Applied Operations Research: Operator's Assistant

NASA operates high value critical equipment (HVCE) that requires trouble shooting, periodic maintenance and continued monitoring by Operations staff. The complexity HVCE and information required to maintain and trouble shoot HVCE to assure continued mission success as paper is voluminous. Training on new HVCE is commensurate with the need for equipment maintenance. LaRC Research Directorate has undertaken a proactive research to support Operations staff by initiation of the development and prototyping an electronic computer based portable maintenance aid (Operator's Assistant). This research established a goal with multiple objectives and a working prototype was developed. The research identified affordable solutions; constraints; demonstrated use of commercial off the shelf software; use of the US Coast Guard maintenance solution; NASA Procedure Representation Language; and the identification of computer system strategies; where these demonstrations and capabilities support the Operator, and maintenance. The results revealed validation against measures of effectiveness and overall proved a substantial training and capability sustainment tool. The research indicated that the OA could be deployed operationally at the LaRC Compressor Station with an expectation of satisfactorily results and to obtain additional lessons learned prior to deployment at other LaRC Research Directorate Facilities. The research revealed projected cost and time savings.

Safety management of complex research operations

Complex research and technology operations present many varied potential hazards which must be addressed in a disciplined independent safety review and approval process. The research and technology effort at the Lewis Research Center is divided into programmatic areas of aeronautics, space and energy. Potential hazards vary from high energy fuels to hydrocarbon fuels, high pressure systems to high voltage systems, toxic chemicals to radioactive materials and high speed rotating machinery to high powered lasers. A Safety Permit System presently covers about 600 potentially hazardous operations. The Safety Management Program described in this paper is believed to be a major factor in maintaining an excellent safety record at the Lewis Research Center.

Foundational Human-Autonomy Teaming Research and Development in Scalable Remotely Operated Advanced Air Mobility Operations: Research Model and Initial Work

To achieve the scalability envisioned for many Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) applications, uncrewed aerial system (UAS) concepts are being pursued with the goal of enabling fewer human operators to manage more increasingly autonomous vehicles. NASA’s Transformational Tools and Technologies – Revolutionary Aviation Mobility (T3-RAM) subproject has identified human-autonomy teaming (HAT) as a critical area of research required to support these operations. Under T3-RAM, the HAT Foundational Research Activity has been tasked with providing basic research to identify HAT and human-automation interaction (HAI) principles that can be used to achieve scalable multi-vehicle UAS operations. This paper first outlines a research model to produce ecologically relevant basic research, then contextualizes completed and planned research and development activities within this model. Proposed research threads are presented, along with their practical and theoretical implications.

Patterns in the development of operations research and management science in government

The development of an operations research or management science (OR/MS) activity in an organization is discussed as occurring in a series of phases. Organizational aspects of the development of OR/MS in an individual case and in an institutional environment of federal civilian agencies are described. It is noted that there is some evidence that the length of time it takes an OR/MS group to develop to maturity has decreased. It is concluded that to understand the development of OR/MS in government organization, it must be considered as a problem in empirical organization theory.

or-topas: Operations Research Toolkit for Pyomo Alternative Solutions

SAND2026-16702O OR-TOPAS: Operations Research Toolkit for Pyomo Alternative Solutions is a tool that enhances optimization applications defined by the Pyomo modeling library. It offers functions to generate optimal or near-optimal solutions, operating independently of Pyomo’s solver interface. Users can configure these functions with specific solver names and options, resulting in a custom solution object that returns a list of solutions. The OR-TOPAS library includes methods tailored to the properties of the model, such as binary integer programs versus linear programs, and specific solver interfaces like Gurobi. It does not provide models for specific applications, but it is applicable to a wide range of Pyomo optimization models. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Reflections on the relationship between artificial intelligence and operations research

Historically, part of Artificial Intelligence's (AI's) roots lie in Operations Research (OR). How AI has extended the problem solving paradigm developed in OR is explored. In particular, by examining how scheduling problems are solved using OR and AI, it is demonstrated that AI extends OR's model of problem solving through the opportunistic use of knowledge, problem reformulation and learning.

Application of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning to Operations Research

This report examines the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) on operations research, private industry, and government sectors, highlighting their applications in automating processes, enhancing decision-making, and optimizing complex systems. AI/ML technologies have revolutionized industries through predictive maintenance, supply chain optimization, and autonomous systems, while also advancing public safety and defense operations. However, challenges such as data integrity, model transparency, and the need for human oversight persist, particularly in high-consequence environments. The report emphasizes the critical role of explainable AI (XAI) and human-computer interaction models like Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) and Human-on-the-Loop (HOTL) in fostering trust and accountability. Balancing automation with ethical responsibility and transparency is essential for the continued successful integration of AI/ML into operational and strategic decision-making frameworks.

Research Operations and Integration Flight Session – Always Sweat the Small Stuff

Human research routinely involves elaborate operations with substantial hardware setup, such as functional MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds, exercise sessions, and cardiac evaluations. These conspicuous operations garner most of our attention and, understandably, resources, but the unsung heroes of spaceflight human research often get by with little fanfare. The collection of human samples and surveys is often just as much of a challenge in terms of both planning and logistics. The samples and surveys are often collected or completed by the crew autonomously, with little to no oversight from science support staff, which puts them the most at risk for data loss. The Research Operations and Integration team will host an interactive session with audience participation to demonstrate the importance of the written communications and instructions that are provided to the astronauts. During this hands-on session, ROI will walk through the challenges faced to ensure astronaut subjects can successfully collect all the various samples (e.g., saliva, fecal, urine, and blood) that the human research community needs. The format will be part lecture and part game show intended to provide both an enlightening and fun session. As we often instruct the crew: “Don’t forget to arrive fasted and bring a list of all the medications you’ve taken in the past week.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI), Operations Research (OR), and Decision Support Systems (DSS): A conceptual framework

In recent years there has been increasing interest in applying the computer based problem solving techniques of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Operations Research (OR), and Decision Support Systems (DSS) to analyze extremely complex problems. A conceptual framework is developed for successfully integrating these three techniques. First, the fields of AI, OR, and DSS are defined and the relationships among the three fields are explored. Next, a comprehensive adaptive design methodology for AI and OR modeling within the context of a DSS is described. These observations are made: (1) the solution of extremely complex knowledge problems with ill-defined, changing requirements can benefit greatly from the use of the adaptive design process, (2) the field of DSS provides the focus on the decision making process essential for tailoring solutions to these complex problems, (3) the characteristics of AI, OR, and DSS tools appears to be converging rapidly, and (4) there is a growing need for an interdisciplinary AI/OR/DSS education.
