Thermal cross section measurements at the RPI LINAC [Abstract]

Recently, a cold moderator was designed and developed for use at the RPI LINAC. This cold moderator proved to easily and safely couple to an existing neutron producing target, while enhancing neutron flux below 0.02 eV by cooling polyethylene down to 29 K. This cold moderator capability allowed for significantly improved counting statistics below 0.02 eV not previously possible due to a poor signal to background ratio. Additionally, testing was performed to characterize the energy resolution of the new cold moderator system and found the system easily capable of resolving resonances in Ta-181 at 4 and 10 eV, while also clearly resolving the Bragg edges found in Be metal below 0.01 eV. Following the design and development of a cold polyethylene moderator, a series of thermal total cross section measurements were performed for polyethylene, polystyrene, Plexiglas and yttrium hydride in the thermal region. These measurements serve to help validate thermal scattering law (TSL) evaluations in the 0.0006 – 20 eV energy range. For polyethylene and polystyrene, two sets of experiments were performed – one with the Enhanced Thermal Target (ETT) and another with the ETT plus the new cold moderator capability (ETTC). The yttrium hydride and Plexiglas measurements were only performed with the ETTC. The measurements for polyethylene help to validate the data processing methodology when using the ETTC, while extending the measured range of polyethylene down to 0.0007 eV. Two different Plexiglas, Plexiglas G and Plexiglas G-UVT, and two different concentrations of yttrium hydride, H/Y = 1.85 and 1.68, were measured. Overall, all materials had generally good agreement with their ENDF/B-VIII.0 TSL evaluations, though some discrepancies were noticed. In the case of the yttrium hydride, the high energy oscillations in the hydrogen cross section and the low energy Bragg edges in the yttrium cross section were clearly seen. These measurements represent the first total cross section measurements that encompass the entire thermal region from 0.0006 – 3 eV for polystyrene and yttrium hydride.

Thermal Cross Section Measurements At The RPI LINAC

Recently, a cold moderator was designed and developed for use at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Linear Accelerator (RPI LINAC). This cold moderator proved to easily and safely couple to an existing neutron producing target, while enhancing neutron flux below 0.02 eV by up to a factor of 8 by cooling polyethylene down to 29 K. Furthermore, following the design and development of a cold polyethylene moderator, a series of thermal total cross section measurements were performed for polyethylene, polystyrene, Plexiglas and yttrium hydride in the thermal region. These measurements serve to help validate thermal scattering law (TSL) evaluations in the 0.0005 – 1 eV energy range. Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements and Evaluation of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC [Slides]

This presentation covers neutron capture and transmission measurements and evaluation of 54 Fe (Iron) at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute (RPI) Linear Accelerator (LINAC). Presentation conclusions find that 54 Fe is near its conclusion, covariance matrix generation is needed for both experiments before data is made available and released (Completion by April 2023). RPI will be conducting a full Resolved Resonance Region (RRR) evaluation following release of data (Completion by September 2023). Additionally, the neutron beam imager shows promise in providing an easy way to align samples in the most intense part of the neutron beam and there will be a new evaluation that will offer improvements in crit safety, shielding, and stellar applications.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC

54 Fe radiative capture cross section and transmission measurements were conducted at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Center using an enriched 54 Fe sample in the keV energy region. 54 Fe is a constituent of natural iron, which is present in a large variety of nuclear grade materials. Therefore, it is important to have an accurate understanding of the cross sections of 54 Fe, which can be measured experimentally. In the time-of-flight measurements conducted at the LINAC, an array of four C 6 D 6 detectors surrounded the sample and radiative capture data were collected using a digital data acquisition system. Additionally, a Li-glass detector was used to collect transmission data using an analog data acquisition system. The radiative capture yield of the 54 Fe measurements were normalized to saturated resonances observed in Au and Ta to obtain an absolute capture yield. The preliminary capture yield and preliminary transmission obtained can be compared to evaluations and existing experimental data. Some disagreements were observed in prominent d-wave capture resonances observed in 54 Fe in the low-keV neutron energy region. Both sets of experimental data along with pre-existing datasets will greatly enhance RPI’s ability to perform resonance evaluation for 54 Fe up to roughly 1 MeV.

RPI LINAC refurbishment and upgrade project

The Electron Linear Accelerator at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was constructed in the late 1950s and started operation in 1961 [1]. The facility was designed and used primarily for measurements of Nuclear Data (ND) with emphasis on the resonance energy region. As such it was designed to produce short pulses of neutrons (5-5000 ns) and equipped with detection stations at different neutron flight path distances from the source (15 m-250 m). When the LINAC started operation it was one of the most powerful accelerators in the world for high energy-resolution measurements in the resonance region. The original LINAC with some upgrades is still in operation but no longer provides world class capabilities for measurements with short pulses. In 2011 discussions between the RPI ND group, Naval Reactors, and the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program about the future of the LINAC concluded that maintaining the capability to perform world-class nuclear data measurements at RPI was desirable. To that end, it was decided to refurbish the facility and upgrade the accelerator capabilities to enable high accuracy measurement in the resonance region with narrow neutron pulse and high electron beam power. Located at a major US technical university, this project provides a needed US nuclear data capability for both research and education, and also includes external users and industrial applications.

Enhancement of sub-thermal neutron flux through cold polyethylene

Total thermal neutron cross section measurements serve as the primary means of validation for thermal neutron scattering kernels, an important quantity for neutron transport calculations. In an effort to improve the quality of thermal neutron scattering kernels, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) designed and constructed a polyethylene based cold moderation system to enhance neutron flux below 10 meV when coupled with the Enhanced Thermal Target (ETT) at the RPI Gaerttner LINAC. The final design yielded an increase in sub-thermal neutron flux (below 10 meV) by a factor of 4.5 for a moderator temperature of 37.5 K relative to the ETT alone. A further increase to a factor of 6 is expected after a minor geometry modification and decrease in polyethylene temperature to 25 K. This novel capability will be used to conduct total thermal neutron cross section measurements from 0.0005–10 eV for different materials including moderator materials.
