Time-resolved RIXS experiment with pulse-by-pulse parallel readout data collection using X-ray free electron laser

Abstract Time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is one of the developing techniques enabled by the advent of X-ray free electron laser (FEL). It is important to evaluate how the FEL jitter, which is inherent in the self-amplified spontaneous emission process, influences the RIXS measurement. Here, we use a microchannel plate (MCP) based Timepix soft X-ray detector to conduct a time-resolved RIXS measurement at the Ti L 3 -edge on a charge-density-wave material TiSe 2 . The fast parallel Timepix readout and single photon sensitivity enable pulse-by-pulse data acquisition and analysis. Due to the FEL jitter, low detection efficiency of spectrometer, and low quantum yield of RIXS process, we find that less than 2% of the X-ray FEL pulses produce signals, preventing acquiring sufficient data statistics while maintaining temporal and energy resolution in this measurement. These limitations can be mitigated by using future X-ray FELs with high repetition rates, approaching MHz such as the European XFEL in Germany and LCLS-II in the USA, as well as by utilizing advanced detectors, such as the prototype used in this study.

Theory of Spin-Excitation Anisotropy in the Nematic Phase of FeSe Obtained From RIXS Measurements

Recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments have detected a significant high-energy spin-excitation anisotropy in the nematic phase of the enigmatic iron-based superconductor FeSe, whose origin remains controversial. We apply an itinerant model previously used to describe the spin-excitation anisotropy as measured by neutron scattering measurements, with magnetic fluctuations included within the RPA approximation. The calculated RIXS cross section exhibits overall agreement with the RIXS data, including the high energy spin-excitation anisotropy.

Advances in soft X-ray RIXS for studying redox reaction states in batteries

Redox (reduction and oxidation) chemistry provides the fundamental basis for numerous energy-related electrochemical devices. Detecting the electrochemical redox chemistry is pivotal but challenging because it requires independent probes of the cationic and anionic redox states at different electrochemical states. Here, the synchrotron-based soft X-ray mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) has recently emerged as a powerful tool for exploring such states in electrochemical devices, especially batteries. High-efficiency mRIXS covers the energy range of the absorption edge with the extra dimension of information on the emitted photon energies. In this frontier article, we review recent representative demonstrations of utilizing soft X-ray mRIXS for detecting the novel chemical state during electrochemical operation and for quantifying the cationic redox reactions through inverse partial fluorescence yield analysis (mRIXS-iPFY). More importantly, the non-divalent states of oxygen in electrodes involving oxygen redox reactions could be reliably captured by mRIXS, with its reversibility quantified by the intensity variation of the characteristic mRIXS feature through a super-partial fluorescence yield analysis (mRIXS-sPFY). These recent demonstrations inspire future perspectives on using mRIXS for studying the complex phenomena in energy materials, with both technical and scientific challenges in RIXS theory, in situ/operando experiments, and spatially resolved RIXS imaging.

Ultrafast renormalization of the magnetic continuum in the proximal Kitaev quantum spin liquid H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 by tr-RIXS [Invited]

We present the first circularly polarized non-resonant pump time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (tr-RIXS) experiment in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 , an iridium-based Kitaev system. Our calculations and experimental results are consistent with the modification of the low-energy magnetic excitations in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 only during illumination by the laser pulse. We discuss these results in a cooperative framework between the Floquet engineering of the exchange interactions and the dynamic renormalization of electron-electron correlations. However, the penetration length mismatch between the X-ray probe and laser pump and the intrinsic complexity of Kitaev magnets prevents us from unequivocally extracting towards which ground state H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 is driven. We outline possible solutions to these challenges for light-driven stabilization and observation of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid limit by RIXS.

Identification of a characteristic doping for charge order phenomena in Bi-2212 cuprates via RIXS

Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. Furthermore, to gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L 3 edge. As doping increases, the CO wavevector decreases, saturating near a commensurate value of 0.25 r.l.u. beyond a characteristic doping p c , where the correlation length becomes shorter than the apparent periodicity (4a 0 ). Such behavior is indicative of the fluctuating nature of the CO; and the proliferation of CO excitations in the superconducting state also appears strongest at p c , consistent with expected behavior at a CO QCP. Intriguingly, p c appears to be near optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature T c is maximal.

