Expanding Solar Research and Generation for a Bright Energy Future (Final Technical Report)

This project supported the construction of an outdoor solar research facility for the primary purpose of characterizing panel and system lifetimes in the northern New England climate which features cold winters and warm, humid summers. The facility is designed to be integrated into future efforts to explore the impacts of the New England climate on energy storage and grid integration, as well as methods to mitigate factors like snow and dust coverage in the industrial and agricultural environment of the Intervale farming community and the McNeil wood-fired power generating station. It will provide year-round renewable energy research opportunities for faculty and students. As renewable energy generation and storage have become research priorities for UVM, for the state of Vermont, and for the United States as a whole, this facility will benefit the public on a broad range of scales.

Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) Core Project Final Report: Fiscal Years 2022-2024

The Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is a world-leading solar calibration and measurement facility and maintains and disseminates the World Radiation Reference (essentially the W/m2) for the United States that is essential for traceable and accurate measurements of solar radiation at all solar generation facilities. SRRL operates two calibration facilities that meet International Standards Organization-17025 (ISO-17025) standards and provide unique high-quality calibrations to NREL and other U.S. Department of Energy laboratories. The Baseline Measurement System (BMS) at SRRL provides a high-quality record of solar irradiance and surface meteorological conditions. SRRL capabilities are used to develop (1) improved methods for the calibration of solar radiometers; (2) new standards through the ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the American Standards for Testing of Materials (ASTM) International; (c) solar radiation and meteorological models; and (d) advanced instrumentation and methods for operating solar measurement stations. The SRRL datasets are also critical for the validation of new models and datasets, such as the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). The research and development of solar radiation measurement systems and resource modeling techniques are essential for advancing the scientific basis for producing reliable resource data. Specifically, the spatial, temporal, and spectral (wavelength dependency) characteristics of the solar resource are required in several different time frames for various project phases.

Standard Operating Procedure for Optimal Deployment of Meteorological Instrumentation Within the Solar Radiation Research Laboratory: 2025 Edition

The objective of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) is to collect and use high-quality solar radiation data sets for research leading to the widespread adoption of solar technologies. To appropriately populate and track the diverse array of instruments at the NREL-SRRL, NREL has established a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for optimal instrument deployment within the SRRL for both the Baseline Measurement System (BMS) and the Research Measurement System (RMS). Using best practices methodologies, the NREL-SRRL maintains a varied and extensive array of solar monitoring equipment to test, evaluate, and characterize the solar sensors used by federal and international agencies as well as the solar industry to determine the solar resource. The SOP provides the industry with guidance for solar resource assessment and is used for procedures in the long-term continuous monitoring of legacy instruments alongside state-of-the-art instruments. Based on the SOP, instruments are annually evaluated for continued deployment. Instruments that do not meet the SOP criteria are decommissioned, and new instruments that meet the criteria are deployed. Streamlining and optimizing the use of this facility ensures that the lab continues to be a world-leading solar calibration and measurement facility. This 2025 edition includes updates to the appendices to describe the current instrumentation of the NREL-SRRL.

TTW (Transition to Wire Device) [SWR-25-02]

The Transition to Wire (TTW) hardware project is a method for connecting solar research samples with fragile interconnects to robust, weatherproof and consistent commercial connectors. The Transition to Wire device is a printed circuit board designed to facilitate the transition from tab ribbon or other unsecured electrical contacts on research samples to either wires or a connector. The four pin connector provides a kelvin (4 wire) connection at the solder pad where the sample connects.

Development of an Unbiased Future Solar Dataset for Solar Resource Adequacy Research Over CONUS

A high-resolution, long-term solar dataset is essential for capturing the variability of solar energy resources and informing strategies to ensure grid reliability and resilience in systems with high levels of solar energy integration. This study focuses on generating unbiased, high-resolution projections of solar irradiance through a statistical downscaling framework, using Earth system model (ESM) simulations obtained from the North American Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (NA-CORDEX). The National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) is used to calibrate statistical downscaling models. The newly developed dataset provides solar irradiance, surface air temperature, and surface wind speed at 4-km and hourly resolutions across the contiguous United States (CONUS), based on two future scenarios (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). This study outlines key steps in developing the high-resolution future solar dataset, including (1) regridding ESM data to a common 20-km resolution grid, (2) correcting ESM biases using the NSRDB, and (3) applying temporal and spatial downscaling methods to generate high-resolution (4-km, hourly) solar projections. Preliminary results indicate that downscaled projections (4-km) captured reasonable spatial patterns when compared to observations across CONUS for four variables. On average across all pixels, 4-km daily-total GHI and DNI projections showed normalized bias (nBias) less than 1% and 6% for GHI and DNI against NSRDB, respectively (nBias less than 1% and 5% for daily-average surface air temperature and surface wind speed). In terms of long-term trend for GHI and DNI, there was no strong increasing or decreasing trend (when compared to surface air temperature), but it showed a very weak decreasing trend.

