Exploring the phase space of Zn 2 SbN 3 , a novel semiconducting nitride

The novel semiconductor Zn 2 SbN 3 is one of a growing list of ternary nitrides with promise for optoelectronic and energy applications. Previous work by Arca et al. [Materials Horizons, 2019, 6, 1669–1974] first reported synthesis of this material, but did not explore the effects of growth conditions on material formation. In this work, we present a semi-automated study of the relationship between growth conditions and crystallinity via high-throughput RF sputtering and a custom X-ray diffraction analysis routine. Zn 2 SbN 3 is found to crystallize in a wide range of growth conditions, and the formation of several contaminant phases is examined. Electron microscopy of these secondary phases, caused both by off-stoichiometry and by growth conditions, provides insight into the growth mechanisms of Zn 2 SbN 3 . Furthermore, computational work relates this material to other Zn-based ternary nitrides and offers an explanation for the difficulty of growing cation-ordered material despite the wide range of growth conditions explored.

Pandora-based muon neutrino disappearance search in the SBN program with 1muonNp quasi-elastic like channel

The Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab aims to perform a definitive search for light sterile neutrinos using multiple liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. We present the status of an analysis of muon neutrino charged-current interactions in two SBN detectors (SBND and ICARUS), selecting fully contained events with one muon and at least one proton in the final state, inspired by the recent ICARUS standalone results. This topology-driven selection reduces dependence on neutrino interaction cross-section modeling while preserving high statistics and good neutrino energy resolution, enabled by robust reconstruction and particle identification. Fully contained events enable precise kinematic reconstruction and support relative measurements between detectors, directly addressing the core goals of the SBN program. A detailed evaluation of systematic uncertainties is currently underway, with the objective of reducing the dominant systematics to the percent level. The current status of this analysis, with a particular focus on the event selection performance, will be presented in this poster.

SBN-BD: O(10 GeV) Proton Beam Dump at Fermilab’s PIP-II Linac

Proton beam dumps are prolific sources of mesons enabling a powerful technique to search for vector mediator coupling of dark matter to neutral pion and higher mass meson decays. By the end of the decade the PIP-II linac will be delivering up to 1 MW of proton power to the FNAL campus. This includes a significant increase of power to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) which delivers 8 GeV protons to the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) detectors. By building a new dedicated beam dump target station, and using the SBN detectors, a greater than an order of magnitude increase in search sensitivity for dark matter relative to the recent MiniBooNE beam dump search can be achieved. This modest cost upgrade to the BNB would begin testing models of the highly motivated relic density limit predictions and provide novel ways to test explanations of the anomalous excess of low energy events seen by MiniBooNE.

Data analysis in the ICARUS (SBN FD) Cosmic Ray Tagging system

When a cosmic ray particle collides with the upper atmosphere, it creates a shower of particles that transverse down to the Earth’s surface. These cosmogenic particles provide a challenging background in neutrino experiments. The Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program is composed of three Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) that will help us understand the elusive neutrino. Together with a Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) system, the ICARUS detector serves as the Far Detector in the SBN Program. The CRT surrounds the detector medium and tags incoming particles allowing us to combat the high flux of comic rays we experience at ICARUS. In this poster, I will show some of the first data analyses done with the fully commissioned CRT system, including studies using CRT timing information and CRT hit reconstruction.

Constraining Systematics at SBND to Reduce Uncertainties in SBN Oscillation Analyses

The Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is a crucial component of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program, situated 110 meters from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) target. This 112-ton Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) Near Detector is optimally positioned to investigate the potential existence of an additional flavor of neutrino through neutrino oscillation. Due to its proximity to the BNB target, SBND is uniquely positioned to receive a high rate of un-oscillated neutrino events. This setup offers a valuable opportunity to examine exclusive channels, thereby enhancing our understanding of various neutrino interaction modes, aiding in the understanding and mitigation of various sources of uncertainties. By fully utilizing the detector's capabilities, we aim to mitigate significant uncertainties in neutrino oscillation studies, primarily those related to neutrino interactions and flux. Achieving a deeper understanding of these uncertainties and controlling them with near detector data is essential. In this poster I will present an SBND event selection to control these uncertainties for the SBN oscillation analyses.

Latest Results from the ICARUS Experiment at the SBN Program

The ICARUS Collaboration is now entering its fifth year of continuing operations of the 760-ton liquid argon T600 detector. The T600 was overhauled at CERN after operations at the LNGS underground laboratory in Italy and moved to its present location at FNAL - as part of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program - where it successfully completed its commissioning phase in June 2022. At FNAL ICARUS collects neutrino interactions from both the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and off-axis from the Main Injector Neutrino beam (NuMI). To date, ICARUS has accumulated approximately $7.5\cdot 10^20$ protons on target (POT) with the BNB and about $6.2\cdot 10^20$ POT with NuMI. Within the SBN program ICARUS will search for evidence of short-baseline oscillations, potentially explained by eV-scale sterile neutrinos, jointly with the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND). In addition, ICARUS is performing stand-along oscillation searches in disappearance mode and measuring neutrino cross sections on argon with both the BNB and NuMI beams. It is also performing searches for additional Beyond the Standard Model signatures. Preliminary results from the ICARUS experiment, using data from the BNB and NuMI neutrino beams, will be presented.

