Materials Data on NaGaSiO4 by Materials Project

NaGaSiO4 crystallizes in the hexagonal P6_3 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are three inequivalent Na1+ sites. In the first Na1+ site, Na1+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NaO6 octahedra that share corners with six equivalent GaO4 tetrahedra and corners with six equivalent SiO4 tetrahedra. There are three shorter (2.50 Å) and three longer (2.63 Å) Na–O bond lengths. In the second Na1+ site, Na1+ is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three equivalent O2- atoms. All Na–O bond lengths are 2.46 Å. In the third Na1+ site, Na1+ is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six O2- atoms. There are three shorter (2.33 Å) and three longer (2.57 Å) Na–O bond lengths. Ga3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form GaO4 tetrahedra that share corners with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra and corners with four equivalent SiO4 tetrahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 58–78°. There is three shorter (1.85 Å) and one longer (1.86 Å) Ga–O bond length. Si4+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share corners with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra and corners with four equivalent GaO4 tetrahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 58–64°. There is one shorter (1.64 Å) and three longer (1.65 Å) Si–O bond length. There are four inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a trigonal planar geometry to one Na1+, one Ga3+, and one Si4+ atom. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Na1+, one Ga3+, and one Si4+ atom. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two Na1+, one Ga3+, and one Si4+ atom. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Na1+, one Ga3+, and one Si4+ atom.

Coordination of Fe, Ga and Ge in high pressure glasses by Moessbauer, Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and geological implications

For some time, it has been recognized that the structure of silicate liquids has a great bearing on such magma properties as viscosity, diffusivity, and thermal expansion and on the extrapolation of thermodynamic quantities outside of the experimentally measurable range. In this connection it is vital to know if pressure imposes changes in melt structure similar to the pressure-induced reconstructive transformations in crystals. In the present study on 1 bar and high pressure glasses, an investigation is conducted regarding the coordination of Fe(3+) in Fe silicate glasses by Moessbauer spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy is employed to explore the coordinations of Ge(4+) in GeO2 glasses and of Ga(3+) in NaGa silicate glasses, while the coordination of Ga(3+) in NaGaSiO4 glasses is studied with the aid of methods of X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
