Summer 2021 Co-op Report: X-Ray Scintillation Detector (A Co-op Work Experience Report)

The M-3 team was in need of a detector that could be used properly characterize their X-Ray machines. It can also be used to diagnose the X-ray in the case that problems arise before or during an experiment. They put me in charge of designing, ordering, and constructing said detector. After doing research, I found that scintillation-based detectors would be the best diagnostic tool for this purpose. It will allow the team to collect a full photon count of the X-ray pulse as well as provide spectroscopy functions with which we can view photon counts at different energy levels. This will also allow them to calculate an accurate dose given from the machine. Due to lead times, the crystals are still in manufacturing, thus the detector could not be completed. Although the designs and calculations needed to construct and operate the scintillator have been completed which is what I will be presenting in this document. Compared to the detectors being used before, my design offers a cheaper and far more efficient alternative.

An investigation of potential applications of OP-SAPS: Operational sampled analog processors

The impact of charge-coupled device (CCD) processors on future instrumentation was investigated. The CCD devices studied process sampled analog data and are referred to as OP-SAPS - operational sampled analog processors. Preliminary studies into various architectural configurations for systems composed of OP-SAPS show that they have potential in such diverse applications as pattern recognition and automatic control. It appears probable that OP-SAPS may be used to construct computing structures which can serve as special peripherals to large-scale computer complexes used in real time flight simulation. The research was limited to the following benchmark programs: (1) face recognition, (2) voice command and control, (3) terrain classification, and (4) terrain identification. A small amount of effort was spent on examining a method by which OP-SAPS may be used to decrease the limiting ground sampling distance encountered in remote sensing from satellites.

Development of ceria-supported metal-oxide (MO x /CeO 2 ) catalysts via a one-pot chemical vapor deposition (OP-CVD) technique: Structure and reverse water gas shift reaction study

Current synthesis techniques for metal oxide (MO x )-supported catalysts have certain limitations of undesired target loading, ineffective dispersion of active species over the surface, uncontrolled particle size of active species, and complicated synthesis steps. Here, we developed a one-pot chemical vapor deposition (OP-CVD) methodology; by using which a solid metal precursor forms a vapor in a controlled condition and gets supported over the surrounding matrix. The theoretical stability followed by experimental validation using TGA is crucial for selecting the metal precursors. Three simple steps viz. premixing, dispersion, and rapid fixation by calcination are involved in the catalyst development via the OP-CVD approach. This study solely focused on the synthesis of 3d transition MO x over ceria support. The physicochemical characterizations of the prepared catalysts were performed by XRD, ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, CO pulse chemisorption, XANES, and EXAFS analyses to understand the crystal structure of involved species, target metal loading, dispersion, and particle size and prove the feasibility and viability of OP-CVD. The prepared catalysts were further tested for reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction to link their structural information with activity. The RWGS reaction data showed that the CO activity and CO selectivity were metal - and metal precursor-dependent. Higher CO activity of > 0.1 mol/h g-cat was observed for Cu and Co-based catalysts, with CO selectivity of ~100 %. This study provides an opportunity to produce efficient supported catalysts in a convenient way, providing effective catalytic activity.

Potential spin-offs of the carbon dioxide observational platform system (CO-OPS) for remote sensing opportunities

Alternate remote sensing techniques that could utilize the slight losses of energy from the microwave beam which powers the NASA/MSFC Carbon Dioxide Observational Platform System (CO-OPS) to achieve the objectives of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carbon Dioxide Research Program's regional observational data requirements, ODRs, are addressed heuristically. The opportunity for regional remote sensing of the carbon dioxide and water vapor constituents in the atmosphere are discussed as a potential spin off of the CO-OPS. The CO-OPS is envisioned as a high altitude (approx. 25 km) observational platform system powered by microwave energy for regional observational use by the DOE in their Carbon Dioxide Research Program.

