Materials Data on SiI4 by Materials Project

SiI4 is Silicon tetrafluoride-like structured and crystallizes in the cubic Pa-3 space group. The structure is zero-dimensional and consists of eight silicon tetraiodide molecules. Si4+ is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to four I1- atoms. There are one shorter (2.45 Å) and three longer (2.46 Å) Si–I bond lengths. There are two inequivalent I1- sites. In the first I1- site, I1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Si4+ atom. In the second I1- site, I1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Si4+ atom.

Rapid Solid-State Metathesis Routes to Nanostructured Silicon-Germainum

Methods for producing nanostructured silicon and silicon-germanium via solid state metathesis (SSM). The method of forming nanostructured silicon comprises the steps of combining a stoichiometric mixture of silicon tetraiodide (SiI4) and an alkaline earth metal silicide into a homogeneous powder, and initating the reaction between the silicon tetraiodide (SiI4) with the alkaline earth metal silicide. The method of forming nanostructured silicon-germanium comprises the steps of combining a stoichiometric mixture of silicon tetraiodide (SiI4) and a germanium based precursor into a homogeneous powder, and initiating the reaction between the silicon tetraiodide (SiI4) with the germanium based precursors.

Electricity from sunlight

The paper discusses a number of new unconventional processes proposed for the low-cost production of silicon for solar cells. Consideration is given to: (1) the Battelle process (Zn/SiCl4), (2) the Battelle process (SiI4), (3) the Silane process, (4) the Motorola process (SiF4/SiF2), (5) the Westinghouse process (Na/SiCl4), (6) the Dow Corning process (C/SiO2), (7) the AeroChem process (SiCl4/H atom), and the Stanford process (Na/SiF4). Preliminary results indicate that the conventional process and the SiI4 processes cannot meet the project goal of $10/kg by 1986. Preliminary cost evaluation results for the Zn/SiCl4 process are favorable.