IRIXS Spectrograph: an ultra high-resolution spectrometer for tender RIXS

The IRIXS Spectrograph represents a new design of an ultra-high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer that operates at the Ru L 3 -edge (2840 eV). First proposed in the field of hard X-rays by Shvyd'ko [(2015), Phys. Rev. A, 91, 053817], the X-ray spectrograph uses a combination of laterally graded multilayer mirrors and collimating/dispersing Ge(111) crystals optics in a novel spectral imaging approach to overcome the energy resolution limitation of a traditional Rowland-type spectrometer [Gretarsson et al. (2020), J. Synchrotron Rad. 27, 538–544]. In combination with a dispersionless nested four-bounce high-resolution monochromator design that utilizes Si(111) and Al 2 O 3 (110) crystals, an overall energy resolution better than 35 meV full width at half-maximum has been achieved at the Ru L 3 -edge, in excellent agreement with ray-tracing simulations.

Probing the interplay between lattice dynamics and short-range magnetic correlations in CuGeO 3 with femtosecond RIXS

Investigations of magnetically ordered phases on the femtosecond timescale have provided significant insights into the influence of charge and lattice degrees of freedom on the magnetic sub-system. However, short-range magnetic correlations occurring in the absence of long-range order, for example in spin-frustrated systems, are inaccessible to many ultrafast techniques. Here, we show how time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is capable of probing such short-ranged magnetic dynamics in a charge-transfer insulator through the detection of a Zhang–Rice singlet exciton. Utilizing trRIXS measurements at the O K-edge, and in combination with model calculations, we probe the short-range spin correlations in the frustrated spin chain material CuGeO 3 following photo-excitation, revealing a strong coupling between the local lattice and spin sub-systems.

A design of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer for spatial- and time-resolved spectroscopy

The optical design of a Hettrick–Underwood-style soft X-ray spectrometer with Wolter type 1 mirrors is presented. The spectrometer with a nominal length of 3.1 m can achieve a high resolving power (resolving power higher than 10000) in the soft X-ray regime when a small source beam (<3 µm in the grating dispersion direction) and small pixel detector (5 µm effective pixel size) are used. Adding Wolter mirrors to the spectrometer before its dispersive elements can realize the spatial imaging capability, which finds applications in the spectroscopic studies of spatially dependent electronic structures in tandem catalysts, heterostructures, etc . In the pump–probe experiments where the pump beam perturbs the materials followed by the time-delayed probe beam to reveal the transient evolution of electronic structures, the imaging capability of the Wolter mirrors can offer the pixel-equivalent femtosecond time delay between the pump and probe beams when their wavefronts are not collinear. In combination with some special sample handing systems, such as liquid jets and droplets, the imaging capability can also be used to study the time-dependent electronic structure of chemical transformation spanning multiple time domains from microseconds to nanoseconds. The proposed Wolter mirrors can also be adopted to the existing soft X-ray spectrometers that use the Hettrick–Underwood optical scheme, expanding their capabilities in materials research.

Mapping resonant inelastic x-ray scattering onto electronic structure of iridium compounds

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is an indispensable tool that can selectively probe the electronic structure of active sites in energy conversion systems, for example, iridium oxides. However, decoding the RIXS spectra remains challenging due to its inherently complex many-body interactions. Here, we analyze Ir L 3 edge RIXS spectra of Ir, IrCl 3 , and IrO 2 , employing the joint density of states (JDOS) calculated directly from electronic band-structure calculations. The overall energy-loss features in the RIXS spectra are well reproduced by the JDOS, reaffirming the close correspondence between electron–hole excitations and RIXS spectra observed in prior studies. Intriguingly, the RIXS spectra above ∼4 eV in metallic Ir and IrO 2 follow a power-law behavior, 𝐼 RIXS ~Δ −𝑝 , where Δ is the energy loss and p is the associated power-law exponent. This is consistent with edge-singularity behavior commonly found in resonant X-ray scattering from metallic samples. Furthermore, orbital-projected JDOS enables a decomposition of the IrO 2 spectrum into specific dd transitions, providing a clear interpretation of orbital excitations and an efficient strategy for decoding RIXS spectra in iridium-based energy conversion systems.

