Science with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT)

Use of the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) to study the energetics and dynamics of the solar atmosphere is described. Studies include the origin and evolution of the Sun's magnetic field, the structure of solar subsurface convection, the heating of the outer solar atmosphere, and sources of the solar wind in the lower lying regions of the outer atmosphere. To achieve the scientific goals of the SOT, it is necessary to observe features in the solar atmosphere on the scale of a typical photon mean-free-path in continuum radiation and also of the hydrodynamic or density scale-height. The 1.3 m telescope, of a Gregorian configuration, achieves close to 0.1 arcsec angular resolution on the Sun in visible and ultraviolet wavelengths.

Relative Lifetimes of Several Space Liquid Lubricants Using a Vacuum Spiral Orbit Tribometer (SOT)

A vacuum spiral orbit rolling contact tribometer (SOT) was used to determine the relative lifetimes of several unformulated space liquid lubricants. The lubricants tested included a synthetic hydrocarbon (Pennzane 2001 A), three perfluoropolyethers (Krytox 143AC, Fomblin Z25, and Brayco 815Z), three silahydrocarbons (a tri, a tetra, and a penta) and a polyalphaolefin (Nye PAO-100). The SOT simulates the ball motions in an angular contact bearing and tribochemically degrades microgram quantities of lubricant. Test failure is determined when a preset friction coefficient is exceeded. Relative lifetime (orbits/micro-g) is defined as the number of ball orbits to failure divided by the amount of lubricant on the ball. Conditions included 10 to 200 rpm rotational speed, approximately 50 micro-g lubricant, an initial vacuum < 1.3x10(exp -6) Pa, room temperature (approximately 23 C), a mean Hertzian stress of 1.5 GPa, and 440 C stainless steel specimens. Lubricated lifetimes from longest to shortest were Pennzane 2001 A, the silahydrocarbons and the PAO-100, 143AC, ZI-5, and then 815Z. Relative lifetimes compare favorably to full-scale vacuum gimbal bearing tests. The effect of varying the mean Hertzian stress on the lifetime of some of the lubricants was examined.

SOT: A rapid prototype using TAE windows

The development of the window interface extension feature of the Transportable Applications Executive (TAE) is discussed. This feature is being used to prototype a space station payload interface in order to demonstrate and assess the benefits of using windows on a bit mapped display and also to convey the concept of telescience, the control and operation of space station payloads from remote sites. The prototype version of the TAE with windows operates on a DEC VAXstation 100. This workstation has a high resolution 19 inch bit mapped display, a keyboard and a three-button mouse. The VAXstation 100 is not a stand-alone workstation, but is controlled by software executing on a VAX/8600. A short scenario was developed utilizing the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) as an example payload. In the scenario the end-user station includes the VAXstation 100 plus an image analysis terminal used to display the CCD images. The layout and use of the prototype elements, i.e., the root menu, payload status window, and target acquisition menu is described.

A New Apparatus to Evaluate Lubricants for Space Applications: The Spiral Orbit Tribometer (SOT)

Lubricants used in space mechanisms must be thoroughly tested prior to their selection for critical applications. Traditionally, two types of tests have been used: accelerated and full-scale. Accelerated tests are rapid, economical, and provide useful information for gross screening of candidate lubricants. Although full-scale tests are more believable, because they mimic actual spacecraft conditions, they are expensive and time consuming. The spiral orbit tribometer compromises between the two extremes. It rapidly determines the rate of tribochemically induced lubricant consumption, which leads to finite test times, under realistic rolling/pivoting conditions that occur in angular contact bearings.

