UM-PRS: An implementation of the procedural reasoning system for multirobot applications

The Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) is used in applications where predetermined situations might arise. The UM-PRS provides a reasoning system that represents robotic applications even in unpredictable domains, such as the robotic reconnaissance task domain outlined here. UM-PRS incorporates a changing context, rather than relying solely on a prearranged plan. The UM-PRS here provides representation important in the reasoning and interface between a mission plan and the executable map of an outdoor vehicle that changes its behavior based on what it comes in contact with in its environment. PRS is thus used in the dynamic control of such a vehicle, providing the basis for coordinating the joint task of multiple robotic vehicles by the their individual observations and representation.

Pulsar PRS 0656 + 14 - Period and spindown

Observations from various sources are used to explain the larger-than-expected period noted for pulsar 0656 + 14 on July 7, 1984 (Ashworth and Lyne, 1981). No indication of orbital motion was found, and most of the observations are consistent with a simple secular spindown. The derived period derivative of (54.3 + or - 1.3) x 10 to the -15th at epoch 2444300 is far greater than the previously reported value.

Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-Ray Timing of the Radio and Gamma-ray Quiet Pulsars PSR J1412+7922 and PRS J1849-0001

We present new timing and spectral analyses of PSR J1412+7922 (Calvera) and PSR J1849−0001, which are only seen as pulsars in X-rays, based on observations conducted with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. We obtain updated and substantially improved pulse ephemerides compared to previous X-ray studies, as well as spectra that can be well fit by simple blackbodies and/or a power law. Our refined timing measurements enable deeper searches for pulsations at other wavelengths and sensitive targeted searches by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo for continuous gravitational waves from these neutron stars. Using the sensitivity of LIGO’s first observing run, we estimate constraints that a gravitational wave search of these pulsars would be obtained on the size of their mass deformation and r-mode fluid oscillation.

Deep neural network improves the estimation of polygenic risk scores for breast cancer

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) estimate the genetic risk of an individual for a complex disease based on many genetic variants across the whole genome. Here, we compared a series of computational models for estimation of breast cancer PRS. A deep neural network (DNN) was found to outperform alternative machine learning techniques and established statistical algorithms, including BLUP, BayesA, and LDpred. In the test cohort with 50% prevalence, the Area Under the receiver operating characteristic Curve (AUC) were 67.4% for DNN, 64.2% for BLUP, 64.5% for BayesA, and 62.4% for LDpred. BLUP, BayesA, and LPpred all generated PRS that followed a normal distribution in the case population. However, the PRS generated by DNN in the case population followed a bimodal distribution composed of two normal distributions with distinctly different means. This suggests that DNN was able to separate the case population into a high-genetic-risk case subpopulation with an average PRS significantly higher than the control population and a normal-genetic-risk case subpopulation with an average PRS similar to the control population. This allowed DNN to achieve 18.8% recall at 90% precision in the test cohort with 50% prevalence, which can be extrapolated to 65.4% recall at 20% precision in a general population with 12% prevalence. Interpretation of the DNN model identified salient variants that were assigned insignificant p values by association studies, but were important for DNN prediction. These variants may be associated with the phenotype through nonlinear relationships.

Predicting Numbers of Problems in Development of Software

A method has been formulated to enable prediction of the amount of work that remains to be performed in developing flight software for a spacecraft. The basic concept embodied in the method is that of using an idealized curve (specifically, the Weibull function) to interpolate from (1) the numbers of problems discovered thus far to (2) a goal of discovering no new problems after launch (or six months into the future for software already in use in orbit). The steps of the method can be summarized as follows: 1. Take raw data in the form of problem reports (PRs), including the dates on which they are generated. 2. Remove, from the data collection, PRs that are subsequently withdrawn or to which no response is required. 3. Count the numbers of PRs created in 1-week periods and the running total number of PRs each week. 4. Perform the interpolation by making a least-squares fit of the Weibull function to (a) the cumulative distribution of PRs gathered thus far and (b) the goal of no more PRs after the currently anticipated launch date. The interpolation and the anticipated launch date are subject to iterative re-estimation.

