Heater control circuit provides both fast and proportional control

Proportional control circuit supplies a heater with full current, from a pulsating dc source, to a present temperature and then switches to proportional control for fine temperature regulation. Two resistors and a diode are added to the existing circuit. The circuit can be adapted to control other functions.

Pulse-Width Proportional-Controller Circuit

Proportional controller for motor speed provides full 0- to 100-percent linear control of durations of motor-driving pulses. Controller uses commercially available LM3900 integrated circuit, which requires only single supply voltage of 4 to 30 V. Control voltage provided by adjustable potentiometer or by external source of feedback information such as motor-speed sensing circuit.

Self-regulating proportionally controlled heating apparatus and technique

A self-regulating proportionally controlled heating apparatus and technique is provided wherein a single electrical resistance heating element having a temperature coefficient of resistance serves simultaneously as a heater and temperature sensor. The heating element is current-driven and the voltage drop across the heating element is monitored and a component extracted which is attributable to a change in actual temperature of the heating element from a desired reference temperature, so as to produce a resulting error signal. The error signal is utilized to control the level of the heater drive current and the actual heater temperature in a direction to reduce the noted temperature difference. The continuous nature of the process for deriving the error signal feedback information results in true proportional control of the heating element without the necessity for current-switching which may interfere with nearby sensitive circuits, and with no cyclical variation in the controlled temperature.

Theoretical and Analog Studies of the Effects of Nonlinear Stability Derivatives on the Longitudinal Motions of an Aircraft in Response to Step Control Deflections and to the Influence of Proportional Automatic Control

Through theoretical and analog results the effects of two nonlinear stability derivatives on the longitudinal motions of an aircraft have been investigated. Nonlinear functions of pitching-moment and lift coefficients with angle of attack were considered. Analog results of aircraft motions in response to step elevator deflections and to the action of the proportional control systems are presented. The occurrence of continuous hunting oscillations was predicted and demonstrated for the attitude stabilization system with proportional control for certain nonlinear pitching-moment variations and autopilot adjustments.

Implementation of a self-controlling heater

Temperature control of radiation sensors, targets, and other critical components is a common requirement in modern scientific instruments. Conventional control systems use a heater and a temperature sensor mounted on the body to be controlled. For proportional control, the sensor provides feedback to circuitry which drives the heater with an amount of power proportional to the temperature error. It is impractical or undesirable to mount both a heater and a sensor on certain components such as ultra-small parts or thin filaments. In principle, a variable current through the element is used for heating, and the change in voltage drop due to the element's temperature coefficient is separated and used to monitor or control its own temperature. Since there are no thermal propagation delays between heater and sensor, such control systems are exceptionally stable.

Development of an externally powered prosthetic hook for amputees

The powered hook with trigger finger appears to be a useful adaptation of a terminal device for an amputee when performing vocational activities involving the use of a powered tool requiring a trigger control. The proportional control system includes transducers and amplifiers and appears to have widespread application for control of any external power, whether it be in the orthotic or prosthetic field.

Microprocessor control system for 200-kilowatt Mod-OA wind turbines

The microprocessor system and program used to control the operation of the 200-kW Mod-OA wind turbines is described. The system is programmed to begin startup and shutdown sequences automatically and to control yaw motion. Rotor speed and power output are controlled with integral and proportional control of the blade pitch angle. Included in the report are a description of the hardware and a discussion of the software programming technique. A listing of the PL/M software program is given.

Feedback Linearization in a Six Degree-of-Freedom MAG-LEV Stage

A six degree-of-freedom electromagnetically suspended motion control stage (the Angstrom Stage) has been designed and constructed for use in short-travel, high-resolution motion control applications. It achieves better than 0.5 nm resolution over a 100 micron range of travel. The stage consists of a single moving element (the platen) floating in an oil filled chamber. The oil is crucial to the stage's operation since it forms squeeze film dampers between the platen and the frame. Twelve electromagnetic actuators provide the forces necessary to suspend and servo the platen, and six capacitance probes measure its position relative to the frame. The system is controlled using a digital signal processing board residing in a '486 based PC. This digital controller implements a feedback linearization algorithm in real-time to account for nonlinearities in both the magnetic actuators and the fluid film dampers. The feedback linearization technique reduces a highly nonlinear plant with coupling between the degrees of freedom into one that is linear, decoupled, and setpoint independent. The key to this procedure is a detailed plant model. The operation of the feedback linearization procedure is transparent to the outer loop of the controller, and so a proportional controller is sufficient for normal operation. We envision applications of this stage in scanned probe microscopy and for integrated circuit measurement.

Space Shuttle separate-surface control-system study

A control system concept is presented that produces proportional control of yaw moment for the space shuttle from early entry to Mach 2 with only software modifications of the vehicle. It uses separate deflections of the inboard and outboard elevon surfaces and is evaluated, by determining the maximum static yawing moment available by considering the deflection limits of the elevon surfaces. A proportional moment slightly in excess of that produced by the most effective reaction control system (RCS) jet for yaw control can be obtained. In addition to the static moment study, a control law is designed which is intended to produce desired flying qualities.