Herbaceous Feedstock 2022 State of Technology Report

The U.S. Department of Energy promotes production of advanced liquid transportation fuels from lignocellulosic biomass by funding fundamental and applied research that advances the state of technology (SOT). As part of its involvement in this mission, Idaho National Laboratory completes an annual SOT report for nth-plant and 1st-plant herbaceous biomass feedstock logistics. The purpose of the SOT is to provide the status of feedstock supply system technology development for herbaceous biomass to biofuels relative to technical targets and cost goals from specific design cases, based on data and experimental results. Although conventional feedstock supply systems form the backbone of the emerging biofuels industry, they have limitations that restrict widespread implementation on a national scale. To meet the demands of the future industry, the feedstock supply system must shift from the conventional system to what has been termed “advanced” supply systems. In advanced designs, a distributed network of aggregation and processing centers, termed “depots,” are employed near the points of biomass production (i.e., the field or forest) to reduce feedstock variability and produce feedstocks of a uniform format, moving toward biomass commoditization. The 2022 Herbaceous SOT is part of a vision of achieving an implemented advanced feedstock supply system, which produces a stable, tradable commodity at the decentralized distributed depot. It utilizes feedstock fractionation by incorporating technologies that can separate the biomass into its anatomical fractions (leaves, husks, stems and cobs) to reduce impurities and produce fractions that satisfy downstream quality considerations. By using a series of air classification steps, this strategy can reduce the extrinsic ash in corn stover and produce enriched tissue fractions that can be blended to a conversion specification or converted individually in optimized biochemical conversion campaigns. Additionally, a majority of the leaves (which do not meet the quality specification) are separated out early and can be supplied to alternate markets. The 2022 Herbaceous SOT incorporates an advanced biomass fractionation and processing system to produce pellets enriched tissues from three-pass corn stover. The resulting enriched pellets are delivered to the biorefinery individually where they can be blended to a specification or converted in campaigns where the conditions are optimized for each tissue. Unused fractions can be sent to a a midstream market or to a different conversion process that is better suited to their properties to offset the cost of the delivered feedstock. The main benefits from the proposed system can be summarized as: (1) $6.86/dry ton (2016$) lower cost for the air classification due to elimination of the requirement to discard the high ash lights fraction; (2) $1.56/dry ton lower delivered cost by selling the unsuitable leaf fraction into the feed market as a midstream co-product (assuming a selling price that is 11% higher than their cost of production); (3) 0.98% increase in carbohydrate content (from 60.16% to 61.14%); and (4) 0.97% decrease in ash content (from 6.00% to 5.03%) compared to the 2021 Herbaceous SOT. Overall, the 2022 nth-plant Herbaceous SOT predicts a modeled delivered feedstock cost of $78.64/dry ton (2016$) if it is assumed that the enriched leaf fraction is sold at its production cost; this is a slight increase of $0.43/dry ton increase from the 2021 Herbaceous SOT nth-Supply case cost. The increased cost derived from a $0.38/dry ton increase in transportation and handling cost to procure more biomass (to replace the enriched leaf fraction that was not delivered to the biorefinery. The total preprocessing cost was $0.27/dry ton higher than the 2021 result because of updates to energy consumption, purchasing price and dry matter loss data for the rotary shear ($3.00/dry ton increase) and the pelleting mill ($4.52/dry ton increase). The data utilized were generated in pilot-scale tests in the Biomass Feedstock National User Facility (BFNUF) at INL and at Forest Concepts, including tests for rotary shear and pelleting of the air classified fractions. A greenhouse gas emissions analysis was performed by Argonne National Laboratory using the most up to date version of the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation model (GREET®). The analysis showed an increase of 17.34 kg CO2e/dry ton from the 2021 SOT (67.71 kg CO2e/ton in the 2021 Herbaceous SOT to 85.05 kg CO2e/ton in the 2022 Herbaceous SOT). The net increase is primarily attributed to increased energy consumption in pelleting mill.

