Electric Vehicle Standards – Grid Service Capabilities: Evaluation of IEEE 2030.13, SAE J3072, ISO 15118-2, ISO 15118-20, OCPP, IEC 61850-7-420, IEEE 2030.5, and OpenADR

This report examines a selection of standards associated with vehicle-grid-integration. The standards will be evaluated on their support for electric vehicles to provide/participate in component distributed energy resource grid services. Challenges associated with the deployments of the standards will also be discussed.

V2G AC Standards Support at NREL

This slide deck will guide participants through the landscape of V2G AC standards, development statuses of them, and explain the support of NREL and NREL's evaluation plans that leverage the real hardware and solution offered by private industry. This slide deck will be presented during a panel session that "will examine the readiness of North American V2G AC standards for broader market deployment, contrasting it with behind-the-meter applications such as vehicle-to-home. Panelists will address status of the V2G-AC standards for North America including UL 1741 SC, SAE J3072, ISO 15118-20 Am 1 and the new UL 1741 SB CRD. With V2G-AC momentum building, this session offers a timely opportunity for the industry to engage in candid dialogue on the progress of standardizing V2G AC in the evolving energy and mobility landscape."

Cybersecurity Certification Requirements for Distributed Energy Resources: A Survey of SunSpec Alliance Standards

This survey paper explores the cybersecurity certification requirements defined by the SunSpec Alliance for Distributed Energy Resource (DER) devices, focusing on aspects such as software updates, device communications, authentication mechanisms, device security, logging, and test procedures. The SunSpec cybersecurity standards mandate support for remote and automated software updates, secure communication protocols, stringent authentication practices, and robust logging mechanisms to ensure operational integrity. Furthermore, the paper discusses the implementation of the SAE J3072 standard using the IEEE 2030.5 protocol, emphasizing the secure interactions between electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) for functionalities like vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities. This research also examines the SunSpec Modbus standard, which enhances the interoperability among DER system components, facilitating compliance with grid interconnection standards. This paper also analyzes the existing SunSpec Device Information Models, which standardize data exchange formats for DER systems across communication interfaces. Finally, this paper concludes with a detailed discussion of the energy storage cybersecurity specification and the blockchain cybersecurity requirements as proposed by SunSpec Alliance.

UL 1741SC Conformance Development, Evaluation, and Proposal [Slides]

V2G AC is a type of grid interconnection by mobile battery that transforms an EV into a DER with the potential to stabilize the grid and lower costs for electricity. UL 1741SC is a critical new standard to enable grid interconnection of V2G AC-capable vehicles, by defining requirements for V2G AC-intended EVSEs as a gatekeeper between the grid and the EV to support grid safety, such as through redundant voltage trip (namely oversight). EVSE manufacturers need a clear set of conformance test cases and criteria by which to evaluate their equipment and confirm the compliance with UL 1741SC, so that the EVSEs performs as intended for the grid safety. Hence, NLR identified necessary conformance tests and performed the tests identified to understand the maturity.
