Electron Impact Excitation of Forbidden and Allowed Transitions in O(II)

The B-spline R-matrix method is used to investigate the electron impact excitation of forbidden and allowed transitions in singly ionized oxygen. The relativistic effects have been incorporated in the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. Flexible non-orthogonal sets of radial functions are used to obtain accurate target description and to represent the scattering functions. The 47 fine-structure levels of the 2s(sup 2)2p(sup 3), 2s2p(sup 4), 2s(sup 2)2p(sup 2)3s, 2s(sup 2)2p(sup 2)3p and 2s(sup 2)2p(sup 2)3d configurations have been included in the scattering calculation. A calculation with 62 levels in the close-coupling expansion using the Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM) method with orthogonal radial functions has also been carried out to check electron correlation, relativistic and channel coupling effects. The present results are in good agreement with the previous 16-level BPRM calculation by Montenegro et a1 (2006 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 39 1863-77) for the forbidden transitions, but differ from the 21-level BPRM calculation by McLaughlin and Bell (1998 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 31 4317-29). Our cross sections for the first forbidden (sup 4)S(sup o)-(sup 2)D(sup o)and resonance (sup 4)S(sup o)-2s(sup 2)p(sup 4) (sup 4)P transitions are in reasonably good agreement with the electron energy-loss and merged-beams experiment.

Digitally Controlled Slot Coupled Patch Array

A four-element array conformed to a singly curved conducting surface has been demonstrated to provide 2 dB axial ratio of 14 percent, while maintaining VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) of 2:1 and gain of 13 dBiC. The array is digitally controlled and can be scanned with the LMS Adaptive Algorithm using the power spectrum as the objective, as well as the Direction of Arrival (DoA) of the beam to set the amplitude of the power spectrum. The total height of the array above the conducting surface is 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). A uniquely configured microstrip-coupled aperture over a conducting surface produced supergain characteristics, achieving 12.5 dBiC across the 2-to-2.13- GHz and 2.2-to-2.3-GHz frequency bands. This design is optimized to retain VSWR and axial ratio across the band as well. The four elements are uniquely configured with respect to one another for performance enhancement, and the appropriate phase excitation to each element for scan can be found either by analytical beam synthesis using the genetic algorithm with the measured or simulated far field radiation pattern, or an adaptive algorithm implemented with the digitized signal. The commercially available tuners and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) boards utilized required precise phase coherent configuration control, and with custom code developed by Nokomis, Inc., were shown to be fully functional in a two-channel configuration controlled by FPGA boards. A four-channel tuner configuration and oscilloscope configuration were also demonstrated although algorithm post-processing was required.

Photoionization of the Fe lons: Structure of the K-Edge

X-ray absorption and emission features arising from the inner-shell transitions in iron are of practical importance in astrophysics due to the Fe cosmic abundance and to the absence of traits from other elements in the nearby spectrum. As a result, the strengths and energies of such features can constrain the ionization stage, elemental abundance, and column density of the gas in the vicinity of the exotic cosmic objects, e.g. active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galactic black hole candidates. Although the observational technology in X-ray astronomy is still evolving and currently lacks high spectroscopic resolution, the astrophysical models have been based on atomic calculations that predict a sudden and high step-like increase of the cross section at the K-shell threshold (see for instance. New Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations of the photoionization cross section of the ground states of Fe XVII in the region near the K threshold are presented. They strongly support the view that the previously assumed sharp edge behaviour is not correct. The latter has been caused by the neglect of spectator Auger channels in the decay of the resonances converging to the K threshold. These decay channels include the dominant KLL channels and give rise to constant widths (independent of n). As a consequence, these series display damped Lorentzian components that rapidly blend to impose continuity at threshold, thus reformatting the previously held picture of the edge. Apparent broadened iron edges detected in the spectra of AGN and galactic black hole candidates seem to indicate that these quantum effects may be at least partially responsible for the observed broadening.

Photoionization and Recombination

Theoretically self-consistent calculations for photoionization and (e + ion) recombination are described. The same eigenfunction expansion for the ion is employed in coupled channel calculations for both processes, thus ensuring consistency between cross sections and rates. The theoretical treatment of (e + ion) recombination subsumes both the non-resonant recombination ("radiative recombination"), and the resonant recombination ("di-electronic recombination") processes in a unified scheme. In addition to the total, unified recombination rates, level-specific recombination rates and photoionization cross sections are obtained for a large number of atomic levels. Both relativistic Breit-Pauli, and non-relativistic LS coupling, calculations are carried out in the close coupling approximation using the R-matrix method. Although the calculations are computationally intensive, they yield nearly all photoionization and recombination parameters needed for astrophysical photoionization models with higher precision than hitherto possible, estimated at about 10-20% from comparison with experimentally available data (including experimentally derived DR rates). Results are electronically available for over 40 atoms and ions. Photoionization and recombination of He-, and Li-like C and Fe are described for X-ray modeling. The unified method yields total and complete (e+ion) recombination rate coefficients, that can not otherwise be obtained theoretically or experimentally.
