Crystal Orientation Independent Strong TERS Response in Anisotropic ReS2 on Gold

Rhenium disulfide (ReS2) crystallizes in a distorted 1T' lattice with triclinic symmetry arising from Re–Re dimerization, which produces in-plane anisotropic properties and a dense set of Raman-active modes with mixed atomic displacements. Unlike far-field Raman spectroscopy, which shows strong polarization and orientation dependence, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) probes out-of-plane Raman tensor components. Here we use 785 nm (1.58 eV) gap-mode TERS to investigate monolayer to four-layer thick ReS2 crystals.. TERS maps and averaged spectra reveal that all modes remain invariant under 90° rotation of the crystal, and the only thickness-dependent feature is the emergence of the multilayer breathing mode. These results demonstrate that TERS yields a crystal-orientation-independent Raman response in ReS2 and provides direct access to Raman tensor components that are not easily accessible in conventional far-field measurements.

Nanoscale Ferroelectric Control of Novel Electronic States in Layered Two-Dimensional Materials (Final Report)

In this DOE Early Career project “Nanoscale Ferroelectric Control of Novel Electronic States in Layered Two-Dimensional Materials,” the PI’s group has combined ferroelectric field effect with nanoscale domain imaging and writing to design the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials, including graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides MoS2 and ReS2. The van der Waals materials have been prepared into field effect transistor (FET) devices with ferroelectric gates. Through domain patterning in a ferroelectric polymer PVDF-TrEF top-gate via conductive atomic force microscopy, the team has created programmable Schottky junctions in monolayer MoS 2 , where both barrier height and I-V rectifying polarity can be reconfigured. The transport anisotropy of monolayer to few-layer ReS 2 has been mapped out by defining the entire channel into an insulating state and creating nanoscale conducting paths along different directions through domain writing in the ferroelectric top-gate. The result shows that the conductivity along and perpendicular to the Re-chain can differ by >5.5x10 4 . Theoretical modeling points to the band origin of the transport anomaly and reveals the emergence of a flat band in few-layer ReS 2 . The interfacial epitaxial relation between ReS 2 and PVDF-TrFE further promotes the formation of close-packed, highly ordered PVDF-TrFE nanowires with width of 35 nm and 10 nm. Nonvolatile modulation of quantum Hall effect has been achieved in graphene FETs with a ferroelectric oxide Ba 0.4 Sr 0.6 TiO 3 back-gate. Scattering from the remote surface optical phonon in Ba 0.4 Sr 0.6 TiO 3 limits the room temperature mobility of graphene to be about 3x10 4 cm 2 /Vs. Steep-slope switching has been achieved in MoS 2 FETs back-gated by polycrystalline Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 , which signals a static-state negative capacitance mode without involving an additional dielectric layer. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies show that the sub-threshold swing can be well correlated with the domain wall density in Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 . The team also observes an unconventional filtering effect of the second harmonic generation response at the MoS 2 /Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 heterointerface, which can be accounted for by the alignment between one of the polar axes of MoS 2 and the chiral dipole rotation at the surface of domain wall in Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 . The research supported by this DOE grant has significantly advanced the fundamental understanding and functional design of ferroelectric/2D van der Waals heterostructures for their implementation towards energy applications.

Theoretical Studies of N2-broadened Half-widths of H2O Lines Involving High j States

Based on the properties of the energy levels and wave functions of H2O states, one can categorize H2O lines into individually defined groups such that within the same group, the energy levels and the wave functions associated with two paired lines have an identity property while those associated with different pairs have a similarity property. Meanwhile, by thoroughly analyzing processes used to calculate N2-broadened half-widths, it was found that the 'Fourier series' of W(sup a)(sub L(sub 1))(sub K(sub 1))(sub K(sub 1)) (t; j(sub f) T(sub f) and W(sup a)(sub L(sub 1))(sub K(sub 1))(sub K(sub 1)) (t; j(sub i) T(sub i), and a factor P(sub 222) (j(sub f) T(sub f) j(sub i) T(sub i)) are the key items in the Robert-Bonamy formalism to distinguish contributions to ReS2(r(sub c)) among different transitions of j(sub f) T(sub f) - j(sub i). However, these items are completely determined by the energy levels and the wave functions associated with their initial and final states and they must bear the latter's features as well. Thus, it becomes obvious that for two paired lines in the same group, their calculated half-widths must be almost identical and the values associated with different pairs must vary smoothly as their ji values vary. Thus, the pair identity and the smooth variation rules are established within individual groups of lines. One can use these rules to screen half-width data listed in HITRAN and to improve the data accuracies.

