Investigation of Low-Energy Lattice Dynamics and Their Role in Superionic Na Diffusion and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of Na 3 PSe 4 as a Solid-State Electrolyte

The atomic dynamics of Na 3 PSe 4 were investigated using a combination of neutron scattering experiments and ab initio and machine-learned molecular dynamics simulations to probe the interplay of fast ionic diffusion with atomic vibrations (phonons) of the host lattice. Our results reveal the existence of low-energy vibrational modes, simultaneously involving motions of Na + ions and framework polyanion subunits, and show that these modes become strongly overdamped in the superionic regime as they couple with the Na + hopping process. In particular, the Na+ migration energy landscape is strongly impacted by low-energy phonons derived from a soft acoustic branch of the host lattice, which modulates the diameter of the Na + diffusion channel at the bottleneck. We find that an additional factor for the enhanced Na + conductivity in Na 3 PSe 4 is the presence of Na-vacancies, which also affect the low-frequency dynamics and thermal vibration amplitudes, pointing to an interplay between Na + vacancies and host dynamics, jointly enhancing ionic diffusivity. Finally, we investigate the origin of ultralow thermal conductivities in Na 3 PSe 4 and Na 3 PS 4 using Green–Kubo simulations and find that low-energy acoustic phonon modes of the overall crystal framework provide a dominant contribution to the thermal conductivity.

Strongly Anharmonic Phonons and Their Role in Superionic Diffusion and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of Cu 7 PSe 6

We report the quest for advanced superionic materials requires understanding their complex atomic dynamics, but detailed studies of the interplay between lattice vibrations and ionic diffusion remain scarce. Here inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements in the superionic argyrodite Cu 7 PSe 6 are reported, combined with molecular dynamics (MD) based on ab initio and machine-learned potentials, providing critical insights into the atomistic mechanisms underlying fast ion conduction. The results reveal how long-range Cu diffusion is limited by intercluster hopping, controlled by selective anharmonic phonons of the crystalline framework. Further, the Green–Kubo simulations reproduce the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and identify contributions from mobile ions, phonons, and their cross-correlations. The mode resolved analysis shows that the thermal conductivity is dominated by low-energy acoustic phonon modes of the overall crystal framework. The analysis of mode-resolved spectral functions further show that vibrational modes with significant Cu contributions are strongly damped, corresponding to the breakdown of associated phonon quasiparticles. These results highlight the importance of strongly anharmonic effects in superionic systems, in which the traditional quasiharmonic phonon picture is insufficient, and pave the way toward combining machine-learning accelerated simulations with neutron scattering experiments to rationalize the complex atomic dynamics underlying ionic and thermal transport.

IDAES-PSE Software Tools for Optimizing Energy Systems and Market Interactions

Modern power grids coordinate electricity production and consumption via multi-scale wholesale energy markets. Historically, levelized cost metrics were the de facto standard for techno-eco-nomic analyses of energy systems and comparison of technology options. However, these metrics neglect the complexity of energy infrastructure including the time-varying value of electricity. An emerging alternative is multi-period optimization, which considers the locational marginal price of electricity as input data (parameters). In this work, we present a general interface for multi-period optimization with time-varying energy prices to facilitate rapid analysis and comparison of potential energy systems models. The PriceTakerModel class is written in the IDAES-PSE platform and allows users to generate a multi-period, price-taker model instance, as well as automatically generate common operational constraints for their model, such as start-up and shutdown. We show this interface successfully generates multi-period price-taker models, facilitates model discrimination, and aids in analyzing various technologies for deployment in unique energy markets.