Synergies and trade-offs of multi-use solar landscapes

Research on multi-use solar-combining solar energy with agriculture (agrivoltaics) or natural vegetation (ecovoltaics)-is developing rapidly, but interdisciplinary integration is needed to better address management issues and to guide future research. Agrivoltaics allows farmers to develop and manage microclimates, which can help to retain or expand agricultural production in the context of changing climate and land-water limitations. However, improvements in food-energy production and other co-benefits are often site-specific, depending on background climate, soil conditions and system design. In conclusion, to optimize multi-use systems, it is essential to consider local economic impacts, ecosystem services and stakeholder perspectives in design and implementation.

Collaborative R&D with REEL Solar Inc (REEL) to Understand and Overcome Performance Limitations in CdTe Solar Cells: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

This CRADA will focus on processing, advanced characterization, and testing of photovoltaic materials and devices to understand and improve REEL CdTe solar technology. This will include examining process variations and different buffer, absorber, and contact layers from REEL and NLR to maximize performance. The unique and diverse advanced characterization tools at NLR, such as time-resolved photoluminescence, capacitance-voltage measurements, electron beam scattered diffraction, cathodoluminescence, electron microscopy, TOF-SIMS, and other measurements will be applied to characterize REEL processing to improve understanding and guide experimental directions. Accelerated stability and potential induced degradation tests will be used to analyze metastability, short-and-long term degradation, and improve bankability. A second and major thrust this period will be joint development of Si/CdTe tandem solar cells to overcome industry wide terrestrial solar efficiency limits with the two lowest cost and manufacturable solar materials today. This will include developing novel transparent back contacts that can be incorporated into tandem structures and other novel solar applications, detailed analysis of designs and configurations for CdTe/Si tandem modules, and prototyping REEL CdTe Technology with Si bottom cells in tandem structures.

Inkjet Printing to Scale Perovskite and Silicon Tandem Solar Cell: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-17-00690

The proposed project seeks to develop a method for inkjet printing of the active layer in perovskite solar cells for application in stand-alone products or added to conventional silicon solar cells in a mechanically-stacked tandem configuration. This technology presents significant advanced manufacturing challenges and opportunities in getting to scale, including development of novel uses for printing technologies and development of predictive quality control techniques.

Evaluating Microchannel Heat Exchanger Lifetime for Concentrating Solar Power Applications Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR-1)

Microchannel heat exchanger technology is being pursued for next generation CSP concepts for primary power cycle heat addition and power cycle heat recuperation due to the high heat transfer coefficients and pressure containment advantages of small sCO 2 channels. The economics of future CSP plants as dictated by the SETO 2020 or 2030 targets depend on a heat exchanger with a 30-year lifetime (resisting creep, fatigue, corrosion, erosion) and operational characteristics such as fast ramping and the ability to withstand thermal shock. However, the lifetime and operational limits of microchannel heat exchangers operating at high temperatures, particularly those constructed from high-nickel alloys, are not well known. This uncertainty has resulted in heat exchanger vendors not being able to accurately forecast heat exchanger lifetime as required by customers, specify operational limits as required by process engineers to prevent premature heat exchanger failure, or overdesign heat exchanger which leads to higher cost than necessary.

Network science can improve the sustainable development of solar energy

Abstract The recent emergence of agrivoltaic and ecovoltaic approaches to ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) energy provides a much-needed alternative to the environmentally disruptive practices employed in utility-scale solar development. Research on such land-sharing approaches has grown rapidly, with an emphasis on characterizing how PV arrays impact ecosystem processes and agricultural productivity. Although these studies have done well to quantify a variety of dual-use solar practices by employing site-specific sampling designs, this approach has limited our ability to synthesize results across sites, regions, and globally. We call for a network science approach for improved cross-site synthesis of dual-use solar research. We contend that a common approach for data collection and synthesis will facilitate a more rigorous investigation of the agricultural and ecological impacts of PV development across space and over time. The products of this scientifically informed approach can be directly applied to improve sustainable land management.

A Critical Review of Heliostat Design for Concentrating Solar Thermal Technologies

Heliostat designs have undergone a widespread and eclectic development process, with many unique designs demonstrated. However, recent developments do not show the overall cohort converging toward a globally accepted universal design. Here, this study characterizes heliostats by breaking down and evaluating design traits based on emergent patterns from a comprehensive compilation of known heliostat designs spanning several decades. Four main categories for evaluation emerged: heliostat base, heliostat primary axis, heliostat drive, and facet support. Each of these four categories is further defined by four subtypes so that all heliostats fall into a single subtype within each category. The classified heliostats are ranked, yielding several view slices into the heliostat compilation or a breakdown of heliostats by type. An analysis of the breakdown shows several trends: a scale-up of established designs, new approaches at small to medium scales, and a movement toward greater adoption of linear drives. These trends reflect the most meaningful contributing factors to a proposed trajectory for a new era of heliostat designs striving to meet widely considered cost targets of $\$$50/m 2 or $\$$75/m 2 .

