Polarized TMD fragmentation functions for 𝐽/𝜓 production

We calculate the matching, at leading order, of the transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) for light quarks and gluons fragmenting to a 𝐽/𝜓 onto polarized nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) TMDFFs. The NRQCD TMDFFs have an operator product expansion in terms of nonperturbative NRQCD production matrix elements. Using the results we obtain, we make predictions for the light quark fragmentation contribution to the production of polarized 𝐽/𝜓 in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) both for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized beams. These results are an important contribution to polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in SIDIS and thus are needed for comparison with experiments at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Field-theoretic analysis of hadronization using soft drop jet mass

One of the greatest challenges in quantum chromodynamics is understanding the hadronization mechanism, which is also crucial for carrying out precision physics with jet substructure. In this paper, we bring together recent advancements in our understanding of nonperturbative structure of the soft drop jet mass based on field theory, with precise perturbative calculations at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy of its multidifferential variants. This allows for a model-independent analysis of power corrections associated with hadronization in a systematic manner. We test and calibrate hadronization models and their interplay with parton showers by comparing our universality predictions with various event generators for quark and gluon initiated jets in both lepton-lepton and hadron-hadron collisions. Our findings reveal that hadronization models perform better for quark jets relative to gluon jets. Our results provide a valuable toolbox for precision studies with the soft drop jet mass and pave the way for future analyses using real-world collider data. The stringent constraints derived in our framework are useful for improving the modeling of hadronization and its interplay with parton showers in next-generation event generators.

Near-SUSY to non-SUSY crossover

Gauge theories can be solved exactly slightly away from the supersymmetric (SUSY) limit softly broken by anomaly mediation when the size of SUSY breaking is much smaller than the dynamical scale (𝑚 ≪ Λ). We show empirical evidence that the near-SUSY limit is continuously connected to the non-SUSY limit (𝑚 ≫ Λ) in SU⁡(𝑁 𝑐 ) gauge theories with 𝑁 𝑓 quarks in the fundamental representation. The evidence includes the behavior of quark bilinear condensate and gluon condensates, light hadron spectra, and consistency with the large 𝑁 𝑐 limit including the Witten-Veneziano relations between the topological susceptibility and 𝑚 𝜂′ and 𝑚 𝜋 . In addition, we present new predictions when 𝑁 𝑓 /𝑁 𝑐 ≳ 𝑂⁡(1).

Cosmology as a weak gravitational field and the trans-Planckian problem

At momenta much higher than the Hubble scale, the cosmological expansion can be thought of as a weak gravitational field. We consider QFT in a particularly convenient set of coordinates that makes this manifest, so that, for those high momenta, the effects of the cosmological expansion can be dealt with using the standard tools of perturbation theory in Minkowski space. In this way, we re-derive standard results of QFT in a cosmological background, such as mode-stretching and gravitational particle production. We discuss the implications of our results for the trans-Planckian problem.

Superadditivity at large charge

The weak gravity conjecture has been invoked to conjecture that the dimensions of charged operators in a CFT should obey a superadditivity relation (sometimes referred to as convexity). In this paper, we study superadditivity of the operator spectrum in theories expanded about the semi-classical saddle point that dominates correlators of large charge operators. We explore this in two contexts. The first is a model with two scalar fields that carry different charges, at a non-trivial Wilson-Fisher fixed point. A careful analysis of the semi-classics for this two field model demonstrates that ‘quantum’ violations of superadditivity (those not forbidden by the conjecture) persist in the large charge regime. We then turn to study the general properties of CFTs at large charge as bottom-up EFTs. By a trial and error procedure we come up with a seemingly consistent family of examples violating the conjecture. In so doing the presence of a genuine dilaton field appears necessary. On the one hand our result demonstrates that the superadditivity conjecture cannot be proven purely on the basis of a bottom-up analysis. On the other hand, the need for a dilaton, with the corresponding infinite fine tuning, indicates the conjecture-violating EFTs are unlikely to be UV completable.

Anomalous interactions between mesons with nonzero spin and glueballs

Topologically nontrivial fluctuations control the anomalous interactions for the η and η ′ pseudoscalar mesons. We consider the anomalous interactions for mesons with higher spin, the heterochiral nonets with J P C = 1 + − and 2 − + . Under the approximation of a dilute gas of instantons, the mixing angle between nonstrange and strange mesons decreases strongly as J increases, and oscillates in sign. Anomalous interactions also open up new, rare decay channels. For glueballs, anomalous interactions indicate that the X ( 2600 ) state is primarily gluonic. Effective Field Theory islands from perturbative and nonperturbative four-graviton amplitudes

Theoretical data obtained from physically sensible field and string theory models suggest that gravitational Effective Field Theories (EFTs) live on islands that are tiny compared to current general bounds determined from unitarity, causality, crossing symmetry, and a good high-energy behavior. In this work, we present explicit perturbative and nonperturbative 2 → 2 graviton scattering amplitudes and their associated low-energy expansion in spacetime dimensions D ≥ 4 to support this notion. Our new results include a first example of gravity weakly coupled to a nonperturbative effective action. We show that, at energies below the mass of its nonperturbative matter, the D = 4, $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric field theory in the confined phase lies on the same islands identified using four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled matter circulating a loop. Furthermore, we generalize the previous four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled massive spin-0 and spin-1 states circulating in the loop to D dimensions. Remarkably, we again find that the low-energy EFT coefficients lie on small islands. These results offer a useful guide towards constraining possible extensions of Einstein gravity.