Assembly of Close–Packed Ferroelectric Polymer Nanowires via Interface–Epitaxy with ReS 2

The flexible, transparent, and low-weight nature of ferroelectric polymers makes them promising for wearable electronic and optical applications. To reach the full potential of the polarization-enabled device functionalities, large-scale fabrication of polymer thin films with well-controlled polar directions is called for, which remains a central challenge. The widely exploited Langmuir–Blodgett, spin-coating, and electrospinning methods only yield polymorphous or polycrystalline films, where the net polarization is compromised. Here, an easily scalable approach is reported to achieve poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) thin films composed of close-packed crystalline nanowires via interface-epitaxy with 1T'-ReS 2 . Upon controlled thermal treatment, uniform P(VDF-TrFE) films restructure into about 10 and 35 nm-wide (010)-oriented nanowires that are crystallographically aligned with the underlying ReS 2 , as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies confirm the out-of-plane polar axis of the nanowire films and reveal coercive voltages as low as 0.1 V. Reversing the polarization can induce a conductance switching ratio of >10 8 in bilayer ReS 2 , over six orders of magnitude higher than that achieved by an untreated polymer gate. Lastly, this study points to a cost-effective route to large-scale processing of high-performance ferroelectric polymer thin films for flexible energy-efficient nanoelectronics.

Ultrafast One-Dimensional Peierls-Distortion Dynamics in 1⁢T′−Re⁢S 2 Revealed by 4D Electron Microscopy

Rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ), a prototypical 2D semiconductor with an anisotropic 1⁢T′ structure due to the pronounced Peierls distortion, has demonstrated great potential for polarization-dependent optoelectronics and photonics. Here, we report an ultrafast phase transition occurring within 1 ps, accompanied by a one-dimensional Peierls-distortion relaxation in 1⁢T′−ReS 2 revealed with combined 4D electron microscopy and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Upon femtosecond laser pulse excitation, the Re-Re dimerization morphology rapidly transforms from a diamond cluster to zigzag chains and persists for several nanoseconds. Here, this ultrafast Peierls-distortion relaxation is further verified by transient changes in optical anisotropy via polarization-dependent transient absorption spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations attribute this novel phase transition to strong correlation between Peierls distortion and impulsive photoexcited carrier doping, predicting a transient band-gap collapse. This Letter opens up an exciting avenue for ultrafast control of Peierls-distortion-induced anisotropy and the metal-insulator transition in 1⁢T′−ReS 2 .

Giant Transport Anisotropy in ReS 2 Revealed via Nanoscale Conducting-Path Control

The low in-plane symmetry in layered 1T'-ReS 2 results in strong band anisotropy, while its manifestation in the electronic properties is challenging to resolve due to the lack of effective approaches for controlling the local current path. In this work, we reveal the giant transport anisotropy in monolayer to four-layer ReS 2 by creating directional conducting paths via nanoscale ferroelectric control. By reversing the polarization of a ferroelectric polymer top layer, we induce conductivity switching ratio of >1.5×10 8 in the ReS 2 channel at 300 K. Characterizing the domain-defined conducting nanowires in an insulating background shows that the conductivity ratio between the directions along and perpendicular to the Re-chain can exceed 5.5×10 4 in monolayer ReS 2 . Theoretical modeling points to the band origin of the transport anomaly, and further reveals the emergence of a flat band in few-layer ReS 2 . Our work paves the path for implementing the highly anisotropic 2D materials for designing novel collective phenomena and electron lensing applications.
