Special-Purpose High-Torque Permanent-Magnet Motors

Permanent-magnet brushless motors that must provide high commanded torques and satisfy unusual heat-removal requirement are developed. Intended for use as thrust-vector-control actuators in large rocket engines. Techniques and concepts used to design improved motors for special terrestrial applications. Conceptual motor design calls for use of rotor containing latest high-energy-product rare-earth permanent magnets so that motor produces required torque while drawing smallest possible currents from power supply. Torque generated by electromagnetic interaction between stator and permanent magnets in rotor when associated electronic circuits applied appropriately temporally and spatially phased currents to stator windings. Phase relationships needed to produce commanded torque computed in response to torque command and to electronically sensed angular position of rotor relative to stator.

Miniature high speed compressor having embedded permanent magnet motor

A high speed centrifugal compressor for compressing fluids includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) having a hollow shaft, the being supported on its ends by ball bearing supports. A permanent magnet core is embedded inside the shaft. A stator with a winding is located radially outward of the shaft. The PMSM includes a rotor including at least one impeller secured to the shaft or integrated with the shaft as a single piece. The rotor is a high rigidity rotor providing a bending mode speed of at least 100,000 RPM which advantageously permits implementation of relatively low-cost ball bearing supports.

Dovetail Rotor Construction For Permanent-Magnet Motors

New way of mounting magnets in permanent-magnet, electronically commutated, brushless dc motors. Magnets wedge shaped, tapering toward center of rotor. Oppositely tapered pole pieces, electron-beam welded to rotor hub, retain magnets against centrifugal force generated by spinning rotor. To avoid excessively long electron-beam welds, pole pieces assembled in segments rather than single long bars.

Axial-field permanent magnet motors for electric vehicles

The modelling of an anisotropic alnico magnet for the purpose of field computation involves assigning a value for the material's permeability in the transverse direction. This is generally based upon the preferred direction properties, being all that are easily available. By analyzing the rotation of intrinsic magnetization due to the self demagnetizing field, it is shown that the common assumptions relating the transverse to the preferred direction are not accurate. Transverse magnetization characteristics are needed, and these are given for Alnico 5, 5-7, and 8 magnets, yielding appropriate permeability values.

Permanent-Magnet Motors and Generators for Aircraft

Electric motors and generators that use permarotating machinery, but aspects of control and power conditioning are also considered. The discussion is structured around three basic areas: rotating machine design considerations presents various configuration and material options, generator applications provides insight into utilization areas and shows actual hardware and test results, and motor applications provides the same type of information for drive systems.

Commutating Permanent-Magnet Motors At Low Speed

Circuit provides forced commutation during starting. Forced commutation circuit diverts current from inverter SCR's and turns SCR's off during commutation intervals. Silicon controlled rectifier in circuit unnecessary when switch S10 replaced by high-current, high-voltage transistor. At present, high-current, low-voltage device must suffice.

Estimation of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Parameters using a Linear Unknown Input Interval Observer

This paper develops and evaluate a technique to estimate the speed and unknown load torque of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). An interval unknown input observer (UIO) for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems is designed and utilized to estimate the PMSM parameters. Interval UIOs are advantageous as they allow for the estimation of both states and unknown inputs, while accounting for varying uncertainty sources, such as model and measurement uncertainties inherent in dynamic systems and processes. First, the nonlinear PMSM model is linearized to transform it to a suitable form for application of the linear interval UIO. Then, the interval UIO is applied to jointly estimate the motor speed and the unknown load torque disturbance. Assuming that the measurement noise and disturbances are bounded, lower and upper bounds are first computed for the unmeasured state (motor speed) and then for the unknown input (load torque). The proposed approach and its limitations are demonstrated for the nonlinear PMSM model derived from its equivalent electrical circuit.

