Application of surface acoustic wave devices to radio telemetry

Three experimental Surface Acoustic Wave Resonators (SAWR) are developed and evaluated. A desired center frequency is obtained by correct spacing of the Inter-Digital Transducers (IDT). Transmitting and receiving IDT's must be close for adequate coupling and a sufficient number of reflectors are required to create a high quality standing wave. A review of oscillator theory is given and current technology evaluated.

Validation of Radio Frequency Telemetry Concept in the Presence of Biological Tissue-Like Stratified Media

In this paper we discuss a novel radio frequency (RF) telemetry concept for biomedical applications. The concept consists of a miniaturized spiral inductor/antenna for bio-MEMS sensors and an external pick-up antenna integrated into a handheld device. The measured relative signal strength in the presence of biological phantoms ranged from 5.9 to 7.5 dB for antenna separations of 5 and 10 cm. These relative signal strengths are easily measurable, therefore validating the RF telemetry concept for biomedical applications.

Radio Frequency Telemetry System for Sensors and Actuators

The present invention discloses and teaches apparatus for combining Radio Frequency (RF) technology with novel micro-inductor antennas and signal processing circuits for RF telemetry of real time, measured data, from microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensors, through electromagnetic coupling with a remote poweringheceiving device. Such technology has many applications, but is especially useful in the biomedical area.

The effect of partial coherence in receiving system noise temperature on array gain for telemetry and radio frequency carrier reception for receiving systems with unequal predetection signal-to-noise ratios

Signal to noise ratio improvement realized by arraying receiving systems or stations for coherent reception is reduced when some portion of the predetection noise is coherent in the array. This effect for arrayed receiving systems with unequal apertures including expected performance for selected planets of the solar system within the array beamwidth is examined.

RADIOBIOLOGY

Voyager mission telecommunication firsts

The communications breakthroughs achieved during the NASA Voyager mission are discussed. The dual-spacecraft mission to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and their moons and rings was launched in 1977 and completed interplanetary phase some 12 years later with the Voyager 2 Neptune encounter in August 1989. The radio telemetry, coding, and navigation equipment of the spacecraft are examined in detail. Firsts achieved in the radio science area are also discussed. These include the fact that it was the first mission specifically designed to obtain radio-science data. It had very exacting requirements for radio system stability, both at S- and X-bands, and for frequency and timing system stability, both flight and ground.

The question of the possibility of using Associative Computer Devices (ACD) for parallel adaptive discretization of multichannel telemetry information

The method of parallel adaptive discretization of data is considered the most promising and allows the effective compression algorithms to be used for high information-capacity radio telemetry systems. An associative computer device (ACD), i.e., parallel computers based on associative memory units (AMU), are recommended for realization of this method. A detailed discussion of the problems of application of AMU is followed by description of a particular ACD and its recommended use.

Control of Fan Blade Vibrations Using Piezoelectrics and Bi-Directional Telemetry

A novel wireless device which transfers supply power through induction to rotating operational amplifiers and transmits low voltage AC signals to and from a rotating body by way of radio telemetry has been successfully demonstrated in the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) Dynamic Spin Test Facility. In the demonstration described herein, a rotating operational amplifier provides controllable AC power to a piezoelectric patch epoxied to the surface of a rotating Ti plate. The amplitude and phase of the sinusoidal voltage command signal, transmitted wirelessly to the amplifier, was tuned to completely suppress the 3rd bending resonant vibration of the plate. The plate's 3rd bending resonance was excited using rotating magnetic bearing excitation while it spun at slow speed in a vacuum chamber. A second patch on the opposite side of the plate was used as a sensor. This paper discusses the characteristics of this novel device, the details of a spin test, results from a preliminary demonstration, and future plans.
