Reevaluation of the 22 Ne(α,γ) 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction rates

The competing 22 Ne(α, γ) 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reactions control the production of neutrons for the weak s process in massive and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In both systems, the ratio between the corresponding reaction rates strongly impacts the total neutron budget and strongly influences the final nucleosynthesis. A number of experimental studies have been performed over recent years which necessitate the reevaluation of the 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α, γ) 25 Mg reactions control the production 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α, n) 25 Mg reaction rates. Evaluations of the reaction rates following the collection of new nuclear data presently show differences of up to a factor of 500, resulting in considerable uncertainty in the resulting nucleosynthesis. To reevaluate the 22 Ne(α, γ) 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction rates using updated nuclear data from a number of sources including updating spin and parity assignments. With updated spin and parity assignments, the levels which can contribute to the reaction rates are identified. The reaction rates are computed using a Monte Carlo method which has been used for previous evaluations of the reaction rates in order to focus solely on the changes due to modified nuclear data. The evaluated 22 Ne(α, γ) 26 Mg reaction rate remains substantially similar to that of Longland et al. but, including recent results from Texas A&M, the 22 Ne(α, n) 25 Mg reaction rate is lower at a range of astrophysically important temperatures. Stellar models computed with newton and mesa predict decreased production of the weak branch s process due to the decreased efficiency of 22 Ne as a neutron source. Using the new reaction rates in the mesa model results in 96 Zr / 94 Zr and 135 Ba / 136 Ba ratios in much better agreement with the measured ratios from presolar SiC grains. The 22 Ne + α reaction rates 22 Ne(α, γ) 26 Mg and 22 Ne(α, n) 25 Mg have been recalculated based on more recent nuclear data. The 22 Ne(α, γ) 26 Mg reaction rate remains substantially unchanged since the previous evaluation but the 22 Ne(α, γ) 25 Mg reaction rate is substantially decreased due to updated nuclear data. This results in significant changes to the nucleosynthesis in the weak branch of the s process.

Observation of Long-Range Collective Flow in O + O and Ne + Ne Collisions and Implications for Nuclear Structure Studies

The long-range collective flow of particles produced in oxygen-oxygen ( O + O ) and neon-neon ( Ne + Ne ) collisions is measured with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data samples were collected at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV, with integrated luminosities of 7 nb - 1 and 0.8 nb - 1 for O + O and Ne + Ne collisions, respectively. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations are measured over nearly five units of pseudorapidity. Significant elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow harmonics are observed in both systems. The ratios of v n coefficients between Ne + Ne and O + O collisions suggest sensitivity to the intrinsic nuclear structure of the respective Ne and O ions. Hydrodynamic models with ab initio nuclear structure inputs qualitatively reproduce the collision-overlap dependence of both the v n values and the Ne + Ne to O + O ratios. These measurements provide new constraints when modeling the interplay of nuclear structure and collective dynamics in collisions of O 16 and Ne 20 ions, respectively.

Production of Ne Auger electrons by Ne/+/ bombardment of Mg and Al surfaces

A description is given of experiments which provide evidence for the production of an inner shell vacancy in the Ne by the asymmetric Ne-Mg and Ne-Al collision. In addition, autoionization states of neutral Ne have been observed. These states are to be distinguished from the more usual case in Auger electron spectroscopy of de-excitation of an ion with a core vacancy. The experiments involved the bombardment of Mg and Al surfaces with Ne(+) ions. A LEED-Auger system equipped with an ion gun and a four-grid retarding potential analyzer operated in the usual dN(E)/dE mode was used.

Far-Ultraviolet Emission Cross Sections of Ne 2 and Ne 3 Excited by Electron Impact

We have measured the electron-impact-induced fluorescence spectrum of neon in the wavelength range 120-270 nm at a spectral resolution of 0.43 nm (FWHM). The strongest lines observed in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of neon are assigned to terms of the doublet system of Ne 2 (2s(sup 2) 2p(sup 4)nl and the triplet system of Ne 3 (2s(sup 2)2p(sup 3)3l). Our FUV spectral data, obtained at 300 eV electron-impact energy, provide absolute emission cross sections of these Ne 2 and Ne 3 lines, and are compared to previous measurements where available. In addition, the excitation function of the strongest Ne II line observed at 191.6 nm was measured from threshold to 1000 eV electron-impact energy.

Far Ultraviolet Emission Cross Sections of Ne II and Ne III Excited by Electron Impact

In the electron-impact-induced fluorescence spectrum on neon in the wavelength range of 120 270 nm at a spectral resolution of 0.43 nm, the strongest lines in the far ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum of neon are assigned to items of the Doublet system of Ne II and the Triplet system of Ne III. FUV spectral data at 300 eV electron impact energy provide absolute emission cross sections of these Ne II and Ne III lines and are compared to previous measurements.

