in both cases support the notion of intrinsic semiconductor behavior, as expected for a Zintl phase. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a single crystal of Yb10CdSb9 is in line with that, and the evolution of the Seebeck coefficient indicates an electron-dominated transport mechanism, and a respectable power factor of 0.71 μW/cm K2 at 460 K can be calculated for Yb10CdSb9. The electrical resistivity of Yb14CdSb11, however, evolves in a semimetallic manner, which could suggest an overdoped sample or degenerate semiconducting behavior.

Mild Hydrothermal Crystal Growth of Two Luminescing Uranyl Phosphates Exhibiting an Autunite-Type Sheet Structure

Two new layered uranyl phosphate compounds, K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 and Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 , crystallizing in an autunite-type sheet structure, were successfully synthesized as both single-crystals and polycrystalline powders under mild hydrothermal conditions. The compound K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4/ncc, exhibiting lattice parameters of a = b = 6.99320(7) Å and c = 17.8389(3) Å. Similarly, Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 also crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system, however, in the space group P4/nmm and exhibits lattice parameters of a = b = 6.9787 Å and c = 8.6303(17) Å. Both compounds adopt layered structures, a characteristic feature of uranyl phosphates, and exhibit intense green fluorescence typical for uranyl-containing materials. As a result, the infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties of these compounds were investigated.

Emergence of heavy-fermion behavior and distorted square nets in partially vacancy-ordered Y 4 Fe x Ge 8 (1.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5)

Disorders in intermetallic systems belonging to the CeNiSi 2 -family are frequently overlooked. Even compounds presumed to be stoichiometric, such as YFeGe 2 , can be misidentified. Here, in this study, we report a series of Y 4 Fe x Ge 8 (1.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5) compounds and show, using high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, that they feature asymmetrical structural distortions in the Fe and Ge sites that lead to a superstructure with partially ordered Fe vacancies and distorted Ge square-net in the triclinic crystal system, space group P[1 with combining macron] with a = 11.4441(3) Å, b = 32.7356(7) Å, c = 11.4456(3) Å, α = 79.6330(10)°, β = 88.3300(10)°, and γ = 79.6350 (10)°. The unit cell is 16 times the conventional orthorhombic cell with the space group Cmcm. We identified the lower and upper limits for Fe in Y 4 Fe x Ge 8 (1.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5). Our physical property measurements yielded a Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 39.8 mJ mole −1 K −2 , a Kadowaki–Woods ratio of 1.2 × 10 −5 μΩ cm mole 2 K 2 mJ −2 , and a Wilson ratio of 1.83, suggesting heavy fermion behavior in the absence of f electrons, a rather rare case. Furthermore, we observed strong spin frustration and noted findings indicating possible superconductivity associated with the Fe content.

Magnetic structure evolution of LiFe 1- x Co x PO 4 olivines upon delithiation

We present a comprehensive study of the nuclear and magnetic structures of the mixed olivine solid solution series LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 as well as their delithiated counterparts, for metal concentrations x = 0.2 - 0.6. Through neutron powder diffraction studies, we find that the LiFe 1-x Co x PO 4 series orders in the magnetic space group Pnma', consistent with their Li(Fe/Co)PO 4 parent structures. After chemical delithiation using peracetic acid, however, the removal of over 30% of the lithium from the lattice results in a transition from an A y -type to an A x -type antiferromagnetic structure. The magnetic space group consistent with A x antiferromagnetism was found to be Pn'm'a'. Interestingly, magnetic susceptibility measurements of both series reveal that delithiation increases the magnetic transition temperature, T N , from 50 K to 115 K. We find through analysis of the diffraction data that the unit cell parameters change linearly as a function of x; consequently, the exchange pathways between the Fe/Co magnetic cations are affected by the delithiation. Here, we discuss how exchange pathways, metal oxidation states, and d-orbital occupation all contribute to the observed magnetic symmetries and trends in T N in both series.

d -Electron Heavy Fermion Behavior in a Near-Room-Temperature Polar Metallic Ferrimagnet: A Case of Mn 5 SiC

Polycrystalline Mn 5 SiC was synthesized by using a high-temperature solid-state method. Mn 5 SiC adopts a polar space group (Cmc2 1 ) with six crystallographic Mn sites confirmed by X-ray and neutron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and second harmonic generation experiments. The complex crystal structure features edge-sharing trigonal prisms and icosahedra, as well as face/edge-sharing pentagonal prisms. Magnetic measurements indicate ferrimagnetic ordering with a transition temperature of 284 K. The ferrimagnetic structure (magnetic space group Cm’c’2 1 ) was further identified by powder neutron diffraction, where collinear Mn spins align along the crystallographic c-axis. The refined magnetic moment for each crystallographic Mn site at 4 K is 1.8(2), −2.42(9), −1.72(8), 0.51(6), 0.50(4), and 1.7(2) μ B . Density functional theory calculations confirm both the metallic behavior and the ferrimagnetic structure observed experimentally and further provide insight into the observed Mn moment dependence across crystallographic sites. The resistivity and specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal a substantially large Kadowaki–Woods ratio of 5 × 10 –5 μΩ·cm/(mJ/mol) 2 and a many-body renormalization factor of 5.5, indicating the unusual heavy Fermion behavior in such an itinerant magnetic metal.