Woody Feedstock 2022 State of Technology Report

The U.S. Department of Energy promotes production of advanced liquid transportation fuels from lignocellulosic biomass by funding fundamental and applied research that advances the state of technology (SOT). As part of its involvement in this mission, Idaho National Laboratory completes an annual SOT report for n th -plant and 1 st -plant woody biomass feedstock logistics. The purpose of the SOT is to provide the status of feedstock supply system technology development for woody biomass to biofuels relative to technical targets and cost goals from specific design cases, based on data and experimental results. Conventional feedstock supply systems need to be modified to meet the demands of conversion pathways, specifically to have the ability to adjust the quality of the raw biomass materials. Advanced systems incorporate innovative methods of material handling, preprocessing and supply chain configuration. In advanced designs, variability of the raw biomass can be reduced to produce feedstocks of a uniform format, moving toward biomass commoditization. Against this backdrop, the 2022 Woody SOT for low-ash woody feedstocks utilizes feedstock fractionation by incorporating technologies that can separate the biomass into its anatomical fractions (wood, bark, needle, and extrinsic ash) to reduce impurities and attempt to maximize the retention of usable fractions that satisfy downstream quality considerations. By using a series of air classification steps, this strategy can reduce the extrinsic ash in forest residues, separate out a majority of the incoming needles (which can be supplied to alternate markets), and maximize the retention of whitewood in the usable fraction. The fractionated forest residues are then mixed with clean-pine chips in a 50-50 blend to prepare the feedstock for the desired conversion pathway. The n th -plant analysis estimated the delivered cost for the feedstock at $\$$69.23/dry ton (2016$\$$) which represents a $\$$6.64/dry ton decrease compared to the cost estimate of the 2021 Woody SOT supply system for low-ash woody feedstocks. The quality requirements in the 2022 Woody SOT were identical to those of the 2021 Woody SOT at = 1.00 wt % ash and = 50.51 wt% carbon. The cost savings derive primarily from reductions in dry matter losses during air classification. The GHG emissions for the n th -plant analysis were estimated at 178.39 kg CO2e/dry ton compared to 178.71 kg CO 2 e/dry ton in the 2021 Woody SOT, a decrease of 0.32 kg CO2e/dry ton. The small change stems from an increase in emissions attributed to preprocessing and slightly larger savings in emissions from transportation. In the 1 st -plant analysis of the 2022 Woody SOT system, the average throughput was estimated to be approximately 2,128 dry tons/day or 96.51% of the name plate capacity. During the simulation the daily throughput ranged from 1,090 dry tons/day to 2,200 dry tons/day, or 49.43% to 99.75% of the daily nameplate capacity. After the year of operation 722,403 tons of processed feedstock were produced in total without regard to quality considerations (99.64% of the annual nameplate capacity). The variability in throughput was primarily caused by equipment failures in the system. Regular failures, downtime caused by routine maintenance per manufacturer guidelines, contributed to a majority 62.50% of failures and 62.60% of downtime. Failures due to wear were the other cause of disruption within the system, impacting the rotary shear and orbital screen and accounting for 37.50% of the failures and 37.40% of the total downtime. Ultimately the system was on stream for 87.84% during the simulation period, which is only 2.16 percentage points below the nth-plant assumption for on-stream time. The production cost of the system averaged $\$$71.66/dry ton. The costs ranged from a minimum of $\$$71.23/dry ton to a maximum of $\$$2,115.30/dry ton. When dry matter losses (disposed low-quality fractions as well as other losses such as in grinders) were considered the costs increased to an average of $\$$75.11/dry ton with a minimum of $\$$74.69/dry ton and a maximum of $\$$2,136.86/dry ton...

An unsupervised machine learning based approach to identify efficient spin-orbit torque materials

Materials with large spin–orbit torque (SOT) hold considerable significance for many spintronic applications because of their potential for energy-efficient magnetization switching. Unfortunately, most of the existing materials exhibit an SOT efficiency factor that is much less than unity, requiring a large current for magnetization switching. The search for new materials that can exhibit an SOT efficiency much greater than unity is a topic of active research, and only a few such materials have been identified using conventional approaches. In this paper, we present a machine learning-based approach using a word embedding model that can identify new results by deciphering non-trivial correlations among various items in a specialized scientific text corpus. We show that such a model can be used to identify materials likely to exhibit high SOT and rank them according to their expected SOT strengths. The model captured the essential spintronics knowledge embedded in scientific abstracts within various materials science, physics, and engineering journals and identified 97 new materials to exhibit high SOT. Among them, 16 candidate materials are expected to exhibit an SOT efficiency greater than unity, and one of them has recently been confirmed with experiments with quantitative agreement with the model prediction.

Strongly heat-assisted spin–orbit torque switching of a ferrimagnetic insulator

Ferrimagnetic insulators promise low-power and high-speed spintronic applications, thanks to their insulating nature and fast dynamics near compensation points. In a ferrimagnetic insulator/heavy metal heterostructure, we investigate field- and current-induced magnetization switching at various temperatures and observe distinct magnetization switching behaviors owing to spin-orbit torque (SOT) and heating effect. We have realized SOT switching across the magnetization compensation temperature and discovered that the SOT switching is strongly heat-assisted: the temperature is always above the compensation temperature while the SOT switching happens in our case. Moreover, we show that the SOT efficiency is strongly magnetization-dependent by characterizing the current dependence of SOT efficiency and explaining the anomalous SOT switching back phenomena in the presence of a titled external field. Our results reveal the critical role of Joule heating on the dynamics of magnetic insulators and pave the way for the application of spintronic devices based on magnetic insulators.