Carbon Dioxide Observational Platform System (CO-OPS), feasibility study

The Carbon Dioxide Observational Platform System (CO-OPS) is a near-space, geostationary, multi-user, unmanned microwave powered monitoring platform system. This systems engineering feasibility study addressed identified existing requirements such as: carbon dioxide observational data requirements, communications requirements, and eye-in-the-sky requirements of other groups like the Defense Department, the Forestry Service, and the Coast Guard. In addition, potential applications in: earth system science, space system sciences, and test and verification (satellite sensors and data management techniques) were considered. The eleven month effort is summarized. Past work and methods of gathering the required observational data were assessed and rough-order-of magnitude cost estimates have shown the CO-OPS system to be most cost effective (less than $30 million within a 10 year lifetime). It was also concluded that there are no technical, schedule, or obstacles that would prevent achieving the objectives of the total 5-year CO-OPS program.

DSN G/T(sub op) and telecommunications system performance

Provided here is an intersystem comparison of present and evolving Deep Space Network (DSN) microwave receiving systems. Comparisons of the receiving systems are based on the widely used G/T sub op figure of merit, which is defined as antenna gain divided by operating system noise temperature. In 10 years, it is expected that the DSN 32 GHz microwave receiving system will improve the G/T sub op performance over the current 8.4 GHz system by 8.3 dB. To compare future telecommunications system end-to-end performance, both the receiving systems' G/T sub op and spacecraft transmit parameters are used. Improving the 32 GHz spacecraft transmitter system is shown to increase the end-to-end telecommunications system performance an additional 3.2 dB, for a net improvement of 11.5 dB. These values are without a planet in the field of view (FOV). A Saturn mission is used for an example calculation to indicate the degradation in performance with a planet in the field of view.

RSE-Ops

If DevOps is the intersection of "Developer" and "Operations," then how does this concept map to high performance computing? The answer is RSE-ops, or the intersection of Research Software Engineering and Operations. Research Software Engineers (RSEs) are the individuals writing code for scientific software, and supporting researchers to use codes on high performance computing systems. RSE-ops, then, generally refers to best practices for development and operations of scientific software, which typically happens in a high performance computing environment. A comparison can be made to Cloud Native Devops, which is a similar term that has emerged around Cloud Native Computing. It refers to the application of DevOps practices to the cloud.

System study of the carbon dioxide observational platform system (CO-OPS): Project overview

The resulting options from a system study for a near-space, geo-stationary, observational monitoring platform system for use in the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Carbon Dioxide Observational Platform System (CO-OPS) on the greenhouse effect are discussed. CO-OPS is being designed to operate continuously for periods of up to 3 months in quasi-fixed position over most global regional targets of interest and could make horizon observations over a land-sea area of circular diameter up to about 600 to 800 statute miles. This affords the scientific and engineering community a low-cost means of operating their payloads for monitoring the regional parameters they deem relevant to their investigations of the carbon dioxide greenhouse effect at one-tenth the cost of most currently utilized comparable remote sensing techniques.

Creature co-op: Achieving robust remote operations with a community of low-cost robots

The concept is advanced of carrying out space based remote missions using a cooperative of low cost robot specialists rather than monolithic, multipurpose systems. A simulation is described wherein a control architecture for such a system of specialists is being investigated. Early results show such co-ops to be robust in the face of unforeseen circumstances. Descriptions of the platforms and sensors modeled and the beacon and retriever creatures that make up the co-op are included.

Kinetic and structural evidence for specific DMSO interference with reversible binding of uncharged bis-oximes to hAChE and their reactivation kinetics of OP-hAChE