Comparative study of the effects of prenatal sevoflurane exposure at different cortical stages on forebrain development and maturation in offspring

Introduction Brain development involves several critical stages, such as proliferation, neuronal migration, axonal pathfinding, and connection formation. Sevoflurane, a γ -aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist, is widely used as an inhaled general anesthetic. However, its impact on brain development has raised increasing concerns, particularly regarding prenatal exposure. This study aims to investigate the effects of prenatal sevoflurane exposure (PSE) at different cortical stages, focusing on its impact on the migration of glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons and neuronal behavior in offspring. Methods PSE was administered at two critical prenatal stages: embryonic day (E) 12.5 and E18.5. Double in situ hybridization was used to identify the coexpression of GABA receptors in Pax6- and Mash1-positive cells in the forebrain. The radial migration of glutamatergic neurons and the tangential migration of GABAergic neurons were analyzed. Behavioral tests, including the open-field test, elevated plus-maze test, forced swim test, tail suspension test, sucrose preference test, and Morris water maze, were performed on offspring to assess anxiety-like behaviors, depression, and learning and memory impairments. Results PSE inhibits the radial migration of glutamatergic neurons and promotes the tangential migration of GABAergic neurons. Specifically, early exposure (E12.5) inhibited the expression of the Pax6–Tbr2–Tbr1 cascade and the radial migration of Tbr1 in the ventral prefrontal cortex (PFC), whereas late exposure (E18.5) inhibited this process on the dorsal side. In addition, offspring mice with PSE exhibited increased anxiety-like behaviors, rather than depression, as demonstrated by reduced time spent in the center of the open-field test and in the open arms of the elevated plus-maze test. No significant differences were observed in the forced swim test, tail suspension test, or sucrose preference test. Furthermore, learning and memory impairments were observed in the Morris water maze. Conclusion Our results indicate that PSE at E12.5 and E18.5 leads to abnormalities in the migration of glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons, affecting long-term anxiety-like behaviors and causing learning and memory impairments in offspring mice.

An Interfacial Engineering Approach toward Operation of a Porous Solid Electrolyte CO 2 Electrolyzer

Waste CO 2 can be repurposed as a carbon feedstock for synthesizing valuable chemicals via CO 2 electrolysis. Porous solid electrolyte (PSE) CO 2 electrolysis has been demonstrated as an economically viable method to produce high purity products. This work applies an interfacial engineering approach to determine key factors to improve performance in PSE CO 2 electrolyzers. We standardize the assembly by binding the ionic resin into an ionomer wafer and utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to design gaskets for uniform fluid flow. Here, we employ the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) method to determine that anionic-conducting interfaces are the primary contributor to energy losses. To address this, we demonstrate that enhancing the contact between the cathode and the anion exchange membrane (AEM) and the AEM-ionic resin interface allows for low overpotential in deionized water operation.

Performance Evaluation of an Advanced Distributed Energy Resource Management Algorithm

This paper presents performance evaluation of a new distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) algorithm via an advanced hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform. The HIL platform provides realistic testing in a laboratory environment, including the accurate modeling of sub-transmission and distribution networks, the DERMS software controller, and 84 power hardware solar photovoltaic (PV) inverters, standard communication protocols, and a capacitor bank controller. The DERMS algorithm is also called, Grid-Optimization of Solar (GO-Solar) platform which includes predictive state estimation (PSE) and online multiple objective optimization (OMOO) to dispatch the legacy devices and distributed energy resources (e.g., PV). The voltage regulation performance is evaluated under three scenarios, volt-var smart inverter (baseline), and DERMS control for 100% and 30% of PV. The results show that controlling 30% of PV systems with the GO-Solar platform may provide the best balance of control performance and implementation cost.

Synthesis of inter‐lanthanide sesquioxides LnLn'O 3 by polymeric steric entrapment

Lanthanide oxides are well known in the fields of optical, electronic, and magnetic materials. Even so, there are many application spaces yet to be explored. Previous modeling of inter-lanthanide sesquioxides, in which the compound contains two lanthanide cations, predicts the lowest level energy structure as a function of chemistry, which this work seeks to verify. Three materials of interest, ErLuO 3 , LaLuO 3 , and SmLuO 3 , were synthesized for the first time by the polymeric steric entrapment (PSE) method. X-ray diffraction confirms the stable state predictions of ErLuO 3 and SmLuO 3 forming a bixbyite type structure and LaLuO 3 forming a perovskite type structure. This work demonstrates PSE as a viable and reliable route toward the synthesis of these unique materials.