Outcome analysis of individualized vestibular rehabilitation protocols

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcome of vestibular rehabilitation protocols in subjects with peripheral vestibular disorders compared with normal and abnormal control subjects. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study using repeated measure, matched control design. Subjects were solicited consecutively according to these criteria: vestibular disorder subjects who had abnormal results of computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) sensory organization tests (SOTs) 5 and 6 and underwent rehabilitation; vestibular disorder subjects who had abnormal results of SOTs 5 and 6 and did not undergo rehabilitation; and normal subjects (normal SOTs). SETTING: Tertiary neurotology clinic. SUBJECTS: Men and women over age 18 with chronic vestibular disorders and chief complaints of unsteadiness, imbalance, and/or motion intolerance, and normal subjects. INTERVENTIONS: Pre- and post-rehabilitation assessment included CDP, vestibular disability, and activities of daily living questionnaires. Individualized rehabilitation plans were designed and implemented to address the subject's specific complaints and functional deficits. Supervised sessions were held at weekly intervals, and self-administered programs were devised for daily home use. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: CDP composite and SOT scores, number of falls on CDP, and self-assessment questionnaire results. RESULTS: Subjects who underwent rehabilitation (Group A) showed statistically significant improvements in SOTs, overall composite score, and reduction in falls compared with abnormal (Group B) control groups. Group A's performances after rehabilitation were not significantly different from those of normal subjects (Group C) in SOTs 3 through 6, and close to normal on SOTs 1 and 2. Subjects in Group A also reported statistically significant symptomatic improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Outcome measures of vestibular protocol physical therapy confirmed objective and subjective improvement in subjects with chronic peripheral vestibular disorders. These findings support results reported by other investigators.

Spin–orbit torques in structures with asymmetric dusting layers

Current-induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures have emerged as an efficient method for magnetization switching with applications in nonvolatile magnetic memory and logic devices. However, experimental realization of SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization requires an additional inversion symmetry breaking, calling for modifications of the conventional SOT heterostructures. In this work, we study SOTs and deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetization by inserting different asymmetric dusting layers at the heavy metal/ferromagnet interface. Similar to the previous works with lateral structural asymmetry, we study the emergence of current-induced perpendicular effective magnetic fields (H z eff ). By examining three different material combinations of heavy metal/dusting layers (W/IrMn, Pt/IrMn, and W/Ta), we shed light on the origins of H z eff ; we show that H z eff is generically created in all the studied asymmetric structures, has a close correlation with the interfacial magnetic anisotropy, and is independent of the signs of spin Hall angles of the materials. Furthermore, we show that the induction of H z eff enables field-free deterministic SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization. Our results can be used in designing SOT heterostructures for practical applications in nonvolatile technologies.

Late Paleozoic Evolution of the Anadarko Basin: Implications for Laurentian Tectonics and the Assembly of Pangea

Abstract Interplay between marginal and intraplate late Paleozoic tectonics in southeastern Laurentia is a subject of debate. In southern Laurentia, intraplate deformation has been attributed to combinations of compressive forces from orogenic belts in the west, southwest, and southeast. While left‐lateral transpression is generally an accepted mechanism for formation of uplifts in the Southern Oklahoma Aulacogen (SOA), to date no studies have explained the driving mechanisms of these kinematics. Here, we analyze the Southern Oklahoma Transpressional System (SOTS), a ∼500 km long ∼50 km wide fault zone that extends from the southeastern Laurentian margin into the plate interior along Cambrian lithospheric weaknesses inherited from the SOA. We use a compilation of published studies to present detailed, time‐integrated sedimentary thickness maps of SOTS‐related basins. We combine these maps with a new interpretation of three 2D seismic reflection lines to constrain timing and kinematics of all major late Paleozoic SOTS fault zones. We show that the SOTS kinematics evolved from contraction to left‐lateral strike‐slip during Mississippian‐Pennsylvanian time. Tectonic activity and fault kinematics in the SOTS are explained by a model in which a remnant ocean basin closed diachronously from northeast to southwest along the Southern Appalachian and Ouachita‐Marathon orogens. Left‐lateral transpression during diachronous closure of the Rheic oceanic basin along the Ouachita‐Marathon margin is related to rotation of the stress field due to changes in slab‐pull and eastward drift of Laurentia toward Gondwana. We speculate that the SOTS acted in part as a STEP (subduction‐transfer edge propagator) fault that followed the pre‐existing SOA.

