Electronic shutter gates image orthicon on and off

TV camera system contains an electronic shutter that gates the image orthicon photocathode on during expose time and off at all other times. The system records image of diffuse light-scattering regions in the solar system.

Image-orthicon spectra of Geminids in 1969

The spectra of 25 meteors, recorded with an image orthicon technique in December 1969, are studied in relation to similar records made in August of the same year. Of 19 Geminid meteors in the absolute visual magnitude range 0 to +2, only one showed any evidence of the forbidden line of oxygen at 5577 A, while all Perseid meteors recorded in August exhibited the oxygen line, a result of the large difference in geocentric velocity between the two showers. Atoms identified in faint Geminid meteors include neutral iron, magnesium, calcium and sodium. The molecular bands of nitrogen are also observed.

Combined observations of meteors by image-orthicon television camera and multi-station radar

Observations from multiple sites of a radar network and by television of 29 individual meteors from February 1969 through June 1970 are reported. Only 12 of the meteors did not appear to fragment over all the observed portion of their trajectories. From these 12, the relation for the radar magnitude to the panchromatic absolute magnitude was found in terms of velocity of the meteor. A very tentative fit to the data on the duration of long enduring echoes versus visual absolute magnitude is made. The exponential decay characteristics of the later parts of several of the light curves are pointed out as possible evidence of mutual coalescence of droplets into which the meteoroid has completely broken.

Large format SEC orthicon integrating television sensor for LST

The Large Space Telescope will employ a 70 mm format SEC type television camera tube as the data sensor for one or more scientific instruments. The characteristics of this tube are described. The current performance is characterized by an MTF of 50% at 20 line pairs per mm and a signal-to-noise ratio that is about one-half the theoretical based on the square root of the number of photoelectrons. The paper presents some astronomical results and the status of the environmental testing of the tube. Other topics such as radiation sensitivity and thermal design are also discussed.
