Estimating IDP Origins Using ACLED Political Violence Events: Validation with Lebanon IDP Flow Data

A key input in modeling population distribution and flows following conflict events is the inclusion of Internally Displaced Person (IDP) flows between administrative units within a country. These flows are critical for capturing population movement and redistribution driven by current events, particularly conflict. In some cases, IDP destination data are available while origin data is incomplete or unavailable. This creates a gap in understanding where displacement is occurring, limiting the ability to model population redistribution accurately. Without origin data, it is not possible to reallocate population flows or accurately represent where displacement is occurring within the country. This report evaluates whether Armed Conflict Location Event Data (ACLED) political violence event data can be used to estimate IDP origin distributions when direct origin data are unavailable. The approach is validated using historical IDP flow data from Lebanon, where both origins and destinations are observed. Results show that ACLED event distributions strongly correspond to observed IDP-origin patterns, particularly when using cumulative 60-day event windows. The method is most reliable for identifying major origin districts and approximating proportional origin shares. However, it is not intended to reconstruct exact individual displacement flows, but rather to provide a probabilistic spatial allocation of displacement origins.

Origin of replication discovery for environmentally isolated Pantoea strain enables expression of heterologous proteins, pathways and products

Leveraging predicted origin sequences from a previously characterized groundwater plasmidome, we constructed a barcoded plasmid library to screen for previously unknown origins. Testing this library against a panel of representative bacterial strains led to the identification of 3 previously unknown origins that replicate in gram-negative bacteria not previously associated with these origin sequences. Experimental validation confirmed that a plasmid bearing origin 6911 as the sole origin could replicate with a copy number of 9 (±2) in Pantoea sp. MT58, a fast growing and metal tolerant, environmentally important bacterium. Plasmids based on this new origin were used to express the reporter protein GFP, and non-native metabolite pathways for the natural product indigoidine and the terpenoid compound isoprenol. Functional previously unknown origins of replication in such non-model organisms can expand the toolkit for genetic manipulations of both model and less-studied bacteria.

Research in Theoretical Particle Physics: Neutrino Masses and The Origin of CP-Violation

The main goal of this project was to investigate the theories of neutrino masses at the low scale and the origin of CP-violation in physics beyond the Standard Model. The origin of neutrino masses is one of the most pressing issues in particle physics. In this proposal, we investigated the theories for neutrino masses based on local total lepton number. In these theories anomaly cancellation predicts the existence of extra fermions with lepton number, and one of them is a good dark matter (DM) candidate. The cosmological constraints on the DM relic density implies that the lepton number symmetry breaking scale must be below the multi-TeV scale. Therefore, one can hope to test the origin of neutrino masses in current or future experiments. We investigated in great detail the anomaly cancellation in these gauge theories, study the different mechanisms for neutrino masses, study the predictions for direct and indirect dark matter experiments. Since these theories predict new sources of CP violation, we investigated the predictions for the electric dipole moments (EDM). The Higgs decays and the different signatures at the Large Hadron Collider were investigated in great detail. Finally, we studied the possible baryogenesis mechanisms in these theories in agreement with the EDM, DM and collider constraints. The origin of CP violation in the Standard Model is unknown. In this proposal, we investigated the simplest mechanisms for spontaneous CP-violation to explain the CP-violation in the CKM matrix and the value of the QCD vacuum angle. We discussed the Nelson-Barr mechanism in gauge theories predicting vector-like quarks from anomaly cancellation such as theories for local baryon number. We discussed the Bento-Branco-Parada mechanism in gauge theories to explain the CP-Violation in the CKM matrix. We will investigate models with two Higgs doublets in the context of the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification. We will show the non-decoupling effects in the Higgs sector, the main constraints coming from flavour violating processes when the Yukawa couplings are related by the gauge symmetry in theories for quark-lepton unification. We will investigate the predictions for electric dipole moments in these theories. The possibility to have successful baryogenesis was investigated. Finally, we investigated the relation between CP-violation in the quark and leptonic sectors. The future results from these studies could help us to understand two main issues in physics beyond the Standard Model: The Origin of Neutrino Masses and CP-violation.

Evaluating the Origins of Aerobic Oxidation Catalysis with TAM-3, a MOF with Accessible Co(II) Sites and Large Pores

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive platforms that merge concepts of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Catalyst design and optimization are enabled by an array of synthetic methods that offer independent control over the local chemical structure of lattice-embedded metal ions (i.e., ligand identity and geometry) and the long-range materials properties (i.e., porosity). Establishing the origin of catalytic activity in MOF-promoted reactions remains a significant challenge: The relative rates of catalyst turnover and substrate diffusion dictate the extent to which interstitial sites are accessible and operational in catalysis. To minimize the contributions of surface sites in catalysis, materials with large pore dimensions are often sought, however, the impact of pore expansion on the origins of catalytic activity is similarly challenging to establish. Here, we describe TAM-3, a Co(II) based MOF with accessible metal sites supported by a facially coordinating tris-tetrazole ligand set. TAM-3 features large channel-like pores (17 × 23 Å) and promotes aerobic C−H oxidation and olefin epoxidation. Using a set of simple kinetics experiments, based on the analysis of kinetic isotope effects and olefin oxidation diastereoselectivities, we demonstrate that despite the large pores, interstitial metal ions do not significantly contribute to the observed substrate oxidation. This study highlights the importance of conducting kinetic experiments to assess the origin of apparent catalytic activity with MOFs and the challenge of harnessing reactive oxidants with microporous catalyst materials.