Cooper-pair density modulation state in an iron-based superconductor

Superconducting (SC) states that break space-group symmetries of the underlying crystal can exhibit nontrivial spatial modulation of the order parameter. Previously, such states were intimately associated with the breaking of translational symmetry, resulting in the density-wave orders, with wavelengths spanning several unit cells. However, a related basic concept has long been overlooked: when only intra-unit-cell symmetries of the space group are broken, the SC states can show a distinct type of nontrivial modulation preserving long-range lattice translation. Here, in this study, we refer to this new concept as the pair density modulation (PDM) and report the first observation of a PDM state in exfoliated thin flakes of the iron-based superconductor FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 . Using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), we discover robust SC gap modulation with the wavelength corresponding to the lattice periodicity and the amplitude exceeding 30% of the gap average. Notably, we find that the observed modulation originates from the large difference in SC gaps on the two nominally equivalent iron sublattices. The experimental findings, backed up by model calculations, suggest that, in contrast to the density-wave orders, the PDM state is driven by the interplay of sublattice symmetry breaking and a peculiar nematic distortion specific to the thin flakes. Our results establish new frontiers for exploring the intertwined orders in strong-correlated electronic systems and open a new chapter for iron-based superconductors.

Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er 2 ⁢Be 2⁢ GeO 7 , an SSL compound with Er 3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by nonmagnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the 𝑃⁢$\bar{4}21$⁢𝑚 space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising model symmetric under the 𝐶⁢𝑚⁢𝑚⁢2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢GeO 7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

Supramolecular Assembly of Multielement Ribbon-like Structures Derived from Halide Perovskites

Halide perovskites are crucial materials with broad applications owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Vacancy-ordered double perovskites, featuring highly tunable transition metal sites, enable controllable optoelectronic properties through multielement compositional design. Here, in this study, we introduced 18-crown-6 into the vacancy-ordered double perovskites system and developed two-dimensional ribbon-like single crystals (18C6@K) 2 {PtSnTeIrRe} 1 Cl 6 via an antisolvent supramolecular assembly method, demonstrating morphology modulation through multielement composition design. The crystals crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group $P\bar{1}$. The dumbbell-shaped structural units (crown ether@A)2MX6 pack along a and b axes to form a 2-dimensional (2D) monolayer, and these monolayers further stack along the c axis to generate the ribbon-like single crystals. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) qualitatively confirmed the uniform distribution of the five transition metals throughout the crystal, while inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP–AES) quantitatively verified their atomic ratios. We further investigated the origin of the morphology, distinct from the previously reported cube-like single crystals with the $R\bar{3}$ space group. When acetonitrile was used as the solvent, three-dimensional crystals with $R\bar{3}$ symmetry were obtained, whereas dimethylformamide (DMF) was essential for forming two-dimensional ribbon-like single crystals. The essential role of DMF could be ascribed to its capability to maintain a higher concentration of the building blocks. Moreover, Ir 4+ and Pt 4+ cations also played critical roles in inducing the two-dimensional ribbon-like morphology. The three-element (18C6@K) 2 {PtSnTe}1Cl 6 single crystals exhibited bright yellow emission under 375 nm laser excitation, demonstrating the tunability of optoelectronic properties of this class of material.

Synthesis, Structures, and Transport Properties of Quaternary Ba–Ag– Tr –As Materials ( Tr = Ga, In)

The synthesis, structures, and properties of two quaternary barium–arsenide materials are presented. The first, Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 , is a novel material with the monoclinic unit cell ( P 2 1 / m space group). The layered crystal structure of Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 may be considered a lower‐symmetry, distorted analog of the LaCuSb 2 structure. The structure features a rare As fragment, cis‐trans As chains along the [010] direction. Large crystals of Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 can be grown from Bi flux and are used for subsequent transport property measurements. Electrical resistivity and heat capacity properties are reported, establishing Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 as a metallic phase. The second material, Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 , is a 3D material that crystallizes in the orthorhombic unit cell (noncentrosymmetric and polar Iba 2 space group). Expanding upon its original discovery, the optimized synthetic profile for single‐phase polycrystalline samples as well as transport properties relevant to thermoelectric applications are presented. Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 exhibits a high Seebeck coefficient of 290 μV K −1 at room temperature, indicative of lower carrier concentrations typical for nonmetallic phases. Electrical resistivity measurements also affirm conventional semiconducting behavior for Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 .
