Materials Data on PtSe2 by Materials Project

PtSe2 is trigonal omega structured and crystallizes in the trigonal P-3m1 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one PtSe2 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. Pt4+ is bonded to six equivalent Se2- atoms to form edge-sharing PtSe6 octahedra. All Pt–Se bond lengths are 2.53 Å. Se2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent Pt4+ atoms.

Fast Exciton Diffusion in Monolayer PtSe2

Recently, 2D noble metal dichalcogenides have drawn considerable attention due to their thickness-tunable electronic and optical properties. However, the dynamical properties of photocarriers in these materials are less studied. In this report photocarrier dynamics in monolayer and bilayer PtSe 2 samples prepared by chemical vapor deposition are studied by transient absorption microscopy. Spatially and temporally resolved differential reflectance measurements yield room-temperature exciton lifetimes of 25 and 50 ps for monolayer and bilayer samples, respectively. The exciton diffusion coefficient in monolayer PtSe 2 is found to be as large as 48 cm 2 s -1 . This value is higher than exciton diffusion coefficients of most known monolayer semiconductors. The deduced exciton mobility is close to the theoretical limit of charge carrier mobility of monolayer PtSe 2 . The superior exciton transport property is unique to monolayers, as the exciton diffusion coefficient drops to 6.7 cm 2 s -1 in bilayers PtSe 2 . The novel exciton transport properties, along with its high air stability, make monolayer PtSe 2 an attractive material for ultrathin excitonic devices. These results provide insights on the exciton dynamic properties of 2D PtSe 2 and help develop fundamental understanding on the performance of various optoelectronic devices based on 2D PtSe 2 . .

To Substitute Rather Than Intercalate: Chimie douce Approach to Induce Ferromagnetism in Metastable Pt 0.8 M 0.2 Se 2 ( M = Cr, Co, Ni)

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials with exotic magnetic properties have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and data storage technologies. However, the limited availability of intrinsic 2D magnetic materials has driven efforts to induce and manipulate magnetism in otherwise nonmagnetic 2D systems through approaches such as chemical intercalation, defect engineering, and substitutional doping. Herein, we present a facile, chimie douce method for incorporating 3d transition metals (Cr, Co, and Ni) into the nonmagnetic PtSe 2 sublattice. This synthetic approach enables control over layer thickness of Pt 1–x M x Se 2 (M = Cr, Co, Ni) nanosheets by varying the M identity and annealing conditions. Comprehensive scattering and spectroscopic characterizations confirm the successful and homogeneous substitution of M atoms at the Pt site, rather than intercalation, and reveal a strong correlation between nanosheet thickness and the identity of the substituting metal. High-temperature annealing of the nanosheets promotes an irreversible transformation toward the bulk phase, allowing for detailed characterization of structural and magnetic properties. A case study of Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 reveals that nanosheet thickness plays a critical role in modulating local magnetic interactions. While Cr atoms in the as-synthesized few-layers-thick nanosheets exhibit predominantly short-range antiferromagnetic interactions, the emergence of short-range ferromagnetic exchange is revealed in the bulk material. Detailed ac susceptibility and remanent magnetization measurements further demonstrate that bulk Pt 0.8 Cr 0.2 Se 2 adopts a frustrated magnetic ground state with clear signatures of ferromagnetic cluster-glass behavior. The systematic investigation presented herein establishes a clear and robust protocol for the synthesis and in-depth characterization of 2D transition-metal-substituted PtSe2 materials with varying layer thickness and paves a path toward their realization in spintronic and magnetic device applications.

Transition metals of Pt and Pd on the surface of topological insulator Bi2Se3

Transition metal catalysts supported on topological insulators are predicted to show improved catalytic properties due to the presence of topological surface states, which may float up to the catalysts and provide robust electron transfer. However, experimental studies of surface structures and corresponding catalytic properties of transition metal/topological insulator heterostructures have not been demonstrated so far. Here, we report the structures, chemical states, and adsorption behaviors of two conventional transition metal catalysts, Pt and Pd, on the surface of Bi2Se3, a common topological insulator material. We reveal that Pt forms nanoparticles on the Bi2Se3 surface. Moreover, the interaction between Pt and surface Se is observed. Furthermore, thermal dosing of O2 onto the Pt/Bi2Se3 heterostructure leads to no oxygen adsorption. Detailed scanning tunneling microscopy study indicates that Pt transforms into PtSe2 after the thermal process, thus preventing O2 from adsorption. For another transition metal Pd, it exhibits approximate layer-island growth on Bi2Se3, and Pd–Se interaction is also observed. Our work provides significant insights into the behaviors of transition metals on top of a common topological insulator material and will assist in the future design of catalysts built with topological materials.

Ultrafast Interlayer Charge Transfer between Bilayer PtSe 2 and Monolayer WS 2

Interlayer charge transfer (CT) between PtSe 2 and WS 2 is studied experimentally. Layer-selective pump–probe and photoluminescence quenching measurements reveal ultrafast interlayer CT in the heterostructure formed by bilayer PtSe 2 and monolayer WS 2 , confirming its type-II band alignment. The CT facilitates the formation of the interlayer excitons with a lifetime of several hundred ps to 1 ns, a diffusion coefficient of 0.9 cm 2 s –1 , and a diffusion length reaching 200 nm. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the integration of PtSe 2 with other materials in van der Waals heterostructures with novel charge-transfer properties and help develop fundamental understanding on the performance of various optoelectronic devices based on heterostructures involving PtSe 2 .