Intruder configurations in 29 Ne at the transition into the island of inversion: Detailed structure study of 28 Ne

Detailed γ-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope 28 Ne has been performed for the first time using the one-neutron removal reaction from 29 Ne on a liquid hydrogen target at 240 MeV/nucleon. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for 28 Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N=20 and N=28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.36$ TeV $^{16}$O$+^{16}$O and $^{20}$Ne$+^{20}$Ne collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the first measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients $v_{n}$, which quantify the $n^{\mathrm{th}}$-order Fourier modulation of charged-particle azimuthal distributions, for $n=2$-4 in $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.36$ TeV $\mathrm{^{16}O}+\mathrm{^{16}O}$ and $\mathrm{^{20}Ne}+\mathrm{^{20}Ne}$ collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2025. The $v_{n}$ coefficients are measured as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$), collision centrality, and event multiplicity. They are extracted using two complementary methods: two-particle correlations with a template-fit subtraction of short-range non-flow contributions, and four-particle subevent cumulants, which intrinsically suppress non-flow effects and provide sensitivity to flow fluctuations. The results show a clear hierarchy $v_{2} > v_{3} > v_{4}$ and a non-monotonic dependence on $p_{\mathrm{T}}$, reaching a maximum around 2 GeV, consistent with trends observed in heavy-ion collisions. Detailed comparisons between the two collision systems reveal an enhanced $v_{2}$ in central $\mathrm{^{20}Ne}+\mathrm{^{20}Ne}$ collisions, consistent with theory expectations based on the predicted prolate deformation of neon nuclei, in contrast to the slightly tetrahedral structure predicted for oxygen. The four-particle cumulant results highlight strong event-by-event fluctuations and provide the greatest sensitivity to nuclear shape effects. These measurements can place new constraints on the initial geometry and the hydrodynamic response in light-ion collisions, offering valuable input for models of nuclear structure.

Inverse kinematics study of the energy levels of 21 Ne populated with the 20 Ne +𝑑 reaction

In recent years there has been significant experimental effort aimed at studying the impact of 16 O neutron poisoning on the weak 𝑠 process in rotating massive stars. Improving the understanding of energy levels in 21 Ne is crucial to reducing uncertainties in the rates of the 𝛼-induced reactions on 17 O that determine the overall efficiency of the weak 𝑠 process. This paper reports on one such experiment: a study of the 20 Ne (𝑑,𝑝)⁢ 21 Ne reaction in inverse kinematics. Deduced spin-parity assignments were made based on adiabatic distorted-wave approximation analysis and neutron partial widths were estimated by comparison with a previous experiment. Of particular significance for nuclear astrophysics is the resulting neutron partial width for the 7820-keV energy level, estimated to be 12 200 ⁢(2900)⁢ eV, and an upper limit of ≤ 9300 eV for that of the 7749-keV energy level. These results are in tension with previous studies and therefore this paper also discusses the current state of the research into the astrophysically relevant energy levels and highlights both areas of agreement and areas of disagreement between this and various other studies that have investigated this nucleus.

Systematic Bayesian evaluation of resonance parameters in 19 Ne for the 15 O ⁡(𝛼, 𝛾)⁢ 19 Ne and 18 F ⁡(𝑝, 𝛼)⁢ 15 O reactions

Here, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the nuclear structure properties of 19 Ne using a novel and rigorous Bayesian statistical framework. Precise characterization of 19 Ne resonance parameters is critical for accurately determining reaction rates of the astrophysically significant 15 O ⁡(𝛼, 𝛾)⁢ 19 Ne and 18 F ⁡(𝑝, 𝛼)⁢ 15 O reactions, which govern breakout from the hot CNO cycle in x-ray bursts and influence 𝛾-ray emission in novae, respectively. By reconstructing likelihood functions from published experimental data—including asymmetric uncertainties and upper or lower limits—we derive posterior distributions for resonance energies, decay widths, and branching ratios. Our Bayesian approach systematically incorporates previously reported discrepancies among measurements, providing a statistically robust and consistent treatment of these uncertainties. The evaluated resonance parameters and associated uncertainties provide crucial input for stellar nucleosynthesis modeling, contributing to a refined understanding of explosive astrophysical phenomena.

A Relation between the Mid-Infrared [Ne v] 14.3 Micrometers and [Ne III] 15.6 Micrometer Lines in Active Galactic Nuclei

We present a strong correlation between the [Ne v] 14.3 mm and [Ne III] 15.6 mm emission lines arising from the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), spanning 4 orders of magnitude in luminosity. The data are compiled primarily from Spitzer Space Telescope observations of nearby Seyfert galaxies (median z p 0.01) and 3C radio sources (median z p 0.52). This correlation is consistent with earlier studies in the optical/UV bands showing that line ratios arising in the NLRs are remarkably constant across AGNs. We also show that the correlation allows only a very narrow range in ionization parameter for simple photoionization models. The observed correlation will place tight constraints on alternative models, which predict constant line ratios over a broader range in ionization parameter.

Lateral distribution of high energy muons in EAS of sizes Ne approximately equals 10(5) and Ne approximately equals 10(6)

Muon energy spectra and muon lateral distribution in EAS were investigated with the underground magnetic spectrometer working as a part of the extensive air showers (EAS) array. For every registered muon the data on EAS are analyzed and the following EAS parameters are obtained, size N sub e, distance r from the shower axis to muon, age parameter s. The number of muons with energy over some threshold E associated to EAS of fixed parameters are measured, I sub reg. To obtain traditional characteristics, muon flux densities as a function of the distance r and muon energy E, muon lateral distribution and energy spectra are discussed for hadron-nucleus interaction model and composition of primary cosmic rays.

Exclusive measurements of light fragment production at forward angles in Ne-Pb and Ne-NaF collisions at E/A=400 MeV and 800 MeV

Emission of light fragments at small angles is studied in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the Diogene plastic wall for both symmetrical and non-symmetrical target-projectile systems with 400 MeV per nucleon and 800 MeV per nucleon incident neon nuclei. Efficiency of multiplicity measurements in the small angle range for the selection of central or peripheral collisions is confirmed for asymmetric systems. Differential production cross sections of Z = 1 fragments show evidence for the existence of two emitting sources. The apparent temperature of each source is obtained from comparison with a thermodynamical model.