Optimization and characterization of a silicon photomultiplier-based ZnS(Ag) proton recoil fast neutron detector for nuclear fuel performance monitoring at TREAT

The restart of the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory and consequent refurbishment of the Fuel Motion Monitoring System (FMMS), or Hodoscope, offers the opportunity to upgrade the detector system used for neutron imaging. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are a viable option for updating the Hodoscope to yield improved fuel monitoring capability. The Hodoscope uses ZnS(Ag) proton recoil scintillators (PRS) that provide good gamma-ray suppression and discrimination. Previous work showed that the Hamamatsu S13360-6075CS SiPM offers the best neutron detection and gamma-ray discrimination capability with the ZnS PRS. This work optimizes a SiPM-based detector and develops a PRS prototype for testing. Specifically, possible overvoltages for use are determined by confirming steady operation over extended measurement times. In addition, various SiPM-circuit implementations are tested to optimize the detector according to desired properties, and ultimately a PRS prototype is developed with modifiable components for versatile testing. Measurements of the neutron detection efficiency and gamma-ray rejection efficiency of SiPM-based PRS detectors and a reference PMT-based detector are also carried out. Neutron detection efficiency ranges between 1-2%, and detected gamma-ray rejection efficiency is on the order of 10 -7 . In conclusion, use of a low-pass filter only or a low-pass filter and 50-ω shunt resistor is recommended for the SiPM-based detector, and both configurations demonstrate improved performance over the PMT-based detector.

Overestimated prediction using polygenic prediction derived from summary statistics

When polygenic risk score (PRS) is derived from summary statistics, independence between discovery and test sets cannot be monitored. We compared two types of PRS studies derived from raw genetic data (denoted as rPRS) and the summary statistics for IGAP (sPRS). Two variables with the high heritability in UK Biobank, hypertension, and height, are used to derive an exemplary scale effect of PRS. sPRS without APOE is derived from International Genomics of Alzheimer’s Project (IGAP), which records ΔAUC and ΔR 2 of 0.051 ± 0.013 and 0.063 ± 0.015 for Alzheimer’s Disease Sequencing Project (ADSP) and 0.060 and 0.086 for Accelerating Medicine Partnership - Alzheimer’s Disease (AMP-AD). On UK Biobank, rPRS performances for hypertension assuming a similar size of discovery and test sets are 0.0036 ± 0.0027 (ΔAUC) and 0.0032 ± 0.0028 (ΔR 2 ). For height, ΔR 2 is 0.029 ± 0.0037. Considering the high heritability of hypertension and height of UK Biobank and sample size of UK Biobank, sPRS results from AD databases are inflated. Independence between discovery and test sets is a well-known basic requirement for PRS studies. However, a lot of PRS studies cannot follow such requirements because of impossible direct comparisons when using summary statistics. Thus, for sPRS, potential duplications should be carefully considered within the same ethnic group.

Physical Regime Sensitivity

Abstract This work presents a novel sensitivity approach that quantifies sensitivity to regimes of a model’s state variables rather than constitutive model parameters. This Physical Regime Sensitivity (PRS) determines which regimes of a model’s independent variables have the biggest influence on an experiment or application. PRS analysis is demonstrated on a strength model used in the simulation of a copper Taylor cylinder. In a series of simulations, the strength model was perturbed sequentially in local regimes of plastic strain, plastic strain rate, temperature and pressure, and then the prediction of cylinder shape was compared to unperturbed calculations. Results show, for example, that the deformed length of the cylinder was most sensitive to strength at a strain rate of 1.0 × 10 4 /sec., but the deformed footprint radius was most sensitive to strength at a strain rate of about 4.0 × 10 4 /sec. Compared to current histogram approaches, PRS can be used to design or interpret integrated experiments by identifying not just which regimes are accessed somewhere in the experiment but the causality question of which regimes actually affect the measured data. PRS should allow one to focus experimental and modeling efforts where they are most needed and to better interpret experiments.

