Relative Hausdorff distance for network analysis

Similarity measures are used extensively in machine learning and data science algorithms. The newly proposed graph Relative Hausdorff (RH) distance is a lightweight yet nuanced similarity measure for quantifying the closeness of two graphs. In this work we study the effectiveness of RH distance as a tool for detecting anomalies in time-evolving graph sequences. We apply RH to cyber data with given red team events, as well to synthetically generated sequences of graphs with planted attacks. In our experiments, the performance of RH distance is at times comparable, and sometimes superior, to graph edit distance in detecting anomalous phenomena. Furthermore, our results suggest that in appropriate contexts, RH distance has advantages over more computationally intensive similarity measures.

A Linear-Time Algorithm and Analysis of Graph Relative Hausdorff Distance

Graph similarity metrics serve far-ranging purposes across many domains in data science. As graph datasets grow in size, scientists need comparative tools that capture meaningful differences, yet are lightweight and scalable. Graph Relative Hausdorff (RH) distance is a promising, recently proposed measure for quantifying degree distribution similarity. In spite of recent interest in RH distance, little is known about its properties. Here, we conduct an algorithmic and analytic study of RH distance. In particular, we provide the first linear-time algorithm for computing RH distance, analyze examples of RH distance between families of graphs, and prove several analytic results concerning the range, density, and extremal behavior of RH distance values.

Robust Matching of Wavelet Features for Sub-Pixel Registration of Landsat Data

For many Earth and Space Science applications, automatic geo-registration at sub-pixel accuracy has become a necessity. In this work, we are focusing on building an operational system, which will provide a sub-pixel accuracy registration of Landsat-5 and Landsat-7 data. The input to our registration method consists of scenes that have been geometrically and radiometrically corrected. Such pre-processed scenes are then geo-registered relative to a database of Landsat chips. The method assumes a transformation composed of a rotation and a translation, and utilizes rotation- and translation-invariant wavelets to extract image features that are matched using statistically robust feature matching and a generalized Hausdorff distance metric. The registration process is described and results on four Landsat input scenes of the Washington, D.C. area are presented.

A deep learning approach for semantic segmentation of unbalanced data in electron tomography of catalytic materials

In computed TEM tomography, image segmentation represents one of the most basic tasks with implications not only for 3D volume visualization, but more importantly for quantitative 3D analysis. In case of large and complex 3D data sets, segmentation can be an extremely difficult and laborious task, and thus has been one of the biggest hurdles for comprehensive 3D analysis. Heterogeneous catalysts have complex surface and bulk structures, and often sparse distribution of catalytic particles with relatively poor intrinsic contrast, which possess a unique challenge for image segmentation, including the current state-of-the-art deep learning methods. To tackle this problem, we apply a deep learning-based approach for the multi-class semantic segmentation of a γ-Alumina/Pt catalytic material in a class imbalance situation. Specifically, we used the weighted focal loss as a loss function and attached it to the U-Net’s fully convolutional network architecture. We assessed the accuracy of our results using Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), recall, precision, and Hausdorff distance (HD) metrics on the overlap between the ground-truth and predicted segmentations. Our adopted U-Net model with the weighted focal loss function achieved an average DSC score of 0.96 ± 0.003 in the γ-Alumina support material and 0.84 ± 0.03 in the Pt NPs segmentation tasks. We report an average boundary-overlap error of less than 2 nm at the 90th percentile of HD for γ-Alumina and Pt NPs segmentations. The complex surface morphology of γ-Alumina and its relation to the Pt NPs were visualized in 3D by the deep learning-assisted automatic segmentation of a large data set of high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) tomography reconstructions.

Intra- and inter-observer variability in breast tumour bed contouring and the controversial role of surgical clips

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the visualization of surgical clips (SCs) on the same set of planning computed tomography (CT) of breast cancer (BC) patients influences agreement on tumour bed (TB) delineation. Planning CT (CT{sub orig}) of 47 BC patients with SCs to visualize the TB was processed in order to blur SCs and create a virtual CT (CT{sub mod}). Four radiation oncologists (ROs, 2 juniors and 2 seniors) contoured TB on both the CT sets. Centre of mass distance (CMD), percentage overlap as Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), surface distance as average Hausdorff distance (AHD) and TB volume size were analysed. The intra-observer variability when contouring TB with and without SCs was statistically significant (p-values = 0.016, 0.0002 and ≪ 0.001 for CMD, AHD and DSC, respectively). Junior ROs showed worse reproducibility compared to seniors. The median DSC was < 0.7. The inter-observer variability with and without SCs was statistically significant (p < 0.001) for all metrics, with an increase of 48.7% in DSC and decrease of 50.7% and 57.1% in CMD and AHD, respectively, as relative median values, when SCs were visible. Regarding TB volumes, when SCs were visible, the intra-observer analysis revealed that 3/4 ROs delineated larger volumes, especially juniors. The inter-observer analysis showed that, in presence of visible SCs, the difference in TB volume among all the ROs fell from statistically significant to borderline significance (p = 0.052). TB contouring is confirmed to be an observer-dependent task. SCs decreased the intra and inter-observer variability but the overall agreement between ROs remained low.

An objective inter-comparison of trash mark constellations generated by manual and automated detection methods

Trash marks are unintentional markings observed on printed, scanned, or photocopied documents that result from permanent defects or transient material in office machines and can be used for source attribution of questioned documents. Trash mark examinations have been in use in forensic laboratories for decades, yet the method remains relatively untested and relies on training, experience, and anecdotal information to support its validity. Herein this study generated and harnessed objective data to empirically test one of the foundational theories for assessing the origin of photocopied documents: provided trash marks are present in sufficient quantity and/or quality, no two machines will exhibit a constellation of trash marks that is indistinguishable from another. In this project, objective trash mark location and size data was generated for 50 known photocopiers using both a traditional and a novel, automated method. Inter-machine comparisons were conducted using a novel variant of the Hausdorff distance algorithm to generate a quantitative assessment of how similar or different the 2450 pairs of trash mark constellations were from one another. This study found that each of the machines bearing one or more trash marks exhibited objective differences in their trash mark constellations, ultimately providing support for the tested hypothesis
