Rapid characterization of MSW and RDF feedstocks for waste-to-energy process using LIBS and ML techniques

The heterogeneity in the composition of municipal solid wastes (MSW) poses significant challenges in the production of biofuel and bioproducts. This research aims to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of waste analysis and characterization by introducing a fast characterization approach for MSW-derived refuse-derived fuels (RDF) by combining Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques. The approach combines data pre-processing of LIBS spectra of RDF, and the development of ML models trained on domain and theory-based spectral features for predicting process parameters. These models are adept at predicting key process parameters like High Heating Value (HHV), carbon content, and volatile matter. This approach can achieve an average RRMSE of 2.13% and R 2 of 0.98 or higher for all considered parameters on testing data. This work demonstrates significant potential for improving waste sorting, processing efficiency, and environmental compliance over traditional labor- and time-intensive laboratory waste analysis and characterization.

Towards Mitigating Electron Beam-Induced Damage in MOFs Using Low Dose Electron Microscopy for In-Situ Room-Temperature Measurements

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a versatile class of materials with applications in gas storage and separation, catalysis, and drug delivery [1]. Understanding their damage mechanisms in under various environmental conditions is crucial for optimizing performance and stability [2]. This study employs a combination of Length Structural Coherence (LSC) analysis in electron scattering and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) to elucidate the damage mechanisms in two representative MOFs. MIL101(Fe), and MIL101(Cr). Here, the primary objective is to reveal structural and chemical changes that occur under electron beam irradiation in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), both in the pristine state and during in-situ CO and CO 2 adsorption. By combining LSC in Radial Distribution Function (RDF) analysis with EELS, comprehensive insights into the nanoscale alterations are obtained and correlated to the electron dose rate.

cwru-sdle/CEMENTO

CEMENTO is a component python package of the larger SDLE FAIR application suite of tools for creating scientific ontologies more efficiently. This package provides functional interfaces for converting draw.io diagrams of ontologies into RDF triple file formats and vice versa. This package is able to provide term matching between reference ontology files and terms used in draw.io diagrams allowing for faster ontology deployment while maintaining robust cross-references.

FAIRLinked: Data FAIRification Tools for Materials Data Science

FAIRLinked is a software package created to support the FAIRification of materials science data, ensuring proper alignment with FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. It is built to be compatible with MDS-Onto, an ontology designed to capture the semantics of various types of materials data, enabling integration and sharing across different research workflows. The package is subdivided into three subpackages: InterfaceMDS, RDFTableConversion, and QBWorkflow. The first subpackage, InterfaceMDS allows users to search for terms using either string search or various filters, explore different domains and subdomains, and add terms to MDS-Onto. RDFTableConversion is used for serialization and deserialization of data from CSV into JSONLDs and vice versa in a way that captures the semantics of the data using MDS-Onto. Lastly, QBWorkflow is a serialization and deserialization workflow that incorporates RDF Data Cube vocabulary, useful for working with multidimensional datasets. By offering these packages, FAIRLinked lowers the barrier of creating FAIR, machine-actionable data for researchers in the materials science community.

Synergistic Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics Approach to Elucidate PNIPAM–Water Interaction Mechanisms

This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate interactions between water molecules and Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). DFT reveals preferential water binding sites, with enhanced binding energy observed in the linker zone. Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and electron localization function (ELF) analyses highlight the roles of hydrogen bonding and steric hindrance. MD simulations unveil temperature-dependent hydration dynamics, with structural transitions marked by changes in the radius of gyration (Rg) and the radial distribution function (RDF), aligning with DFT findings. Our work goes beyond prior studies by combining a DFT, QTAIM and MD simulations approach across different PNIPAM monomer-to-30mer structures. It introduces a systematic quantification of pseudo-saturation thresholds and explores water clustering dynamics with structural specificity, which have not been previously reported in the literature. These novel insights establish a more complete molecular-level picture of PNIPAM hydration behavior and temperature responsiveness, emphasizing the importance of amide hydrogen and carbonyl oxygen sites in hydrogen bonding, which weakens above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), resulting in increased hydrophobicity and paving the way for understanding water sorption mechanisms, offering guidance for future applications such as dehumidification and atmospheric water harvesting.
