The Scorpius Accelerator and the NNSS [Slides]

Scorpius is an electron accelerator designed to take x-ray images of weapon components (Flash Radiography). The final design was completed in January 2022. The accelerator start-up will begin in 2025. The Weapons Labs and NNSS are building the Scorpius Accelerator. The NNSS will commission, operate, maintain and upgrade Scorpius.

Prospects for Machine Learning and Pulse Shaping on the Scorpius Accelerator [Poster]

The Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) project aims to build Scorpius, a multi pulse linear induction accelerator capable of delivering a 1.4 kA electron beam at energies up to 24 MeV. One of the primary advancements of Scorpius is the use of solid state pulsed power (SSPP) to provide flexibility in pulse shaping by independently triggering 45 individual stages stacked in each of 984 line replaceable units (LRU), with 168 LRUs dedicated to the injector. By leveraging circuit modeling of each LRU stage, a machine learning model of the SSPP will be developed to allow for optimization of the pulse shape, including pulse flattening and reflection mitigation. Particle-in-cell simulations of Scorpius have, for example, demonstrated that reducing reflections during multi-pulse operation mitigates beam spill by preventing the production of off-energy electrons between pulses, thereby abating stimulated ion desorption from the wall and beam charge neutralization. This machine learning model will be validated and tuned with experimental data collected from the Scorpius injector and Integrated Test Stand

Electron-Beam Corkscrew Motion in an Advanced Linear Induction Accelerator

Scorpius is a multipulse linear induction accelerator (LIA) under development for flash radiography. Because it has substantially more cells than present LIAs, higher magnetic focusing fields are needed to suppress beam breakup (BBU). Therefore, it is more susceptible to corkscrew motion of the beam, which also depends on beam energy spread and focusing magnet misalignments. For energy spread and alignment tolerances expected for Scorpius, a magnetic tune designed to suppress BBU is shown to produce corkscrew motion within the range that can be controlled through the use of steering dipoles on existing LIAs. Finally, a gap-voltage modulation scheme is shown to almost completely eliminate chromatic effects such as corkscrew.

An Electron-Beam Ion-Neutralization Diagnostic for the Scorpius Radiography Accelerator

Electron beam spilling onto the beam pipe can produce positive ions that are accelerated inward into the beam body by its space charge. These ions partially neutralize the space charge, thereby causing the beam to be mismatched to the magnetic fields used for transport. A diagnostic of neutralization effects has been used on present accelerators, and in this note the feasibility of its use on a future accelerator is assessed.

Beam Position Monitor: Sensors, Calibration and Analysis [Slides]

A beam position monitor (BPM) provides information on electron beam current and position, essential to meeting the performance requirements for the Scorpius accelerator as laid down in FR1.1 –FR1.8 and FR2.2. The critical elements in employing BPM’s to meet those requirements are design of the sensor, design of calibration equipment for the sensor, and design of methods to record and process data.