Using photoelectron spectroscopy to measure resonant inelastic X-ray scattering: a computational investigation

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has become an important scientific tool. Nonetheless, conventional high-resolution (few hundred meV or less) RIXS measurements, especially in the soft X-ray range, require low-throughput grating spectrometers, which limits measurement accuracy. Here, the performance of a different method for measuring RIXS, i.e. photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of X-rays (PAX), is computationally investigated. This method transforms the X-ray measurement problem of RIXS to an electron measurement problem, enabling use of high-throughput, compact electron spectrometers. X-rays to be measured are incident on a converter material and the energy distribution of the resultant photoelectrons, the PAX spectrum, is measured with an electron spectrometer. A deconvolution algorithm for analysis of such PAX data is proposed. It is shown that the deconvolution algorithm works well on data recorded with ~0.5 eV resolution. Additional simulations show the potential of PAX for estimation of RIXS features with smaller widths. For simulations using the 3d levels of Ag as a converter material, and with 10 5 simulated detected electrons, it is estimated that features with a few hundred meV width can be accurately estimated in a model RIXS spectrum. For simulations using a sharp Fermi edge to encode RIXS spectra, it is estimated that one can accurately distinguish 100 meV FWHM peaks separated by 45 meV with 10 5 simulated detected electrons that were photoemitted from within 0.4 eV of the Fermi level.

A low noise CMOS camera system for 2D resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique to study quantum properties of materials in the bulk. A novel variant of RIXS, called 2D RIXS, enables concurrent measurement of the scattered X-ray spectrum for a wide range of input energies, improving on the typically low throughput of 1D RIXS. In the soft X-ray domain, 2D RIXS demands an X-ray camera system with small pixels, large area, high quantum efficiency and low noise to limit the false detection rate in long duration exposures. We designed and implemented a 7.5 Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS detector with 5 μm pixels and high quantum efficiency in the 200–1,000 eV X-ray energy range for the QERLIN 2D RIXS spectrometer at the Advanced Light Source. The QERLIN beamline and detector are currently in commissioning. The camera noise from in-situ 3 s long dark exposures is 7e - or less and the leakage current is 6.5 × 10 -3 e - /(pixel ∙ s). For individual 500 eV X-rays, the expected efficiency is greater than 75% and the false detection rate is ~1 × 10 -5 per pixel.

Effect of 3d/4p Mixing on 1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering: Electronic Structure of Oxo-Bridged Iron Dimers

1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (1s2p RIXS) has proven successful in the determination of the differential orbital covalency (DOC, the amount of metal vs ligand character in each d molecular orbital) of highly covalent centrosymmetric iron environments including heme models and enzymes. However, many reactive intermediates have noncentrosymmetric environments, e.g., the presence of strong metal-oxo bonds, which results in the mixing of metal 4p character into the 3d orbitals. This leads to significant intensity enhancement in the metal K-pre-edge and as shown here, the associated 1s2p RIXS features, which impact their insight into electronic structure. Binuclear oxo bridged high spin Fe(III) complexes are used to determine the effects of 4p mixing on 1s2p RIXS spectra. In addition to developing the analysis of 4p mixing on K-edge XAS and 1s2p RIXS data, this study explains the selective nature of the 4p mixing that also enhances the analysis of L-edge XAS intensity in terms of DOC. These 1s2p RIXS biferric model studies enable new structural insight from related data on peroxo bridged biferric enzyme intermediates. The dimeric nature of the oxo bridged Fe(III) complexes further results in ligand-to-ligand interactions between the Fe(III) sites and angle dependent features just above the pre-edge that reflect the superexchange pathway of the oxo bridge. Lastly, we present a methodology that enables DOC to be obtained when L-edge XAS is inaccessible and only 1s2p RIXS experiments can be performed as in many metalloenzyme intermediates in solution.