Microbial Reduction of Manganese Oxides From AMD Solids for the Biomining of Critical Minerals / Rare Earth Elements

Abandoned Coal-Mine Drainage (AMD) is a source of critical minerals (CMs) that can be biomined to increase domestic CM production for the growing tech industry while mitigating current AMD hazardous waste. Pennsylvania has ~11,000 abandoned mines, ~500 of which are currently being treated with passive remediation systems (PRS), designed to increase the pH and precipitate AMD waste onsite. Manganese (Mn) that precipitates from AMD waste can co-precipitate with CMs, and the Mn and CMs will accumulate on the PRS solids over the treatment period. This results in high Mn/CM solids that could produce a valuable leachate if resolubilized. Mn reduction and solubilization can occur through microbial driven geochemical changes such as the acidification of the environment, and it is expected that Mn resolubilization will lead to a co-resolubilization of the CMs. Investigation and stimulation of this microbial resolubilization could result in an affordable CM release process that does not require chemical additives into the environment. However the microbial mechanisms that contribute to Mn resolubilization are poorly understood. Here, we have isolated bacteria capable of resolubilizing Mn from AMD PRS. Five of the bacteria isolates have been identified as Bacillus spp. and two as Corynebacterium spp. that ferment glucose to reduce/solubilize Mn MnO2 by acidogenesis. The bacterial isolates are also capable of solubilizing Mn and CMs (Y, Zr, Sb, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) from AMD PRS precipitated solids through their production of organic acids. Determining the microbial metabolism and genes involved in the resolubilization of manganese is crucial to optimize the biomining of CMs from AMD solid precipitants. This work addresses the growing need to develop novel CM recovery methods from domestic sources.

Monitoring and control of spacecraft systems using procedural reasoning

Research concerned with automating the monitoring and control of spacecraft systems is discussed. In particular, the application of SRI's Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) to the handling of malfunctions in the Reaction Control System (RCS) of NASA's Space Shuttle is examined. Unlike traditional monitoring and control systems, PRS is able to reason about and perform complex tasks in a very flexible and robust manner, somewhat in the manner of a human assistant. Using various RCS malfunctions as examples (including sensor faults, leaking components, multiple alarms, and regulator and jet failures), it is shown how PRS manages to combine both goal-directed reasoning and the ability to react rapidly to unanticipated changes in its environment. In conclusion, some important issues in the design of PRS are reviewed and future enhancements are indicated.

Reaction control system/remote manipulator system automation

The objectives of this project is to evaluate the capability of the Procedural Reasoning System (PRS) in a typical real-time space shuttle application and to assess its potential for use in the Space Station Freedom. PRS, developed by SRI International, is a result of research in automating the monitoring and control of spacecraft systems. The particular application selected for the present work is the automation of malfunction handling procedures for the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS). The SRMS malfunction procedures will be encoded within the PRS framework, a crew interface appropriate to the RMS application will be developed, and the real-time data interface software developed. The resulting PRS will then be integrated with the high-fidelity On-orbit Simulation of the NASA Johnson Space Center's System Engineering Simulator, and tests under various SRMS fault scenarios will be conducted.

Planar Rayleigh scattering and laser-induced fluorescence for visualization of a hot, Mach 2 annular air jet

Planar Rayleigh scattering (PRS) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) were used to investigate the vitiated air component of a coaxial hydrogen/vitiated air nonpremixed turbulent jet flame that is ejected at a Mach number of 2. All experiments were performed with a xenon chloride tunable excimer laser. Planar information for both techniques was obtained using laser sheets 6 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 300 micron thick. In this flow field, the effective Rayleigh cross section of the components in the vitiated air was assumed to be independent of composition. Therefore, the PRS technique produced signals which were proportional to total density. When the flow field was assumed to be at a known and uniform pressure, the PRS signal data for the vitiated air could be converted to temperature information. Also, PLIF images were generated by probing the OH molecule. These images contain striation patterns attributed to small localized instantaneous temperature nonuniformities. The results from the PLIF and PRS techniques were used to show that this flow field contains a nongaseous component, most likely liquid water that can be reduced by increasing the settling chamber wall temperature.

P-polarized reflectance spectroscopy: A high sensitive real-time monitoring technique to study surface kinetics under steady state epitaxial deposition conditions