Giant field-like torque by the out-of-plane magnetic spin Hall effect in a topological antiferromagnet

Abstract Spin-orbit torques (SOT) enable efficient electrical control of the magnetic state of ferromagnets, ferrimagnets and antiferromagnets. However, the conventional SOT has severe limitation that only in-plane spins accumulate near the surface, whether interpreted as a spin Hall effect (SHE) or as an Edelstein effect. Such a SOT is not suitable for controlling perpendicular magnetization, which would be more beneficial for realizing low-power-consumption memory devices. Here we report the observation of a giant magnetic-field-like SOT in a topological antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn, whose direction and size can be tuned by changing the order parameter direction of the antiferromagnet. To understand the magnetic SHE (MSHE)- and the conventional SHE-induced SOTs on an equal footing, we formulate them as interface spin-electric-field responses and analyzed using a macroscopic symmetry analysis and a complementary microscopic quantum kinetic theory. In this framework, the large out-of-plane spin accumulation due to the MSHE has an inter-band origin and is likely to be caused by the large momentum-dependent spin splitting in Mn 3 Sn. Our work demonstrates the unique potential of antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals in overcoming the limitations of conventional SOTs and in realizing low-power spintronics devices with new functionalities.

The Solar Optical Telescope /SOT/

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) is a 1-m class, high resolution solar telescope which NASA plans to operate on the Shuttle Spacelab during the mid and late 1980's. SOT will provide resolution down to 0.1 arcsec, and can therefore be used to solve many problems of solar atmosphere structure and dynamics. In particular, SOT should provide definite data on (1) the source of the sun's magnetic field, (2) the amount of power in waves generated in the photosphere, (3) the heating of the chromosphere, and (4) the local and global mass and energy balance in the solar transition region. The SOT Scientific Working Group will help plan, develop, and update the overall scientific plan for the SOT, as well as make recommendations with regard to the SOT project, instrumentation optimization, and scientific data management.

Fine pointing of the Solar Optical Telescope in the Space Shuttle environment

Instruments requiring fine (i.e., sub-arcsecond) pointing, such as the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT), must be equipped with two-stage pointing devices, coarse and fine. Coarse pointing will be performed by a gimbal system, such as the Instrument Pointing System, while the image motion compensation (IMC) will provide fine pointing. This paper describes work performed on the SOT concept design that illustrates IMC as applied to SOT. The SOT control system was modeled in the frequency domain to evaluate performance, stability, and bandwidth requirements. The two requirements of the pointing control, i.e., the 2 arcsecond reproducibility and 0.03 arcsecond rms pointing jitter, can be satisfied by use of IMC at about 20 Hz bandwidth. The need for this high bandwidth is related to Shuttle-induced disturbances that arise primarily from man push-offs and vernier thruster firings. A block diagram of SOT model/stability analysis, schematic illustrations of the SOT pointing system, and a structural model summary are included.

Magnetic Switching in Monolayer 2D Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors via Spin‐to‐Spin Conversion

Abstract The integration of 2D van der Waals (vdW) magnets with topological insulators or heavy metals holds great potential for realizing next‐generation spintronic memory devices. However, achieving high‐efficiency spin–orbit torque (SOT) switching of monolayer vdW magnets at room temperature poses a significant challenge, particularly without an external magnetic field. Here, it is shown field‐free, deterministic, and nonvolatile SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization in the monolayer, diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Fe‐doped MoS 2 (Fe:MoS 2 ) at up to 380 K with a current density of ≈7 × 10 4 A cm −2 . The in situ doping of Fe into monolayer MoS 2 via chemical vapor deposition and the geometry‐induced strain in the crystal break the rotational switching symmetry in Fe:MoS 2 , promoting field‐free SOT switching by generating out‐of‐plane spins via spin‐to‐spin conversion. An apparent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) loop shift at a zero in‐plane magnetic field verifies the existence of z spins in Fe:MoS 2 , inducing an antidamping‐like torque that facilitates field‐free SOT switching. This field‐free SOT application using a 2D ferromagnetic monolayer provides a new pathway for developing highly power‐efficient spintronic memory devices.