The stellar origins of 96 Zr excesses in presolar graphites from the Murchison meteorite

Context. Zirconium-96 is a stable isotope that can be synthesized under different neutron-rich nucleosynthetic conditions. Astrophysical models predict its production to occur in various stellar environments: from low-to-intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to massive stars and core-collapse supernovae. Aims. Detections of 96Zr excesses, in combination with other isotopic measurements from presolar grains can provide unique constraints on its stellar origin. Presolar grains are microscopic particles found in primitive Solar System materials, which formed in stellar winds and supernova ejecta. The isotopic composition of each grain can provide us a snapshot of the nucleosynthetic processes that took place during the parent star’s lifetime. Methods. In this study, we measured the stable isotopes of C, N, O, Mo, Zr, and Ru in high-density presolar graphite grains from the Murchison meteorite and found four grains that contain positive isotopic anomalies in 96 Zr carried by their internal subgrains. We analyzed multi-element isotopic datasets from each grain to explore the source of the observed 96 Zr excesses. Results. Comparisons with stellar models indicate that two grains likely condensed in an intermediate-mass AGB star with initial metallicity of Z ≤ 0.014. Their 96 Zr/ 94 Zr ratios also match those predicted for born-again AGB stars undergoing a very late thermal pulse and rapidly accreting white dwarfs. After comparing the relative populations of the aforementioned dust-producing stars, we propose rapidly accreting white dwarfs as a new, and more likely, stellar source for one of the presolar grains. The remaining two grains could have originated in the supernova ejecta of massive stars, due to correlated excesses in the p-nuclides, 92, 94 Mo. Thus, grains with 96 Zr anomalies can have a variety of stellar origins, in agreement with theoretical studies. Conclusions. Our study highlights the importance of multi-element analysis in constraining the types of stars where presolar grains have condensed. These data will help improve our understanding of various nucleosynthesis processes in different stellar phases.

Numerical Water Tracers in the Atmospheric Component of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model: Implementation and Changes in Moisture Origin

Numerical water tracers are implemented in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 2. Simulations performed with the water‐tag‐enabled model for both pre‐industrial and future greenhouse gas concentrations reveal a marked increase in the role of mid‐latitude and southern subtropical regions as exporters of atmospheric moisture—to the extratropical upper troposphere and the tropical free troposphere. For the latter, the northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone increases cross‐hemispheric transport of subtropical water vapor to the Northern Hemisphere. In the polar regions, most of the lower tropospheric moistening instead arises from increases in local evaporation. These findings illustrate the utility of the water tags, underscore critical changes in global hydrologic cycle, and provide insight into atmospheric dynamics under future climate scenarios. For applications when a global grid is desired, we additionally propose a novel statistical reconstruction, based on copula modeling, of the joint distribution of origin of water vapor, which reduces the number of tracers from order $\mathcal{O}\left({n}^{2}\right)$to order $\mathcal{O}(n)$, substantially ameliorating the considerable computational cost of water tracers. This statistical reconstruction is particularly beneficial to the interpretation of the relationship between latitude and longitude of origin of moisture over the tropical oceans and in the lower troposphere over land.

Atomistic origin of the entropy of melting from inelastic neutron scattering and machine learned molecular dynamics

The latent heat, L, is central to melting, but its atomic origin remains elusive. It is proportional to the entropy of fusion, ΔS fus = L/T m (T m is the melting temperature), which depends on changes of atom configurations, atom vibrations, and thermal electron excitations. Here, we combine inelastic neutron scattering and machine-learned molecular dynamics to separate ΔS fus into these components for Ge, Si, Bi, Sn, Pb, and Li. When the vibrational entropy of melting, ΔS vib , is zero, ΔS fus ≃ 1.2 kB per atom. This result provides a baseline for ΔSconfig and nearly coincides with “Richard’s Rule” of melting. The ΔSfus deviates from this value for most elements, however, and we show that this deviation originates with extra ΔS vib and extra ΔS config . These two components are correlated for positive and negative deviations from Richard’s rule – the extra ΔS config is consistently ~ 80% of ΔS vib . Our results, interpreted with potential energy landscape theory, imply a correlation between the change in the number of basins and the change in the inverse of their curvature for the melting of pure elements.