Experimental Performance Evaluation of a High Speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive for a Flywheel Application at Different Frequencies

This paper presents the results of an experimental performance characterization study of a high speed, permanent magnet motor/generator (M/G) and drive applied to a flywheel module. Unlike the conventional electric machine the flywheel M/G is not a separated unit; its stator and rotor are integrated into a flywheel assembly. The M/G rotor is mounted on a flywheel rotor, which is magnetically levitated and sealed within a vacuum chamber during the operation. Thus, it is not possible to test the M/G using direct load measurements with a dynamometer and torque transducer. Accordingly, a new in-situ testing method had to be developed. The paper describes a new flywheel M/G and drive performance evaluation technique, which allows the estimation of the losses, efficiency and power quality of the flywheel high speed permanent magnet M/G, while working in vacuum, over wide frequency and torque ranges. This method does not require any hardware modification nor any special addition to the test rig. This new measurement technique is useful for high-speed applications, when applying an external load is technically difficult.

A lightweight electronically commutated dc motor for electric passenger vehicles

A functional model breadboard converter and a rare-earth-cobalt, permanent magnet motor; as well as an engineering model converter and PM motor suitable for vehicle installations were developed and tested. The converter and motor achieved an 88% peak efficiency, a maximum output of 26 kW at 26,000 rpm, and a continuous rating of 15 kW. The system also generated power to the source during braking, with a demonstrated peak power available at the converter terminals of approximately 26 kW at 88% efficiency. Major conclusions include: (1) the SAE J227a(D) driving cycle efficiency for the converter/motor is 86% to 88% when energy available for recovery at the converter terminals is included; (2) the converter initial cost is approximately five times that of the permanent magnet motor, but can be reduced by means of LSI logic and integrated liquid cooled semiconductor packages; and (3) an electronically commutated motor with a liquid cooled converter will operate reliably without service or maintenance for the life of a passenger vehicle.

"Fan-Tip-Drive" High-Power-Density, Permanent Magnet Electric Motor and Test Rig Designed for a Nonpolluting Aircraft Propulsion Program

A scaled blade-tip-drive test rig was designed at the NASA Glenn Research Center. The rig is a scaled version of a direct-current brushless motor that would be located in the shroud of a thrust fan. This geometry is very attractive since the allowable speed of the armature is approximately the speed of the blade tips (Mach 1 or 1100 ft/s). The magnetic pressure generated in the motor acts over a large area and, thus, produces a large force or torque. This large force multiplied by the large velocity results in a high-power-density motor.

Permanent Magnetic Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Model Development

The Advanced Air Transport Technology (AATT) Project seeks to enhance the capabilities of fixed-wing subsonic transport through improved energy efficiency and environmental compatibility. One element of this effort is the use of high efficiency PMSM systems. Understanding the behavior and limitations of the se motors allows the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to collaborate with and inform its partners worldwide. PMSM modeling is achieved using MATLAB®-Simulink® (The Math Works, Inc., Natick, Massachusetts). Through the analysis of an existing high-fidelity NASA Electrical Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) model, simplified models of varying fidelity can be developed with the goal of building a PMSM model capable of running in real-time for use in a piloted simulation environment. By utilizing system identification methods, it has been demonstrated that internal electrical components like the inverter can be represented by a simple variable gain thus greatly reducing the required simulation step size and subsequently decreasing model run-time by multiple orders of magnitude

X-57 60kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Cruise Motor Finite Element Electromagnetic Modeling

The X-57 60kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor for cruise applications was modeled utilizing a two-dimensional electromagnetics simulation software called Finite Element Method Magnets (FEMM, D. Meeker). Through FEMM, the simulated induction and torque characteristics of the X-57 PMSM were obtained. These parameters and other values were compared to actual static laboratory measurements. A three-dimensional electromagnetic model of the X-57 cruise motor was created utilizing OperaFEA (Dassault Systemes SE, Velizy-Villacoublay, France). Torque, RPM, power, resistance, and inductance characteristics were examined along with establishing work to begin examining heat flow and heat dissipation for efficiency purposes.

Circuit Regulates Speed Of dc Motor

Driving circuit regulates speed of small dc permanent-magnet motor in tape recorder. Two nested feedback loops maintain speed within 1 percent of constant value. Inner loop provides coarse regulation, while outer loop removes most of variation in speed that remains in the presence of regulation by the inner loop. Compares speed of motor with commanded speed and adjusts current supplied to motor accordingly.