The structural basis of inhibitory effect of organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on human acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7; hAChE) was inferred from the effect of DMSO on kinetics of reversible inhibition of uncharged, heterocyclic bis-oximes to hAChE, from DMSO effect on rates of reactivation of inactive organophosphate (OP)-hAChE conjugates by bis-oximes and by X-ray structures of bis-oxime and DMSO binding to hAChE. Here, the reversible inhibition constant of DMSO for hAChE in 0.1 M phosphate buffer pH 7.4 at 22 °C, was K i = (0.32 ± 0.04) % (or 45 ± 5 mM). The K i of the bis-oxime LG-703 for hAChE was 3.2-fold larger in 1 % DMSO, consistent with direct competition between LG-703 and DMSO. The X-ray structure of the LG-703∗hAChE complex (PDB ID: 6U3P) shows DMSO and LG-703 bound to individual hAChE monomers, LG-703 in the chain A and DMSO in the chain B. In the co-crystallization both small molecules were present at a similar excess over their corresponding K i values for hAChE (7.8-fold for DMSO and 6.5-fold for LG-703) and formation of two different complexes (DMSO∗hAChE and LG-703∗hAChE), in the same crystal, appears consistent with inhibition kinetics. Furthermore, rates of reactivation of paraoxon-inhibited hAChE (POX-hAChE) and of VX-hAChE by LG-703 and by a novel heterocyclic bis-oxime LG-1922 were reduced 2 – 3-fold in DMSO, consistent with observation of the active-center-bound DMSO molecules in the newly solved structure of the LG-1922∗POX-hAChE complex presented here and in our POX-hAChE structure (PDB ID: 8DT2) showing obstruction of the reactivator access to the conjugated P atom.

Process characteristics and design methods for a 300 deg quad OP amp

The results of process characterization, circuit design, and reliability studies for the development of a quad OP amplifier intended for use up to 300 C are presented. A dielectrically isolated complementary vertical bipolar process was chosen to fabricate the amplifier in order to eliminate isolation leakage and the possibility of latch up. Characterization of NPN and PNP junctions showed them to be suitable for use up to 300 C. Interconnect reliability was predicted to be greater than four years mean time between failure. Parasitic MOS formation was eliminated by isolation of each device.

Modifications to the NASA Ames Space Station Proximity Operations (PROX OPS) Simulator

As the United States is approaching an operational space station era, flight simulators are required to investigate human design and performance aspects associated with orbital operations. Among these are proximity operations (PROX OPS), those activities occurring within a 1-km sphere of Space Station including rendezvous, docking, rescue, and repair. The Space Station Proximity Operations Simulator at NASA Ames Research Center was modified to provide the capability for investigations into human performance aspects of proximity operations. Accurate flight equations of motion were installed to provide the appropriate visual scene to test subjects performing simulated missions. Also, the flight control system was enhanced by enabling pilot control over thruster acceleration values. Currently, research is under way to examine human performance in a variety of mission scenarios.

Multichannel astrometric photometer-based parallaxes of evolved stars - Chi Cygni, 51 Andromedae, and OP Andromedae

Using data from Allegheny Observatory's Thaw/MAP astrometric system, absolute parallaxes are presented for Chi Cygni, 51 Andromedae, the newly discovered RS CVn variable OP Andromedae, and selected stars in these fields. Using existing angular diameter measures and the new parallaxes, linear diameters for Chi Cygni and 51 And are given. Chi Cygni has a perturbation in declination having a period of 0.75 yr and an amplitude of +/- 5 mas. Owing to the extreme variability of Chi Cygni, no further characterization of the system is possible at this time. Other results of spectral interest include the detection of a perturbation in the motion of BD +47 deg 466. This system was found to have a parallax of 14.4 +/- 1.2 mas.

Comparative pulsation calculations with OP and OPAL opacities

Comparative linear nonadiabatic pulsation calculations are presented using the OPAL and Opacity Project opacities. The two sets of opacities include effects due to intermediate coupling and fine structure as well as new abundances. We used two mass luminosity (M-L) relations, one standard (BIT), and one employing substantial convective core overshoot (COV). The two sets of opacities cannot be differentiated on the basis of the stellar pulsation calculations presented here. The BIT relation can model the beat and bump Cepheids with masses between 4 and 7 solar mass, while if the overshoot relation is used, masses between 2 and 6 solar mass are required. In the RR Lyrae regime, we find the inferred masses of globular cluster RRd stars to be little influenced by the choice of OPAL or OP. Finally, the limited modeling we have done is not able to constrain the Cepheid M-L relation based upon period ratios observed in the beat and bump stars.