Stimulated resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in a solid

Abstract When materials are exposed to X-ray pulses with sufficiently high intensity, various nonlinear effects can occur. The most fundamental one consists of stimulated electronic decays after resonant absorption of X-rays. Such stimulated decays enhance the number of emitted photons and the emission direction is confined to that of the stimulating incident photons which clone themselves in the process. Here we report the observation of stimulated resonant elastic (REXS) and inelastic (RIXS) X-ray scattering near the cobalt L 3 edge in solid Co/Pd multilayer samples. We observe an enhancement of order 10 6 of the stimulated over the conventional spontaneous RIXS signal into the small acceptance angle of the RIXS spectrometer. We also find that in solids both stimulated REXS and RIXS spectra contain contributions from inelastic electron scattering processes, even for ultrashort 5 fs pulses. Our results reveal the potential and caveats of the development of stimulated RIXS in condensed matter.

Accessing metal-specific orbital interactions in C–H activation with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Photochemically prepared transition-metal complexes are known to be effective at cleaving the strong C–H bonds of organic molecules in room temperature solutions. There is also ample theoretical evidence that the two-way, metal to ligand (MLCT) and ligand to metal (LMCT), charge-transfer between an incoming alkane C–H group and the transition metal is the decisive interaction in the C–H activation reaction. What is missing, however, are experimental methods to directly probe these interactions in order to reveal what determines reactivity of intermediates and the rate of the reaction. Here, using quantum chemical simulations we predict and propose future time-resolved valence-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VtC-RIXS) experiments at the transition metal L-edge as a method to provide a full account of the evolution of metal–alkane interactions during transition-metal mediated C–H activation reactions. For the model system cyclopentadienyl rhodium dicarbonyl (CpRh(CO) 2 ), we demonstrate, by simulating the VtC-RIXS signatures of key intermediates in the C–H activation pathway, how the Rh-centered valence-excited states accessible through VtC-RIXS directly reflect changes in donation and back-donation between the alkane C–H group and the transition metal as the reaction proceeds via those intermediates. We benchmark and validate our quantum chemical simulations against experimental steady-state measurements of CpRh(CO) 2 and Rh(acac)(CO)2 (where acac is acetylacetonate). Our study constitutes the first step towards establishing VtC-RIXS as a new experimental observable for probing reactivity of C–H activation reactions. More generally, the study further motivates the use of time-resolved VtC-RIXS to follow the valence electronic structure evolution along photochemical, photoinitiated and photocatalytic reactions with transition metal complexes.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of Hund's and spin-orbit coupling in 5 d 2 double perovskites

𝐵 site ordered 5⁢𝑑 2 double perovskites (𝐴 2 ⁢𝐵⁢𝐵′⁢O 6 , 𝐵′ = 5⁢𝑑 2 ) display a remarkable range of physical properties upon variation of the chosen 𝐵 and 𝐵′ site ions. This sensitivity to chemical substitution reflects the delicate balance and profound impact of strong electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling in such systems. Here, we present rhenium 𝐿 2 and 𝐿 3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of two such physically dissimilar materials, Mott-insultating Ba 2⁢ Y⁢Re⁢O 6 and semiconducting Sr 2⁢ Cr⁢Re⁢O 6 . Despite these differences, our RIXS results reveal similar energy scales of Hund's (𝐽 𝐻 ) and spin-orbit coupling (𝜁) in the two materials, with both systems firmly in the intermediate Hund's coupling regime where 𝐽 𝐻 /𝜁∼1. However, there are clear differences in their RIXS spectra. The conductive character of Sr 2⁢ Cr⁢Re⁢O 6 broadens and obfuscates the atomic transitions within an electron-hole continuum, while the insulating character of Ba 2 ⁢Y⁢Re⁢O 6 results in sharp atomic excitations. This contrast in their RIXS spectra despite their similar energy scales reflects a difference in the itinerancy-promoting hopping integral and illustrates the impact of the local crystal environment in double perovskites. Finally, 𝐿 2 and 𝐿 3 edge analyses of the atomic excitations in Ba 2 ⁢Y⁢Re⁢O 6 reveal that the ordering of the low lying excited states is inverted compared to previous reports, such that the appropriate energy scales of Hund's and spin-orbit coupling are significantly modified. We present exact diagonalization calculations of the RIXS spectra at both edges which show good agreement with our results for new energy scales of 𝜁 = 0.290⁢(5)⁢eV and 𝐽 𝐻 = 0.38⁢(2)⁢eV [𝐽 𝐻 /𝜁 = 1.30⁢(5)].