This paper describes the results of real-time optical monitoring of epitaxial growth processes by p-polarized reflectance spectroscopy (PRS) using a single wavelength application under pulsed chemical beam epitaxy (PCBE) condition. The high surface sensitivity of PRS allows the monitoring of submonolayer precursors coverage on the surface as shown for GaP homoepitaxy and GaP on Si heteroepitaxy as examples. In the case of heteroepitaxy, the growth rate and optical properties are revealed by PRS using interference oscillations as they occur during growth. Super-imposed on these interference oscillations, the PRS signal exhibits a fine structure caused by the periodic alteration of the surface chemistry by the pulsed supply of chemical precursors. This fine structure is modeled under conditions where the surface chemistry cycles between phosphorus supersaturated and phosphorus depleted surfaces. The mathematical model describes the fine structure using a surface layer that increases during the tertiarybutyl phosphine (TBP) supply and decreases during and after the triethylgallium (TEG) pulse, which increases the growing GaP film thickness. The imaginary part of the dielectric function of the surface layer is revealed from the turning points in the fine structure, where the optical response to the first precursor pulse in the cycle sequence changes sign. The amplitude of the fine structure is determined by the surface layer thickness and the complex dielectric functions for the surface layer with the underlying bulk film. Surface kinetic data can be obtained by analyzing the rise and decay transients of the fine structure.

Problem Reporting System

The Problem Reporting System (PRS) is a Web application, running on two Web servers (load-balanced) and two database servers (RAID-5), which establishes a system for submission, editing, and sharing of reports to manage risk assessment of anomalies identified in NASA's flight projects. PRS consolidates diverse anomaly-reporting systems, maintains a rich database set, and incorporates a robust engine, which allows tracking of any hardware, software, or paper process by configuring an appropriate life cycle. Global and specific project administration and setup tools allow lifecycle tailoring, along with customizable controls for user, e-mail, notifications, and more. PRS is accessible via the World Wide Web for authorized user at most any location. Upon successful log-in, the user receives a customizable window, which displays time-critical 'To Do' items (anomalies requiring the user s input before the system moves the anomaly to the next phase of the lifecycle), anomalies originated by the user, anomalies the user has addressed, and custom queries that can be saved for future use. Access controls exist depending on a user's role as system administrator, project administrator, user, or developer, and then, further by association with user, project, subsystem, company, or item with provisions for business-to-business exclusions, limitations on access according to the covert or overt nature of a given project, all with multiple layers of filtration, as needed. Reporting of metrics is built in. There is a provision for proxy access (in which the user may choose to grant one or more other users to view screens and perform actions as though they were the user, during any part of a tracking life cycle - especially useful during tight build schedules and vacations to keep things moving). The system also provides users the ability to have an anomaly link to or notify other systems, including QA Inspection Reports, Safety, GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program) Alert, Corrective Actions, and Lessons Learned. The PRS tracking engine was designed as a very extensible and scalable system, able to support additional applications, with future development possibilities already discussed, including Incident Surprise Anomalies (for anomalies occurring during Operations phases of NASA Flight projects), GIDEP and NASA Alerts, and others.

Bacterial nitrite production oxidizes Fe(II) bioremediating acidic abandoned coal mine drainage

Passive remediation systems (PRSs) treating either acidic or neutral abandoned coal mine drainage (AMD) are colonized by bacteria that can bioremediate iron (Fe) through chemical cycling. Due to the low pH in acidic AMD, iron oxidation from soluble Fe(II) to precipitated Fe(III) is mainly directed by microbial oxidation. Less well described are biotic reactions that lead to iron remediation through abiotic secondary reactions. We describe here iron oxidation in acidic AMD that is mediated by the bacterial reduction of nitrate to nitrite followed by the geochemical oxidation of Fe(II). Within an acidic PRS, 4,560 bacteria cultured from the microbial community were screened for their ability to oxidize iron and to perform nitrate-dependent iron oxidation (NDFO). Iron oxidation in the culturable community was observed in every pond of the system, ranging from 2.1% to 11.4%, and NDFO was observed in every pond, ranging from 1.4% to 6.0% of the culturable bacteria. Five NDFO isolates were purified and identified as Paraburkholderia spp. One of our isolates, Paraburkholderia sp. AV18 was shown to drive NDFO through the bacterial production of nitrite that in turn chemically oxidizes Fe(II) (nitrate reduction-iron oxidation; NRIO). AV18 expressed nitrate reductase, napA, concurrent to nitrite production. Burkholderiales are found by 16S rRNA gene sequencing in every pond of the PRS. The frequency of NDFO metabolism in the culturable microbial community and abundance of Burkholderiales in the PRS suggest nitrite producers contribute to the bioremediation of iron in acidic AMD and may be an unharnessed opportunity to increase iron bioremediation in acidic conditions.