Performance of Quantum Dot Coatings for Luminescent Solar Concentrating Windows: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-16-00640

The two major outcomes from this DOE supported collaboration between UbiQD and NREL were: 1) an expert analysis/modeling of the expected performance and cost of luminescent solar concentrating windows with quantum dot coatings, and 2) critical R&D characterization of materials and device performance analysis using equipment and processes that are too expensive for UbiQD to perform in-house. The latter also included third-party validation of the device performance with an NREL-certified conversion efficiency that was ultimately published. (see ACS Energy Lett. 2018 and recently ACS Appl. Energy Mater. 2020).

Recovery of terephthalic acid from solar PV backsheets using waste solvent from distilled spirits production

Current research on solar photovoltaic (PV) recycling mainly focuses on recovering valuable metals and glass, often neglecting the polymeric components, particularly the backsheets, which are typically landfilled or thermally decomposed. This study explores an innovative approach to upcycle PV backsheets into value-added products, specifically terephthalic acid (TPA), using waste ethanol solvent from the distilled spirits industry. Experimental results show that increasing both exposure time and ethanol concentration significantly enhances backsheet delamination efficiency. Using waste ethanol, a maximum delamination efficiency of 80% was achieved at room temperature after 24 hours. In decomposition trials, both sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) demonstrated comparable efficiencies (96.6–97.5%) over 8 and 24 hour reactions. With virgin ethanol, NaOH yielded 94–97.5% TPA recovery. Notably, using waste ethanol achieved a TPA recovery efficiency of 96.8%, underscoring the process's economic viability and sustainability. Analytical characterization of TPA recovered after 8 hours showed consistent spectral patterns across both alkalis and solvents, indicating a similar chemical environment and functional groups. The recovered TPA can be repolymerized into high-purity PET, suitable for manufacturing new PV backsheets. This work advances polymer-recycling by demonstrating that an industrial waste solvent (distilled-spirits ‘heads’) can replace virgin ethanol without loss in delamination performance or TPA yield. While PV backsheet PET is a modest share of global PET, using waste ethanol to upcycle this currently under-recycled stream demonstrates a transferable solvent-reuse pathway that can extend to higher-volume PET sources.

Photoelectrochemical materials for solar energy conversion

Research and development on semiconductors for applications in solar energy conversion has witnessed rapid growth over the past several decades. With the aim of producing chemical fuels from sunlight, intense research efforts have focused on the discovery of semiconductors with crystalline structures and chemical compositions that have the potential to satisfy the complex set of required photoelectrochemical properties. This chapter focuses on the foundational structure-property relationships of selected oxide and nitride semiconductors relevant to their uses as n-/p-type photoelectrodes and as photocatalysts. Their solid-state structures and compositions are described, with a special emphasis on strategies proven effective at targeting suitable band gaps with strong visible-light absorption, efficient charge separation and diffusion of charge carriers, and optimal band edge energies for driving surface redox reactions for water splitting.

Solar Design/Install Labor Quantification (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report)

The goals of this project were to quantify the rate and/or total expected labor expenditure of engineers designing solar arrays and electricians installing solar across a spectrum of project sizes and configurations. Specifically, procuring and analyzing labor data from solar engineering firms relating to the amount of time it takes an engineer to design a solar project, the amount of time it takes an engineer to perform a wiring or stringing design, the amount of time it takes an electrician to install a solar project and the amount of time it takes electricians to install the strings of a solar array. Then these details could be analyzed to evaluate labor intensity for solar design/installation. These goals were unable to be completed because the participant was unable to collect the necessary data for analysis.

Low-dimensional carbon materials decorated FAPbI 3 for carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Carbon nanomaterials are at the forefront of research in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their exceptional electrical, optical, and stability properties. Their diverse applications include serving as interfacial layers, additives, hole and electron transport materials, and back electrodes. While the influence of various low-dimensional carbon nanomaterial structures on crystallinity, optical and electrical performance, and overall device efficiency has been a topic of interest, it has not been thoroughly explored until now. In this study, we effectively integrated carbon quantum dots (CQDs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphene into the FAPbI 3 photoactive layer using a two-step sequential deposition method. Our experiments revealed marked improvements in the photovoltaic performance of PSCs that incorporated all three types of carbon nanomaterials. In particular, the data shows significant enhancements in power conversion efficiency, demonstrating the effectiveness of these materials in optimizing device functionality. Notably, MWCNTs distinguished themselves by exhibiting a remarkable potential for enhancing long-term stability. This finding underscores the importance of selecting the right carbon nanomaterials for future PSC developments, paving the way for more reliable and efficient solar energy solutions. As a result, our research highlights the critical role of carbon nanomaterials in advancing perovskite solar technology.
