Flexible, low-cost silicon solar cell arrays

Silicon solar cell arrays are pressure-bonded to flexible backing and protected by fluorinated ethylene propylene cover in one mechanized operation. Arrays packaged by this method are flexible, lightweight, insulated, breakage resistant and less expensive.

Improved multispectral solar cell array

Solar-collector system projects oval-shaped color-band images onto solar cells designed to be most efficient at specific wavelength. Image size can be altered by changing width of reflecting mirror of power of lens. Image intensity is thus kept at optimum level, preventing cells from overheating.

Development of flight ready fifty-micron-thick silicon solar cell array module technology

The development of ultrathin silicon solar cell array modules from initial design to flight testing is discussed. Three 80-cell modules were subjected to the thermal soak test, the LEO thermal cycle test, and the solar array flight experiment, and six 48-cell welded modules were evaluated in the geosynchronous orbit thermal cycle test. It is observed that the electrical performance of the modules was not affected by the different environmental conditions. The automatic assembly of the cell modules, in particular the welding and solar cell glassing operation, is described. The specific power capabilities of Kapton, Kapton-Kevlar-Kapton, Kapton-graphite-Kapton, and Kapton-graphite-aluminum honeycomb-graphite solar array designs are assessed.

Status of wraparound contact solar cells and arrays

Solar cells with wraparound contacts provide the following advantages in array assembly: (1) eliminate the need for discretely formed, damage susceptible series tabs; (2) eliminate the n gap problem by allowing the use of uniform covers over the entire cell surface; (3) allow a higher packing factor by reducing the additional series spacing formly required for forming, and routing the series tab; and (4) allow the cell bonding to the interconnect system to be a single-side function wherein series contacts can be made at the same time parallel contracts are made.

Solar cell array design handbook - The principles and technology of photovoltaic energy conversion

Photovoltaic solar cell array design and technology for ground-based and space applications are discussed from the user's point of view. Solar array systems are described, with attention given to array concepts, historical development, applications and performance, and the analysis of array characteristics, circuits, components, performance and reliability is examined. Aspects of solar cell array design considered include the design process, photovoltaic system and detailed array design, and the design of array thermal, radiation shielding and electromagnetic components. Attention is then given to the characteristics and design of the separate components of solar arrays, including the solar cells, optical elements and mechanical elements, and the fabrication, testing, environmental conditions and effects and material properties of arrays and their components are discussed.

Development of a lightweight body-mounted solar cell array with a high power to weight ratio.

Three lightweight solar cell arrays have been fabricated with a high power-to-weight ratio. These arrays incorporate resistance welded interconnections, improved antireflection coating on the solar cell and lightweight substrates. Two of the substrates were constructed of magnesium with different structural geometry, while the third substrate was conventional aluminum honeycomb. All arrays utilized thin solar cells having a titanium-palladium-silver contact system and an antireflection coating of titanium oxide. The cells were welded with silver plated molybdenum interconnections. The two arrays having magnesium substrates exhibited a power/weight of 70.4 W/kg (32 W/lb.) and 81 W/kg (36.8 W/lb.), while the conventional array demonstrated a power/weight of 45.2 W/kg (20.6 W/lb.).

Silicon-fiber blanket solar-cell array concept

Proposed economical manufacture of solar-cell arrays involves parallel, planar weaving of filaments made of doped silicon fibers with diffused radial junction. Each filament is a solar cell connected either in series or parallel with others to form a blanket of deposited grids or attached electrode wire mesh screens.
