Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements and Evaluation of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC [Slides]

This presentation covers neutron capture and transmission measurements and evaluation of 54 Fe (Iron) at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute (RPI) Linear Accelerator (LINAC). Presentation conclusions find that 54 Fe is near its conclusion, covariance matrix generation is needed for both experiments before data is made available and released (Completion by April 2023). RPI will be conducting a full Resolved Resonance Region (RRR) evaluation following release of data (Completion by September 2023). Additionally, the neutron beam imager shows promise in providing an easy way to align samples in the most intense part of the neutron beam and there will be a new evaluation that will offer improvements in crit safety, shielding, and stellar applications.

Fast Neutron Evaluations for Advanced Lead Systems [Slides]

This presentation touches on fast neutron evaluations for advanced lead systems. This lecture covers project goals to evaluate lead (Pb) isotopes with a focus on improving predictive capabilities of fast systems. Additionally, the project sets out to benchmark available critical and shielding experiments with sensitivity to Pb and utilize RPI Quasi-Differential Scattering experiment for scattering reactions. This project will perform Resolved Resonance Region (RRR) and fast region evaluations for natural Pb isotopes with differential data on EXchange FORmat for experimental numerical nuclear reaction data (EXFOR) and ultimately will submit evaluations to the ENDF/B-VIII.1 library.

Methodology for physics-informed generation of synthetic neutron time-of-flight measurement data

Accurate neutron cross section data are a vital input to the simulation of nuclear systems for a wide range of applications from energy production to national security. The evaluation of experimental data is a key step in producing accurate cross sections. There is a widely recognized lack of reproducibility in the evaluation process due to its artisanal nature and therefore there is a call for improvement within the nuclear data community. This can be realized by automating/standardizing viable parts of the process, namely, parameter estimation by fitting theoretical models to experimental data. This automation effort could greatly benefit from a synthetic data resource. This work leverages problem-specific physics, Monte Carlo sampling, and a general methodology for data synthesis to generate unlimited, labelled experimental cross-section data that is statistically indistinguishable to the observed data. Heuristic and, where applicable, rigorous statistical comparisons to observed data support this claim. The demonstration is based on/limited to transmission measurements at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and energy-differential cross sections in the resolved resonance region (RRR). An open-source software is published alongside this article that executes the complete methodology to produce high-utility synthetic datasets. The goal of this work is to provide an approach and corresponding tool that will allow the evaluation community to begin exploring more data-driven, ML-based solutions to long-standing challenges in the field.

New Measurements to Resolve Discrepancies in Evaluated Model Parameters of 181 Ta

To resolve discrepancies in evaluated cross sections among major nuclear data libraries, energy-differential neutron transmission and radiative capture yield of 181 Ta were measured from 0.15 to 100 keV using multiple sample thicknesses. The new measurements provide resolution such that the resolved resonance region (RRR) can be evaluated up to at least 2.5 keV and the unresolved resonance region can be evaluated up to at least 100 keV. The transmission and capture yield measurements were modeled using resonance parameters from three major libraries to assess the predictive capability of each. It was found that JENDL-5.0 performed best in the RRR. Because of the poor performance of the U.S. ENDF/B evaluation, it is recommended that ENDF/B be reevaluated for 181 Ta.

The URR is generally located in the neutron cross section intermediate energy region. The URR is specifically located after the resolved resonance region (RRR) ends, but before the fast (smooth) region begins.

R-matrix Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation of 140,142 Ce

Oak Ridge National Laboratory completed the resolved resonance region (RRR) evaluation of the two most abundant cerium isotopes, 140 Ce (88.45%) and 142 Ce (11.11%), as requested by the US Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. These evaluations are based on recent high-resolution transmission and capture measurements performed on nat Ce and highly enriched 142 Ce samples at the JRC-Geel Linear Accelerator facility, as well as measured thermal constants available from the EXFOR database. Starting from the resonance parameters of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library followed by a preliminary R-matrix analysis, an updated set of resonance parameters and corresponding covariance information were derived by fitting these measured data using the Reich–Moore approximation of the R -matrix theory, as implemented in the SAMMY code system. The 140 Ce RRR upper energy limit was kept at 200 keV, whereas the 142 Ce resonance region was extended from 13 to 26 keV. Updated statistical properties were obtained for the new evaluations and compared to those derived from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library. The new evaluation work improved some of the discrepancies found in previous work, such as the capture resonance integral and stellar Maxwellian-averaged cross sections. These integral quantities were mainly derived from the fit of the latest measured data, especially the neutron capture yield data for 142 Ce isotope.