Search for muon neutrino disappearance with multi-topologically splitted Inclusive events at SBN

The Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab searches for signatures of sterile neutrinos with mass-squared splittings at the O(1) eV2 scale, motivated by anomalies previously reported by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments. We present a search for such signatures using the muon neutrino disappearance channel. This analysis exploits the large statistics of fully inclusive charged-current interactions collected by the SBND and ICARUS detectors to maximize sensitivity. The inclusive samples in both detectors are further subdivided into multiple exclusive topological channels, a strategy designed to enhance sensitivity by isolating differences in interaction-mode composition and reconstructed energy response. This multi-topology approach represents a novel analysis technique within SBN, enabling improved constraints on systematic uncertainties arising from neutrino flux, interaction modeling, and detector response. We will present comparisons of data with detailed predictions incorporating a comprehensive treatment of systematic uncertainties and constraints on the systematics obtained by the multi-topology method.

The electronic set-up for the scintillation light detection system of ICARUS-SBN at Fermilab

The ICARUS-T600 Liquid Argon (LAr) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is presently used as the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program at Fermilab (USA) to search for a possible sterile neutrino signal with the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB). We discuss a light detection system, based on 360 Hamamatsu R5912-MOD Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs), which has been realized to detect vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons produced after the passage of ionizing particles in LAr. High performance electronics allows recording of the PMT signals and provides a fast discrimination for the exploitation of the scintillation light for trigger purposes. This system is fundamental for the TPC operation, contributing to the trigger system and for the 3D reconstruction of events.

Commissioning of the trigger system for the ICARUS T600 LAr-TPC detector in SBN Program

The ICARUS experiment at Fermilab is the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino Program (SBN), aimed at studing the neutrino oscillation to find a fourth type of neutrino, called sterile neutrino. A key component for this detector is the trigger system, which aims to identify and isolate the physical interactions from the background events. In this framework my internship program was dedicated to the development of trigger logic and trigger inhibit mechanism in order to select the genuine neutrino interaction and to guarantee a correct functioning of the readout system. These two steps, that represent a part of the commissioning of the trigger system, were implemented with LabVIEW Software. The obtained results are a fundamental step towards a succesful activation of the detector in the next few months.

Electron Neutrino Selection for Neutrino Oscillation Searches in the SBN Program

The Short- Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Pprogram at Fermilab employs a near detector, SBND, and a far detector, ICARUS, to search for baseline-dependent changes to the measure muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance and disappearance from the muon neutrino-dominated Booster Neutrino Beam flux. The use of the same liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) technology in both detectors and the same neutrino beam enables a systematically well-constrained oscillation measurement, by leveraging the high statistics of O(10 million) neutrino interactions expected at SBND through 2027 to constrain flux and cross-section systematics. In this poster, we present high-statistics, high-purity electron neutrino selections in SBND and ICARUS and related electron shower energy calibration measurements in SBND enabled by the SPINE deep learning-based particle reconstruction framework. Furthermore, we discuss how these samples can enable high sensitivity to '3+1' sterile neutrino oscillations in a combined fit accounting for systematic uncertainties and correlations.

Machine Learning-Based Anomaly Detection for PMT Data Quality Monitoring in the SBN and DUNE

Maintaining high-quality detector data is essential for achieving the scientific objectives of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program at Fermilab. Current data quality monitoring (DQM) procedures rely primarily on threshold-based metrics and manual inspection of detector monitoring plots, making the detection of subtle or gradually developing anomalies both time-consuming and dependent on expert interpretation. This project developed and evaluated a machine-learning workflow for automatically identifying anomalous photomultiplier tube (PMT) channels in the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) using optical-hit amplitude data. A Python-based analysis program was developed to process ROOT files, extract statistical features describing individual PMT amplitude distributions, and generate feature vectors for anomaly detection. These features were used to train an Isolation Forest model using data representing normal detector operation. The trained model was subsequently applied to independent detector runs to identify channels exhibiting statistically unusual behavior relative to the learned reference response. To support expert interpretation, the workflow generated complementary diagnostic products, including anomaly score distributions, normalized amplitude comparisons, decision-tree visualizations, and principal component analysis (PCA) projections. This project demonstrated the feasibility of integrating unsupervised machine learning into detector data-quality monitoring and developed a complete workflow for automated PMT performance assessment to aid expert-driven review. Beyond its technical contributions, the VFP appointment fostered a research collaboration between Aurora University and Fermilab and provided direct workforce development benefits by training the visiting faculty member in detector-scale machine-learning methods that are now being incorporated into undergraduate coursework and research. The methodology developed here provides a foundation for future applications to ProtoDUNE and other liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detectors, contributing to ongoing efforts to improve detector reliability, reduce manual monitoring requirements, and enable scalable data quality monitoring for future large-scale neutrino experiments, including the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).
