International aerospace review; Proceedings of the First International Aerospace Symposium, Le Bourget, Seine-Saint-Denis, France, June 2, 3, 1981

The status of aerospace industrial development in various countries is summarized, and specific areas of current and future progress are discussed. The first Shuttle astronauts recount details of the flight and performance of the initial Columbia mission and an attempt to assess the importance of the Shuttle as a milestone in transportation systems is presented. ESA space activities are reviewed, including the impact of space programs on European industries and employment. Attention is also given to Japanese and Chinese space programs. The evolution of communications satellites is traced and projections are made for near-term satellite requirements to be incorporated in the construction of Intelsat VI. Finally, advances in production of military jets and helicopters are considered, along with candidate alternate fuel systems to replace petroleum products.

Rainy Lake wrench zone: An example of an Archaean subprovince boundary in northwestern Ontario

The Superior Province of the Canadian Shield comprises an alternation of subprovinces with contrasting lithological, structural and metamorphic styles. Rocks of the Rainly Lake area form a fault bounded wedge between two of these subprovinces, the Wabigoon granite-greenstone terrain to the north and the Quetico metasedimentary terrain to the south. The Quetico and Seine River-Rainy Lake Faults bound this wedge within which interpretation of the stratigraphy has been historically contentious. In the eastern part of the wedge, volcanic rocks and coeval tonalitic sills are unconformably overlain by fluviatile conglomerate and arenite of the Seine Group; in the western part of the wedge, metamorphosed wacke and mudstone of the Coutchiching Group are cut by granodioritic plutons. The Coutchiching Group has previously been correlated with the Seine Group and with the turbiditic Quetico metasediments of the Quetico Subprovince and these correlations are the cornerstone of earlier tectonic models which relate the subprovinces. The structural geology of the Rainy Lake area is characterized by attributes which compare favourably with the known characteristics of dextral wrench or 'transpressive zones based both on experimental data and natural examples. Much of this deformation involved the Seine Group, the youngest stratigraphic unit in the area, and predates the emplacement of late-to-post-tectonic granodioritic plutons for which radiometric data indicate a Late Archean age.

The FRALIT teledetection program, using the ERTS-A satellite, for the oceanic littoral of France

There are no author-identified significant results in this report. The French Atlantic Littoral program, utilizing data from the ERTS-1 satellite, is considered. It involves teledetection of the French shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean and English Channel. A description is given of the ERTS-1 orbit and the satellite itself, including the attitude control system, and the data acquisition and transmission equipment. The geographic extent of the area covered by the program is delineated and the subjects studied are enumerated. These include the geomorphology, pedology, hydrology, and vegetation of the maritime marshes; sedimentology, morphology, and hydrology of the intertidal zones; and transport of material in suspension to the mouths of the Seine, the Loire, and the Gironde as a part of the coastal waters study.

Making Stronger Twine With Matched Strands

Higher tensil strength achieved with same production equipment. Strong twine made by using spools in one of two-step manufacturing process. Three primary strands twisted together in opposite direction to form threeply twine. Technique used successfully in manufacture of safety netting with 600- to 700-lb (2,700-to 3,100-N) tensil strength and 60-ton (54 x 10 to third power kg) tuna seine with area of 86 acres (3.5 x 10 to fifth power m2). Increase in tensil strength of completed twine found experimentally 10 to 12 percent.

Catamaran Nets

West Coast Netting, Inc.'s net of Hyperester twine, is made of three strands of fiber twisted together by a company-invented sophisticated twisting machine and process that maintain precisely the same tension on each strand. The resulting twine offers higher strength and improved abrasion resistance. The technology that created the Hyperester supertwine has found spinoff applications, first as an extra-efficient seine for tuna fishing, then as a capture net for law enforcement agencies. The newest one is as a deck for racing catamarans. Hyperester twine net has been used on most of the high performance racing catamarans of recent years, including the America's Cup Challenge boats. They are tough and hold up well in the continual exposure to sunlight and saltwater.

Immersive Simulations and Engineering Environment (iSEE): Improving Fidelity of Virtual Reality Simulations

The Immersive Simulation and Engineering Environment (iSEE) provides Kennedy Space Center (KSC) with accurate Human Systems Integration (HSI) analysis of the stresses on a human body incurred from physical work, along with accessibility and reach factors. Human Factors engineers can observe the simulations conducted by iSEE and work with the gathered data to help make the working environment at KSC safer. The software that runs the HSI analysis, however, provides users with a low fidelity virtual environment. Previously, this led to the addition and implementation of other iSEE programs that were capable of higher-fidelity simulations. The difficulties of streamlining the workflow in the lab with these new programs is currently being addressed.