Bayesian Monte Carlo Evaluation Framework for Imperfect Data and Models [Abstract]

Nuclear data evaluation methods conventionally make the following assumptions: prior and posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) of all model parameters and data are normal (Gaussian); the linear approximation is sufficiently accurate for minimization of a cost function (even for non-linear models); and that both the model (of, e.g., neutron cross section) and experimental data (including their covariance data) are perfect. These assumptions are inherent to the well-known generalized linear least squares (GLLS) minimization method commonly used for evaluations of resolved resonance region (RRR) neutron cross sections. However, these assumptions are often not justified due to the presence of non-normal PDFs, non-linear models (e.g. R -matrix formalism), and inherent imperfections in data and models (e.g. discrepant data sets, discrepancies between the previous evaluation and newly measured data, or imperfect covariance data). We remove the said assumptions in a mathematical framework of Bayes’ theorem, and implement it using the Metropolis-Hastings Monte Carlo method. Parameters of a new kind are introduced to parameterize inherent imperfections, e.g. , any discrepancies between the theoretical model and measured data. These new parameters enable evaluators to quantify their expert judgement about any discrepancies or imperfections in a reproducible manner. We demonstrate the framework with an ongoing evaluation of 233 U in the eV region using the ENDF-B/VIII library and transmission data measured by Guber, et al. , and compare the posterior parameters to those obtained by conventional evaluation methods.

On the Uranium and Plutonium Nuclear Data Evaluations [Slides]

This presentation provides overviews of uraniums, 233 U and 235 U, plutonium research including motivations, current status in ENDF/B-VIII.0, the inclusion of sub-thermal data, and the inclusion of LANL ratio capture-to-fission data. Additionally, the preliminary fit of Mosby’s data as reported, fluctuating neutron multiplicities, uncertainty in evaluated libraries, and experimental effects are also presented. The presentation concludes by providing a summary of plans for the U and Pu evaluation work.

Evaluation and Validation of the n+ 63,65 Cu Cross Sections [Slides]

This presentation discusses the objective of the research which is to update n+ 63,65 Cu cross section evaluations with recently measured data to resolve discrepancies in benchmark performance. It also discusses the models used which are the R -matrix analysis and the analysis of angular distribution coefficients. Additionally, the validation methods that were used are discussed, including the Rez shielding benchmark and the ICSBEP criticality benchmarks. In conclusion, he n+ 63,65 Cu cross sections have been updated via R-matrix analysis up to 100 keV. An increased average capture cross section and the adoption of experimentally based Legendre coefficients lead to improved performance in reactivity benchmarks. In the fast region, the adoption of the JENDL-4.0 cross sections above 4.0 MeV improves the performance in shielding benchmarks. Ultimately, the n 63,65 Cu ENDF files will be submitted to ENDF/B-VIII.1.

140,142 Ce Neutron Cross Section Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation [Slides]

ORNL has completed new RRR evaluations for 140,142 Ce. A lack of integral measurements made validation difficult, but the difference from Kadonis values suggests that more investigation of capture cross section is warranted. The complete file (with updated File2 and File32) has been submitted to NNDC repository for inclusion in next release of ENDF. A sponsor report publication is in progress.

Resolved resonance region evaluations of n+ 206,207,208 Pb for fast spectrum applications

Resolved resonance region evaluations of the major isotopes of natural lead, 206 Pb, 207 Pb, 208 Pb, have been per formed to support the development of Generation IV reactors. In this study, validation of nuclear data for lead fast reactors was performed with simulations of shielding benchmarks, integral critical benchmarks, and quasi-differential scattering measurements. Sensitivity analyses of these systems showed that elastic scattering reactions above 100 keV were the dominant reactions driving system performance. The resolved resonance regions (RRRs) of the lead isotopes extend past 100 keV, making the RRR an ideal starting point to evaluate lead cross sections. Since the R-matrix requires knowledge of bound, distant, and observed resonances, it was necessary to evaluate from 10 -5 eV up to the respective limit of the RRR. The 208 Pb RRR evaluation was extended to 1.5 MeV in order to obtain resonance parameters used to calculate new elastic scattering angular distributions up to 1.5 MeV. Resonance parameter uncertainties and covariance were generated using the R-matrix code SAMMY. The new RRR parameters show a direct improvement to the scattering kernel below 1.5 MeV which in turn greatly improves fast critical experiments over ENDF/B-VIII.0.

Proposed Updates to Pu Evaluation for ENDF/B-VIII.0β 2 [Slides]

This presentation shows current status of in ENDF/B-VIII.0 and ENDF/B-VIII.0β 1 Pu evaluations. With a focus on the Pu thermal solutions (PST) and sanity check on fast metal assemblies (PMF). Pu ENDFβ 1 file in the low-energy region included updates in RRR (up to 2.5 keV), TNC and PFNS. Discussed are improvements over ENDF/B-VIII.0 in the C/E benchmarks (PST 81 cases) with preliminary ν p and cross section covariance generation for the resolved resonance energy range up to 2.25 keV. Highlighted are proposed updates for ENDFβ 2 with an extension of the RRR evaluation up to 5 keV, inclusion of Mosby’s data including proper resolution function (thanks to Marian J.), and a particular focus on η energy dependence from thermal up to 10 eV with the impact of the capture-to-fission ratio at 0.29 eV. This presentation concludes with an updated ν p and cross section covariance generation for the resolved resonance energy range up to 5 keV. And additional validation to test performance at about 2 eV and in the keV region.
